Much like for the Optimus Prime figure, newsed with its review here, we have recently seen in-hand images of the latest figures from Hasbro's Transformers Power of the Primes line, as shown in Hong Kong and Shanghai events with fans of the toys and the franchise. Once more via YouTuber Kevin Liu now we also have a full review (in Mandarin, and in addition to the previously seen clip by Liu) for the newest Voyager version of the Elected Supreme Ruler of Cybertron, the Chosen One, and general fan-favourite: Starscream.

The full video can be seen embedded below, but we've also included a couple of screenshots for those unable to watch right away, showing comparisons in jet mode with Masterpiece Starscream, and in robot mode with wave mate Grimlock, plus a look at all the stickers on the figure, the transformation, Prime Master compatibility, Prime Armor, torso mode, and a preliminary combination with Dreadwind and Aerialbots from the previous line of Combiner Wars. Check it all out!

Aside from how bad the stickers look on the off gray, I see some potential in this new Starscream.

You're just pushing your bias of disliking season 3 as some excuse to say 'its not the same show' as G1. That movie and the third season are very much part the same toyline, same show and were made by the same people. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean its not part of the G1 lineup. That is about as valid as me saying, for example, that Beast Hunters is not 'really' part of Transformers Prime or that anything from Age of Extinction is not 'really' part of the Bayverse. This is not the same as Beast Machine, for example, which had a different staff and was a soft reboot on the story and basically had little understanding of what came before.

Generation 1 functionally ended, brand-wise, when Generation 2 was a term coined for their first attempt a reboot which is where we got the term G1 to begin with. Now I'm sure we could argue that the japanese line and post cartoon and 'euro G1' may very well constitute a G1.5 so to speak which I'd very much agree.

Unless your excuse for saying season 3 isn't G1 is that its when they started making their own toy designs rather than just importing Diaclone. That would certainly be a more valid statement than simply saying 'G1 ended because I didn't like that part of it'.

Edit: I should point out that, as angry as this make you, I do consider Beast Wars to be part of G1. But not being G1. There is a difference. They are very much set within the same universe and continuity but these series and toylines are separated by a time gap but in universe and out universe.

Why are you trying to pick a fight? His first statement was "G1 to me ended in 1989, or 1990 if I'm feeling generous -- but I've acknowledged that "G1" has broadened its scope a bit, so I've adjust my head-canon as well....but I'm admittedly new to all the monkey business involving Beast Wars and beyond."
And before that he called Optimal Optimus a G1 figure, which you called him out on. Obviously he stopped following G1 before it actually ended and is just now getting back into the swing of things. What he actually said was that, if he's going to be extremely technical, HIS idea of a generation 1 and 2 of transformers would be when they literally passed the torch on to a new generation of characters in the movie, but he isn't imposing that idea onto anybody else. Chill out dude.

As for the toys..... I appreciate the idea of making a giant Optimus Prime out of his cab and trailer but it's just too much visual cheating to me. The actual Optimus Prime is about 99% fake kibble, since the only parts of him that are actually part of the truck are the leg wheels. Also the trailer transformation is just a giant shellformer. Maybe Rodimus will look better, otherwise, I'm staying away from leaders until Primal.

unless I decide to just get this guy to face off with my CW Megatron, since he's off my main CHUG shelf after I picked up a Classics Megs for cheap at a con.

That Starscream looks like an upscaled Legends figure. Or a crappy KO. What the hell Hasbro??? :(

Is it just me, or does Starscream's torso mode remind anyone else of Movie Starscream's robot mode?

I agree with you on that; maybe Hasbro is trying to mimic the homage of Movie Starscream's face on Prime Starscream's chest.

So I was wondering, given that everything in those leaks proved true so far and with Elita-1 and Moonracer were shown as well as Fire/Novastar, what are the odds of the 'Female Autobots' having enough members to form a full combiner? Granted, this is not a team I'd want to primarily display combined, but it seems that if that specific Autobot team is getting some love might as well go all-out, no?

