HASCON is Hasbro’s first ever fan and family convention which will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Dunkin’ Donuts Center and other nearby locations (collectively the “HASCON Sites”) from September 8-10, 2017. (NASDAQ:HAS), a global play and entertainment company, officially opened ticket sales for the first-ever HASCON FANmily™ event, which will take place in Providence at the Rhode Island Convention Center and Dunkin’ Donuts Center from September 8-10, 2017. Today Hasbro also revealed the first round of talent appearances, panels and brand experiences set to take place during HASCON 2017. Appearances and meet & greets will be available with some of the biggest names from Hasbro, including DUDE PERFECT, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura (Producer of all the TRANSFORMERS films, as well as G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. JOE: Retaliation); Stan Lee (Marvel Comics Legend); Peter Cullen and Frank Welker (original TRANSFORMERS voice talent); Andrea Libman and Cathy Weseluck (voice talent of MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC and MY LITTLE PONY: THE MOVIE), “Chewbacca Mom”, Candace Payne and more.

This unique event will bring Hasbro’s most iconic brands to life like never before, including TRANSFORMERS, MY LITTLE PONY, NERF, MAGIC: THE GATHERING, PLAY-DOH, MONOPOLY and G.I. JOE, and exceptional partner brands such as BEYBLADE, DREAMWORKS TROLLS and SESAME STREET. Fans will get a peek behind the Hasbro curtain during the three days filled with exciting first-look previews and panels from Hasbro’s biggest television and movie series.

Attendees will be immersed in hands-on, interactive experiences with oversized games such as PIE FACE and TOILET TROUBLE from HASBRO GAMING, photo opportunities with SESAME STREET and TROLLS costumed characters, epic BEYBLADE battles, a PLAY-DOH creation zone and the MY LITTLE PONY magical world of Equestria. FANmilies will be able to take photos with props from Hasbro’s movies and step into a custom-built NERF battle arena, maybe even with the guys from DUDE PERFECT. HASCON will also host MAGIC: THE GATHERING gameplay featuring an exclusive preview of the upcoming Iconic Masters card set. Youth fans, ages 3-15, have the opportunity to audition for Hasbro commercials and voice talent on our animated series. As many of you have seen from our recent photographs, several members of the TFNation crew recently visited the Hilton to perform preparations for this year’s event. Whilst there we were able to discuss the issues some attendees have raised with bedrooms.

In an attempt to facilitate as many of our attendees as possible, the Hilton has generously provided us with some additional bedrooms for the nights around our convention nights. There will now be accommodation available at the discounted rate on the following nights;

It is very important to note that due to high demand in the area (owing to the Festival of Quilts, and other events) the amount of rooms we will be allocated for these additional nights is likely to be extremely limited. As previously mentioned, only the three convention nights are contracted to us – we are therefore incredibly grateful for the Hilton agreeing to release additional nights at a discounted rate, when they were fully entitled to sell them at full value.

Our allocation will now include a small number of family rooms, which will also be presented at a discounted rate. Please note these are ONLY to be booked by families and not by single attendees. Please be mindful of those whose entire weekend depends on this room type.

With final preparations motoring along, and with all of our guests now announced, we are happy to announce our schedule for this year’s convention. As you can see, we have aimed to fit in as much as possible for our attendees, and hope you get the most out of it.

A few points to note:
1. Neither the trading hall nor The Forge are open for trading on the Friday. Opening times for The Forge, the display rooms and the Transformer Car team will be announced closer to the event.

2. Friday’s “Perchance to Dream” event will be covered, in further detail, next week.

3. Cosplay competition forms will be released shortly, and we will announce when applications are open.

4. We politely request that podcasters refrain from conducting interviews during the convention weekend itself. Those wishing to interview after the convention closes should contact the us to enquire on availability, to ensure guests aren’t double-booked/over-worked.

5. If you are planning your own event during TFN, please let us know, though note access to our rooms is strictly by prior permission only.

TRANSFORMERS
Phone battery running low on Energon? Fans can "Power Up" in the TRANSFORMERS section of the booth with its phone charging stations. Fans can see some of the awesome new characters and figures across the Transformers Generations, Transformers Robots in Disguise and Transformers Rescue Bots lines. Backflip Studios will also have a game-play station for the latest game in the TRANSFORMERS mobile gaming portfolio, TRANSFORMERS: EARTH WARS.

