Checking with a Mod first to make sure non-Transformer Fan Fiction was ok to print here. I thought to give this one a go. I mentioned previously, I had additional completed pieces alongside Transformers: Rebellion. This isn't one of those. This is something new I was inspired to write recently. It isn't very long, only three parts. Which is why I thought to add it here. Plus, I'm not on any DW related forums etc The story itself, mixes a lot of different sci-fi elements I have a fondness for. Enjoy!

Doctor Who: The Doctor and The Daemon

Part 1 - The man from Mondas

Chapter One

'Dear Uncle,

Merry Christmas!

I hope this reaches you on time, as I was reassured six times that it would. Sadly I won't be able to make it back to you in time for our annual trip to Earth, to celebrate the season. Unavoidable I'm afraid, as my transmat locator was ...lost recently. More on that later. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the time off work and everyone on Callisto is doing well.'

'The Doctor just dropped by with some tea. He says 'hi' by the way. He asked me to apologise for my current predicament too. Yes, it was all his fault. So what's the story, you ask? Well.. we've recently got back from an interesting pocket dimension. The next on The Doctor's hit list. A lovely realm of nocturnal nightmares, tentatively called "The Well of Abaddon".'

'She is still most upset with you, Doctor. Even transcribing the events is elevating her blood pressure.' Continuing his rounds, the Doctor paid a call to his second companion. In the adjacent corridor. 'Yes, thank you Neil. I am aware.' A sideways nod and The Doctor took a seat on a small stool to the left. As, shaded safety goggles firmly attached, his companion tinkered with various pieces of technology, on a wide table filled with them. 'Those keen senses of yours are quite remarkable, my young Starchild.' The Doctor absently smiled, while occupying his hands with a Gallifreyan variant of a Rubik's Cube. 'I have already apologised profusely regarding her locator. Agreeing to this series of detours to further that apology.' While toying with his freshly crafted dual-headed Sonic Screwdriver, Neil stopped to address the elephant in the room. 'What is this locator thing used for anyway, Doctor? Diane has never really specified before. Only to rebuked my offer last night, in attempting to craft her a new one? Surely Callisto isn't an unknown location to the Tardis?

Satisfied now that his cube had become a prism - stage three complete - The Doctor placed his puzzle back into his inner jacket pocket, to address the question directly. ' In the 25th Century, the colony on Callisto has advanced safety protocols, to protect it's citizens. Gene-coded transmat locators. They admit only the colonists. Meanwhile, any unauthorised intrusion is ..relocated, to within the atmosphere of Jupiter. Death is guaranteed and quite painful.'
' That sounds unusually cruel and merciless, for human colonists?'

'Without context, yes. However, this moon has seen several invasions over their last hundred years. It is a key strategic gateway into the Solar System, for any large scale assault on Earth. Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen, Androids. These poor people have had to fight bitterly to maintain their home and freedom. The Dalek occupation in particular, lasted for several years. Costing many lives to eventually expel them.'
'It sounds tragic, for so few to bare such a burden. Guarding the gate from the barbarians. That said, it isn't the locator she is most upset about.'

'I see. The gun?'

'The gun. She purchased that for half a year's stipend from the Museum, you know. She's only mentioned it two or three.. hundred times. An "extremely rare, yet practical," piece.' Neil mimicking the regal tilt of her head, Diane subconsciously employs when she is really excited about her work.

'A Kaled gun, is no mere collectible trinket. Nor a regular firearm. The Tardis itself was no more comfortable with such technology onboard than I was.' The Doctor couldn't hide a sneer at the name.
'Yes, I know. We chatted about it just last week.
'Indeed. Technopathy. One of your most useful talents, young man. An ability my own people were historically very envious of. Still, guns of any kind among my companions disagrees with me. Some see their presence as security, as a deterrent. In my experience, they only invite further violence.' Now standing over Neil's shoulder, the Doctor held this retro-engineered Sonic device aloft, towards the lighting. Regarding it with awe and wonder.
'As a freelance interplanetary archaeologist, that gun gave her great piece of mind on her travels. Alone in an unarmed shuttle. It is a dangerous universe out there, Doctor, after all.'
'True. But not on this ship, nor should she have reason for that level of concern within my company.'

'..Then we were naked. I'm not sure if the Doctor was aware of this fact. An interesting side effect of the pocket dimension. inanimate objects are dissolved within the sheer darkness itself. I was clutching my satchel closely, which seemed to slow the decay somewhat. As we approached the "core", a strangely luminous pulsating obsidian sphere. I carefully began reaching for my gun inside the bag. When The Doctor "fumbled" into me. With a start, I immediately dropped everything. The gun, the satchel, the locator. All of it. It didn't even make a noise to indicate hitting the ground before evaporating. I was apoplectic with rage and began to loudly chastise the Doctor, who in turn meekly feigned clumsiness. Bear in mind uncle, we'd managed to navigate the pitch black without a single collision for several hours, until I began to draw the weapon. I imagine the visual capabilities of a Time Lord, far exceed that of human biology. Anyway, In a strange conclusion, the Doctor stood before the sphere and unfurled his right hand. Which had been clenched since we left the Tardis. Magnesium, uncle. He produced a small amount of magnesium powder. Immediately a brilliant white flash engulfed the scene. The disparity proved too intense for me and I was left temporarily blinded. I felt the Doctor's hand on my forearm. He gave reassuring words on the success of our mission and confessed his own blindness too. I might have started to panic, had I not heard Neil's nervous chuckle. I don't know how he found us. I chided him not to stare and help get us out of here.
That was it, uncle. We reached the Tardis soon after and I self consciously dashed to the safety of my room. I refused to talk to the Doctor for a week. But he.. he made a promise, to make it up to me. The promise of a lifetime.'

'So what will happen to poor Abaddon, Doctor? Aside from an unusual chemical smell. I didn't note any environmental change at all to the well?? Making a minor alteration, the Doctor placed the sonic device back on the table, with a pat on Neil's shoulder.
'There is a prophecy. I'm paraphrasing but "To bring light to the Well of Abaddon, nullifies it's power." That is why a corrosive element was generated by the atmosphere. Removing the inanimate, in general. Technology, specifically. It took me a few centuries to locate the well itself. Meanwhile, several lives ago, I thought out a low tech solution to the problem. So the next time Abaddon chooses to draw from his powerbase. The old devil will find it has.. run dry' The Doctor chuckled, while Neil groaned. 'Oh Doctor, how drool. How long had you been waiting to use that one?
'Several lives' They both heartily laughed.

'The promise was two-fold. Something too good for an archaeologist to stay mad at him. Oh uncle, we went to Ancient Egypt. To Alexandria. Yes, uncle. He took me to the Great Library! At it's peak, no less. Around 147 BC. The things I saw, the things I read! We were there for several weeks. The Doctor permitted me to take notes, but leave everything where it was. He seemed to have a friendship with the head librarian. How vast a web of contacts does he possess, I wonder? It was there he brought to my attention a particular map. The oldest scroll in the entire library. I was aghast, uncle, after reading it. Although the Egyptian names were different. The map referred to Atlantis, Lemuria and Mu. I looked questioning at The Doctor, earnest for confirmation. He put away that puzzle sphere of his for a moment, smiles benevolently and vouched for it. Tears were in my eyes at the authenticity of such a thing. That's when he planted both hands on my shoulders and whispered into my ears. 'Let's be off then! I assume you want to see them in person?' My eyes widened and I was shaking, as he led me back to the Tardis. 'Mu first, I think. The safest of the three.'
Sweet Dorothy, uncle! The lost continents are real!!!'

'So where are we off to next? Another marker on your hit list?' The Doctor huffed at the title. 'It isn't a "hit list", I wish Ms Garrod hadn't popularised that description. It is a list of aims I set myself to achieve within this lifetime. And, no, this is the second part of my promise to Diane for losing her belongings. In a few hours, we will be touching down on 12th Century Earth. Upon Mount Everest, as it will be known, to be exact.'
'Oh that sounds.. inhospitable. I think I'll decline this one too. Arid deserts to frozen peaks. When are we going to a climate that's a bit more pleasant, Doctor?' Neil stood from his stool. A looming Seven Feet tall figure, over the not so diminutive Doctor. ' You came to me, Neil of Raman. Remember? Sought me out across time and space. Looking for tutelage, for understanding. I will aid you in every way I can. But, your education isn't going to be a pleasure cruise. I will abide your absence once more, as this is a personal errand for Diane.' He began to leave the workshop/living quarters of his ward. 'But, please don't sleep in too late. I don't anticipate trouble, however, it is a dangerous universe out there.'

'On that bombshell I'll leave you, uncle. My next communication should be filled with Earth shattering revelations, I'm sure! Much love to all on Callisto and I'll come home soon, I swear.'

Sweet dreams from your ever grateful niece,
Diane

Chapter Two

>Journal entry: One - The Doctor<

'How would I describe the Doctor?'
Eccentric.
Being a daughter of Callisto, I can handle myself in a scrap, of course. Yet there was something quite disarming in this time traveller. When I first met him at the Museum, at a glance I just took him for security. There was a quality to his profile that deemed authority. Observing him closer than silhouette, his dress betrayed no uniform at all. I immediately knew he wasn't of the 25th century. In another setting, I would have taken him for an actor or cosplayer. Deep within the Pan Galactic Museum, I wondered how he even got past the guards with that get up? All Earth-based clothing. Shiny military boots, possibly 20th century? What I took to be dark olive green breeches, from a 17th century buccaneer? (From some early adventure in Cornwall, he would add later) a teal dress shirt (sleeves neatly rolled above his elbows) and a tan gilet. Occasionally over which is draped a weather worn, slightly oversized black duster Jacket. Which came from "an overly zealous young man from the 16th century". This adding to the vague law enforcement profile he cast on that day.
Added to that, was his appearance. The strong and stern features of his face. He claimed "this face" was chosen for him, to honour a human friend he served with in his youth. Somewhat dashing I suppose, in an old fashioned kind of way. He said, in order to visit the 20th century, he needed to obscure these features. Avoid facial hair (although I imagine a moustache would quite suit him?) and keep his hair cropped. Lest his appearance cause undue distress. It sounded like this regeneration selection process, however it was achieved, wasn't thought out very well? Or perhaps, such subterfuge was the intent behind it, after all?

Mount Everest - 12th Century Earth

Silence had fallen. Yet deep within the recesses, the air began to howl and groan, akin to an engine raging into life. As an innocuous blue Police Box materialised into existence, among strange surroundings. A door opens, casting light and sound into the gloom.
'So, I'd say we're at platform three? A lot quieter than norma... Hey!?' Diane practically bounded from the doorway. Shoving the doctor aside, with her camera in hand. 'Sorry Doctor, but I just couldn't hold back any longer and... I thought you said we were going to Mount Everest?'
'I did.'
'I expected a base camp, Sherpa and ...snow ?' Looking around quizzically. Clearly they were indoors, some cave system perhaps?. The adjoining tunnel around them was solid stone, with dripping stalactites. Diane couldn't help but notice that the floor was pristine metal and clearly manufactured to a very high standard. 'Where are we? This doesn't look very "12th century Earth" at all' At this point, the Doctor gently took her hand and proceeded to march towards the tunnel. 'Come along, Ms Garrod. It isn't too far.'
'Where is this ambient light coming from, Doctor? I would expect "gloomy cave" from these surroundings. Yet I can see everything. But I can't see any light fixtures either? She began to lightly press on the walls, to seek out the artificial among the rock. Unsuccessfully.
'No need for the frown, my dear. The Mu'on developed a sophisticated, prism based system. It stores and diffuses any light source into the immediate area. This port is currently being illuminated by the Tardis beacon.' He saw her eyes light up at the mention of the name. The science wasn't as important to an Archaeologist as the name of those that developed it. 'Yes, the Mu'on. The people of Mu. Masters of dimensional technology. The most advanced race ever to walk the Earth. Ah, here we go...
They left the tunnel, the walls and ceiling falling away to highlight to vastness of the area ahead. As they did so, the Doctor pointed out the polished, prism surround of the doorway. Also a nod to the parallel system at the opposite end they had passed. At which point the Doctor paused just short of a narrowing descending staircase, looking around. Stoic but slightly unnerved.
'Expecting some kind of reception by now?' Her own feelings being more of disappointment than anxiety. Were they really in the right place? Maybe this was some formerly manned outpost??
'Quite. Today marks the last celestial eclipse of this century. The last time Mu is naturally accessible, prior to the Time War proclamation. Their calendars are based around these events. Joyous occasions filled with celebrations of life and song. We should have been inundated with revellers by now, so close to the city nexus.' He was halfway down the staircase, before he paused his ramblings. '...All of which, means very little to you I imagine, Diane?' He turned back to her, still stood atop the stairs, a little abashed.

'Quite.' She smirked, skipping quickly down the stairs to meet him. 'Although I did hear "city nexus" among the lecture, which did pique my curiosity.' She slipped her arm around his and rested her head on his shoulder. 'Lead the way, Doctor Tour Guide!' With a sigh, they continued down the stairs.
The freestanding flight of stairs ended with a wide, circular mesh gantry. Which surrounded a massive stone pillar. Carvings adorned every inch of it and Diane's eyes widened to a comical degree, the closer they came. 'By the Eighty Spheres! She disengaged from the Doctor and quickly had several pieces of equipment from her new satchel in hand, before uttering another word. 'What am I looking at?' She said as her hands traced many light reliefs.
'This is the history of Mu. The Mu'on don't have museums, libraries etc. They believe in free cultural exchange. Hence each entrance port, houses one such pillar for visitors to study. When you reach the city nexus, you reciprocate. I chose this port specifically for you. As this is their history. The others are for language, mathematics, science, philosophy etc Thanks to the Tardis, the language pillar isn't necessary for your first visit. He stepped back, arms folded and lent on the hand rail of the gantry. He felt her excitement was palpable as she scurried back and forth. Her mood was almost infectious.
'Hmm. I think, I could read this without the Tardis. The writings here, beside the pictures, seem to be a variant of Sanskrit? The Tardis is a big help with the variation however. I think I'll be here a while yet, Doctor. If no one shows up in the meantime, can I ask you a question?'

