Transformers News: SDCC 2020 has officially been canceled due to COVID-19

The dramatic and unprecedented impact of the Coronavirus pandemic continues with its latest casualty. Earlier today, the organizers behind San Diego Comic-Con announced that this summer's SDCC 2020 event is canceled, which would be the first time ever in its 50 year history. The decision was made after recent statements by California's Governor as well as their monitoring of health advisories. As one can imagine, social distancing is very challenging at an event so large with hundreds of thousands of attendees from around the world.

Transformers News: SDCC 2020 has officially been canceled due to COVID-19

This marks the 2nd event that has been canceled for Transformers fans, the first being the unofficial fan-convention TFcon USA, which was canceled last month near the beginning of the pandemic here in the United States.

Over the past couple of decades, SDCC had become a tent pole event of the year for many pop-culture icons like the Transformers brand. With new product reveals, celebrity interviews and appearances, exclusive toys and comics, and so on, fans have clamored around this event year after year.

One could make the argument that the importance of SDCC for some pop-culture toy brands has become bigger than the annual New York Toy Fair, which happens annually in February.

While no Transformers exclusives had been announced for SDCC 2020, it is presumed that there were to be exclusives and it is assumed that those exclusives will most likely find another home online in order to get those products to consumers. We will keep you updated as further information becomes available.

Here is the direct message from the organizers of San Diego Comic-Con:

Comic-Con Announces Plans in Light of the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Current Situation Requires Exceptional Measures

For the first time in its 50-year history San Diego Comic Convention (SDCC), the organizers behind the annual pop culture celebration, announced today with deep regret that there will be no Comic-Con in 2020. The event will instead return to the San Diego Convention Center from July 22-25, 2021.

Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for its conventions each year, and how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, they had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer. Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.

Similarly, WonderCon Anaheim, which was to have been held April 10-12, 2020 will return to the Anaheim Convention Center from March 26-28, 2021.

In addition to their conventions, Comic-Con has been planning a major renovation of Balboa Park’s Federal Building to be completed for the grand opening of the Comic-Con Museum in the summer of 2021. However, the COVID-19 situation has had an effect on those efforts as well. As such, they will be rephasing the Museum’s initially planned major renovations, but will not scale back the experience to be offered to visitors upon the Museum’s grand opening. They anticipate releasing building plans illustrating the Museum’s transformation and sharing more information about those efforts in the coming months.

SDCC also announced that individuals who purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 will have the option to request a refund or transfer their badges to Comic-Con 2021. All 2020 badge holders will receive an email within the next week with instructions on how to request a refund. Exhibitors for Comic-Con 2020 will also have the option to request a refund or transfer their payments to Comic-Con 2021 and will also receive an email within the next week with instructions on how to process their request.

In the next few days onPeak, Comic-Con’s official hotel affiliate, will be canceling all hotel reservations and refunding all deposits made through them. There is no need for anyone who booked through onPeak to take any action, including trying to cancel their reservations online or contacting the company via phone as the process will be handled automatically. Those who booked rooms through onPeak will be notified when refunds have been completed.

"Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take this action, we know it is the right decision," said David Glanzer, spokesperson for the organization. "We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy."

While this is a bummer, it was expected and is something that should have been canceled in lieu of the pandemic and the extreme importance of social distancing in order to defeat this virus. Until we can all get together again, stay safe and healthy my friends and fellow Seibertronians.

Greetings Seibertronians! Thanks to fellow Seibertron users, ScottyP and Sabrblade, we've gotten wind of a release from Viz Media that many thought we'd never see...A release of the Japanese Transformers Manga!

The news was shared by Viz on their Twitter Feed, the message read as follows:

Viz Media wrote:Announcement: Transformers: The Manga Volume 1, rolls out this Winter. This collection of Generation 1 Transformers manga strips ran in Japan’s TV Magazine in the 1980’s and will be published in the United States for the first time!

Transformers News: Viz Media Set To Release Transformers: The Manga

Also, Sabrblade goes a little more in-depth about this release and explains it, as well as saying where, the image they give, came from.

Sabrblade wrote:It seems that Jim Sorenson's next book, Transformers: A Visual History, isn't the only new piece of Transformers print material coming from Viz Media. Viz has just Tweeted the announcement of Transformers: The Manga, Volume 1, a collection of the original Japanese manga from 1985, originally published by TV magazine, to be released in the United States later this Winter.