On Thursday, July 21st at 11:00 a.m., join members from Hasbro's TRANSFORMERS design teams and creators and talent from Machinima for the Transformers Generations: More than Meets the Eye panel. In this session, fans will get to view never before seen content from the anticipated digital series from Machinima, Transformers Combiner Wars, which is the first installment of the Generations Prime Wars Trilogy, launching on August 2nd. Stop by the Hasbro booth at 12:30 p.m. following the panel for an autograph session with some of the creators behind this new series.

A representation of TRANSFORMERS voice talent throughout the years will also be joining us for the Transformers Animation: Then & Now panel on Thursday, July 21st at 2:00 p.m. Don't miss a chance to see some of your favorite voice actors from TRANSFORMERS ROBOTS IN DISGUISE, along with special guests from the TRANSFORMERS lore. MY LITTLE PONY
The MY LITTLE PONY brand is returning to Comic-Con this year with the new MY LITTLE PONY GUARDIANS OF HARMONY line, featuring detailed figures based on fan-favorite characters with increased articulation, entertainment-inspired deco, and a wide range of expression and emotion, allowing fans to create more elaborate storytelling through action and adventure based play. In addition to checking out the new product line, fans can also stop by the booth to help spread the magic of friendship by making a pledge to "Friend it Forward" in honor of the International Day of Friendship on July 30th.

See the voice talent from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic at the brand's panel on Friday, July 22nd at 10:30 a.m. for a special sneak peek at an upcoming episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, an early look at the new movie My Little Pony Equestria Girls Legend of Everfree coming this Fall, and more. Following the panel, don't miss the opportunity to meet the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic voice talent for an autograph signing at 12:00 p.m. in the Hasbro booth.

Other exciting MY LITTLE PONY brand booth activities include an autograph signing with The Wonderbolts Handbook author, Brandon T. Snider on Thursday, July 21st at 11:30 a.m., and a live drawing session with MY LITTLE PONY IDW artists Tony Fleecs and Agnes Garbowska on Sunday, July 24th at 12:30 p.m.

STAR WARS
Following the success of STAR WARS: The Force Awakens and in anticipation of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story releasing on December 16, 2016, STAR WARS fans will be eager to stop by Hasbro's Comic-Con booth for exciting reveals and hands-on product experiences.

Join members of the Hasbro STAR WARS team for a panel on Friday, July 22nd at 12:00 p.m. to discuss the popular product line. Attendees will get an in-depth look at Hasbro's latest action figure offerings, and word on the Holonet is there may also be a few surprises, including a special product reveals. Following the panel, fans can swing by the Hasbro booth at 1:30 p.m. to check-out the Hasbro design team in action as they begin the sketch for the 2016 Black Series fan vote winning figure. And don't miss the opportunity to pose in the booth wearing your favorite Star Wars cosplay and post your photo on Twitter using #HasbroSWCosplay for a chance to win the convention exclusive STAR WARS: THE BLACK SERIES Figure.

Other exciting STAR WARS activities you won't want to miss include poster giveaways, cosplay contests and STAR WARS Bladebuilders lightsaber training sessions.

MARVEL
It's a big year for the Marvel Universe with the release of Captain America: Civil War and the 75th anniversary of Captain America. In celebration, fans can pose like the first avenger in a life-sized Marvel Legends action figure package, complete with Hasbro's Marvel Legends Captain America 75th Anniversary Metal Shield. Fans who share a photo of their heroic pose using #HasbroCap75th on Twitter or Instagram will be entered into the Marvel Legends Shield-a-Day Giveaway for a chance to take home their very own Marvel Legends Captain American 75th Anniversary Metal Shield.

Hasbro's Marvel team will also be hosting a panel on Saturday, July 23rd at 4:00 p.m. to talk about the latest and greatest additions to the Marvel Legends line and share some exciting reveals of figures to come in 2017.

MAGIC: THE GATHERING
Be on the lookout for the powerful Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker character that will be roaming the Hasbro booth floor. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet with the talented creators behind Wizards of the Coast and Magic: The Gathering during autograph sessions with designers Mark Rosewater and James Wyatt. PIE FACE
Hasbro has teamed up with Cartoon Network to bring the hilarious PIE FACE game to Comic-Con. Fans can visit the Petco Park Interactive Zone where Cartoon Network will host a PIE FACE experience with a larger-than-life game, trivia, prizes and of course, whipped cream. The PIE FACE activation will run Thursday, July 21st through Saturday, July 23rd from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 24 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

YO-KAI WATCH
The YO-KAI WATCH brand and mischievous Yo-kai are headed to Comic-Con for the first time this year. Fans can learn all about the phenomenon in three different locations throughout the show: the Hasbro booth at the Convention Center, the YO-KAI WATCH booth at Petco Park and the Play Nintendo Family Lounge at the Marriot Marquis & Marina.