'Of course, Diane. Ask away.'

'Who is Katarina?' The only time she turned her head away from the pillar. To emphasise the question. The shock on the Doctor's face paralleled that importance. 'May I ask how..?'
'Last night, Doctor. Our rooms are not that far from your own, after all. Every night this week you've cried out. Each night, a different name. Last night, Katarina. Before that, Adric. Then came Bill, and more besides. A quick glance back and she noted the Doctor squirming with each name. 'These nightmares of yours are strange in themselves. Not only have they been consistent. But each scream belongs to a different voice. The last one sounded particularly harrowing. It sounded like the poor girl suffered.'

'She.. They, were dear friends. Companions.. lost, during my travels. They have been on my mind lately. Evidently, troubling my subconscious too. Throughout this life, more than any other, I've being working towards trying to save them. Running through many scenarios in my head. Some of their deaths have marked fixed points in time. So I can't act recklessly, without consequence. A young woman named Sara Kingdom, is one such example.' He stared off into the middle distance, as if pondering many things at once.
'The first victim of the Time Destructor. The ultimate Dalek weapon. Even centuries into the future, I have heard of her.' Diane continued. When her eye was drawn to what appeared to be the second to last in the sequence of pillar reliefs. Depicting the sky above three peoples. A planet, much like Earth, emitting rays upon them. But the continents appeared to be upside down? Something about it was both familiar and really unsettling. 'So, what do you make of this Doctor? Some interpretive piece??' The Doctors feature turned grim.
'Mondas'
'The Tenth Planet of Sol?! Birth world of the ...Cybermen! How did the Mu'on know of it???' Diane was clearly alarmed at the connection. The Doctor pulled out his Sonic Screwdriver and inserted it, into a depression in the chest of the central figure. Suddenly every line and character on the pillar glowed a deep blue. Matching the end of the device. The reliefs became three dimensional and mobile. While audibly projecting additional text. In Gallifreyan.

'Millions of years ago, Mondas and Earth existed as twin planets, with a helical orbit. However, Mondas was in fact, a parasitic twin. Whenever Mondas drew close, Earth would be beset by calamity. The opposite, true of Mondas. This reached a crisis point, when the closest orbit coincided with a planetary alignment. The nature of Mondas, exponentially increased and the Earth itself began to die, as if its very lifeforce was being drained away. The three Great Nations - Mu, Lemuria and Atlantis - devised a desperate plan to save their world from extinction. Lemuria, directly below the orbiting planet, was at the epicentre of this cosmic lens. Millions were already dead. The lands of Lemuria, decayed and barren within hours..'

'Doctor? Where? How??'
'Pangaea. Earth Scientists correctly surmised their land masses were originally one super continent, home to their ancestors. However, this was not the only continent on primeval Earth. Merely one side of the fledgling world. Three other continents existed on the other side. All were gone before continental drift occurred. Look sharp! The pillar presentation isn't finished, my dear..'

'..The plan was agreed. All Lemurian knowledge was bestowed to Mu. A safeguard however, was left within those withered lands. A last keepsake from a dead race. Mondas drew nearer than ever. In spite of its vampiric nature, the Earth was being torn apart by the gravity of a second planet drawing so close to the atmosphere. Atlantis readied their greatest weapon. The ocean waters receded away from the lost, stricken land. The depths of desolation laid bare. It was only when the deepest level of Lemuria's blight was established. The malignant Earth was cleaved free and without tether, Lemuria was risen into the air. The Mu'on began to ply their own magics. Spatial dimensions began to twist and warp. The land of Lemuria, moulded like clay amid the maelstrom. The additional gravitational energy needed, supplied tangentially by the approach of Mondas itself. Lemuria took on a spherical nature. With the process complete, Atlantis plied their Aquamancy to its zenith. The water of planet Earth was channelled behind this sphere, this lunar mass. As a great geyser, it was propelled towards the twin aggressor. The shockwave of contact, signalled by a tumultuous blast wave. With that, it was over. Mondas orbit was broken and it began to drift away. Earth was saved! It even gained a new moon that day. Though it would take many centuries for its orbit to adjust to parallel the planet itself. Soon after, the deeds of the three great nations, were not to go unpunished. A great flood, resulting from the blast wave, would sweep the globe. Atlantis too, in time was lost. Pangaea, shattered and submerged for many seasons to come.'

The pillar display ended. The projections ceased and Diane, held a hand to her mouth agape. Tears in her eyes. 'How was I able to see and hear those records? How did you do it?'
The Doctor took her hand into his. While wiping away the tears with the other. With a sudden look of excitement he answered 'I found the problem!' Before he ran with her, unwittingly in tow. 'Wha, wait, what?! Doctor, slow down! They stood before another, smaller crystalline structure. A perfectly smooth, transparent dome, with a pitch black doorway at it's centre. The only adornment were three large glyphs at cardinal directions around the entrance. The green one on the right, had been opened in some way. A honeycomb structure of smaller cylinders was visible inside. 'Our lack of an audience, Ms Garrod. The answer was right here.' With a large grin, the Doctor was emphatically pointing towards the honeycomb with a finger from both arms. 'Something as simple as a blown fuse, well more or less. As soon as I could identify the problem, I just did my thing and fixed it. He proceeded to proudly jab his own arm from the accomplishment. 'The dust suggests this happened a while ago. I really hope the Mu'on have been okay the entire time.' Diane raised a hand and tried to get her excited companions attention.
'Doctor? Doctor?? Doctor!! Stop! Now, what's going on? How does replacing a small crystal rod solve the mystery of our elusive hosts?' Her hands firmly on her hips. Broadcasting her annoyance.
'Ohhh right! I did it again, didn't i?' He looked to the ground, avoiding her gaze and kicked a small pebble. 'Sorry. Well, you might have noticed nothing but the pillars and platforms around them, since we arrived. Plus, as you've already guessed we are inside Mount Everest. Well you see, the thing is, this is Mu.' Before she could form a response he pointed his sonic screwdriver towards the red glyph on the left of the door. The same prism technology activated, but on a far grander scale. A serpentine coil around the pillar behind them, and those visible in the distance, trailed an aura of light that seemed to dart upward without end. Then, in a dazzling diffusion of light, she saw it. The inner walls, lined with domed honeycombs. Only these were arranged as tiers of candles. All in defiance of gravity they stood. Diane felt the Doctor's arm fold around her shoulders. His face still beaming. 'They used their technology long ago, to fold away their home within a dimension of it's own. The continent of Mu became the mountain. The exterior in time, took on the appearance of its neighbours. Meanwhile within, the Mu'on continued their existence in peace and quiet. Guardians of the knowledge of the three lost nations. Do you forgive me for the gun, now?'

She was shaking from the ramifications of all of this. ' Y-y-yes. I do.'
'The same dimensional travel permits them to thrive within these surroundings. These doors correspond to a parallel settlement. You step through here, space and gravity shifts and you walk out over there, see!' He pointed to the largest tiered dome arrangement, high up on the western wall. 'That's the capital city. Now, let's go meet them, shall we?' With a casual air, he extended his arm and activated the green glyph with his sonic device one more time. They both waited with baited breath. The three glyphs shone. The black of the doorway seemed to swirl briefly and a tall figure slowly advanced. Instinctively, the Doctor barred his companion and edged her behind him. 'No... Not here' He uttered through gritted teeth.

A Silver Giant, stooped under the doorway and then, stood before them.

Chapter Three

>Journal entry: Two - Neil<

Neil is.. Neil, is?
For one thing, he's a funny one. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there has always been something odd about him? Aside from being a towering, gangly agoraphobic (I'm assuming) who keeps very odd hours and prefers to immerse himself in Knick knacks than people. He and the Doctor have been travelling together for several years prior to my joining them and they have a very strong bond. He told me he sought the Doctor out as a tutor, of sorts. This of course, led me to directly address the elephant in the room. What specialty is the Doctor trained in? Through our initial meeting and early adventures, I am positive that doctorate is in universal history. Yet he does also exhibit a high degree of scientific acumen. Although that might just be an educational standard of Gallifrey?
On that subject, after a few weeks together (I waited a little before asking, to not appear rude or nosey). Given his stature and intellect, I asked Neil where he was from? His answer was brief and vague. He said he was a Visitor. Stated in such a matter of fact way, that it was supposed to mean something significant to me? It didn't. But before I could probe further, the Doctor appeared and stated Neil's people were a nomadic spacefaring race. Neil himself had been born and raised onboard a star ship. I imagine this is also where the in-joke stems from. As the Doctor often refers to Neil in private moments as "star child". As for attire, he wears a similar jumpsuit to the officials of Callisto. Although his is a dark red, with some logo or emblem crudely etched out. One odd addition appears to be his eyewear. Be it either a visor or flight goggles. They are completely blacked out. My guess is a predisposition to light? As he only ever takes them off in his dimly lit quarters. To this day, I've never seen what his eyes look like. For all his mystery, Uncle. Perhaps more so than the Doctor himself. I've come to trust this man. You tell us to always follow our gut reactions and mine tells me, these two are worth my trust. Which as you well know, doesn't come easy.

Mu, City Nexus - 12th Century Earth

The Doctor noticed from the corner of his eye, Diane behind him. Began to gently rummage through her new bag. 'Don't!' He muttered quietly over his shoulder. Before they both turned back to face the Cyberman directly.
'Two years. Two Years since a sudden malfunction in the system disabled the warp gates. As the prism damage occurred on this side. I was unable to leave the city sooner. That all too familiar atonal metallic voice resounded. It remained stoic in front of the doorway, unmoving.
A Mondasian Cyberman, alright. The Doctor thought to himself. But at the same time, not. Mondas only advanced their cyber technology so far, before the planet was destroyed. This one sported advancements, to his chest unit and armament, that exceeded even the more advanced units of Telos, Cybus Industries and more, from the centuries to come. There was also some kind of shimmer across it's surface? This led to many uncomfortable questions forming in the Doctor's mind.
His hands clenched into fists at his sides, acknowledging the ramifications of the Cyberman's words. A Cyberman had been trapped with the people of Mu. The defenceless people of Mu. For two years! The silence upon their arrival, becoming even more chilling in hindsight.
'What have you done to the people? They harbour no weapons or technology of value to your kind. Nor would their home hold strategic value to you. They are of peace. They are..'
'Converted. Though not initially compatible, I was considering rending them all for spare parts. However, as sufficient time presented itself, I was able to resolve the problem.'
'WHAT!' The Doctor and his companion yelled in unison.
'Two hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants, all converted. They did not resist. When it became clear there was no escape. Observe!' With that, the Cyberman emitted two pulses from his head lamp. From every facet of the land that twisted around their heads, Diane and the Doctor stared in horror as a quarter of a million lights blinked back. An monstrous, artificial display of twinkling stars.
What horrors were these good people subjected to? What despair when they realised there was no hope of rescue?? The very proclamation designed to ensure their safety from the Time War, limiting how and when they can be reached. Spelled their doom with the arrival of a single invasive exotic. The Doctor felt a great swell of guilt at these thoughts, and more.
'Now, we can leave this place. My army and I can claim the Earth in this primitive age without opposition.' The Cyberman then sent a brief pulse from this headlamp again. The response this time was the distant, but distinct sound of marching. The Mu'on Cybermen were on the move.
The Doctor turned his gaze upward. Flung his arms into the air and cried out 'I'M SORRY!! I'm so very sorry.' The Cyberman quizzically tilted his head 'Your apology has no basis?'
'I'm not saying it to you. I'm talking to them!' He pointed up, to the distant marching. With the other hand, he pointed his screwdriver forward. Backing away, Diane seemed to stumble and fall to the floor, clutching her bag. The Cyberman was unfazed. 'Illogical. Your sonic device can cause no harm to a Cyberman.' He slowly began to advance.
'It's funny. Considering you are supposed to be an evolutionary leap for humankind, you aren't very bright, are you?' The Cyberman paused and suddenly looked behind him. As the Doctor turned on his screwdriver. 'Sonics don't really do much against complex machines. But, they can shatter crystal!' The still exposed crystalline panel of the doorway, shattered by the last syllable. The power of the doorway dispersed and fell silent. Forevermore. The marching too, ceased. 'I may not have been about to save the Mu'on. But their knowledge will now never leave this place to be used for evil.'
'My army?' The Cyberman queried. Still looking back towards the scattering pieces of the panel. Instantly spinning around with clenched fists, his head lamp fired a narrow beam of energy towards the Doctor. The sonic screwdriver exploded and he staggered back. Shielding his face. The closest a Cyberman could come to emotion. To anger. ' Their knowledge? You sound like you care for these people. While sealing them away, once more. As your own people previously did. I read the pillars when I arrived. Observing, it was your people who made them more than stone.'
'They were our first contact. Greeted us from across the vortex itself' The Doctor nursing minor burns on his left hand.
'So you studied then sealed away a threat? A logical response.'
'No! We didn't... We wouldn't... We tried to protect them from the Time War, from the Daleks!' He gave another glance upwards, into the gloom. Where he knew the Mu'on Cybermen still silently observed them. 'I suppose, we succeeded...' A sombre reflection cast over the Doctor's face. 'But at least you won't have them either!!' He spat back at the Mondasian.
'Incorrect. You may have cost me a legion, however, your known weakness was exploited to ensure the Cybermen still prevail.' The head lamp pulsed one more time.