Chromia already got a Generations toy so I doubt she'll get a new one so my guess being that its either an incomplete team or they'll give a figure to Greenlight and Lancer. Part of me doubt it, given they are beyond obscure, but you gotta admit these would certainly help vary the palette a bit more from pastel colors.

Yeah but Windblade got a Generations and TR figure...so who's to say we won't get a superior Chromia retool of Afterburner? :-? Personally I'd prefer a boxier and less feminine looking Chromia.

Windblade is the character Hasbro is trying really hard to make us like. Chromia is just Chromia. Unfortunately.

But she does have a toy out in the wild, making her a more likely candidate for Hasbro to pitch to non-collectors. Unlike Firestar or Moonracer who've never seen release in toy form.

Well I'm no marketing guy so I can't say for sure. I just know I'd like to see a serious retool of the Groove/Afterburner mold as Chromia if they plan to make a full team for Elita-1's gang.

As I said, same :D

I'm curious as to what her combined form will look like. That's to say the full combination. I really love the torso form of the Starscream mold and I'm excited to see what it's going to look like in her colors.

Just a reminder of what we have to be excited about...

It would be nice but its unlikely given Liokaiser already saw release. Granted they could just release him as a torso exclusive to some retailer, with the implication that he replace angry green Sky Lynx 'Deszarus'.

That’s actually what I was hoping for, and wouldn’t be surprised if it happened that way.

Worst case scenario, I grab a second one and get a buddy of mine (who’s a professional customizer) to do the dirty work for me.

Inferno is giving me the odd hope that PotP will see some more remolding and 'upgrade' to some CW molds. Oh sure, some will say it is lazy, but part of me think this is not inherently a bad thing if we are going to get some new combiner teams. Why do I do find such lazyness a good thing? Because it mean a wide range of molds if they can draw from the engineering of the past line and use some new molds. This is great if they want to make full teams with vehicular combiner limbs, as we already got molds for car, trucks, jets and all that, leaving open a chunk of the budget for these all-new molds which can allow for animalistic combiners (Volcanicus, Abominus, Monstructor and Piranacon). That way if they want to give more Autobot limbs to hang with Jazz and Inferno they can at a fraction of the cost. Same if they want to make a Turbomaster combiner because...hey...everything is a combiner these days!

Dreadwind is already a retooled Aerialbot, after all, and he wears it quite nicely from the looks of it.

Edit: I should point out I'm only in favor of this if the budget is spent remolding these pre-existing designs rather than just doing more repaint. Looking at YOU, Alpha-Vortex.

I apologize if I came off in any way to offend, Skritz. I also only recently got back into collecting and Transformers in general, thanks to Combiner Wars.

I like Season 3, honestly. Sure, my world was a bit shattered after the death of Optimus, so for me, the new cast of characters after The Movie were literally a new generation (not what the general fandom may call G2!). I never read the UK comics or watched Victory. All I know about them I learned from TFWiki.

Since joining these boards, my definition of "G1" has expanded, and I say we're in alignment on BW being part of G1, but isn't G1. And that's after only 5 episodes into the first season of Beast Wars (I've already been spoiled on the "tie-in")! ;)^

Nah, s'cool man. I sort of knee-jerked and jumped at the gun going 'oh look its another geewunner whining they ruined Transformers when Optimus died' which basically equate to, well, again, me being rude and assuming things. Its entirely my mistake.

Defining 'G1' and what is and isn't G1 is certainly a headache for many people due to it having many concurrent incarnations during its heyday and modern incarnation. To make an odd (or not) comparison it is very similar to those anime where the manga, anime and even OVA diverge heavily from the same basic source material and the whole thing gets further muddled by later incarnations of the franchise.

If its hard for fans to even explain it to other fans you can imagine how even harder it is to explain it to non-fans and outsiders how these shows and movies tie together and don't tie together. :HEADHURTS:

You said it, Skritz -- a co-worker told me how much she loved Optimus Prime the other day (I have a G1 Optimus Prime bust on my desk), and I asked if she had introduced her son to the 80s cartoon.....but she only knew of Optimus from the Bayverse movies.

