Just tossing in my 2 cents now: this looks aweful. I admire what they attempted to do, but it does not work for me in the slightest. Just not right to me :BOT:

Sorry for filling up the comment section with my comments but I realized that my monitor's screen was a little stretched and now that I fixed that I take my comment back Blastoff's chest and feet aren't as large as I thought.

So sorry for any comments about the Blastoff mold.

Still don't think it's leagues above Hasbro's version but it's a nice alternative.

They didn't carry over the shuttle nose-to-hands thing that made him so different for me - that's what made blast-off blast-off; without it, he looks like a cartoony aerialbot wannabe :(

But I will get any hasbro release of it, I just won't buy the UW set for it >:oP

One bit thing for me is that his arms, all of them, are still just plopped on the side of the shuttle. All that beef, and they put it in the chest and lower legs yet can't hide the arms? I feel that is a let down :BOT:

Looking at it closer, it really just needs bulkier arms.

Well, based on his legs, I'd imagine he uses the aerialbot transformation, so where would they put the arms... if they had kept the toys thing of having them become the cockpit, or allowed them to fold under the cockpit kibble, it'd have worked

Speaking of Aerialbots Blastoff kinda looks like they just took the base Aerialbot design and flipped it around.

Obviously not the actual case but it kinda looks like it.

He seems to keep up an aerielbot skeleton, just heavily reworked. And I think they could have done the nose up so it did turn into the arms, with the shoulder locations and all :BOT:

Putting my input here. that thing is butt ugly. Classics Astrotrain would have been a better retool for B.O. than that ugly piece of junk. might get Hasbro B.O. instead once the Nebraska Stores get the Bruticus/ Computron wave in since the Walmart stores just stocked up on Magnus and shelf warming RID2015 one steps . It's more military accurate as a harrier jet than a triple changer wannabe.

Well the same could be said for UW bigroove and offroad, but I agree, they could've had some shenanigans where his arms became part of the cockpit or something >:oP

I meant where the jet kibble is usually on the back and the combiner peg is the chest on the Aerialbots it's flipped around on Blastoff.

He was responding to my comment about how the arms could have been better incorporated into the nose of the shuttle, and was comparing that same sort of arms could maybe have gone elsewhere comparison with those guys, who had large sections :BOT:

I gotta be honest, I like him a lot. His chest is a bit big and the arms outside the shuttle aren't great, but I love the rocket feet and his head sculpt. The head was the main thing that made me dislike the Hasbro version.

I'm in the same boat with you. Reading all of these negative comments about him makes me feel like I'm in an episode of the Twilight Zone. This version of Blast Off looks as good (or bad, depending on your viewpoint) as the rest of the Combiner Wars deluxes do.

Something is off about the head sculpt to me though, but it's much closer to the original and is leaps and bounds better than the Slingshot repaint we got from Hasbro. I feel like they generalized his features, I wonder if this head mold will be used for another upcoming figure (maybe Killbison or someone).

It'll be interesting to see how this mold gets reused upteenmillion times over the next year or two.

I dunno, something about it just seems kinda anti-climactic, it doesn't really look like a lot of thought was put into designing it, but it seems pretty cartoon accurate, so there's that >:oP

Maybe the nose folds into his chest and that's why the chest is so large.

I would be afraid that him being top heavy would make him fall over but his feet are big so I don't think it will be a problem.

Oh my god, the tail fin parts-forms to get to his chest  you can see some 5mm ports on bruticus' wrists where the tail fin goes, it's the only explanation that make sense, as there are no hinges in sight to get it down there :-?

Btw TT gets a 4 out of 5 in effort.

1. New mold for Blastoff
2. At least a bit of a retool for the rotor blades of Vortex ( wished it were a new body for the copter)plus incorporating them as a melee weapon like that in Car Robots.

Love that shuttle ! Call it trash if you want but one mans trash is another mans treasure. Enjoy your brown slingshot and keep pretending its blast off. Maybe you can use fine sandpaper to remove his nose and mouth and give him a face plate. Im gonna drop the cash and have me a real blast off.

X both are just as real just like how long nose Prime is as real as flat nose Prime or how boom box soundwave is just as real as truck soundwave.

Welp, called it. Massuve boob shelf.

I'll be honest. I held out for this, and I thought it would be brilliant, but I feel that the bot mode is rather dissapointing.

But then again? I'm not buying this set to display in individual bot modes.

Sure it looks a lpt like the character model, but it's one of the least toy accurate and dumb looking models in the original series.

I feel like somebody nailed it earlier in the thread when they said it looked like the designer couldn't pull off getting the nosecone to contain the arms. I just think they compromised the bot mode to get it to pull off all the other modes.