Note that the accompanying artwork included with the Tweet is actually a preexisting work. Originally, this artwork was the cover of a huge compendium released by Million Publishing back in 2002, which had compiled all of the 1985-1991 Transformers manga. Later, Million (under their new name Hero-X) rereleased this collection broken apart into seven individual volumes, split across each individual Japanese G1 series. The particular version of the art seen here in the Tweet is of Volume 1 of that split-apart series, which contained only the Fight! Super Robot Lifeform Transformers manga and story pages.

It is presumed that Viz's releases will be an official English-translated release of Hero-X's seven volumes, but it is currently unknown what kind of English translation this will be (as in, how faithful it may be to the original Japanese version). After all, this is no ordinary Japanese manga series we're dealing with here. Rather, it is a Japanese manga of Japanese-original stories (and characters, in later installments) published as part of the Japanese release of an American property featuring (at first) American-original characters.

So, it remains to be seen if this will use such terminology as "Optimus Prime", "Autobot", "Decepticon", etc. or "Convoy", "Cybertron", "Destron", etc. Or if such Western Transformers phrases like "By the Allspark!", "Scrap!", "Stick it in neutral!" "Sweet Solus Prime!" etc. will be used over less specific phrases like "Oh no!", "Curses!", "Stop right there!", "Oh my goodness!" etc.

The Transformers Legends LG-EX Big-Powered Box set has finally been released, and as usual for a Transformers Legends release the figure comes packed with a short manga issue. This time, however, the Legends Manga released two additional full manga chapters to accompany the release! Thankfully for us, fellow Seibertronian Sabrblade has been so kind as to provide an interpretation of these chapters. In addition, our friend was able to discern which figures are featured in the issue, both released-and-unreleased, ranging from the title Big-Powered figures to MP-44 Optimus Prime to even Movie-Style Protoforms. Be sure to take a read below and stay tuned to Seibertron.com for more Transformers news and reviews.

Oh, sweet mother of mercy, there have been some major manga updates published for the new Big Powered set.

First, we got not one but TWO online chapters that lead into the toy pack-in issues:

In the year 2038, the three components of Violen Jiger, possessing the original bodies of the Powered Masters, work to turn a distant planet into "Unicron Neo", which is based directly on the Beast Wars Neo Unicron toy prototype. This is during the post-G2 era of 2038, during Galvatron II's reign as leader of the Decepticons.

We then cut to a flashback to 2030, during the events of the Train Wars when The Fallen was attacking Cybertron in his design that was based on that of Generations FOC Ruination. G2 Smokescreen is a witness of these events and is in the body that he would have had if his toy had won in the poll that led to Goshooter's new toy getting made instead. Anyway, G2 Smokescreen has some mental problems from the Binaltech GT System (which enabled one Transformer to operate from multiple bodies simultaneously). G2 Smokescreen keeps hearing the voices of GT Units 01, 02, and 08 in his head, which I guess would make him 07 since one of the voices calls him that (these were all numbers that the four variant releases of Binaltech Smokescreen had). This would mean that G2 Smokescreen is actually G1 Smokescreen after having suffered from multiple personalities and turned bad as a result. He then gets attacked by "Double Goshooter" and is knocked away. He wakes up later having been rebuilt into his proper G2 jet body and meets Dreadwing, who gets him up to speed on things.

Back in the present, Unicron Neo appears above Planet Chaar where he attacks the Decepticons. Galvatron II engages Unicron Neo and recalls what he had learned on Planet Beast about the potential of Beast Power (which was shown in the previous manga that advertised Repugnus and Grotusque). Unable to stop Unicron Neo, Galvatron II uses Solitarium to escape, traveling back in time to the 20th Century, when the first Trypticon (from Scramble City) is currently being built, and where he meets G1 Megatron and will go on to have more adventures there as Megatron's City Commander.

Unicron Neo reformats the damaged Dreadwing and Smokescreen in new forms based on their Tokyo Toy Show 2010 toys (which are redecos of ROTF Mindwipe and Skystalker) to make then into servants. They and rest of the G2 Decepticons on Chaar are recruited to serve Unicron Neo. Meanwhile, aboard Broadside, Optimus Prime (in his MP-10 body) and Megatron discuss the Legends World and the possibility of reestablishing the Cybertron Alliance. But Unicron Neo suddenly appears behind them.