'Exploiting what weakness?' The Doctor's curiosity was piqued.

'To keep you talking. Upload complete. Now I too, possess the entire database of Mu and Lemuria.' The Silver Giant began to advance. 'Though you are incompatible. When I eliminate you, I shall begin a new legion with your companion.' The Doctor dodged right, narrowly avoiding a sudden swing of the Cyberman's arm. Diane, suddenly in view of the Silver Giant, hadn't moved from sitting on the floor. One hand now in her bag.
'Conversion? I don't bloody think so!!' An energy beam burst from her bag and struck home with the chest unit. The light of the creature seemed to invert briefly and it sank to it's knees with a hideous, metallic scream. Head slumping to one side. The Doctor was speechless. Diane slowly rose, not taking her eyes off of her foe. The Doctor stood before her. His features stern once more. 'What. Was. That?' A chill down her neck seemed to follow those words.
'A present from Neil' With that, she removed her hand from her bag. Clutching a new weapon. The Doctor scowled in anger at what he beheld. A Dalek Gunstick. Retrofitted with an ornate handle and trigger. 'So you've gone from Kaled to full on DALEK!?!'
'Don't you dare lecture me for saving our lives! I lost my grandparents to those things! You don't beat them with words. You aim for the chest unit and fire with the strongest weapon you've got! Diane had the Doctor on the backfoot at this point. Poking his chest as she advanced. 'He hadn't even used his main gun on us yet' With a motion to the circular lens beneath the smoking chest plate. 'What would you have done then? On this platform, with no room to dodge the wide beam??' The Doctor was about to reply, when something caught his eye. The Cyberman's hand moved.
'Right! Well, Ms Garrod.' he said clapping his hands together to get Diane's attention. ' We need to go and find the ship our friend used to get here!' He started walking away. Confused, she began to follow.
'Why?'
'This city nexus is connected to the other pillars by symmetrical platforms and stairways. If we came from the north, lets try west - The language pillar. That's normally the main entry port.' She noticed he was a bit twitchy. She proceed to bar his path.
'Doctor! Why are we looking for it's ship??'
'Because he isn't dead, ok? I saw it move, so let's get a move on!' With that he began to walk past her.
'That's impossible! Dalek weaponry is fatal to Cybermen. That's true even centuries from now.' She raised a hand to her mouth and glanced backwards. The form hadn't risen from it's knees. yet.
'That's true and I don't have the answers. So we'll find his ship before he wakes up.' Diane raised the weapon still in her hand. 'Why don't I just hit it again to make sure, this time?' A look of hatred in her eyes.
'No!'
'No!? You're telling me not to kill this thing? Especially after all it has done within this mountain?'
'Precisely for that reason' He stopped and took her aside, hands on her shoulders. 'The knowledge this lone Cyberman possesses, can't be allowed to leave this land. However, to kill it is not enough. We discover how he got here. Disable it and leave in the Tardis. He will be sealed away in here for all time. Just like the Mu'on.' She nodded deference and they picked up the pace. They arrived at the language pillar five minutes later. The Doctor remained behind his companion by a small distance, glancing backwards frequently. Yet there was no pursuer.
From the pillar, Diane took a single scan. Before advancing up the identical stairs. She paused at the top, he having just reached the bottom. 'Doctor? I thought you said this was the 12th century?'
'I did and it is, Ms Garrod.'
'Then why is there a 20th Century prefabricated Garden Shed on the platform?' The Doctor slapped his own head at the sight. 'Of course!'
'Time Lord?'
'Time Lord. Who else but us, would even be aware of Mu's existence?' He began to circle the obvious Tardis. Diane aimed her gun back down the stairwell, expecting a sudden ambush. Nothing was there but them.
'So which among your people should we be expecting? The Monk? Master? Rani? Or our old friend, the War Chief? Her gaze not straying from the gun's custom sight.
'Bringing a Cyberman here only leads to one thing. Neither the Monk nor Rani would knowingly set out to commit genocide in this way. Both The Master and War Chief have had dealings with the Cybermen before. But, not with Mondas. Couple that with the nature of this variant. Things don't add up?' He continued to observe the unknown Tardis without advancing. Still gently massaging his left hand.
'I hope Neil is ok? Diane thought aloud. Now sitting on the top step as a sentry.
'Indeed. We have been gone a while. He should be perfectly safe as long as he stays in the Tardis.' He absent-mindedly pulled a fob watch from a pocket of his gilet. Not that a timepiece had real meaning this deep underground. 'Why would anyone bring a Cyberman here?'

'An excellent question, Doctor.'

The Doctor turned his head towards the voice very slowly. He was positive no one else was in the cave. There stood two men. Clad in robes of striped black and white. A memory came to the Doctor, from his second life, and he knew who they were. He dashed for the stairs. The sudden movement caused Diane to turn, as in one fluid motion, the Doctor picked her up in his arms and continued to thunder down the stairwell.
Diane couldn't see what was behind them, but the look on the Doctor's face alarmed her more than any threat. The look of fear. Terror. In all their adventures, she had never seen him so physically afraid before. Within moments they were back at the history pillar. A quick glance out from Diane, revealed the Cyberman was gone. The Doctor didn't seem to notice. She had been pleading with him to let her down, to tell her what's going on. But he didn't seem to hear her. Finally as he bounded up the last stair and the Tardis was in sight, only a tunnel away.
'Doctor! We need to slow down to use the keys! Doctor!' With that, while still carrying his companion, he raised his right arm and clicked his fingers.
The Tardis doors flew open. Much to the bemusement of Neil. Standing beside the control panel, in a bathrobe and goggles, with a steaming mug in his hand. Staring out, he saw his friends advancing at pace.

'NEIL! START THE TARDIS!!! The Doctor screamed.

Instinctively, Neil put his empty palm onto the controls and the engine burst into life. They were going to make it. The Doctor thought.
Back on the other platform, as one figure entered that Tardis. The second, looked at his fob watch, then back to the tunnel. 'That's far enough.' Pressing a button on the cover.

To Neil's eyes, the Doctor and Diane froze at the threshold. Suddenly dragged back where they came with tremendous force. 'Doctor!' He dropped the mug and ran for the door. He was barely outside, when a Silver Giant blindsided him with a blow to the back of the head. As the primed Tardis' doors closed and it began to fade away. The Cyberman effortlessly picked up the unconscious Neil, hoisted over his shoulder and began to walk back towards the tunnel.

Chapter One

Designation: P4X-639

'Jaffa, Kree!!!'
Another volley of Staff blasts keep the SG Team pinned behind the temporary cover of a collapsed stone pillar. 'Captain, the comms are down! We can't reach the Prometheus or any of our nearby allies.' Lieutenant Benson winces as a further blast shatters masonry directly above his head. A dust cloud cuts his sitrep short. 'Ma' am, they've cut us off from the shuttle and the Gate, too. The team of four huddle tight in the growing dusk.
'Damn Marauders! Just when I thought we were over our war with the Goa'uld!' The Captain screams over the cacophony of battle all around them. 'Like roaches. They just don't know when to quit!' She quickly spies over the cover. The Marauders, still unseen, and the Stargate standing so tantalisingly close. Before another blast flies from the gloom and almost decapitates her. ' I don't get it? This is a remote science outpost. Ancient tech or not. There is nothing here for these raiders to steal. The big machine doesn't even work...?'
'Orders, Captain?' She sees the desperation in their eyes, as all look to her. Their faces marred by smoke and dust.
'Jennings, we were here as security for the scientists. For the moment, we hold the only access door to the research facility. You and Benson, go check on them. Malus, ready that Zat, you're with me. We need to get to the Gate. SG Command has no idea what's going on here. Without backup, we're dead. SG-12, move out!'
Staring behind them, Jennings and Benson readied themselves to run for the sliding doors just a few clicks south. Likely suicidal, as the fallen pillar behind them was the only cover between their tactically positioned foes, and the door...

Meanwhile...

The Doctor opens his eyes to a cell. Lying on a cold metal floor. Both Neil and Diane were with him. A relief, and not entirely unexpected. Although on closer inspection, the cell itself certainly is. This, was clearly where it happened. The conversion chamber. Dried blood and other viscera sticks to corners of ominous looking machinery. This is where the Mu'on died. Diane and Neil did not stir. He quickly gets to his feet and approaches both. Checking for vitals. Alive, but unconscious. Further surprising is they still possess all their equipment. Including the custom Gunstick. The Doctor walks to the single egress. An intimidatingly large metallic door. Inspecting it closely, a tap reveals a thickness and sturdiness that makes brute force out of the question. No lock or handle on this side either. Naturally, for the former occupants, once inside, there was no escape. Clever, too. It would suggest that's why they were not disarmed. Also that this is a makeshift cell. Their captures didn't intend on acquiring prisoners, beyond the Mu'on. But who are they? No Time Lord from Gallifrey has a conversion chamber retrofitted into a Tardis. Not even The Master is that evil.

Satisfied that escape was not an immediate option. The Doctor walked over to Diane and slipped something into her bag, just as she was coming to. Rubbing her eyes and moving her grey hair away from her face. She awoke to the beaming face of her favourite Time Lord, amid strangely metallic surroundings. 'Doctor? ...Wha' Trying to steady herself. Diane struggled to stand. The Doctor lightly pressed his hand to her shoulder.
'Don't try to move too quickly, Ms Garrod. A Time Field can be disorientating on a biological and temporal level. As per your questions. We have been captured by two Time Lords and a Cyberman. Somehow in alliance. More on that later, I imagine? We are currently being held in a disused Cyberman conversion chamber. The door is sealed from this side. So for now, we are at the mercy of our captors. Typical Wednesday, really.' He shrugged and walked over to check on Neil. Diane's eyes were wide with the words "conversion chamber".

She lost her Grandfather to the Cyberman invasion of Callisto. All the able-bodied adults were led to the "factory", the central hanger bay of the moon, repurposed as a conversion centre. In return for their compliance, they were promised the safety of their families. Only Cybermen left that facility. One night, her "Grandfather" came back. For his disabled wife and Grandchild. If not for the intervention of her uncle Anthony, she dreads to ponder her fate.

She looked around and started to take in the clear signs of body horror around. Lamenting the loss to history of the Mu'on.

Neil was in a little worse shape than Diane. Seated now, but hunched over limply. The Doctor observed the savage welt on the back of his neck. His shell had been cleaved open and his exposed reptilian skin, bruised and bleeding. Neil held up a hand at the sudden attention. 'Mustn't grumble eh? Doctor. No need to fuss over me. I've been through worse. I have some glue in one of these pockets for the shell. When no longer exposed to the air, my skin will heal a lot faster. Still wearing his goggles, his eyes imperceptible, Neil did unconsciously shake his head from time to time.
'You're still concussed, my boy. Don't try to exert yourself. Feign sleep, Diane and I will await what comes next.' The Doctor raised the collar on Neil's jumpsuit, so as to obscure his wound from the unwanted attentions of Diane. Neil briefly grasped his hand and weakly smiled. His grip lacked the usual strength the Time Lord expected. He realised this was the first time he ever saw his ward as remotely vulnerable. A Starchild isn't as invincible as Neil boasts.

The Doctor heard approaching footsteps and quickly stood next to Diane. Waving Neil to lay back down. 'Before we meet our new friends, Diane. I've left something in your bag to help the two of you to safety. When I give the word, use it exactly one hour later. Understand?
'Doctor, they're coming. What is the word?
'Ah.. Pickles? Yes, pickles!
'Pickles?! Really???' An eyebrow raised. Diane now unsure if this was one of the Doctor's typically wry jokes. The door, unlatched from outside, swung open effortlessly. The Cyberman once more stood before them. A brief scan of the room and the Mondasian discounted Neil. Focusing on the two standing prisoners. 'You will proceed.' One arm motioned them into the hall beyond the doorway. 'Admiring your handiwork, are you?' Diane sneered as she passed it, pointing at the machines in the room.
'They served a purpose. As will you.' The Doctor remained silent at the ominous implication of those last words. His brow furrowed. Behind them, the door was again closed and bolted. 'Your companion will come to no harm. It has been agreed.' Pointing onwards towards Diane and the Doctor, paused, with anxious expressions towards the cell.

'Can't keep our host waiting, come along my dear.' Cutting through the tension, the Doctor took her hand into his and proceeded to march down the hallway. The Doctor knew the way. Beyond the conversation chamber, the exterior décor matched that of a standard Tardis. Mirroring his own, many lives ago. The main console room was their clear destination. The Cyberman followed in absolute silence. Never more than two steps behind them. Three left turning hallways later and they reached the familiar double doors. Roundels covered them and the greater walls. Evoking memories of earlier days for the Time Lord. Brushing his free hand against them, staring in awe with an enormous grin. 'She is beautiful. An antique. Older than mine, I imagine.' He looked to his companions for similar reverence. As for Diane, her gaze was too fixated on the Cyberman to appreciate her surroundings. The Cyberman, a wall of indifference.

Philistines.

The doors parted inwardly, with that familiar hum. The two officially dressed Time Lords from the docking platform, stood by the central console. Turning to greet their guests. Both faces completely unknown to the Doctor. Which, given their uniforms, was troubling.
'Considerably older than yours, Doctor.' As the Time Lord on the left began to speak, the Doctor noted a deference to him, in the body language of both the Cyberman and the other robed figure. This would be the one in charge. 'My Tardis has a ..unique pedigree.'