I've only seen the first two Bayverse movies in their entirety, and truly appreciate what they did for the brand -- without them, who knows if Transformers would be back in the mainstream like they are!

To me, the PotP Leaders are like a childhood dream come true -- now if they gave me a Leader Megatron that evolved into Galvatron, I would be over the dark of the moon. :CON:

Well, as much as I didn't like the G1 cartoon, I always liked the smaller cast that consisted of Hot Rod, Kup, Arcee, Blurr, Ultra Magnus, Wheelie, and Wreck-Gar. 11 characters less than the S1 cast (which to me consisted of a few remolds and character duplicates). Even though we get more combiners and old characters in the background, I feel more interested with the S3 cast (and other smaller casts in future franchises).

Soo. I watched the first Voyager Starscream review, which was in Chinese. you could clearly tell when he was saying words like "Starscream" "Power of the Primes", "Prime Master" etc.... But if he said the name of Starscreams combined form I missed it, and he didn't really show the instruction sheet in full detail.

Welcome to the boards.

The hinges and swivels in the ankles may make it look like they are floating. It should be possible to bring them down a bit and make them look more cohesive.

The combination between Pax and the trailer happens at the chest only, which is why Prime gets such a messy backpack full of Orion Pax legs.

That Optimus may have some messy elements, but you gotta admit that in many aspects this easily one of the most G1-esque Optimus Prime in years. That headsculpt is not only spot on but absolutely lovely.

By the way, since earlier in the thread I mentionned the possibility of PotP re-using more CW molds and engineering: who here think a retooled and upgraded Motormaster/Optimus as Thunderclash would rock? All they would need, imo, is to keep the fixed hip and retool him so his arms lock into place better.

Even though I was born & bred to follow G1 Optimus, I absolutely agree season 3's smaller cast was appreciated. But the characters were still fairly straightforward.

Yes, and make sure his "bucklers"/combiner feet have a turbine aesthetic and can peg into his back to replicate his IDW look.

You do make a valid point on perfectly decent molds existing already for reuse in POP, all that truly needs to be retooled on CW figures is a peg hole into their chests to accommodate the Prime Master armor/hands. I'm honestly hoping we get a US released Nightbird toy. She can be easily retooled from one of Elita-1's limbs. Heck, they can even just repaint Dust Up.

1. Really Hoping UW comes back
2. Not sure on the whole Leozack from Starscream thing....

:TAKARATOMY: seems to be ok on new ideas (Lynx Master, Grand Convoy, Grand Galvatron, Megatronia etc...). But if its an already existing combiner, they probably want to do it right, or not at all.

You know, I still think UW missed an opportunity by not recoloring CW Optimus into Grand Convoy, with four limbs matching his Super Link/Energon mini-cons. I mean, they made the Nosecone mold which is perfect for the driller and Rook would have made a good replacement for the firetruck as well as a decent submarine if you remove the wheels.

If you think about it however the Energon Optimus "limbs" were just drones. I, for one, like what UW did with Optimus/Convoys, they gave me the toy Hasbro should have been advertising, instead of trying to stick those limbs with the white Optimus. While its true they did release baldigus, that was because it was so straight up and easy to do. I'm kind of surprised they didn't try to do Guard City & battle Gaia first actually....but who knows maybe they will be late offerings after they run out of PotP material...

If you think about it however the Energon Optimus "limbs" were just drones. I, for one, like what UW did with Optimus/Convoys, they gave me the toy Hasbro should have been advertising, instead of trying to stick those limbs with the white Optimus. I'm just pointing out that we had an Optimus who was:
1) A combiner torso who attach four limbs.
2) With a boxy but modernized truck mode.
3) And whose combined mode make use of an opening chest panel visual with clearly matrix-inspired molding inside.

How did anyone at Takara not see this and want to make it in Grand Convoy will remain a goddamn mystery to me because it was the perfect mold for an update.

