To keep their G1 silhouettes, you need to keep the guns attached to Onsalught's and Bruticus' backs. That leaves the team leader and the gestalt form without any firearms. I guess fisticuffs will have to suffice?
To be fair, Bruticus' bios do specify he's one of the overall strongest transformers. Plus every time he fought in the cartoon he either used his fists, Vortex' blades and then there was the one time he used Shockwave.

Agreed, though you do see some of the "proper" dark brown coloring peppered about his robot mode and alt mode, it's just that it's more of a highlight color instead of the main color, which is that light brown. If they had swapped those browns around, I think it would have worked out quite nicely, with light brown highlights to help break up the dark pallet of the original toy and show model a bit. C'est la vie.

I'll second this... This lighter brown color is a bit surprising as well as a little disappointing.
While I don't really mind this color on the chest plate of Brut, on Blast-off it's a little much.
In terms of appearances, I also think Onslaught's blue is a little saturated; should be more of a slate blue.
But other than those couple issues, I think this set looks good. With the PE hands/feet it should be amazing.

Hey, I honestly don't care, but everyone crapped on me for saying that he would be orange, and yet here we are. I would buy an orange (TT) blast-off, if hasbro released it for May mayhem, it would help set him apart from -off, so, I couldn't care less personally.
That said, I do think this is a misstep for TT, as it really doesn't match up with the show (where they are clearly drawing the deco from)

Well, either way, I agree it looks orange. Maybe burnt orange, but orange none the less.
It is a little weird for TT, but oh well... I'm still excited for the set.

Either way, whether it's orange or brown, I don't think it matters all that much since this isn't Blast Off's cartoon body anyway. It's an upgraded version of it from after the era of G2.Sowndwave76 wrote:Hellscream9999 wrote:Sowndwave76 wrote:Hellscream9999 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:You know, all previous images of UW Blast Off made his brown look like copper, but the lighting in these pics makes it look downright orange.

They go out of their way to homage the original cartoon models even when the toy designs don't line up (fake grille on Swindle for example) so where it's fictionally set doesn't really matter except for Grand Galvatron, who is a departure from the norm for all of his components. It goes to great lengths to look like the cartoon model but then deviates in certain ways, which is odd for Takara and subject to criticism.

I still can't get around Blast Off's odd chest.
UW Combaticons designed to look more screen accurate but UW Bruticus looks more like FOC Bruticus?
Posted by Sowndwave76 on May 8th, 2016 @ 11:56am CDT
and first off I take back what I've said about UW Onslaught's blue color. Its fairly spot-on, and the more I see it the more I'm good with it.
For a while (especially after watching a couple review videos), I thought maybe I should just get the Hasbro version... But even with UW Blast Off's slightly off orange color,
The UW set is beautiful. Not to mention, I can't get past Hasbro Bruticus having a charcoal gray head...
The sculpt can't be at all faulted, but that color just isn't right, which is substantial imo.
Just my opinion, but TT wins with all the combiners in this line;
Hasbro's Defensor and Superion are good, but I wouldn't say they're better than TT's versions.

I have to agree with this. Especially looking at Hot Spot; there's just way too much blue.
Buuuut Groove is kinda the dealbreaker, isn't he?

Insurgent wrote:Depends how g1 you want him. Groove is still part of defensor. And there is a way you can stick the legend groove onto the top of rook in leg mode to recreate the bike knee cap. I can see how it would be a deal breaker for many, but he wasn't for me. Likewise, off road and alpha bravo weren't deal breakers. I still got the missing members but it wasn't a deal breaker.
Personally I do actually enjoy the updated version with Groove as a cool chestplate and a new guy put in as a leg; especially since they seem to be branching the Protectobots out into this massive unit including the candy kit set guys and the Rescue Bots. Plus it goes some way to alleviate the scale issues - I mean sure, you've still got definite scale issues with the team but you can at least keep the illusion which you couldn't with a motorbike taller than a fuckin fire truck

Insurgent wrote:Indeed. Though I always scale their on screen robot modes if possible, rather than realistic alt mode. And if the junkions get to be massive motorbikes then why should groove miss out?
Weeeell, the Junkions being huge and able to ride each other (not apologizing for the wording) is kinda their thing. Groove is supposed to be a guy stationed on earth, so a giant motorbike coming down the road doesn't exactly work as well.
But yeah, I get what ya mean. But individually the combiner teams are rarely defined well on their own beyond the actual combined form and maybe the leader, so I don't mind Groove having a new look and identity to him. Besides, he's so cute.