'So... what brought The Jury into contact with Mondas?' Casting a thumb behind him at their Silver escort. 'In what, I'm guessing, is a pre-Time War Tardis. Possibly a Mark 2? No. Yes. No. That can't be right? They were discontinued while I was still at the academy. Which would date this immaculate piece of history at, at least a thousand years old?!?' Perplexed, the Doctor walked from one instrument to the other. Rotating dials and observing screens. His three host's eyes locked on everything he did and touched. Diane grew nervous as they still were unshackled or restrained in any way. As if neither presented the hint of threat. 'Doctor! Doctor!!' She hissed through clenched teeth. Whatever these people had instore for them. She felt safer simply having the Doctor within reach. He was busying himself, like a child on a field trip. She wasn't reassured by the ill-timing of one of his "distracted" episodes. 'DOCTOR!!!' The right hand Time Lord turned towards her, with the outburst. She gasped as the sclera of his eyes appeared to shine a brilliant white. She lowered her gaze and he smirked at the response.

The Doctor paused and was suddenly back in the present. Spinning on one heel before rejoining the side of his companion, with a bounding hop. 'Is there a Jury warrant I can look up? Or do I have to wait for us to reach Gallifrey for answers to my questions?' The robed both laughed at the name drop.

'My boy, I haven't been to Gallifrey in several lifetimes. That is also, not our destination. Which, you already surmised from your innocuous probing of the instruments. The leader spoke once more. His ally left the room quietly. Observing Diane the entire time. The Cyberman remained in place, barring the entrance they had used. Opposite them, on the far left, the instantly recognisable Tardis main doors. Sealed, as they were in flight. 'Leaving us now, is Brother Rueben. You are already familiar with Brother Enoch. The Doctor gave a brief wink and wave to the Cyberman, at the introduction. The response was as stoic and silent as ever.
'And you, the charismatic leader of this.. "brotherhood"?'
'You already know who I am, Doctor.'
'No member of The Jury I've ever seen, I'm afraid. I must have missed you at the last Borusa gala.' The Doctor was distracted by a click in his hands. His puzzle had reached the next level. He couldn't remember when he had removed it from his coat? He slid it back inside an inner pocket and raised an eyebrow to his host. 'So if we haven't met before, how do I know you?'
'At the academy, you were greatly invested in my legend. You've always been interested in mystery boxes.' At the moment, it all clicked. The pristine robes, without rank. The Tardis of exception age. Faces of Time Lords that he has never seen within the Capitol before.
'It can't be...?!'
'Oh but it is. In another life. In another time. Those of Gallifrey knew me as.. The Other. A pleasure to meet a fan.'

Part 2 - Gods cannot be killed

Chapter Two

Designation: P4X-639

Sargent Jennings and Lieutenant Benson were horrified by the scene before them. The walls of the research facility were scorched and pot marked with staff blasts. Big ones. The lights were out and, P-90's raised, every room they investigated mirrored that chaos. The dead scientists were mostly draped over their work stations. Shot in the back with little time to even acknowledge the threat. 'Cowards!' checking the pulse of the last dead scientist, Jennings was enraged at the callous nature of each kill. Like their murders were inconsequential.
'They've been clearing every room. Much like we're doing now, Jennings. Whoever is down here, didn't come for the scientists. Just needed the witnesses out of the way.'
At the end of the facility, they approached the last double doors that denoted the main attraction of this outpost.
Many years ago, SG-1 encountered an Ancient device. A time travel machine, no less. Yet, in spite of their great advancement, even the Ancients couldn't control time. Upon completion of that mission, a permanent research station was installed and built over the ruins.
They silently approached, weapons hot. Jennings motioned to Benson, as they parted to access the dual entry controls on either side of the door. A violent blast wave of force shot through the doors. Sending both soldiers flying through the air. A lone figure stood in the exposed doorway. Sclera flaring, as a ribboned left hand lowered. A strap over that shoulder, connected to a large staff cannon, held in the right hand. In that moment, Sgt Jennings, knocked out cold after slamming into a wall. Never saw his friend's killer. Or his own. The figure returned to the room and proceeded down a ladder. Recently built behind the Ancient dais.

Another Time and Place...

'The Other!?! You've got to be joking?'
'Come now, Doctor. You, who have seen so much that this reality has to offer. Find one name too incredulous?' The very thought amused the ancient Time Lord.
' I studied every scrap of information on The Other for years. Vague name drops and obscure references were all that the entire database of Gallifrey could give me. Eventually I took the name as nothing more than folklore, myth, fiction!'
'Failed insurrections will do that. Rassilon made sure I was expunged from the annals of our race in every meaningful way.'
At this point, Diane noticed those talking in the room seemed to forget she was even there. Turning to observe this "Other", he immediately reciprocated that gaze. 'You see child, your Doctor was so enamoured with uncovering the secret of me. This obsession led his Academy friends to begin circulating a rumour that he was in fact, The Other. It has persisted in some circles, to this day.

'Now how would you know that. You said you haven't been to Gallifrey in several lifetimes? I've certainly never seen you there.'
'Quite, Doctor. But I still have some eyes on Gallifrey, in spite of Rassilon. I was there at the beginning, after all. Any time my former name was acknowledged or researched. A little tracker was added and relayed to me. Can't be too careful, names have power.'
'Sorry to interrupt this chat, but you said this "Other" was your former name. What is your name now?' Diane enquired, forcing herself into the conversation. The Doctor demurely returned to her side. In his excitement, he had half-forgotten she was even there.
'He called me daemon. Over time, I took a liking to the name. In the beginning stood, Rassilon, Omega and myself. Nothing was beyond our grasp. At the end, Omega was lost to his own folly. In our final conflict, enraged, Rassilon called me a daemon. Blighted my former name, and I was cast into the Eye of Harmony. Ironic, as it was I who gifted it to him in the first place. Well, the understanding to temper it and harness it's secrets.'
'Why were you so utterly expelled?
A door quietly opened at the far end of the room.
'Ah, Brother Reuben has returned. Come now, Doctor. This way and I'll show you. Your pet can stay here and Brother Enoch shall fetch the boy, too.'
'EXCUSE ME!? My name is Diane Garrod, of Callisto. I may not be some high and mighty Time Lord, but I am 56 years old and refuse to be spoken to as though some.. some plaything!'
Diane stood scowling, face to face with the Daemon. The Doctor was suddenly held by the shoulders in a vice grip by Enoch. 'Child. I know exactly what. you. are.' The Daemon leaned in to her ear and whispered. The Doctor failed to hear the words, but saw her face contort in sudden fury, and she struck the Daemon hard across the face. In an instant, he pinned her against the wall with his right forearm. Upon his left hand was a metal gauntlet, his timepiece attached, slid to the palm of his hand. All at once, a stiletto blade also popped from a slot in the wrist.
'NO!!'
The Doctor panicked and struggled in vain to free himself from the Cyberman. But it was too late. Without another word, the Daemon sunk the blade into the writhing woman's heart. Her face one of shock and pain. He lowered his forearm and her body begun to sag. He then held her up by her jaw. Staring intently into her flailing eyes.
'Yes, that's it. No, no don't look away now. I want to see it. I want you to feel it.'
Her eyes slowed and began to dilate. The moment of death was upon her.
'There. That's far enough.
He pressed a button on his time piece and the moments events began to reset. The wound on Diane's chest and welt on Daemon's cheek rescinded. He released his grip and she collapsed back against the wall. Using an elbow to steady herself. Enoch withdrew and the Doctor was allowed to re-join and comfort her. The Daemon turned his back on the pair. The tension in the air receded and he resumed his attention on the control panel.
'That, child. That feeling, is the realisation of death. A deep rooted fear for all sentient life. Now, you have experienced the very edge of death. Do you think you will ever forget it?'
'..No.'
'While within my presence, you are enveloped within my personal time field. Any further hostility from you. I will replay the scene for you, over and over again. Do you understand your place now, child?'
'...Yes.'
'Good. Now, Reuben. Bring the other one in.'
Reuben emerged fully from the open door. Holding an arm of Neil tightly behind him. The Doctor's ward looked no healthier than before. He shoved Neil forward, into the room, with a cruel grin. He staggered and fell at the base of the control panel.
'Thank you, Reuben. Well then, Doctor. If you'll follow m..'
'I think not. You've kidnapped me. Brutalised and traumatised my companions. Now seek some kind of compliance?' He subtly drew Diane's hand to hold an embedded power cable. 'I have only one thing to say to you..' This boldness drew confusion from all three of the Brotherhood.
'Pickles!'
With that, Neil sat bolt upright and pressed his palm onto the control panel. The entire Tardis came to an immediate stop and all standing were hurtled into the air. Neil appeared beside Diane, unaffected on the floor. Helped her to her feet and the two ran for the now open outer door. When they were nearly clear, they looked back and saw the Doctor running behind them. They had crossed the threshold and fell several metres into snow. They looked up and there was the Doctor. For an instant, before he seemed sucked back into the Tardis. The door slammed closed and it dematerialised in front of them.

Now the two were alone. They held each other, as a bitter breeze coursed around them. 'Wha? Where are we??' Diane spoke meekly. Neil tapped her shoulder, she looked across an otherwise desolate, arctic landscape and saw a concrete bunker. With a crudely graffitied Tardis drawn on the doors. 'Safe, I believe.'
Meanwhile, back on the Daemon's Tardis, Enoch held the Doctor aloft by the throat.
'I believe he gets the point now, Enoch. Release him.'
'Acknowledged.' The Doctor hit the ground with a thud and let out a small chuckle.
'I have always had plans in place, should my companions be in danger. I think you'll find your leverage has just flown the coop, Brother Daemon. If you know me at all, you'll know now I won't help or assist you in any capacity.' The Doctor defiantly stood up and dusted the sleeves of his jacket.
The Daemon shook his head. 'They were collateral to your capture, Doctor. Not the leverage. That, would be over there.' He pointed to a roundel next to the door Reuben had emerged from. It changed to a vid screen and the Doctor drew close. A chill ran down his spine as he saw a large circular chamber, filled with every companion he had ever known. Rhythmically dancing, encircling a Gallifreyan symbol on the floor. It appeared to be glowing, through their efforts.
'Now, Doctor. Let us discuss why you are here...'

Chapter Three

Designation: P4X-639

'My Lord...'
'Beautiful, is it not?' The First Prime approached her master. Observing at the centre of the chamber, a glowing blue orb of pulsing light. ' Carefully excavated by the Tau'ri. This is the temporal power source of the Ancient Device. Held in place by the rings, aloft and below. Yet it emits no radiation or harmful effects. Therefore no further protective field was needed. This is what we seek. Report?'
'Three of the Tau'ri are dead. Their leader, slain by the explosive trap within their Chappa'ai reconnaissance machine. No distress call was made. My other warriors are closing in on their last member. Who we have confirmed to be Malus ...the Tok'ra. As you predicted, my lord.'
'Yes, they have forged closer ties to their allies. Which is why this power is so important. My race is all but lost. Your band of followers are labelled Shol'va by your own people.' The Marauders bore no Goa'uld Marks on their foreheads. In contrast, a band of gold is tattooed horizontally across their eyes. Their own emblem. That they see nothing but the old ways. This made them outcast to the emerging Jaffa society and in turn, the first true enemy of the now, free people. 'Time is the answer. The machine above is useless. But with the innate Tollan knowledge my host possessed. Alongside my own. Perhaps this Ancient technology too, will be mine to wield. As with the Chappa'ai and so much else. ' With that, the Goa'uld reached out and pressed his palm against the surprisingly viscose core, floating before him.
At the moment, far above. Malus hit the gate hard. Winded by a stray staff blast to his side. The volleys ceased. The Tok'ra knew the Marauders were advancing, for the kill. He had been sent specifically with SG-12, as with a handful of other carefully selected Tok'ra. To unearth the secret identity of the Goa'uld who had supplied the Marauders with their weapons. He now knew. The MALP had been rigged to explode. The Captain didn't stand a chance. Now, on the wrong side of the DHD, the secret would die with him. He wondered how SG-1 would react to the face of long lost Narim? Knowing what he had likely endured as a Host for all these years??
'Tok'ra, Kree!'
Hunched against the gate, Malus limply turned his head left, to face the call. The Marauders, gold banded eyes glowering with the rising sun. They stood adorned in a distinctly mismatched set of various armours. Eagle, Snake, Wolf etc Battlefield scavengers personified. They held their staffs aloft. Pointed at him, ready to fire. His sclera flared at them, in defiance.
'You are near death. We control the Chappa'ai and your Tau'ri are dead.'
'I know. Drawing you in ...I was merely buying time. If there is one thing your kind should remember of mine... It.. is our capacity for sacrifice. No ..Goa'uld.. Shall. Ever. Wield. Time!' With that, Malus quickly entered a three key code onto a device on his wrist. He was slain by multiple staff blasts soon after. Within moments, the others would perish by a Naquadria bomb. Secreted behind the Ancient power source. Through his touch, the Goa'uld began to be enveloped by some kind of fluid energy. A great flash occurred and he saw no more.

Elsewhere and Elsewhen...

They danced.
An infernal dance.
None knew how long they had been moving, nor why they couldn't stop? Jamie McCrimmon was one of the first to become ..aware? As he danced, his eye was soon caught by others. They seemed to recognise him. Some wee lasses and a shorter man. Though they all continued to dance, their eyes brightened at the sight of him. As if he symbolised some kind of hope? His vacant response, was not the encouragement they hoped for. Their gazes felt as if they knew him? This seemed to grant him a clarity of his surroundings some didn't seem to share. Strange...