Ironhide: Fire 1
Prowl: Copter 2
Sunstreaker: Digger 3
Mirage: Submarine 4

The colors match, and that's all they were willing to do. Frankly, a submarine has no real reuse, not to mention no characters assigned to either vehicle, so it probably wasn't in the cards anyway.

Skipping the PotP Optimus Prime, just looks too messy in every mode but Orion Pax.

The more I see the Deluxe Dinbots the more I want 'em, despite planning my budget to get the Terrorcons. Argh.

Looks like we're in the same boat. Cost-wise for both per wave...

Wave 1: Swoop, Slug, Grimlock
Wave 2: Sludge, Snarl, Hun-Gurr, Rippersnapper
Wave 3: Cutthroat, Sinnertwin, Blot

Huh, Wave 3 is the cheapest, followed by 1, then 2.

My problem is that, unlike you, I want those Leader Class figures in Wave 1. Which was one motivating factor for getting Dinobots and waiting for Wave 2 and 3 to get a full combiner. Plus Dreadwind and Darkwing.

Skritz wrote:That Optimus may have some messy elements, but you gotta admit that in many aspects this easily one of the most G1-esque Optimus Prime in years.

I had a crazy thought. Magnus was one of the poll characters to be included in this line. It almost seems unlikely they'll have the budget to tool too many more leaders...

So this occurred to me.

What if they did a heavy retool of Orion as the armored Ultra Magnus who combined with a trailer to become Giant White Optimus Prime? Flipping which was the inner and outer bot?

Minimus Ambus would be a better fit for the mold, and it would make sense, contextually.

Better yet, why not Dion out of Orion with the white Optimus? Finally put that theory to rest. 8-}

Although I really enjoyed CW Ultra Magnus, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a PotP version -- but don't expect it.

Even though I expected to see PotP on shelves this week at Target, it still seems they're "in the back". Using Brickseek, there's still no sign of Prime Masters, Voyagers or Leaders.

Have the Legends and Deluxes been spotted outside the US?

I can't recommend Swoop & Slash enough.

Yeah why some Targets are stocking them and some are not is mind boggling. If shelves are empty...get them out there...I'm hoping Black Friday cleared out most of the glut of TR deluxe repack wave 4 that was clogging most of the Targets in my area, but I haven't been to one since before all the sales to see for myself.

Also, just out of curiousity, is there any way to increase Brickseeks range? I mean by default it gives me results from the closest 20 Target stores (which for me is within a 40 mile radius of my home) which is pretty good. I'd just like to know the closest store that currently has any Legends Class PotP (only Deluxes in my area)...not that I would drive all the way there, just curious though... ;)

*edit* never mind, I just played with the zipcodes, searching major areas in all directions of my home. The closest right now that has any Legends class is about 120 miles away...I can wait.

I haven't seen anything to extend the distance of inventory availability for brickseek (unless you upgrade and pay for their Premium membership!), but I have been using Google-fu to look for other zip codes to enter when I'm curious.

I picked up a Jazz yesterday. He's pretty good, no RTS Jazz but good. Got the stupid little slogan in tiny print that's going to be removed. Passed on Slag for now. Not sure how I feel about tiny Dinobots.

*looks at AoE Dinobot scales*

*then looks at PotP Dinobot scales*

Only Sludge bucks the trend a little by being Deluxe instead of the Voyager that Slog was.

I've realized something: once I get Abominus (and he's still on top of my list for a complete combiner from PotP), I could very much assemble a variation of Abomenaticus or 'Destron Super Scramble' since I know a place which still has some Combaticons. Granted, I've been considering getting G2 Bruticus from said store to go alongside G2 Menasor: are the Combaticons worth it as a set? Note that I don't mind G2 coloring since I already got G2 Menasor and love his hilariously gaudy '90 color scheme.

I passed on G2 Fruiticus because 1) Lazy Hasbro forgot the G2 Symbols & 2) No G2 Defensor to go with him. If neither of those things bothers you however (which I'm sure most people don't care about) then go for it.
