This deluxe class is the closest Kup yet to the animation model, yet also shares some design elements from the War for Cybertron Trilogy. This would mean he's designed to stand alongside the movie characters already released through that range, such as Siege Springer and Earthrise Arcee.

Because MONEY.

Kup is looking pretty good! Looks like those arm assemblies are a little tough to peg in securely to the sides of the torso in robot mode. I hope that's just an issue with these leaked "samples" and the actual production run will correct the issue. The paint apps look great, but Kup's missing some coloring on his abs, whether that be silver paint or light green. It depends on which character model you're looking at, like Kup's lower leg color. Speaking of the lower legs, with all that room inside, I would have liked to have seen the wheels better hidden instead of poking out of the shins. Though it's not accurate to the character model, that is where they go on the original toy, so it's not too much of a bother for me. I love that he comes with an energon goodie box, but the biggest surprise is that Kup is modular! That's a great touch that Hasbro and Takara certainly didn't have to include, but they did anyway, and it is awesome!

Also, does his lower arm and lower leg come off (intentionally, not accidentally) like on Quintessa? I can't be the only person wondering that...

More or less, its also a question of Deluxe class slots available, then of course they may look the same height but there could be a lot more parts going into Hot Rod then Kup which will also play into price. It could have been that Hotrods design took him to a place that was between the limits of Deluxe and the threshold of Voyager, so a few extra parts were made to push him over via plastic amount.

My wallet shall not be spared.
On a side note, These designs do look fantastic!
I was previously concerned about Kup's white kibble that connects the arms to the chest, Nope,
Double checked, It was on the animation model after all.
That's good enough for me.
Can't wait.

I prefer the new Kup, period.
The only thing that could make him better is the Targetmaster.

Firstly, because Hotrod has a large combination of unique features that cause a higher price count, like the articulated hands and the alternate visor. and secondly, for the same reason that the leader class price point has packed Voyager figures for so long now: Accessories. Hot rod is simply a more complex deluxe size figure with a lot more accessories and weapons, similar to any leader class priced Voyager with extra weapons or a trailer. Nothing new here, just a feature being brought to the Voyager price point for the first time.

AcademyofDrX wrote:There are a lot of compromises in this figure to get that appearance. For example, instead of having a rear bumper, his knees are just hanging out the back. I would rather have stubbier legs or miscolored parts or something to have it look like an actual car.
I hear you saying the robot appearance doesn't matter so much to you... Fine.
But to respond with posts that make it sound like it's weird, wrong, ridiculous, odd, etc,. for people to want figures to look as closely to the actual character as possible... THAT doesn't seem odd???
My point was if a faux part helps make both modes look better, then why/how is that a problem...
I never ever said "Sacrifice all alt mode design decisions to get a 'screen accurate' robot".
These characters are based on relatively specific appearances whether you care or not.
As I said before, now that it's very possible (and really has been for a while) to get detailed molds and accurate small details, a close likeness isn't an absurd want.
Clearly designers and people who have some vested interest decided that a Hot Rod with something like "stubbier legs" wasn't the compromise they were going to make-- seems the bot mode was in fact more important than the alt mode.
And maybe this is going out on a limb, but those types of decisions are probably based more on the confidence of what they feel people who will be spending money want and will be willing to pay for, rather than it solely being a design team's preference, or fitting a company's mission statement.
But maybe this is all my inability to conceptualize again.
I like this SS Kup, but not as much as Hot Rod...
It's definitely an improvement and has me even more excited about this line, but I want to see some other figures (including from Kingdom) before deciding.

I was trying to be snarky but not actually rude, and based on your response I missed that mark, so I want to apologize. I don't want to make anyone's opinions seem wrong or less valid than my own. My criticism of "I can't understand this" is that preferring one aesthetic priority over another, like screen accuracy or alt-mode or poseability is just that: personal preference. One isn't right and the others wrong.
My point about liking this figure as a Studio Series figure was to accept that different lines are going to value different things. While there's nothing wrong with faux parts, I don't want it to become the norm. More generally, I think it would be a mistake for screen accuracy to override all other considerations across all lines.

Hey, I enjoy both you guys posts. Just sayin'.
I do think Kup's head is a bit on the long side. 3P can probably make some money with a replacement head. A miss by Hasbro, but not egregious. Earthrise Prowl having Bluestreak's head? That's egregious.

Its not just the shoulders, its the whole torso. The color is off and it makes it look...odd.

I keep the boxes, so I keep the backdrops as well. I usually don’t have them out for display, but I do use them whenever I’m taking pictures of customs or whatever. It’s a much better backdrop than my wall! xD

Would have preferred the front wheel arches to be fully painted and the side autobot symbols to pop more. Needs a chest sticker to cover up the unsightliness but I'm sure that will be done by toyhax.
Takara Legends still has some better design choices over it (head, solid underarms, targetmaster)

I've only kept a few that I thought were really good. The ones you mentioned that shared backgrounds like the constructicons, I kept just one of the Leader Class backgrounds. Some are great for pictures and displays but I honestly don't need 68(plus if continued) backdrops. That is a lot of space taken up.

Also, I don't mind faux-parts at all. That is, as long that the real ones disappear from the bot mode. Prime was bad in that regard with all those fake and UNPAINTED wheels on so many bots. Plus Ratchet's chest that are made of the vehicle doors while they were right there on his legs.
So MP Optimus (all) SS Hotrod, and many more do it right.
Posted by D-Maximal_Primal on September 23rd, 2020 @ 12:16pm CDT
I'll oblige thoughts: Scourge is iffy, Kup is shite, and Hot Rod looks decent and at least has a saw.
Looks like I am going to soon be passing on SS in general, which is a shame, the line put in 3 really solid years that I loved, even if I'm still waiting on my Blitzwing and Skipjack.