'What!? How!? When???'
'The gaze of a Time Lord is far and wide, of course. Even those that have departed your company are forever under your protection, eh good Doctor?' The wizened features of the ancient Time Lord cruelly twisted, briefly, into a smile.
'I still see them, when I close my eyes. They are safe. How are they here?' The Doctor had one hand pressed against the screen. Tears formed in his eyes, at the sight of some friends long since passed.
'I came to them, all your human friends, in their dreams. I offered them all the same thing. In return for their compliance. You.'
'You offered them the chance to travel with me, once more?'
'No. To travel with Their Doctor, once more.' Daemon continued with his back to the Doctor. His hands traced to and fro over the control panel. Reuben and Enoch busied themselves on the other side of the console. Both ceased paying the Doctor any attention. 'I was expelled for the experiments I performed. The Eye of Harmony granted us virtual immortality. But left natural, Time Lord reproduction... challenging. Rassilon and Omega sought out external means of procreation. I ..had other ideas.'

'Will you ..release them, if I help you?' His voice, pleading. As he couldn't look away from the screen.
'No. They are not prisoners. The offer I made each of them, was never against their will. When they have finished their task, they will be released.' The Doctor rubbed his eyes and looked back to his captors. 'What happens now?'
'The Divide.'
'WHAT!?! That. Was. YOU??? Madness and heresy to our entire race!
'Rassilon's edict worked too well, it seems.' The Doctor walked over and pulled the Daemon away from his controls, to look squarely into his eyes. Cold, dead eyes. The Doctor noted.
'Stop, now! It doesn't work. It never did! Even The Rani gave up on it and she is the one of the premiere scientific minds on Gallifrey.' The Daemon casually swatted away the Doctor's hand and readjusted his collar. 'In all these centuries, since my banishment. I made it work. My initial trials.. were flawed. Failures. But I ultimately learned I needed three things. From the past, present and future. Enormous quantities of Regenerative energy, You and, the end of our line. I have made successful trials. He motioned to Enoch and Reuben. ' But to begin wholesale repopulation. You will be my first. Affirmation will be my reward. Yours, will be to walk into the sunset will all those you held dear, and they with you.'
The Doctor fully understood his situation. As well as the true nature of the "Brotherhood". They were all the same being. Proof that, small scale, he had made The Divide work. But why are those two so different? Reuben also appeared to be more than he seemed. The Doctor couldn't quite put his finger on why...?

The Time Vortex, a time implacable...

Survival.
That was all that mattered. He drifted aimlessly. Power surged around him. Vast and immaterial. He was nothing more than dissolving pieces now. Spiralling into oblivion.
Death was close.
His hand (it felt like the host only had one left?) then collided with something. Something solid? Some kind of beacon? He no longer had eyes to see. However, he thought he heard a door open. Felt being enveloped by some environmental shield and, at last, a presence observing him from below. Forcing the jaw open, the symbiote seized it's chance and leapt at the unknown figure. Not unknown, it's new host! Able to see with it's own eyes, the symbiote observed the figure raised a gloved hand. Suddenly it was frozen in place. Safe from the maelstrom of the ether. But unable to move...
'What a curious creature? Some kind of parasite, perhaps??' The Daemon observed some kind of snake within the time field of his gauntlet. He turned to look back at the body it had emerged from. The fingers had faded and it began to drift back into the Time Vortex. Some kind of recognition became apparent on it's face too. As alongside the dissolution, the face contorted into a silent scream of agony. Until it left the Capsule field altogether and was swept from view. The Daemon returned his observations to the creature. 'Yet, I sense a great intelligence in you. Perhaps a host is required to actualise it? This would explain our friend's tortured expression when you left him?? Well. Both you and I are in luck, my unusual friend.' The Goa'uld didn't know where it was. But it sensed safety. Revenge on it's enemies would come later...

Now..

Rueben finished his work on the control panel. 'This is all the necessary instructions. You are sure you can maintain a connection from this distance, Brother Enoch?' The Goa'uld marvelled at this "Cyberman" technology. Such augmentation could benefit his own cause greatly. As would their obedience.
'Acknowledged. The Doctor's Tardis is currently unreachable, when inflight. When it materialises back on the physical plane. My control will return.'
'Daemon was lucky to escape with the location. To further the plan, we will need access. Luckily, that hapless fool sent his machine to rescue his companions.'
'As calculated. Wherein Gallifreyan life is endangered through the journey. Humanoids such as they are more disposable. The reptilian should be able to complete the task at hand.'

They discussed on. As the vid screen viewed the laboratory. The Daemon strapping the Doctor down into a chair. Attached to various other machines.
'One lone Time Lord, can live unhindered for hundreds of years. The First Life, brimming with the most energy. This can outlive the others. Each regeneration draws from that pool to attain "immortality". As Rassilon called it. Within safe limits, Twelve lives were theorised to be achievable. Beyond was ..dangerous to predict.
I conceived The Divide. If your first life possesses all the power to manifest the rest. What if we could divide that being into twelve. Who in turn, could be replicated or regenerate into twelve lives of their own. Again, again and again! Our most powerful life would live on forever. That is true immortality. It took one hundred dead volunteers, including his own daughter, for Rassilon to assail me. If their minds hadn't shattered from the process, it would have worked!
I would have found the solution ..in time. I tried at that point, to overthrow him. But failed. Which brings us to now. Now Doctor, through you. I will be vindicated.'

When he was confident that the Doctor was securely bound to the machine. The Daemon leaned in close. Whispering in his ear. 'My dream, the ultimate revenge against Rassilon. To live on. My brothers, provided me with inspiration. I will disseminate a myriad of myself across time and space itself. A thousand eyes, across all reality. The Other will be reborn across dimensions. To shape it all, from the shadows. I have you to thank for that ...Good Doctor.'

The Doctor, now immobile. Could do nothing more than wildly cast his eyes in every direction. A wicked looking mechanical arm slowly lowered. Attached was what looked like a green, multifaceted crystal. It began to shimmer and the Doctor began to cry out in pain, unimaginable. Screaming louder than at any point in his entire lifespan...

"I never forget a face."
"I know you don’t. And in years to come, you might find yourself revisiting a few. But just the old favourites, eh?"

This quote. Coupled with the chosen face of the 12th Doctor, gave me inspiration to write this story. The Curator's words got me thinking. Perhaps 'old favourites' doesn't just apply to former faces of The Doctor? But faces of friends and allies from his journey.

If one Doctor felt compelled to devote a regeneration to a specific mission, what face would best exemplify that conviction?

The Brigadier. The face of a steadfast soldier would be the one the Doctor would identify with dedication to a goal. Another reason I decided on this face, was to largely remove contemporary Earth as a setting. His appearance after all, would be problematic within the 20th/early 21st Century.

This story with The Daemon takes place at a turning point in this regeneration. There were other adventures before. As alluded to with the "Hit List", but those plans come to a screeching halt here. What's past is prologue and all that.

As with Neil, Brother Reuben and the Doctor's apparel. I toyed with what other sci-fi/fantasy universes could be integrated into adventures across time and space. Old favourites, again. The following chapter is the conclusion of this story. That was all I wrote. Subsequently, I recently began to jot down some ideas for "Adventure 2" (exciting name, I know). Utilizing some of my OG characters that didn't get incorporated into other stories. I don't know if I'll post it or not. Time will tell...

Part 3 - The Daemons' Master Plan

Chapter One

A time before...

'Sam! We need him now!!!'
'I can't ma'am. I'm sorry. It.. doesn't work that way.'

The ferocity of the preceding slap resounded across the Tardis control room. The assorted refugees all flinched from the echo of the strike. The doors began to crack and shudder, with tremendous force. Their attention returned to the immediate threat outside. Their pursuers had found them again. The group began to hold each other and weep.
As Sam delicately rubbed his reddening cheek. His assailant violently turned his head to face the evacuees. 'Look at them!' He couldn't meet any of them in the eye.
'The Dalek death machine will break through those doors any minute. It will kill us all! We need the Doctor! The only being in creation that the monsters of Skarro fear. YOU can't help us. They know that now. Which is why they are coming. So give the Doctor back before it is too late!'
Alice continues to shake Sam by the lapel with every word. Her streaming, pleading eyes a mixture of rage and fear.

However, for Dr. Sam Beckett. Today was a day unlike any other. Today he awoke, a stranger in the strangest land. With two hearts! Never more so in all his journey across time and space, has he felt more aware of being in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

The outer doors of the Tardis begin to crumble from a central point. Screams rise within. As tentacles brace the opening and a vast yellow eye comes into view. With both curiosity and fear, Sam focuses upon it. As Alice scrambles to calm the Daleks former prisoners. He marvels at how utterly alien it is. Meanwhile when it's gaze comes to rest upon him. He senses absolute malice and hatred. It seems to disregard him immediately however. Following it's sightline, Sam finds the refugees. The eye dilates and begins to glow white. Without another word, Sam lunges. Shoving Alice aside, through a doorway and dives in front of the captives. Barring them from hostile sight and closes his eyes. Some form of energy hits him and it hurts. A greater pain than he thought possible. He briefly looks over his shoulder. They are all shocked into silence. But otherwise unharmed. He suddenly hears a British voice in his head, calling him a "good lad". He softly smiles ..until the energy hits him again.
Seemingly every atom of his being burns in agony. Yet he grits his teeth and does not yield his position. He stands tall.
The creature takes aim one more time.
'Time to end this, lad.'
That voice again. While very reassuring, Sam then starts to feel funny. Like his body is steaming. He opens his eyes to marvel as trails of light effervesce from his exposed flesh.
'Use it. On that thing!'
He understands. Pointing his outstretched arms forward. This leads to a tingling sensation rushing towards his fingertips. The eye pauses it's attack and flares in alarm. Daleks are all too familiar with Time Lord biology. But these energy readings are too big. The energy signature doesn't match that of Regeneration either. A quantum element, the death machine can't identify. This would be the last thing it sees.
'Bang!'
Sam's triumphant retort as a tremendous flash of light blinds all temporarily. As sight returns, pieces of the creature dislodge from the door and fly off into the Time Vortex.
Alice Klieg cheers among the refugees and looks towards the Doctor. A younger man with cropped hair and ill-fitting clothes turns to confront her.
An empowered regeneration unlike any other. What became of Sam is unknown. However, maybe this boost worked both ways? Perhaps the lone traveller was finally able to reach the home he sought??

Now

It took a while.
Eyes were slow to focus. Feeling very woozy? I remember ..a machine. A green light and pain. Pain unbound. I cried out with every voice I've ever had.
Now I smell ..smoke? My vision is starting to focus. I can make out sparks and flames amidst the smoke. The room. The laboratory. All but destroyed. I take hold of my head, in my hands. Trying to steady my frayed senses. My sudden movement doesn't go unnoticed.

A silhouette advances upon me. Him. The Daemon. With one hand he lifts me into the air by my gilet. His prior pristine appearance marred now by our surroundings. Clearly he has been battling the blaze that engulfed us.
'WHAT.HAVE.YOU.DONE!?'
His voice, booming yet shrill. Hoarse to my ears. His eyes filled with wrath and a glimmer of mania.
'YOU. YOU OVERLOADED MY SYSTEMS!!!'
'YOU OVERLOADED MY SYSTEMS!?!'
'You ..overloaded, my systems???'
He was utterly incredulous. I writhed against his grasp the entire time. Which was like iron. How could he be this strong? Rassilon nor Omega, matched this level of physicality. No wonder Rueben and Enoch deferred to this one, without question. Prime Daemon or not.
Still rambling the same sentence over and over, I slowly felt my own voice begin to return. Yet he seemed to forget he still held me aloft. As he began pacing to and fro. I just jiggled with every movement, like a child's doll.
Then I must have caught the corner of his eye and he seemed to recompose himself. A little.
'No Time Lord has ever possessed that much raw power! So much raw ..power. The emphasis on those last words, sparked a smirk that I did not like. He proceeded to drag me through a different set of doors to our entrance. We paused and stood at the threshold. Beyond, was no room at all. But a pitch black square. A pit of darkness into depths unknown.

'So much raw power.' He repeated. Staring into that void.
'It seems I misjudged your worth, Doctor. Until I can fix and ..recalibrate my machines' He hoisted the arm holding me over the pit. 'You can keep our guest company.'
'Wait! I need to know one thing! He paused and cocked his head.
'Why a garden shed?'
He scoffed.'Without a Chameleon circuit. You would have never approached my Capsule. Your weaknesses are legendary.' With that, he opened his hand and I fell into shadow.
At least, I saved Neil and Diane.

I awoke again. On my back this time. Greeted by a cold, metal floor. Staring up into the void. Considering the view from above. I sat up and regained my bearings. Within a bright and airy lounge? A Mu'on prism hovers at the centre of the ceiling. Just below the field of shadow. I place a hand down causally and almost knock a glass beside me. Containing orange juice?
'I thought you might be thirsty. Also, good to see you're awake.'
I follow the voice to the back of a high wingback leather chair. Surrounded by several large bookcases. Filled with Gallifreyan tomes. The voice was strange, but not hostile.
'You dropped this on the way down' An object flies over the chair and I catch it with ease. My puzzle box greets my open hands.
'Thank you. I'm the Doctor, and you are?'
'I know you. Not the usual company you keep, eh?' An outstretched finger motions above.
'Oh, absolutely not. My usual companions are a fair bit more hospitable.' Surveying the room, I lament these surroundings. Whoever this "guest" is. No one deserves a dimensional prison. 'A lot more hospitable.'
Feeling more stable on my feet. I approach the armchair. My approach leads to an unseen hand snapping a book shut. Placing it on a small table to the left. In one fluid motion, a pair of legs in a tan jumpsuit, swing over the arm of the chair. The momentum bringing their attached body into view. My cellmate. A slight, frail young form with a large smile, turns to greet me.
'Hello Doctor! It is an honour to meet you.' Two soft hands extend and envelope one of my own.
'I'm the Last Life of Gallifrey. Would you like some more juice?'