In the Hasbro booth at the Convention Center, fans can get a sneak peek at the full line up of Hasbro's YO-KAI WATCH toys, including Season 2 products such as the new YO-KAI WATCH Model Zero and Yo-Motion Yo-kai Medals that bring Yo-kai characters to life in a new way.

Additionally, in the Hasbro Booth, join members of the Hasbro Gaming team for hands-on demonstrations of the new YO-KAI WATCH Trading Card game on Friday, July 22nd at 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, July 23rd at 5:00 p.m. Exclusive San Diego Jibanyan YO-KAI WATCH Trading Cards will be given away during these sessions.

In the Play Nintendo Family Lounge, fans can try out the upcoming YO-KAI WATCH 2: Bony Spirits and YO-KAI WATCH 2: Fleshy Souls video games. #Botcon 2016 Japanese G1 Continuity Talk with Hayato Sakamoto

At this panel, Sakamoto talked about his working as an artist for IDW’s Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye comic series, as well as his working as both a writer and an artist for the TakaraTomy’s Transformers: Unite Warriors and Transformers: Legends pack-in fiction. (For those interested, you can watch a full YouTube video recording of the panel HERE).

After the panel ended, I approached the three as they were exiting the room (heading back to Sakamoto-san’s booth in the Artist Alley room) to ask Sakamoto-san some questions about his Japanese G1 works. Having an affinity for continuity and lore, Sakamoto-san was quite enthusiastic to discuss these topics with me. I joined the three on their walk back to the Artist Alley, introducing myself to Andrew Hall who recognized my screenname. Once we got to Sakamoto-san’s booth, Ken Rose graciously acted as a translation middleman between the two of us.

Most of my questions originated from what was said during the panel about the continuity placements of Unite Warriors Offshoot and Legends, which then springboarded into a wider discussion of the Japanese G1 cartoon continuity as a whole. Here is a rundown of the things we discussed and the answers I was able to get (note that Sakamoto-san’s attention eventually became divided between myself and other fans who were wanting him to sign and/or draw something for them, so some of the answers I got were less clear than others):

* As said during the panel, Unite Warriors Offshoot and the specific Legends manga chapters that have G1 Megatron, Ultra Magnus, and Springer come into the Legends Universe all take place after G2. But more specifically, they all take place after the two e-HOBBY manga that came with Masterpiece MP-1B Convoy Black Ver. And Masterpiece MP-3G Starscream Ghost Ver.

* As the Legends manga chapter that has Springer go to the Legends Universe takes place in the 2030s, with Operation Combination and United EX set in the year 2035, that era of Legends (and I think Unite Warriors Offshoot as well) takes place in the late 2030s.

* Unite Warriors Offshoot takes place even after the post-G2/post-e-HOBBY era of Legends. However, Sakamoto-san does not yet know how long or short after Legends that UWO takes place, as Legends currently has Metroplex in the Legends Universe while UWO has him in the main JG1 universe, so Sakamoto does not yet know when Metroplex gets out of the Legends Universe and goes back to the JG1 universe. But he does at least know that UWO does come after Legends.

* Unlike the rest of the Unite Warriors fiction released so far, the Grand Galvatron comic does not take place in the same post-G2/post-e-HOBBY era as UWO. Though the comic does say that it takes place ten years after Galvatron’s death in 2011 (2021), Sakamoto further revealed that it takes place after the Masterforce cartoon.

* As stated at the panel, one of the things Sakamoto set out to do with the Legends manga was to show Ultra Magnus’s rebirth into his G2 Laser Ultra Magnus body. However, in the Legends manga that showed Ultra Magnus’s rebirth, Ultra Magnus is shown waking up from inside his coffin in his Legends toy body instead. When asked if Ultra Magnus was reborn in his G2 Laser Ultra Magnus body or his Legends toy body, Sakamoto said it was the former, and explained that manga chapter as being more of a retelling of Magnus’s rebirth than a literal depiction. He also explained that Ultra Magnus can change his physical form back and forth between his G2 Laser body and his Legends body by the power of the Reconfiguration Matrix. This explains how Magnus was able to appear in his G2 Laser body during the post-G2 e-HOBBY manga and then as his Legends body later on in the Legends manga.