If they didn't pad the line with SS86 figures, then there could be a good chance of running out of figures that have not been made yet before the next movie drops. Heck with the current status of the film industry, that might still be a possibility even with SS86 eating up slots.
I know some will say there are plenty of figures still in need from the previous movies, and that isn't wrong, but all the heavy hitters have pretty much been done. From a marketing standpoint, I would assume that Hasbro would want at least 1 or 2 figures with some name recognition in each wave. I definitely want Jolt, Dino, Queue, Hatchet, Devcon, Onslaught, Hooligan and others, but none of them has as much name recognition as say Hot Rod, Kup or Scourge.
Hopefully this will be more of a temporary thing until there is another movie with figures to add to the line.

Let's not kid ourselves here people, had there been space in the other line, series 86 wouldn't have happened, all the movie guys would be together in the WfC Trilogy (would have been fitting really since it was Unicrons attack that really allowed the Autobots to take the planet back). That though isn't the world we live in. Though I can see a bright side to all this...no more need to redo these characters for a long while
In fact there's another offshoot studio series could do, they could go back to the live action movies development and do the character's that never made it, and of course, toy only characters like Wreckage and Stockade

This is basically my view, and supports the theory that movie characters in WfC were imported from SS rather than the other way around. Until we get a Hasbro official speaking about it on record, we'll never know for sure.
It's also worth noting that Hasbro has been working on an animated Transformers feature, probably releasing in a different year than a live-action film, so this could be a way to prime the SS line for other animated toys in the future.

This is Hasbro. They will find a way to do it, and appease whiny Geewunners somehow, most likely with a new Seeker mold and no less than 10 repaints (crossover marketing with Skittles here: Transform the Rainbow), plus at least five redecos of Prime and Megatron.
As for SS, we are still missing the bright shiny badass Camaro Bumblebee turned into at the end of his movie, and at least two other Camaro versions of him (as we speak of redoing characters over and over...)

Absolutely, I hate repaints and remolds. I hate whiny people, too. I want new, exciting product and characters, not rehashes and remolds, with new details, features and a different look altogether. I haven't seen that TF: Animated introduced us to Bulkhead and Lugnut, who were both good characters with excellent product. The ONLY other breath of change in the last 20 years has been the Bay movies. In a toy line that is really all about transforming and change, there sure isn't much transformation and change. It's pretty much a dead horse HasTak has been beating on since Beast Machines ended the last truly, completely original TF series.

Not the queen's, but it'll do.
I suppose hating repaints and remolds isn't necessarily bad, although it's been there since day one of the franchise.
You say you hate whiny people, and I'm not a fan, but this myth of the 'whiny Geewunner' must stop. I've never seen a "Geewunner" (itself a slur) who exhibits this behavior. Where are they? Point me out one.
In this very thread about this Studio Series business I've seen plenty of 'whining' and teethgnashing about G1 guys who were in an actual theater release movie 'invading' their precious Studio Series - as entitled an attitude as any G1 person who might have thought Armada was 'kiddy' (it was), or didn't like the direction of Beast Wars in general (I didn't - at first). But the ones I know who felt that way still bought the toys. Heck, even I have an Armada Prime - because I thought it was a cool toy despite the show's demographic simply not being mine.
Once again comes the fallacy that the franchise is "all about change" when it's really all about giant fighting robots changing into other stuff as an argument for 'why do they keep making all this Geewun (slur) stuff?'
The fact is, for now anyway, so-called "Geewunners" don't have to justify themselves to you, because Hasbro justifies them year after year with the products they choose to make.
When this sort of post crops up, myself and others pipe up to say, 'hey I like things OTHER than G1, why you gotta harsh my mellow, man?' In the modern era, I don't see G1 types bashing other areas of the fandom. For what? It all keeps it all going in some respect or another. If you want Hasbro to keep making Skids, Mudflap and Devastators without balls from the second movie that's fine, but know that to get that, they have to keep pumping out "Geewun-ish" stuff to keep that going.
BTW, the only year I believe I didn't buy any Transformer product was when they did Power Core Combiners. They are trash, I don't care what you or anybody else says about. Complete garbage. They also failed miserably, relegated to the dust bin of history AND the actual dustbin. But Hasbro was trying to do something different.

But the ones I know who felt that way still bought the toys. Heck, even I have an Armada Prime - because I thought it was a cool toy despite the show's demographic simply not being mine.
You see, G1 keeps going, it keeps getting recycled, new toys of the same characters as they go. And it will keep going, with a huge cast too I might add.
Studio Series has been small in comparison, 3 waves per year (save year 1), 2 or 3 leaders, 6 voyagers, 12 deluxes. Not a large toyline at a time. not even a selects release repaint.
All SS needs is maybe one, maybe one and a half years to complete the cast, in scale with one another, complete. The end. Final. Full movie cast, in nigh perfect form, and left to rest. Which is what will happen with live action bots the moment this line ends. it will fall like the rest, getting a very occasional repaint homage of some sort, but that's it.
Give SS 1 or a bit more years, and then the live action movies can rest. We will be happy. It's bad enough it took 11 years to get a combining Devastator with proper robot modes, 9 years to complete the trio of Wreckers, and 13 years to get another go at the original Megatron. And we still don't have a Dino or the completion of the dreads or even TLK Megatron's crew. Let it run its course and finish.
G1 is literally EVERYWHERE else. let the 1 line that doesn't have any G1 in it finish.
Speaking of newly completed teams, Leadfoot is a really solid deluxe figure. I really enjoy this guy, there really isn't anything bad about him