Rueben observes the exchange from a monitor room. Uneasy at this pairing. The Doctor is an infamous instigator of trouble. The Last Life is an innocent being of terrible power. Together, even the plans of the Daemon could be undone. This universe made his technology difficult to reproduce. Though not impossible. He just had to be selective with his toys and creative with alternate power sources. Upon their first encounter at Mu. Reuben desired a Staff to blast the Doctor on instinct. The Goa'uld haven't survived this long by not trusting those kind of reactions. The Daemon stayed his hand, however. He usually does.

Alongside the generous gift of a Time Lord host. The parasite was promised something greater for his continued compliance. A Capsule of his own. Reuben since determined this universe was too volatile to attempt personal conquest. Especially without Jaffa or Naquadah. But the Daemon offer him the chance to return home. Reuben relished the idea of his return. Possessing such incredible knowledge and a device to travel time and space. He would be invincible. The rest would be his slaves. For all time.

His role in this bargain had been a simple one. The capture of The Last Life. Hailing from the end of time. The Daemon desired to study the final evolution of Gallifreyan DNA. But could not persuade this being to abandon their post, nor final mission. To activate the Big Bang. Ending this reality and starting the next.
For all his cleverness. The Daemon and Enoch, by extension, were known quantities. A Time Lord and a Cyberman, no matter their pedigree. Proved unable to surprise or ensnare their ultimate descendant. Versed in every documented encounter of their existence. Yet I, a Goa'uld, was not of this universe. When I returned to Daemon's Capsule. The prisoner over my shoulder. I expected treachery. Yet found none. The Daemon instead, was ecstatic.
The Last Life, a prisoner ever since. The regeneration of the universe. Halted, for now.

'So that's the game is it?'
'Afraid so, good Doctor. The Daemon will keep me here until his machine is perfected. Also since my mission will annihilate the end of time. His final staging area would be destroyed too. Which can't be allowed until his plan succeeds.'
'But that means ..The Crown of Rassilon!'
My Cellmate nods in agreement. 'Much like capturing me. The closest known gateway to the Crown was deemed too dangerous to be accessed by a Time Lord, Cyberman and, whatever Brother Reuben is. Daemon needed another third party. One easy to goad. Possessing a Capsule containing the right coordinates.'
'My Tardis. That I sent to retrieve Neil and Diane.'
'Your Tardis. Your companions. Will not be on their way here to rescue you, I'm afraid. In fact, you will never see one of them again.' A glance between us, indicated a brief exchange of future insight.'To gain access to the right temporal coordinates. Your friends will be landing at the heart of Skarro. Squarely within the era of the Dalek's complete dominion over the planet'

The wall to my left briefly trembles and a shockwave blasts me from my feet. I hit the opposite wall head first and begin to pass out. Brother Reuben appears to phase through the left wall. Holding a gloved hand aloft.
'This chit chat is over.'
'Ah, Brother Reuben. Hello. Would you like some juice?'

My consciousness fails me again and I pray for the safety of my companions, as I never have before.

Part 3 - The Daemons' Master Plan

Chapter Two

In the 25th century, Anthony 'Buck' Rogers saved the Earth from great peril! The threat now over, and without the means to return to his own time. A custom rocket ship was bestowed upon him in gratitude. Alongside companions Barney, his best friend and a former space pirate. The artificial lifeforms Dr Theo and Twiki. He set his sights upon exploring the stars, beyond the Solar System. Weeks into their voyage. A system anomaly forced them to seek refuge to repair the engines. Fortune seemed to favour the group. As the sensors detected the nearby peaceful moon of Callisto...

The air started to stir with that all too familiar engine whirr. Neil and Diane both beamed at each other as the Tardis emerged into the bunker. Holding Diane's phone, Neil marvelled at the Doctor's ingenuity. The Tardis had seemingly phased out of reality. Yet since it was unmanned. It had basically taken a stationary orbit within the Time Vortex.
In the event of such separation, the Doctor had programmed a failsafe. A Gallifreyan distress beacon that would recall the Tardis to any given location. The signal he had entered into Diane's phone before their captor arrived. Now the machine had arrived for them. Neil felt hope. Hope to save the Doctor and escape this "brotherhood". After unlocking the door with his key, he held a hand on the unopened door. Nodded briefly and psionically gave thanks for the rescue. Yet, he was soon back to worrying about more than the Doctor's plight. Diane looked ill. He had never seen her so pale. So weak. Her eyes, withdrawn and distant. Her every movement looked laboured. As if she were learning to move for the first time. With every action conducted independently. Unnaturally.
'So are you gonna tell me what's wrong now? Or after we free the Doctor??'
'Neither. I'm fine ..Neil.'
She almost fell through the threshold of the Tardis. Her system seemed too taxed to move and converse at the same time. Somehow she managed to steady herself. While at the same time swiping away the advancing offer of aid by her friend.
'I'm alright.' Holding one finger aloft to his face. 'Just ..need to rest...' Once inside, she advanced. Leaning on the left wall for support. She worked her way around the control room. Briefly pausing before the hallway door that led to their quarters. Swaying minutely as the doors slide open.
'I'll come and wake you when the Tardis and I have picked up the Doctor's location!'
There was no reply or acknowledgement as she slunk through the doorway. Neil's senses further informed his concern. Her elevated and rapid blood pressure. The profuse sweating. The gasping that followed every breath. The door closed behind her and he closed his eyes to enhance his sensory perception. He noted she continued down the corridor in similar fashion. Even unlocking her door presented her an obstacle. Struggling to align her key with the lock. Upon doing so, her pulse now racing. She at last entered her room and collapsed into immediate unconsciousness on her bed. Too exhausted to even remove her own boots.
Diane refused to confide in him. To speak on whatever ordeal she had suffered when they were separated. In fact she barely spoke or moved at all, when they took shelter. Torture? A pathogen? Neil was unsure of the cause. He assumed it was something very traumatic. But, in spite of the Doctor's wishes, he was compelled to do anything. Anything at all. Just to see that smile again. It is what you do for those you love, after all. Yet body language and other more subtle cues confirmed to the Starchild. That Diane was neither aware of, nor reciprocated, his feelings. Yet in this instance, that didn't matter. Nothing did. Except her wellbeing.
"Ms Garrod will not be with us for long, my young ward. So try not to become further attached." Neil recalled a frank exchange during one of their psychic training sessions. "Diane Garrod has a grand destiny. Five years after our first meeting, she will be honoured as the new Guardian of the Solar System. She is fated to travel in far grander circles than ours. Her guidance will shepherd the Sol system through a true age of enlightenment. Until her successor, Mavic Chen, leads to the end of the position and it's authority. Through very unfortunate actions and alliances. However, it is her reign that must be preserved within the time line. Without ...entanglements."
He was being coy. Trying to let me down gently. I am a Visitor, figurative and literal, to this galaxy. I am a random element that could disrupt fixed points in time and negatively alter events. Diane marries her childhood sweetheart, soon after her appointment. Her only love. I don't factor in her story. To that end, I've settled for the role of unrequited friend. A protector, until we must part. Plus she is half my age. That and my lineage work against us also.
Absent-mindedly shaking his head, Neil returned to the present. Opened his eyes and removed his palm from the door. Walking towards the centre console. A single tear ran from the edge of his goggles.
He did warn me.
He did warn me. It is a dangerous universe out there, he often said. Uncle Anthony was always very wise. As I lay here, unable to dream or move. I think of him and the life I've led since I left Callisto. My thoughts coalesce on the words of The Daemon and the puncture of my heart. How a fatal injury seems almost incidental, to the real damage he inflicted.
'Act Normal.' That's what he said.
I'm sure to one such as he, the significance wasn't lost. During the Dalek occupation. A small psychic sign was placed above the door of every barracks. "Act Normal", their warning to us. The Daleks were not always a physical presence on Callisto when I was a child. The fear of them, what they do. That was enough to keep my people in line. Uncle was found in a wreck. Barely clinging to life. His ship had been shot down by a surprise Dalek missile. It took him a while. But eventually, over three decades, he mobilised us. Eventually, although he suffered horribly in the act of defiance. Under his tutelage, through guerrilla tactics, we were free. Even after all this time, forty years since. Why do those words still bother me so? Why do I now feel so ..tired??
The controls would not respond. Neil was confused. When the main engines started, he was mystified. He placed his palm upon the console. Yet for the first time. To his technopathy, the Tardis was silent. All Tardis screens suddenly came to life. Baring a single image. That of the Cyberman, Brother Enoch. The overhead comms crackled into life. Neil and Diane, separately gasped in shock.
'Your purpose can now be realised.'
'How is a Cyberman able to override the sentience of a Tardis?'
'Because I too, am a Time Lord. Circumventing Capsule technology is known to us. In answer to your next question, willingly. I volunteered for conversion.'
The Doctor (and later, Diane) had informed Neil long ago of his many foes. The Cybermen being chief among them. Although in their adventures, Neil hadn't encountered them directly. He knew from Diane what conversion entailed to their race. He held a hand over his mouth aghast. The thought of consenting participation horrified him. Elsewhere in the Tardis, Diane heard all. Still unable to move, her rage was beginning to build as the Thing continued to speak.
'Conversion was the more preferable option available. To that of Regenerative Dissonance. The Divide, pushing regeneration beyond the normal limits. Made my affliction acute and untenable. The study of the Doctor's early days brought Mondas to the Daemon's attention. With this insight, a cure to my terminal disease. Once the process was complete, I was retrieved from Mondas, prior to it's destruction. I since continue experimenting with the technology. Exceeding all erstwhile Mondasian science.'
'Survival. At all costs. You certainly live upto the mantle of a Cyberman. I pity you.'
'Save your pity. An emotional response of no consequence. You and the Tardis will soon land in a place also far devoid of it.' A small panel slide open in the console. Neil hadn't realised it was closed prior. A small circular silver device lay within. 'You will attach this emitter to the following archway. Observe.'
The screens shifted to the inside of some cave system. An unnaturally smoothed archway was focused upon. 'The emitter will guide you to the area in question. Glowing green when you have reached the exact coordinates.'
'Why are we being sent to do this? Why not go yourselves?
'The estimated survival rate of reaching this location is eight percent. The risk is irrelevant to you. As you are an expendable party. Also, only the Tardis of the Doctor can breach the chronal defences of the planet in question.'
'By Anna! Where are you sending us?!'
'The Planet Skarro.'
With that, Diane's eyes flared open. Her fatigue evaporated. She sprang upright and purposely left her room.

It was a missile. Concealed within one of the atmospheric vents of planet. The crash was all but immediate. In a daze, Buck slowly regained some consciousness. The co-pilot seat was gone. The cockpit beside it had been hit, in the attack. Barney had been sucked out into the void, during the explosion. Sluggishly turning his head back to the others. Buck looked on with great sorrow. A piece of debris had impaled Twiki. Through Dr Theo. Both showed no signs of life any more. Taking stock of himself, amidst the smoke and small fires of the crash. He found his left arm broken in four places. Hanging limply from his shoulder, he failed to move it at all. Coughing through the pain of potentially cracked ribs. He saw his right shinbone, sticking through his space suit.
After a relatively hard tug. He loosened the seat belt and turned the chair around. Without lights and only one truly functional leg. He knew making his way out the back of the ship, wouldn't be easy. Not that there was much to see beyond the smoke to begin with. Steading himself on his feet. He immediately reached for his gun, as there was a scratching sound in the far right of the ship. His eyes eventually focused on several children slowly approaching. Confused, he lowered his gun. Wordlessly, they led him out of the wreck and into a nearby grate. He was thankful for the hospitality and their surprising strength. Aiding a man his size. Glancing behind him, Buck saw Them. Daleks! Two approached his ship. Gunsticks raised and then, there was nothing. He thought he understood the problem. A new threat he could rally against. He thought fate had saved him again. He was wrong.

Neil hit the wall, hard. Winding himself while gripping the open wound that just impacted the Tardis wall. Breathing heavy, he glared over his shoulder. She stood there. Stoic. smiling. Gripping the bloodied wrench. 'I thought you a Silurian at first, you know. Maybe a Zygon? But.. She licked the weapon and then continued. 'Genetic analysis confirms neither.'
'Diane. Don't ..do this.' He staggered backwards towards the entrance, still clutching the emitter under his injured arm. ' I don't know what this is about? But we have landed in a very bad place. You need to let me get back to the controls so we can fix this..' The wrench flew through the air. Hitting home with force right in his face. His goggles broke in half and fell to the floor. His unconscious form, followed.
' Uncle Buck said that too. That he would "fix things".' Retrieving the emitter, she stepped over Neil. Opened the door and left the Tardis. Instinctively, she knew which way to go, without the emitter. The distant sound of approaching Daleks. Many Daleks. Hastened her departure.
Being on Skarro, seems to have triggered something. I remember now! The Dalek conquest of Callisto was absolute. But they couldn't afford to let the Earth and their allies know of their nearby foothold. So they cloned the exterminated inhabitants. Conditioned us to be, as they were. "Act Normal" wasn't instruction. It was a sleeper program. By day, we would aid Rogers in his fight. By night, he would be hunted. Maimed. By us. Although it would be many years before he understood what was going on. Eventually though, he discovered the root of the problem and destroyed the source of the program. We were "free". Remembering nothing. He bore the secret alone and raised the survivors as best he could. His revenge came with the transmat system. The Daleks were "The Enemy". He thought us, enslaved innocents. To this day, in fact. The final push killed most of the adults. He became leader, uncle, to over one thousand children of all ages. Many since left of their own accord. As I did. Or so we believed.
I spy the Daleks in the distance. They look ..different? Although my location is known, the when, is not. I swiftly make my descent into the quarry, leading to my destination. Why am I completing this ridiculous task? I need to resume my mission. I need to be returned to my own time and place. I have an objective. A position to advance to. The Guardian of the Sol System has long been a role controlled by the Daleks. Behind the scenes. Even the Time Lords themselves are unaware. To complete this objective, will bring me back in contact with the Doctor. He can then, return me home. With the information I have gathered these past twenty years. The Daleks will be apprised of many points of great interest to their empire. Including the unexpected discovery of the Mu'on.
Entering the cave, the silence was broken by the emitter. The green glow, dazzling. Accompanied by a low pitch shrill. I stand before the archway and throw the emitter into the centre. There it came to rest, in mid-air. The air around it, pulses in concentric waves. The emitter then flared a bright blue aura and burst into a field of crackling energy.
'You have done well, companion to the Doctor.' The voice of Enoch, seemed to come through the field. 'The Crown of Rassilon. A multiversal deployment fortress. The greatest Time Lord creation of the Time War. A staging area, designed to launch attacks on any enemies across all time and space. Completed just before the siege of Gallifrey. Fearing Dalek capture. It was decided to hide it's only entrance in the one place the enemy would never think of. Now, thanks to you. The door is open and we have reached our objective. However, your purpose has now been concluded. The Doctor's Tardis has been recalled to our position and the Daleks advance upon your location.' The field dissipated. Leaving Diane alone and with a growing fear, as the Daleks approached the cave entrance.