Funny you say this, because out of all of them I went with Hasbro's Defensor.
Well, I have both versions of Menasor, and Hasbro's Devastator; which from what I can tell I like just as much as the TT version.
But the others including Computron I'm going UW.
I just didn't see that much difference between the two versions, and tbh, I'm not a huge fan of Streetwise in the gray. Which is strange for me, because I'm a big fan of cartoon accuracy.
Originally I was going to skip him and only bought HotSpot and First Aid.
Hellscream kinda talked me into getting Streetwise and Blades, and now that we can get Groove at the end of the month, it's just kinda worked out.
I'm one of the few that doesn't like the look of Rook, so I'll still get a version of Defensor that I'm more than happy with.
Just wish PE would come out with an updated set of hands/feet.

Do you mean like, you wish PE would do the Bruticus/Computron Hands/Feet in Black, White and Purple? I've heard a few complaints about the pre-Bruticus PE Hands/Feet, but only that the hands can look a bit skeletal... what are your problems? Just curious because I've only ordered the Bruticus kits, all the other hands/feet are sold out so it'd be nice to get some opinions on them before they stock up again.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I have the first type in purple and white already.
I don't mind them myself, but from what I've seen the new set for Bruticus is an improvement.
If I have to get the older set in black for Defensor I will. Imo the feet alone are almost worth it just for the little bit of added height-- helps with the proportions and making the arms look a little less "too-long".
IF PE came out with this second version in all of the colors, I'd be tempted to bite, and who knows... Right now I'm not sure I'll be getting much from the TR line.
So what about you. How many UW combiners do you have?

So what about you. How many UW combiners do you have?
I have an impressive grand total of 0 UW combiners.
I know, I know; you're all jealous. But yeah, like, I'm a uni student and currently unemployed so my collection currently consists of whatever deals I could scrape off the back end of Amazon, Kapow and TRU. If UW sold stuff separately I'd definitely pick up a Vortex, but they don't, and spending £100 all at once is a bit too intimidating for my current budget. So I've got four combaticons, two protectobots and despite Va'al I was able to get ahold of Alpha Bravo, who is currently standing in as my Vortex with the ever so crafty backstory of Blast Off painting him like Slingshot in his sleep because Blast Off's a dick.
I'm mostly following this thread because I guess it's kind of interesting what the Takara decos are like even if I do prefer Hasbro's (aside from Optimus Maximus; TT nailed that one). Also the fact that Grand Galvatron is the stupidest most beautiful thing I've ever seen; UW has that going for it too.
But yeah, like; the PE sets I admittedly almost purely want for the feet. The HFG I can deal with as a hand but as a foot it's just way too small. PE's feet correct proportions and add a bit of height which is so wonderful and makes them more intimidating alongside deluxes. Looking forward to Bruticus' new hands though, his whole shtick among the combiners is that he's the strongest one physically so I like the idea of him having beefier hands than the rest and not even bothering to put guns on them.

Ehh, it's all good. I have to be selective with my purchases... Afterall, these are toys. Not to mention, I'm a big fan of quality (and most of the time, expensive) beer. But that's another topic! But yeah, $135 per set isn't super cheap.
Like I said in another topic, I can remember when a deluxe figure was $8!!
I've really only bought as much as I have with this line because I haven't bought much of anything since the Generations line. And even then, it was only G1 characters that I like.
Looks like that may be the case again once TR comes out.
I just think it's unlikely that we'll get these combiners again any time soon.
I could see it easily being over 5 years, and maybe closer to 10. That's about how long we've waited for these!
A lot of people don't like the PE hands, but I think they work well enough.
And I dig your thought about Brut getting the new beefier set. Makes sense, and I'm betting it's going to look on point.
One word of advice though-- I'd figure out the 2 maybe 3 combiners you like best (even the Hasbro versions), and try to make it happen. Not sure how long it will be before they're difficult to get, but it'll probably be a real pain once that happens.