Optimus is shocked by this, especially since Unicron was last seen dead in the Triple Z Point. A character from the Generations books, named Screenshot, is also with Optimus. Unicron Neo heads for Planet Zone, and so do all the other Supreme Commanders. On Zone, Violen Jiger attacks all the Micromasters, demanding Energon Z from them. He unleashes Metrotitan, who has undergone the same "Titan Power Up" that Metroplex underwent back during the Metrowars. Galaxy Shuttle goes on the defense, assuming his Zone Base Mode. Grandus and Sky Garry also appear, along with Metrobase, who has likewise undergone the Titan Power Up. The real Powered Masters arrive and Dai Atlas assumes his Zone Base for the Micromasters to use. The Micromasters swarm over Vion while Phaser and Groundshaker, being "G1 Microns" (Mini-Cons) now, use their Targetmaster modes with Roadfire and Sonic Bomber.

The Micromasters then reveal that they used Schaffer Energy with Plasma Energy to make Plasma Schaffer Energy, which they then use to combine into Micron Target Modes with the cry of "Energy In!" (using their Siege toy weapon modes). The Sky Patrol Team (in their United EX bodies) use these new weapons, but Eagle Eye won't help, saying that he's named "Hawking" now.

Unicron Neo transforms into robot mode starts attacking Planet Zone. Then those two weird monster creatures from the Zone opening appear (I'm guessing they came from Unicron Neo) and attack Dai Atlas. The other Supreme Commanders arrive to help. Fortress turns into Fortress Maximus and Cog (in his Siege toy body) combines with him to form Weaponizer Fortress Maximus. He engages Unicron Neo, but Optimus tells him that the Matrix needs to be used to stop Unicron. Suddenly, Mini-Cons appear in their glowing forms from Armada, with Dragoyell explaining that they were the Mini-Con toy collection of Armada Megatron, having since become real Transformers.

Armada Thrust then appears and explains his new membership with the Aerialbots. The Mini-Cons then all combine into the Unicron of Light (colored like the new Encore toy). The Mini-Con Dead End then links with the bulk to use the "Cosmo Springer" attack, blasting a hole in Unicron Neo, who just smiles...

We open with a flashback to 2021, just after the Unite Warriors comics ended with Optimus dying again and Roller looking after his body. Suddenly, a Vok probe appears and steals Optimus's body.

In the present, 2038, the disabled Unicron Neo reveals his true identity: Dark Nova! He defeats the Unicron of Light and explains his origin, which ties all the way back to the Vok! He is actually the two Vok who were killed with Tarantulas in the Beast Wars episode "Other Victories", and have taken eons to revive. As Dark Nova, he took the form of Unicron because he is a symbol to the Transformers (referencing the Vok having taken Unicron's form back in the Beast Wars episode "Other Voices") and created Violen Jiger to acquire the Zodiac energy for himself and to stop the resurrection of Optimus Prime (since Optimus is a symbol of hope for the Transformers). He ultimately wishes to the destroy the Transformers so that the Beast Wars may never come to the pass.

His mentioning the Beast Wars prompts Optimus Prime to mention Optimus Primal (whom he had met previously back in 2004 during the events of RobotMasters). Dark Nova then transforms into his never-used-until-now "Robo Mode" (which was only seen in a catalog image), and unleashes Vok Novaroids on the planet (which resemble Movie 1 Protoform Optimus Prime's comet mode with Vok faces). Jetmaster retaliates with Novabots while the Supreme Commanders fight on. Dreadwing and Smokescreen combine into their Double Jet Mode while Dai Atlas and Roadfire become Land Powered to fight back.

Suddenly, what looks like Universe Razorclaw appears (seemingly from the two monsters from the Zone opening) and introduces itself as a Vok Galaman. It defeats Hot Rod, God Ginrai, and Victory Saber all at once, but Optimus then takes it on using his Matrix's Reconfiguration powers to assume Go-Bot Mode, his Missile Trailer Mode (in which he uses his "Double Wheel Torque Megaton"), and his Battle Convoy Mode. He tries to use his "Seibertonium Sword", but is impaled by Dark Nova. Having expended much of the Matrix's energy, Optimus is tossed aside.

