Irish animation studio Boulder Media has been acquired by Hasbro in a deal that greatly expands the Rhode Island-based toyco’s TV and feature film animation capabilities.
Terms of the transaction, which closed today, were not disclosed.
Founded in 2000 by Robert Cullen, the Dublin-based service studio has worked on Disney’s Wander Over Yonder, Go Jetters and Danger Mouse for BBC, as well as a crop of Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon series.
As a wholly owned subsidiary, Boulder, which currently has 150 employees, will continue to make toons on behalf of third-party clients, in addition to producing animated projects for Hasbro brands. Boulder will retain its brand name and the subsidiary will report into Stephen Davis, who as EVP and chief content officer leads Hasbro’s entertainment and consumer products licensing division.
Hasbro is no stranger to the world of storytelling. The company’s Hasbro Studios and its film label Allspark Pictures create entertainment brand-driven narratives across television, film and digital. And the company’s Entertainment and Licensing unit was a big winner in fiscal 2015, with double-digit revenue growth that brought in US$244.7 million, partly driven by the multi-year digital streaming deals inked for Hasbro Studios’ television programming in the first quarter of last year.

IDW Publishing Announces Editorial Shifts and Promotions
Editors Sarah Gaydos and Denton Tipton Promoted To Group Editor and Senior Editor
San Diego, CA (July 12, 2016) – IDW Publishing has promoted two of its key editorial staff members, Sarah Gaydos and Denton Tipton. Both will continue to report to Editor-in-Chief/Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall.
Sarah has been promoted from Editor to the position of Group Editor. Sarah began her position at IDW in 2013 after six years of editing at DC/WildStorm. She has overseen the Star Trek and Disney lines to great success among other high profile titles including Cartoon Network’s Powerpuff Girls plus critically acclaimed creator-driven titles such as Satellite Falling. In her new role, she will take on various Hasbro licenses including Jem and the Holograms. She loves cats and burritos.
Denton has been promoted from Editor to the position of Senior Editor. A former journalist at the San Diego Union-Tribune as well as comics retailer, Denton joined IDW in 2008 and edits such series as X-Files, Dirk Gently, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Judge Dredd, Orphan Black, the upcoming Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me, and more exciting projects yet to be announced. He loves dogs and Night Court reruns.
As part of these editorial shifts, IDW Publishing bids a fond farewell to Group Editor John Barber who previously edited Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye, Micronauts, and Jem and the Holograms. In addition, John has contributed as a writer to such titles as Transformers, Back to the Future, and the upcoming event series, Revolution. John will remain creatively involved with IDW, writing a secret project yet-to-be-unveiled that spins out Revolution.
“As much as we’re all sad to see John Barber leave his key editorial spot at IDW, the change does also provide the opportunity to advance Sarah and Denton in well-earned ways,” said IDW’s Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall. “And it also means we’ll be seeing additional writing projects from John as well, which is another bit of good news for IDW. John is a key part of Revolution and the events that spin out of it, and he’ll continue to help steer this new direction on a couple titles we’re excited to be announcing at SDCC a little later this month.”

Where are the areas of improvement for Hasbro in the UK and Ireland and how are you looking to tackle these?
The team has done a phenomenal job in all areas. The key for our team is to be relentlessly focused on driving our business, understanding our consumer and connecting with them across all possible touch points.
Simply put, we must not be satisfied with our current momentum and always be seeking out new opportunities to connect with our consumer.
[...]
Having moved to the UK from the US, what do you view as the key differences for Hasbro between both markets?
Simply put, there are many differences and many similarities, but that is only on the surface. I want to immerse myself in the culture, learn from my team, our retailer partners and the consumers.
I was born and raised in Canada and have lived in the USA for the past nine years. I have been fortunate to travel to and work in many countries and know that many differences exist, but the common bonds are also very strong. I can’t wait to learn more about these great countries and their people.

Plane ticket and hotel booked? Check. Cosplay costume packed? Check. Panel and shopping list made? Double check.
As you can guess, this is no ordinary to do-list. It’s related to a very special time of year when comic-enthusiasts are glowing in anticipation – or maybe it’s just the reflection from their Star Wars lightsabers? That’s right, the biggest pop culture event in the world, Comic Convention in San Diego, is only two weeks away!
As most proud, self-proclaimed geeks – like me – know, this international annual convention is four full days packed with can't-miss panels, meet and greets, screenings, and seminars, plus thousands of comics, movie, and science fiction lovers in the most elaborate cosplay costumers ever.
While I sit here at my desk buzzing with anticipation, I can totally relate to the feeling Ray, Egon, Winston and Venkman had right before they crossed the streams for the first time to defeat the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (#Ghostbusters #dontcrossthestreams). Who can’t wait to see endless lines of people waiting for a panel discussions with some of the best in the industry? This lady. Who can’t wait to trip over yet another white and flowy Princess Leia dress while waiting in the bathroom line? Yup, me again!
However, the one thing I truly am so excited for is to meet with my fellow die-hard collectors at the Entertainment Earth booth (#2343). You’ll find me there with the rest of the Toys“R”Us team and our lineup of exclusive figures, building sets and more – so call upon your inner Jedi (or Darth Vader, if that’s your thing), and stop by early to get first-dibs!
If you need me, I’ll be gazing at my collection and #fangirling until the convention starts, but to satiate fans’ appetites, we’ve included the full list of exclusive products that Toys“R”Us will have at the Entertainment Earth booth (#2343) and online at Toysrus.com/ComicConvention from Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24, below!