Aye, that makes sense - referring to your last paragraph. Having four combaticons and two protectobots is no mistake; Bruticus is my favourite 'con combiner and favourite combiner overall, while Defensor is my favourite 'bot combiner and third favourite combiner overall. Second favourite is Predaking and, uh... well. I cry every time.
Choosing a third one'd be difficult, but I think if I had to choose I'd go with Sky Reign because Sky Reign is wonderful. Plus, I do like how CW Prowl, Smokescreen, Ironhide and Mirage look compared to their other CHUG toys so I'd already have a full crack autobot team picked out for this monstrosity.
Talking of which... I wonder what Takara are gonna do for Sky Lynx, if anything at all. I'd bet money on them releasing him singularly like Grand Scourge. That said, if they do release him and he comes with certain repaints I'd like of CW figures ie Bluestreak, then I may just have the first UW release I will definitely want to pick up at some point.

Well who knows... Maybe these will be available for decent prices for a while.
In fact, it will be interesting to see how long it takes before people start saying they can't find them anywhere except ebay.
I'm really excited for UW Bruticus, and I'll be pretty happy when I get Groove too.
I passed on all of the single Autobot car characters, including Prime. I have them from past lines and are more than good with those.
Don't know if I think TT will do anything with Sky Lynx... I'm disappointed that that figure isn't leader class... I know it wouldn't allow him to be a combiner torso, but that character was huge. And I know, "what is scale" in the realm of these toys.
Just think it would've been cool.
I also want them to make Predaking, but at the same scale as these others-- should make it easier to make Abominus and Piranacon too. Fingers crossed we don't have to wait forever to get them!!

Right arm is hound
Left arm is Wheeljack

You arent the only one, I think this is shared by many.

I thought it looked super orange from the first coloured promo shots. And I think it looks so bad that I actually went up and got Hasbro's Blastof instead. I do hae how lazy it is but the robot mode looked superior in colours and aesthetic that I had to give them some credit.

Hasbro's Defensor and Superion are good, but I wouldn't say they're better than TT's versions.
TT wins with some but for many its just a matter of what you are looking for. Here's what I got:
UW Superion: the difference in paint for the torso and silverbolt emphasises the new transformation and the sculpting. The use of gold is really nice too along with the white hands and feet and the deco for the jet modes are icer with the elongated paint apps on the wings. Plus at the time I didnt know I could get Slingshot later ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hasbro Menasor: I simply preferred having all different vehicles. Dragstrip is my favourite in this set and I adore the Hasbro deco. But it being such a distinctly different vehicle, I thought having 2 clon molds to be more jrring than havinga bunch of different ones, so I opted to have Offraod as part of the team. Its my favourite mold for a leg. He replaces Dead End (I got Wildrider) who doesnt have the right alt mode anyway.
Hasbro Defensor: I wasnt gonna pay extra for false exclusivity. And knowing that we would get the groove mold eventually, I just waited. A year later, its gonna pay off
UW Computron: He didnt come out yet but I am listig them in the order i paid for them and I paid for him already to get the best discount. Takara put so much freaken love in this guy that I just HAD to get him. The retooling on the combiner chest is phenominal and the different headsculpt makes it so that this looks like a totally different combiner than Superion even though they share a similar torso. Not too fond of that Lightspeed mold but the rest look phenominal, especially Strafe and Nosecone.
Hasbro Bruticus: Both dissapoint me. For such a beloved and awesome combiner, both companies dissapointed me in their release. UW is just too cartoon accurate in its colouring, except for Blast Off which is the biggest difference between sets, like WTF?! And Hasbro is just lazy with their Blatoff and some of their colouring choices are just weird. I would be stuck withe the subpar Brawl nomatter which version I get. But in the end, Hasbro's was so cheap (only 60$ USD for the whole combiner at TRU) that I just went for it. Blastoff's colours look better and I much preffe the colours on the combienr torso and Onsluught. There's too much blue on the Takara one, it doesnt make him look as much like a badass.
So here you go, my reasoning for the ones I went for.
