That did happen in Marvel. He was about the same size as Fort Max, maybe a bit bigger. I always thought he was originally intended as Devastator's counter on the Autobot side. However, I do think he was phased out originally both in the comics and the cartoon because his toy was a total piece of crap and didn't sell.