And it is totally a backwards version of the aerial bot transformation scheme, which, while kind of clever in a universe sunstreaker sort of way, is dissapointing because it's not an actual new layout.

tl;dr: It's not what I expected and I don't like it. But will buy it anyway because I'm an idiot.

Feet and chest are large too or at least disproportionate with his arms and thighs.

Not saying it looks awful but I'm pointing out flaws (or at least personal flaws)

Well, the proportions always depends on the base vehicle it transforms into. Given that as "limbs", and aircraft types whose majority shapes looks like that of a sausage......cylindrical. Also, the feet is aiming for the F.Dery style who for better or worst weirdness designed the animation models verrrrrrry differently from the actual toy 8-}

the combaticons were and always will be my fave combiner. They were my first and you never forget your first. The vehicles were the most diverse and most interesting. Their cartoon introduction was awesome. Even as a kid, I did not fully like the inclusion of a shuttle over a jet. Till this day i remind myself of starscream's reasoning to have his own shuttle as megatron had astrotrain. So wasn't too bothered that hasbro did without the shuttle.

I think he looks a bit off as many have commented but will come together better once we see his paint apps. Right now, it would cost me little more to go for the UW version due to postage etc so I might plump for it just the same. I'll be happy getting a different mould over another aerialbot.

Also, Really appreciate the 4 rotors on vortex. He was the last member of my original set I had missing for a long time till my gran tracked him down for me.

These are much better pictures, I love the shuttle mode and the feet don't bother me that much, wonder if you can give him a fanmode to have him hovering like bm jetstorm.

The chest is bulky, no getting around that but considering everything else it's just making a mountain out of a molehill.

If I had the money, this would be mine as I have a soft spot for shuttles...

Silly X, didn't you read Blastoff's bio? He's canonically a jet now! Takara got his vehicle mode wrong!

Anyway, I quite like this. The shuttle mode looks pretty good (exposed arms aside) and the robot mode looks nice too. Sure the arms could be a tad bulkier, and the feet look kinda weird, but overall he looks good. And that headsculpt!

I suppose they COULD have made his arms into the nosecone, but that would have resulted in a very long nose in shuttle mode- and it might have interfered with combined mode. Myself I'd rather that they'd taken a completely different approach and made his nosecone/cockpit split into "shoulder pylons" ala Gunbuster.
Image

So yeah, I'm almost certainly buying the UW release, though more for the inevitable improvements to the other members and to diversify the molds in my collection as much as possible. I might very well get an extra Brawl and make a kit for him to convert him into an anti-air tank (or some other kind of tank- mobile rocket launcher perhaps? Engineering tank?). To be honest I might do that anyway because with CW limbs, the more the merrier.

I think he looks good. They even put the fin on his back like his character-model. (Do you think there's some "partforming" there, like Brawl's gun?)

It's refreshing to see a new mold. The repaint/retool in CW/UW was kind of an overkill. It's one thing in the same group of jets/cars.. but across factions? And passing a brown Slingshot as Blast Off was the line's least inspired move, I think.

Honestly I wouldn't have minded so much if he'd been a new mold jet or a heavy retool/reshell of Firefly. As it happens, though, he was a pretty uninspired repaint of Firefly with the wrong headsculpt. I'd rather we got a completely new character like with Rook (MIGHTY IS HE), Alpha Bravo and Offroad.

Why are you bringing up sky lynx? I was talking purely about blast off. But yes I would also get sky lynx (in some forms, as I would still get the liokaiser set despite not liking the changes because I'm a consumerist dolt)

Those are my sentiments as well. I feel he looks as good/bad as any other deluxe in the line and I am just happy to get some diversity. And plus, since I dont have Rook, I will finally get to play with the hulk hands.

any chance that they could retool the new Blast Off as Astrotrain?

And here I thought that Blastoff looked alright. Not "Original Classics -> 30th Anniversary" good, but "Combiners Wars" good. None of the CW moulds have wowed me like earlier ones did, but then again, none of the earlier ones has a gigantic combiner port to work into the design either.

I'm gonna get it. For mould diversity if for no other reason. After that I think I'm good for official combiners.

I think you've got a better chance of the new Sentinel Prime being retooled into Astrotrain.

As for Blast Off, I quite like this mold. I really hate the conspicuousness of the pegs in bot modes, so any efforts to hide them are welcome.

It's just blurry pics and you base your decision/statement on blurry pics? How you know its trash? #-o

But if you are already biased for a certain toyline or product, guess there's no convincing you to not snipe without basis. A pity you won't have the opportunity to enjoy the next mold.