Part 3 - The Daemons' Master Plan

Chapter Three

'Ah,'
'Ahhh,'
' ...Achoo!!!'

'You awaken.'

'Aside from this new lingering, slightly singed smell and vague pins and needles in my brain. I've never been better. Five attempts at this "Divide" so far. I don't really think things are going to plan, eh Brother Enoch?'
'You seem incompatible with the Daemon's machines. This confounds him greatly.'
Still writhing against the restraints of his operating chair. The mildly smouldering Doctor, faces the Cyberman with a wink and a wry smile. 'We aim to please! "Incompatible" Hmph. The callous application of that word seems too synonymous with your races' vocabulary. So tell me, what do you get out of this scheme?'
'Your ..Tardis.'
'Oh, I see. Setting aside the elephant in the room. To what end?'
The Cyberman advances on the Doctor. Kneeling slightly to bring the faceplate of the Silver Giant in line with his eyeline. 'The Mu'on army. Granted. No Gallifreyan Capsule can access the nexus now. However. I left instructions with my army before I left.'
His brow furrowed. 'Let me guess, you instructed them to dig?'
'Correct. The power unit I devised will fuel them for 1000 years. By hand, digging their way out of the mountain itself will take them 500 years. That is the time and place where I will arrive to collect them.'
'Leaving you to conquer, not just 17th Century Earth. But the rest of relative time and space, as well?'
'Correct. The indignation you may feel towards this course of action. At the moment. Will soon pass...' The Cyberman rose to it's full height and stoically proceeded to leave the chamber. Pausing at the open doorway, without looking back. 'With your imminent demise.' The lights dimmed as the door slid closed with a resounding thud. The Doctor was briefly lost in thought. Before he noted that although he was manacled to the chair. The chair was not secured to the ground. There were no footfalls in the hall beyond. So Enoch was immediately outside that door. The only guard needed. But, one easily dispatched. Forcing his boot heels to make contact with the floor. Incrementally sliding his shins through the leg restraints, he slowly began to push off. Only an almost imperceptible tap at first. But rocking the chair, wouldn't take too long.
The Tardis wheezed into reality within the dusty, abandoned throne room of the Crown of Rassilon. Amidst mildly flapping tarpaulin, Brother Rueben stood ready. A Cyberman device in his ungloved left hand. A remote scanner. Portably relaying Enoch's command of the Tardis' systems. Readying himself. Rueben was more than prepared to force his way into the time travel device and slay anyone somehow onboard. Brother Enoch however, suggested a more efficient solution. Activating the device, the Tardis' own sensors completed a scan of the entire craft. No life signs were detected. Their plan worked! Both companions left the Tardis to complete the task. Now both are certainly dead. Somewhat disappointed by the lack of conflict. Rueben scoffed and walked away, towards the staging area. The Daemon noted there were other methods for gaining entry into Capsules. For now, this Tardis was merely an inert prize for our Cyberman brother.

When he could no longer sense Rueben outside, a panting Neil released his grip on the control panel. 'Even compromised. Thanks for hiding me, my Lady.' He removed a lower panel and hit a small silver lever. Creating a temporary system defrag. Isolating the control panel itself from the wider Cyber infection. 'That's the best I can do for now. The Doctor might have a way to flush the rest of the system out later. What's that? No, I'm fine. Really, nothing to fret over. I am a Starchild, after all. Besides.. She.. only damaged the outerskin. No, I'm sweating because the outerskin is still organic. Prone to infections, considerable fluid loss.. yada, yada, yada. No! No time for rest though. I need to grab some helpful tools from my workshop. When I'm all done. Open the door to let me out and do not open it again for anyone, save for the Doctor himself. Understand? Don't worry, I'll be alright.' Lifting his finger tips and severing technopathic connection with the Tardis altogether. Neil carried himself as best he could to his workshop. Trying to appear as normal as possible to the Tardis sensors and cameras. Subconsciously holding the still unhealed wound on the back of his neck. While the newer, raw and weeping asymmetrical shoulder wound. Limited the use of that arm altogether. Damn skin-suits. He thought to himself, with a congested sniff. When he stocked up on the necessary supplies. Heavy hearted, he walked out of the Tardis and into the unknown. Perhaps for the last time. The door automatically closing behind him.

'WHY WON'T IT WORK!?!'
A table full of instruments flips through the air. Rueben enters to see machinery smash against the nearby wall. The Daemon almost manic, crouched in the middle of the room. ' I chose him! Over all his contemporaries! Because he was stable! He wasn't malevolent! He was easiest to manipulate!' He stood tall. Calmed himself with a sigh and held his face briefly. ' Perhaps I should have sought out an earlier life to ensnare? Or even ..Iris??' Picking up a working data pad from the floor, Rueben rested a hand on the Daemon's shoulder.

'Calm yourself, Brother. This new, quantum element, to his physiology. Our instruments cannot compensate for it. His Artron energy has been mutated by it. He is useless to us now. Now we are here onboard the Crown. The way is shut. We cannot leave until we power up the generator and activate the pods. His companion's however, may present us with a way to mitigate a complete loss.'
A clap registers the shared epiphany between the dual lives. ' Yes, of course! Using them as a temporal anchor. I will increase the power of the extraction. Draining the Doctor through them! If he can't aid in my experiments with the Divide, he shall make fuel for the fire instead!' Giddy with excitement, the Daemon saunters from the room. 'Oh and I am aware of the self-serving nature of your insight, Brother. Yes, you may now kill the Doctor!' He rasps over his shoulder.
'Excellent.' Rueben's sclera flare in triumph. He smirked at his shimmering ribboned glove.

The falling chair made more of a racket than the Doctor was expecting. But at least he was free. Albeit, a little dazed on the floor. He had bearly made it to his knees, before Enoch was upon him. Once more lifting him high from the ground by his neck.
'Steady on, old boy. You're lucky I don't sue over the faulty chair! Terrible craftsmanship, if you ask me. That's why you shouldn't furnish your home cheaply.' A shine within the Duster Jacket drew the Cyberman's attention. Holding open the left hand side, the source was revealed to be an inlaid golden cross. 'Deific iconography?'
'I know, I know. A bit garish, isn't it? Not mine, as it happens. This belonged to the previous owner of the jacket. Solomon. A friend from a previous adventure. He was a ...very religious human. Ironic, considering how many knives this thing had hidden within it.' The Cyberman tilted it's head and shook the Doctor's frame at the implication of concealed weapons. 'Wait, wait, wait. Past tense!' Brother Enoch ceased the ordeal. 'Besides I don't carry weapons. Very gauche. I tend to only keep nick-knacks about my person. Like here.. hold this.' The Doctor fumbled within his pockets after thrusting his puzzle ovoid into Enoch's free hand. The other hand tensed and the Doctor seemed to have found what he was rummaging for and produced a small capsule. Held out with his open palm, the Cyberman examined the item visually. Before dropping the puzzle and holding it aloft with the now free hand.
'What is this?' A vague curiosity noted in the metallic voice.
'A refreshener. My ward Neil's invention. A high pressure cannister that emits a temporary vapour cloud, which cleans and scents. It activates with a whistle, like this!'

'AAHHHHHHHH!' The Cyberman shrieks, collapsing. Enveloped by cloud with a glittery hue. The Doctor rises, free from the vice-like grip. Rubbing his ailing neck.
'That one in particular, he made for our dear Dianne. They called it "Au-24". A gold bomb, if you will. Just for Cybermen. I've had that lying around for years, never knew when it would come in handy? Now then, to business.' He runs through the door. Retracing his steps mentally, proved no problem. He made his way down, down. Into the lower depths of the Daemon's Tardis. He knew where the room on the other side of that monitor would be. He was thankful that where ever they were now. His imprisoned companions, nor he, had been moved beyond the capsule to another location.
This is it. By fate or providence. Now is my chance. To help them, save them all. The logistics ...can wait.

The Doctor soon stumbles headlong into sealed double doors. He peers into the roundel monitor to the left of the lock.
There they all are again. But, something is wrong. No longer dancing, they appear to be writhing in place. Silently crying out! The Gallifreyan rune beneath them, now surging like a searchlight. Bathing them all in a sickly glow.
Nooo!
'He's draining them completely now! Not just them. I can feel a pull, deep within me. I don't have much time. I need to get this door open! Right, right, right, think! What do we have?'
The Doctor patted himself down. Lamenting not having enough time to retrieve another screwdriver from the Tardis, during this adventure.
'The Tardis... Neil! Diane!' A quick slap to the face ends the lament. 'Focus on the now, you old fool!'
There was nothing more in his pockets. Nor the rest of the jacket. How very odd, for him? Nothing. Beyond his puzzle and the gaudy ...cross! Prying at the stitching. Which he found it surprisingly loose. Pulling the object from the jacket revealed the cross was in fact the hilt of a larger blade. Etched with more iconography. He shook his head and gave silent thanks to his warrior benefactor. The blade, fortunately was not gold itself. Low tech brute force, proving strong enough to overcome the more sophisticated Gallifreyan lock. The door clicked open and all at once, there he was. Stood in silhouette, before a cadre of his oldest friends. The controls for the device were fortunately near to the entrance. He knew another direct option was the solution.
Instinctively, the Doctor was aware of someone behind his shoulder. Grabbing a lurching hand over his shoulder, by the wrist. He flipped the stranger into the chamber, with skills he hadn't used in many lives. Briefly dazed, Brother Rueben tried to raise himself from the ground. Before a double hammerfist smashed against the back of his head. The Doctor shifted his view from the unconscious foe to his assailant.
'Aye, Doctor. Tis good to see ye again.'
James Robert McCrimmon. The Doctor paused. Closed his eyes and cleared his throat. Speaking again with a voice long since abandoned. 'Jamie, my boy! It's so good to see you again!' The two hugged as the best of friends, absent for the longest time from each other's lives. 'Looks like I saved ye again, Doctor!'
'Again? But Jamie ..how do you remember me??'
'The Daemon. He came to me. To us, in our dreams. Mine, was my last. The end of my days. I thought him a guide from my ancestors, so I took his hand. He gave me, you. Our time together. But only ye. The others here, strangers one and all. He said I could have more days with ye, if I helped him. Here we are.'
'Jamie.. I..'
'Will ye help the others, Doctor? I was somehow able to free myself. But I can't break the hold of this trance for anyone else.'
'I ..may know a way. But..'
'Aye. The Daemon.' Jamie shifted his gaze to the hall beyond the Doctor. ' I had to bide my time and play along whenever one o' the Brotherhood came by. I recognise a cell when I see one. I knew I could nae fight my way out. Now I ..may not have the strength of my youth. But I will honour Clan McCrimmon one final time. Do whatever you can to help the others Doctor! I'll hold off the Brotherhood as long as I can!'
'No Jamie wait!!'
It was too late. The Doctor closed his eyes as his friend from long ago, surged past him towards the door. The instant he crossed the threshold. The stolen second of time made manifest, ceased to be. They were all bound to this room. The Daemon's experiment required them for nothing else. In time, the Doctor could find a way to fulfil his "hit list", to save them all. Somehow transfer them onto his Tardis. But a brief look around at the decaying features of his friends, told him time was up. He glanced over his shoulder, at the empty doorway and knew what he must do.
Flicking the blade into his fingertips, he threw the blade and it hit home, directly into the controls. A brief sputter of energy and all went dark. The only light, still at the Doctor's back. The room, another dimensional prison, served a dual function. Artron extractor and the chronal tether to it's captives.
All at once, their pain ceased. Though in a haze, they slowly opening wincing eyes and beheld the shadow at the door. Whether a side-effect of extraction or their own fading consciousness. Each companion saw the figure in the light, slightly differently. Distinguished. Wearing a cape. A scalf, A vegetable and many other familiar bespoke eccentricities. That they all personally recognised on sight. The Doctor came, as the Daemon promised. Saving them all once more.