* Reiterating something he said at the panel, when Alpha Trion sacrificed the last of his energy to recharge the Matrix in episode 3 of The Headmasters, he didn’t merely recharge the Matrix, he became the Matrix. A new Matrix, at that. And this Matrix being a new one is why Rodimus Prime (or rather, his animation model) looked different in The Headmasters compared to how he looked in season 3 of the G1 cartoon. And in the Legends manga, when Alpha Trion put himself into Ultra Magnus’s chest, Ultra Magnus came back to life by having the new Matrix (Alpha Trion) put into him.

* As he referred to the Grand Scourge comic to present the continuity placements of UWO and Legends during the panel, I asked him if the Grand Scourge comic is supposed to be a part of the main JG1 cartoon continuity or not, as the comic itself is rather vague on its own continuity, seemingly on purpose. Sakamoto’s answer is that he’s presently not sure if it is or not since he’s not the one writing it. As I type this answer, I suspect that Sakamoto is open to the possibility of the comic being on its own outside of the JG1 continuity, and is just taking precautions with the placements of UWO and Legends to allow the Grand Scourge comic to be slotted into the main timeline should the opportunity arise at a later date. But for right now, its placement in the main timeline (should it ever be included) remains undetermined.

* As stated at the panel, Sakamoto is among those responsible for creating the big JG1 timeline from 2007. He confirmed that he played a role in adding Car Robots to the timeline. His reasons given for including it were that RobotMasters Wrecker Hook is an amnesiac Car Robots Wrecker Hook (I did not get to ask if this was the official consensus or just his own personal consensus), Brave Maximus came back to Earth after Car Robots (and apparently so too did God Magnus, from what I was told, but didn’t get anything further about that), and that when the e-HOBBY G1 GoBots came to the Transformers universe, their technology was used to create the Spychangers.

* At the end of the Car Robots cartoon, Brave Maximus had taken all of the Destrongers back to Cybertron to stand trial before Vector Sigma. Since the characters of that cartoon were said to have come from the future, I asked if Brave Maximus took them back to the Cybertron of the cartoon’s present time or the Cybertron of future that the characters all came from. Sakamoto said it was the future.

* In the Legends manga that features Car Robots Black Convoy (RiD Scourge), he has his own Energon Matrix, as a means of explaining the molded-in Matrix on the toy. Sakamoto explains that Black Convoy was able to get an Energon Matrix of his own because the United EX fiction had the Energon Matrix technology being developed in the year 2035. And since Black Convoy had been taken back to Cybertron in the future, he was able to get his Energon Matrix during a point when Energon Matrix technology existed.

* When asked to tell more about how Black Convoy got his Energon Matrix, Sakamoto said that he’s waiting for a Unite Warriors Baldigus release before saying any more about that. I didn’t get to ask if he meant that there is a Unite Warriors Baldigus coming, or if he’s just wanting there to be one.

* Sakamoto told me an in-fiction reason for why Car Robots Ai and the human Ai Kuruma looks alike. Car Robots Ai's appearance is based on a scan made of Ai Kuruma.

* I asked Sakamoto if he could tell me what exactly a Spark Engine was, as it was only mentioned once in the Car Robots anime but never told what it was. Unfortunately, this question didn't get to be answered. I don't fully recall why it wasn't answered, but I think it was either due to the answer being tied with the Black Convoy question that he was waiting on a UW Baldigus release in order to answer, or was due to Sakamoto's attention becoming divided between my questions and other fans coming to his booth to ask for his autograph/artwork.

* When asked what future era the Car Robots characters hail from, Sakamoto said that it’s currently fuzzy on what era they came from. When I mentioned that some fans like to think that they come from the same era as the Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo cast, he said that that idea pretty much aligns with his own ideas (of note is that a small book of his original artwork that he had for sale at his booth contained a page of artwork that featured Big Convoy and JRX together on Cybertron, but it wasn’t official art, just one of his many personal art pieces).

* Sakamoto also asked me if I work on the TFWiki, and I said yeah. Sakamoto told me a few things that he’d like to see on the Wiki. Specifically, he’d like to see more images overall of artwork, especially more images of full-body character artwork. I told him that, while I do contribute to the Wiki, I’m not a member of its administrative staff, and that the Wiki does have some policies regarding what images it uses and such, but which are reasonable.


I think that’s everything we got to discuss before the convention ended. If I remember any more, I’ll add more to it.