Reinforcements arrive in the form of Eldedroids, with Daniel leading the charge. We then get some information about when Alpha Trion rebuilt Optimus from Orion Pax and when Optimus Primal died destroying the Vok's planetbuster. Shaoshao Li (in her Targetmaster form based on Siege Firedrive) mourns for the dying Hot Rod, but suddenly a Matrix-like device appears inside his chest and revives him as Rodimus Prime (upgrading him into resemble his POTP Leader toy), much to Shaoshao's delight.

More Matrixes appear inside the chests of Fortress Maximus, Grand Maximus, God Ginrai, Victory Saber, and Dai Atlas, which are revealed to each be an Energon Matrix! All of them raise each Matrix to the sky, shooting up a massive blast that flies off elsewhere.

We then cut back to another earlier flashback to when Roller joined the Battlestars in finding the missing body of Optimus Prime. They tracked the body to Planet Lucifer, where they met resistance Galaman and Novaroid forces. Roller was killed in the battle, but Optimus's body was found and revived with Zodiac, becoming Star Convoy while Roller became Star Convoy's treaded component.

Back in the present, the Matrix energy blast finds the defeat MP-10-bodied Optimus and strikes him, upgrading him once more into his previous Star Convoy form. He regroups with Dai Atlas and borrows his Zone Powered Cutter to bisect the Vok Galaman. Optimus then turns into his upcoming MP-44 body and uses his trailer to load Dai Atlas as a Drill Rocket. Dai Altas is fired at Dark Nova and penetrates the massive alien's malformed body.

But then Broadside arrives with Soundwave and Weirdwolf, who informs every about something to do with Megatron. Dark Nova then reveals a horrific sight as his head then takes the form of Megatron, becoming the Star Giant once more!

And finally, RobotKingdom has scans of the three pack-in manga issues included with the Big Powered set:

Due to the low quality of these scans making it very hard to make out exactly what's happening in these three, I'm not going to attempt to summarize these events. But, from what little I can make out of these three chapters (aside from the fact that the Powered Masters simply fight Violen Jiger's Powered Master-bodied components and then go after Dark Nova to try to save Megatron), the combined form of Roadfire and Topspin is "Wing Powered", Dai Atlas combined with Twin Twist is "Drill Powered", and the combined form of all five Powered Masters (Dai Atlas, Sonic Bomber, Roadfire, Topspin, and Twin Twist) is "Ultra Powered".

Also, it looks like Dai Atlas, Sonic Bomber, and Roadfire were all originally created by Megatron using Vector Sigma, and were originally "Poweredrons" before they would be called Powered Masters.

And there's something about the Powered Masters' having Powered Engines, and Roadfire has an attack called "Zone Powered Hammer".

I don't know about you, but I love call backs and easter eggs. Especially in comics where an artist can have some fun, giving more than what is just scripted.

Well, eagle eye TF Fan, Patrick Duffy posted an image of a Transformers easter egg found in the pages of DC's Young Justice #1 comic. The artist, Patrick Gleason, drew a car that any Transformer fan would recognize, even if not in its traditional red colours. That is none other than the Hot Rod design an you can see it below. There may be other easer eggs like that in the book, like the Bumblebee looking car nearby, but they are nowhere as obvious as Hot Rod.

Enjoy!

Thanks to fellow Seiebrtronians Primalxconvoy and Sabrblade for bringing these new manga scans to our attention. Below you will find the latest entries in the Legends Comic series which includes the in package comic for Takara's Transformers Legends LG59 Blitzwing and LG58 Clonebot set.

The Blitzwing comic is rather intriguing since it sheds light on who the partner "drone" might be. The black redeco of Shuffler seems to be Big Convoy, so a sentient robot after all. Also, we see Blitzwing drones coloured to homage Blitzwing Diaclone colour scheme, and they seem to be the army for the Quintessons.

Also, in Legends Manga news, we have a summary for the Overlord comic we recently posted, which will be found below the comic scans and the tech specs.

Enjoy!