Their chronal tether seemed somehow reliant on their time of exposure to the Doctor. The briefest their interaction with them, the sooner they vanished altogether. Realising this, the Doctor could do no more than silently wave. A fond farewell to lost friends. Some had tears in their eyes at the reunion. Enthusiastically waving and blowing kisses. Each stolen second of the lives of these prisoners, dissolved painlessly soon after. Until none remained.
The Doctors remaining outstretching hand, recoiled into a fist. He stared down at the unconscious enemy. He wouldn't be down for long. Stepping over him, the Doctors eye caught something shiny in his robes. Bending down, he smiled. A Sonic screwdriver. At last! He turned on his heel and fled the room quickly. Yanking the cross-blade from the console en route. He pulled the doors closed and braced the broken lock with the weapon. It would hold, for a while.

Elsewhere,
Neil wasn't having the best day. His outerskin was now "sweating" so profusely, it was becoming a hazard to his progress. Puddles forming by his feet also proving a liability to his hidden presence. Between that and the worsening fever. He had enough. His system was being taxed too hard to reach the Doctor. It was time to shed. The danger. The logistics can wait. As the Doctor would say. Neil looked about the drab and abandoned corridors. Resplendent in the same, yet dusty, decor as the Daemon's Tardis. A running motif to Gallifrayan design? Ducking into a small side room, beside an elevator. He set down his bag of supplies. Affirming his hands to the edges of his mouth and begins to prise himself out.

"Hello, Doctor! I see you're busy. But could I trouble you for a moment?"
The Last Life's voice telepathically entered the Doctor's mind. "The door to my cell, it's just down the corridor to your left. If you could free me, I'd really appreciate some urgency. I'm running low on juice!"
Finding the correct door was no effort at all for the Doctor. The base itself was in a terrible state of disrepair. Having been promptly abandoned upon completion, in those bleak final days of the Time War. All plans for the Crown were halted and it's personnel returned to Gallifrey to aid in the final defence. 'It should have been destroyed. Not merely buried' Pondering aloud, as the Doctor approaches the only room with a sealed door attached. He notes a suspicious circle, etched into the floor immediately outside the door. Taking care to walk around it. The Doctor takes the very unusual looking Sonic Screwdriver and sets to work on the lock. One satisfying ping later, the door opens and the Doctor sidesteps into the cell.
'Bravo, Doctor! You even found my Sonic!!' The Last Life rubbing hands with glee. Congratulated the rescue, still sat casually in the same armchair as last time.
'Yours? Oh I see. That would explain the unfamiliar design.' An underhand toss returned the property to it's owner.
'Quite right. A trophy Brother Rueben helped himself to, upon my capture. Most unscrupulous types love the allure of "future technology".'
'Some can't help but spoil themselves. Right then, my young descendant. Shall we leave?' The Time Lord bowed and motioned towards the open egress. 'I have a fairly good idea that my Tardis is now onboard.' The Doctor began, over his shoulder, as the two walked through the doorway. Now clutching some possessions underarm, the Last Life was a few paces behind.
'Wait, Doctor! Don't step...' The warning proved too late. Lowering his guard, the Doctor stepped into the centre of the circular indentation. Suddenly enveloped in light. A series of metallic rings travelled down the beam and the Doctor disappeared behind them. '..there. That was Rueben's teleporter. Blast!' The Future Time Lord, now free however. Had little time for concern over a missing benefactor. The Mission was all that mattered. Although lost to the future. Here, within this place, it might be viable once more.
Though reproducing his technology had been difficult in this universe. Brother Rueben had managed to make some work through reverse engineering. Even the knowledge of Gallifrayan technology he possessed through his host. Largely didn't facilitate that of most Goa'uld designs. Yet, as with the Kara Kesh. The Ring Transporter was another such success story. However, for reasons Rueben could not assertain. The teleportation was not instantanious, as in his native reality. A delay of two seconds did occur before rematerialisation.
The Doctor appeared in a flash of the transporter. Seemingly on the verge of collapse? Panting and sweating profusely. His eyes darted around him in panic. Before they readjusted and he became aware of his location once more.

ii

'Beautiful, is it not Doctor? Approaching from an enormous control panel. The Daemon looked aloft with arms outstretched. 'The Crown of Rassilon! A glorious monument to the arrogance of our race. A large scale staging ground. At the centre of the Time Vortex itself.'
'Desperation. Not arrogance! The War escalated far beyond their understanding.'
'Hahaha Hardly. Fearing the loss of Gallifrey. Rassilon commisioned this place, did he not?. An escape plan for the entire Time Lord race. Able to launch our capsules across the multiverse itself. If the War was lost. This universe would fall to the Daleks. But that egotist would have us alone flee into others. Sated in the knowledge that our race, above all others, must and will continue.'
'But it was never completed. The final assault on Gallifrey came too quickly. Rassilon and his followers were trapped behind the Dalek armada. Even you have only managed to make but a handful of rooms and functions viable.'
'That may be true, Doctor. But in reality, only this launchpad is really needed.' He clicks his fingers and high above stood Brother Enoch. Revived once more and on a circular platform around the control core, activated a series of controls. The lights flared on and the gigantic core began to power up. The Doctor looked around at the many tubes lining the walls. Aware of this construction in the tailend of the War. He read the plans. These tubes would house TT Capsules. Many capsules. Launching them into a stabilised fracture within the Vortex. Housed within the centre of the base. But something was off. There were no Capsules within the tubes now. Upon closer observation. They contained life pods. Containing silhouetted and dormant humanoids. Many pods.
'Due to your obsolescence, my experiments with the Divide must be put on hold. For now. However, the next phase of my plan cannot be halted. I made certain the Artron Energy stored here would not go to waste.' A malicious grin etched across his face, as he drew a firearm from within his robes.
'You've cloned yourself through raw Artron!?! Insanity!!!' The Doctor held his mouth in horror. 'All these pods! How many lost Time Lords led to your stores of regeneration energy? HOW MANY!?'
'A few. Donated themselves to science. For The Greater Good' The Daemon primed his gun. Before his smile gave way to a wrathful scowl. ' You incredulous buffoon! You stand at the instant of your own demise. Bearing witness to a grand plan, centuries in the making. Yet all you can do is PLAY WITH YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE PUZZLE!!!'
The Doctor looked down to his hands. Unaware of when he had even reached into his pocket. A final click gave him pause. Concealing it with his hands, he looked up to face his foe with a sudden smirk. 'Oh this isn't a puzzle. Nor a toy. Nor a distraction for an over energised mind. It was a gift for my last birthday, from my old friend Romana. It was a tool. Made during the Time War. A Machina Box. A treatment for Time Lords afflicted with chronal PTSD. Would you like to know how?'
'What nonsense! Goodbye, Doctor' The ancient Time Lord raised the sight of his weapon. Taking aim at the Doctor's head.
Opening his grasp, the Doctor continued 'Upon completion, it becomes whatever the patient needs it to be!'
The Daemon shrieks at the reveal and opened fire. The Doctor didn't move. The laser bolt froze immediately before his outstretched hands. The puzzle, the final stage dissembled into several flat squares. These squares all at once formed a floating cube. Time itself slowed in a shockwave. Surging outward. The Daemon became the epitome of fear itself. Dropping the gun and backing away. As the timewave receded and several capsules appeared within the great chamber. None would open. Yet.
'AHHHHHH!' The metallic cry of the Cyberman broke the silence and it pludged to the ground with a thud, beside the Daemon. Both he and the Doctor looked up to see a tall, slender woman in a bright white tailored suit, heels and a majestic shock of fiery red hair. Stood atop Enoch's platform.
'Hello old friend! I knew you'd call sooner or later. Miss me?'
'Romana! I thought it would be you to answer the call. A little perturbed that you became a ginger before me. But I'm glad to see you, none the less.'
'The hair is lovely, isn't it? Now as for our ancient friend here. I bought some associates who would like to escort you back to Gallifrey!
The Daemon cast his gaze back to the capsules and from each, a member of The Jury now stood. The Daemon established their order. He knew what would happen next.
'Look out!' The Doctor warned, waving his arms. The Daemon raised his gauntlet into the air and clenched his fist. All it's sigils shone bright and three of the closest Jury screamed out in pain and dissolved into Artron energy. Absorbed into the gauntlet. As Romana was thrown from her feet. The Daemon turned back to the Doctor. 'NOW! For ruining EVERYTHING! You will die!!' Upon the glove being pointed towards him, the Doctor seemed to give up and raise his hands to surrender. 'Hit him' He muttered under his breath.
'What was that? Some last words of defiance to your allies?'
'Something like that' Twin Dalek lasers flared out of nowhere and hit home in the Daemon's hearts. He staggered.
'HIT HIM AGAIN!' The Doctor spat.
The assault landed a second time and an almighty pop resounded throughout the room. The Daemon at once collapsed to the floor. Sliding down a ladder, Romana quickly ran to the Doctor's side. As a very tall, gangly reptilian. Clutching two Dalek gunsticks, approached them.
'Sorry for the delayed rescue. Had to take an alternate route to get here.'
'I can see that, Neil my boy. It's great to see you. Romana, Neil. Neil, Romana.'
'Nice to meet you. ma'am. That felt cathartic and all. But did I just kill the bad guy?'
'No. That I would never condone. I thought the combined firepower of both gunsticks would be enough to rupture his time field, however. Now he is actually vulnerable.'
'Well then. As we are the only three left standing. Shall we finish this chaps?' With smiles, the trio turned to face the fallen Time Lord. Only for a shockwave to blast them from their feet.
Sclera flaring, Rueben had stepped through the teleporter in the floor. In the confusion. A glowering glove raised. Enoch similarly, arose again. Both holding under his arms, helped Daemon to his feet.
'We are legion!' They chanted as one. Daemon, appearing physically weary, tapped one more button on his gauntlet. The great Crown of Rassilon burst into life. The pipes began to hum. The shadows within the pods began to stir. 'Now the multiverse itself shall play host to our line. No mere Time Lords, but a dynasty of Gods. In every reality, upon every realm. All the knowledge of the cosmos, fed unto me. Each life, with it's own universe to conquer. I ..Win!!!'
'Not quite yet, sir.' Neil spoke up and nodded towards the base level control panel and his satchel beneath it. Which promptly exploded. Chaos soon ensued. As the Brotherhood were sent flying. The blast causing a tremendous chain reaction. Sparks and fires were erupting everywhere. Those inside the pods began silently screaming, banging on the glass fronts. The Doctor and his companions ran, at Neil's urging, back the way he came. To the Tardis.

The Daemon soon rose to his feet and saw Rueben access the teleporter once more. Giving a brief salute, as he departed. 'TRAITOR!!' Daemon howled to the fleeing Goa'uld. He turned back to the ever stoic, standing Enoch and ran to him. 'Rueben is heading for my capsule. We have little time to board one of these Jury craft. Help me with as many pods as we can, Brother. Why aren't you listening to me?' Annoyed, he grabbed the shoulder of the Cyberman and turned his Brother to face him. Mouth agape as he saw a strobing light pulse, emitted from the Cyberman's lamp.
'Upload complete' It spoke for the last time, before the body collapsed to the floor.
'NOOOOO!!'

Turning a final corridor, the Doctor was filled with joy at the slight of his Tardis. Clicking his fingers they all ran inside. 'Right, we have little time. Romana, first we need to isolate the control panel..'
'Oh? Doctor, I already did that.'
'You did? Well done, my young ward. Impressive as always'
'What next, Doctor?'
'Now the safety is disengaged. We can align our control panel with the time field of the Crown. Disengaging the field will leave this place vulnerable within the physicality of the Time Vortex. The unstable energies within, should do the rest.' With that, the three began. Working as one. The Tardis' active whirr now aligned with the Crown of Rassilon itself.
Below, Rueben was ecstatic at the sight of Daemon's Capsule. His prize was within his grasp. Suddenly colliding with another figure turning the corner. Landing on his back, he looked up to see The Last Life. 'Oh Brother Rueben! Nice to see you again.' His gaze turned to the sonic in the Time Lord's left hand. Now primed as a Sonic detonator. Standing quickly, he lunged at Last Life and a struggle began. The Goa'uld using all his strength to hold back the active thumb from triggering the detonation. With quick thinking, he shoved Last Life into the ring teleporter beside the capsule. A sigh of relief, Rueben knew he had seconds to open the door and flee this universe. Patting himself down, his panic rose. His key was gone! Daemon hadn't told him yet how to access them without it. He screamed out in despair.

The Daemon turned, as the teleporter activated. The Last Life stepping out, was not what he expected.
'Oh, the core! This will do!' The thumb clicked down on the Sonic and everything vanished.
The Tardis was suddenly thrown through the Time Vortex. The combination of the power source of the Crown, the chronal fracture, additional Capsules, the stored Artron energy and the Doctor reflected, whatever power the Last Life wielded. Created an explosion of power so great, the immaterial Tardis itself was shunted away. Yet just as brilliantly as the blast had been. It merged and absorbed into the Vortex itself, just as quickly. draining away from the Tardis.
'The next Big Bang looks like it is finally on it's way, I believe.' The Doctor observed through his instruments. 'How goes the Cyber purge?'
Romana and Neil had made a very effective team, in that regard. 'We managed to flush the systems out into the Vortex. The Nano-tech. These Cyber..mites, I suppose? Found themselves incompatible with raw chronal energies. We should be good to go in about an hour, sir.'
'Right then. We'll have some tea and drop off Romana back home. Then we are off, young man.'
'Oh, so soon? I thought we might take a few days rest on your home world?'
'Not this time. I made Dianne a promise to bring her home. History hasn't altered. Which means she is both alive and ready to be found. I intend to do just that. Before the trail grows cold.'
'Trail, Doctor?'
'Perchance to dream, Neil. Perchance to dream.' Rubbing a temple, thinking back to his time lost within the rings. The Doctor cryptically spoke and left the room. His two companions sharing in their confusion.