Summary of the Overlord comic brought to us from TFWiki

TFWiki wrote:Having been informed by Clouder of a "Chōkon Tower" Chinese restaurant that's offering food at half price to Masterforce users, Ginrai and the Autobot Headmaster Juniors check it out and find it owned by Giga and Mega in a building looking like a familiar combination of jet and tank. The two explain that they've come back to life to finish their vendetta against Ginrai and spread fliers advertising their business in order to lure him in, and are again working with Devil Z, recovered from his previous defeat by absorbing the Legends World's energies. After letting Ginrai finish his meal so that they'll be at full strength for the battle, the villainous couple equip their new Masterforce suits and get ready to fight, pleasing Devil Z who reveals he's responsible for reviving them to help him with destroying the world. Ginrai questions why they'd do that, but Giga and Mega don't care who they have to work with as long as they they get to settle things with Ginrai.

As the combatants get to their respective transtectors, Super Ginrai taunts his opponents that he's already seen what the Gigatank and Megajet can do at Bonapar Island, only for them to reveal that they've regained the ability to become Overlord, now as Headmasters. Ginrai remains confident he can win with his mastery of Ten-Chi-Jin Chōkon Power, but Overlord claims to have mastered a power beyond that of Ten-Chi-Jin—the wish-granting Zamojin power of the Legends World, also known as Shinchōkon! Using this energy, Overlord creates another Gigajet and Gigatank out of thin air, allowing Mega to form the head of a second Overlord, and together "Overlord Giga" and "Overlord Mega" overwhelm Super Ginrai and Godbomber with their "Chōkon Double Kick Tornado". Ginrai is forced to call upon Rattrap and use his Getmaster powers to fire a beam of Jūchōkon, though it fails to impress and Overlord Giga counters with a "Chōkon Dis-Relive" missile barrage that Ginrai only deflects by combining into God Ginrai and using Godbomber's recently upgraded armor. However, the Overlords reveal that he's not the only one who can combine and use Shinchōkon to merge together into a form dubbed "Overlord Tera". This prompts Devil Z to show up to gloat, when suddenly Doubleclouder subdues him with energon chains, the double agent having been loyal to Mayor Megatron from the start.

God Ginrai is brought down by Overlord Tera's mighty Chōkon Devil Fire, but when Rattrap urges him to fight on, he starts glowing with a mysterious light. Watching the battle, Metroplex recognizes it as the light of the Zamojin energy that brought him to this world—Ginrai has been imbued with Rattrap's latent Shinchōkon! Using Get On to draw upon both Jūchōkon and Shinchōkon from the rat, he covers his body in flames and uses a "Double Chōkon Fire Guts" tackle to take down Overlord, who admits defeat. Giga and Mega are ready to die again together with Devil Z, but Clouder informs them that Devil Z has been safely captured and will not be killed, so neither will they, and Ginrai happily tells them they're welcome to try to settle things with him some other time. In the end, the couple continues to run their restaurant and Mega is happily reunited with the Decepticon Headmaster Juniors, though Giga has to end the half-off offer when Ginrai starts eating there all the time.

Let us take you back to 2008, when the -ation storylines (including Stormbringer) came to a sudden end, finding a conclusion of sorts in Maximum Dinobots, to make way for the first big IDW Transformers 'event': All Hail Megatron.

Almost ten years later, we find ourselves looking at the opening pages of what is still seen as a divisive piece of work in the IDWverse (mostly for the reasons pointed out above, and others to do with pacing and character writing) - one that has made its way to Japanese audiences not that long ago, as seen here - in a new paperback collected edition, the same as the Complete All Hail Megatron hardback we have seen before. For those of you wishing to read the story but not willing to own the hardback copy, this week's release may be the book for you!

Transformers: The Complete All Hail Megatron TP
Rejoice, Decepticon brethren! The pretender, Optimus, and his treacherous Autobots are defeated, Earth is all but defenseless, and the time for conquest is at hand!

After at last succeeding in defeating the Autobots, the Decepticons set about ruling our planet with an iron fist. Their forces invade and control New York and, before long, they manage to cripple the United States. It's a war between the U.S. armed forces and a giant species of technologically advanced killing machines--a war that suddenly becomes incredibly one-sided! Meanwhile, the battered and broken Autobots struggle to survive a forced exile on their dead homeworld of Cybertron. Defeated by to an unknown traitor in their midst, the Autobots sturggle to maintain their trust and unity... and nothing short of a miracle will save them from utter extinction!

Collects All Hail Megatron #1-16, as well as Transformers Spotlight: Blurr, Transformers Spotlight: Jazz, Transformers Spotlight: Cliffjumper, Transformers Spotlight: Drift, and Transformers Spotlight: Metroplex.