Am I the only one who finds it amusing that the guy with PRESIDENT OBAMA (the guy who's campaign slogan was "change") as his avatar has a virulent hatred to change?

Silly X, didn't you read Blastoff's bio? He's canonically a jet now! Takara got his vehicle mode wrong!

Nah bro. So some corporate boob in Hasbro orders a repaint to save money and the writers attempt to legitimize the decision with a lame bio. Buy into it if you like. You know the real reason no matter how hard they sugarcoat it. Dont compare new CHUG molds to a lazy, penny pinching repaint. And since youre big on anything "official" consider this:

Takara just officially delegitimized Hasbros attempt to cheap out on the character. Even if Hasbros attempt was supposed to be a "NEO" take on the character, Takara basically called them out and said "silly Hasbro, repaints are for kids". Dont try to compare this to legends vs. deluxe groove. Its not the same thing because in that controversy Hasbro gave us new molds but made a decision based on their interpretation of scale. In the case of blast off, they just made a decision based on utter cheapness.

Or, quite possibly, they decided that having a SPACE SHUTTLE on a team of combat vehicles was silly. Scale also has something to do with this, because a space shuttle is much bigger than the other vehicles.

So youre telling me Hasbro thought the shuttle was so "silly" that changing it was worthy of their attention, but not worthy of a new jet mold? Or even a new head for that matter? Cmon bro...you know it was cheapness. There are several "in scale" high altitude spy jets that Hasbro could have used for the "blast off" character if it was truly about scale. Hasbro could have delivered a new mold that was in scale. Use of the slingshot head debunks any theory that it wasnt a penny pinching move on behalf of hasbro.

No. Firstly, Defensor was not an exclusive everywhere, just an exclusive in japan. There are thousands of Defensors out there and he is still readily available everywhere... but for a price.

That's like saying SDCC exclusives aren't exclusives because you can buy them from Hasbro Toy Shop and scalpers. The only store that sells Defensor (and Convoy Grand Prime and Grand Galvatron) in Japan is the Takara Tomy Mall. They charge the same price as the regular retail figures, but only ship within Japan so importers have to pay full price (15,000JPY or about US$128) plus tax (8% so 16,200 or about US$139) plus shipping so we end up paying US$160 or so to get them (more if the store doesn't offer free shipping). I don't know exactly how the coin system works in Asia, but even with the coin Robot Kingdom is calling these TTM Exclusives and they are definitely not sold at mass retail. Transformers Asia says the coin releases are only sold at "selected stores in Asia" which would also indicate exclusivity even if shared.

With the Combaticons not being exclusives we can get the retailer discounts that we can't from the TTM exclusives. Now instead of paying US$160 we're closer to US$96. That's what makes them being non-exclusive so much better for us.

Emerje

Hyperbole will get you nowhere Emerge, comparing what I wrote to scalpers doesnt help the conversation.

There are TWO versions of these TTMall exclusives, and as the transformers reporter for tomopop you should be aware of this. And being available in more than on place (as you confirmed) mkes it no longer a srict TTMall exclusive. While one may have a limit of 2000, the other, from Hasbro Asia, does not. This is what I was trying to say, maybe I was not clear.

Here is proof: for legal reasons, this is what TFSoure says about Ramjet, a supposed "ttmall exclusive":

This highly sought after masterpiece brings the popular seeker Ramjet to the Takara Tomy lineup with an all new color scheme and exclusive to TakaraTomy Mall! This is the Asian market release of this product

Notice their wording. There are 2 SEPERATE releases/versions, automatically making this figure no longer exclusive.

A true TTMall exclusive would mean that the ONLY place to get your copy would be from TTMall. But that isnt true. Thats just he only place you can get it in japan. And they use that slogan willy nilly to trick buyers into thinking it is more limited. TTMall tells you how many units it is limited to while Hasbro Asia does not.

Hasbro Asia produces as many units as they want snd sell it throughout the world at all online outlets.

SO the figure no logner becomes exclusive in a worldwide context (while still being only at one retailer in Japan). And thus I repeat what I say:

No. Firstly, Defensor was not an exclusive everywhere, just an exclusive in japan. There are thousands of Defensors out there and he is still readily available everywhere... but for a price.

And that price, is the Hasbro Asia price. A price which was confirmed by an exec to be based on the demand of asian collectors and not the manufacturing cost of the product. And the legal writing confirms that it is a seperate release that has no alloted limited number of units.

The only thing exclusive about a TTMall release, is the price since only in Japan can you get the actual Japan release which doesnt come witha coin but comes with a cheaper price.

OK, I don't have time to respond to all of your points in the two posts just now (maybe this weekend, I don't have a lot of free time at the moment), but I did want to respond to a couple points.

First off what I said wasn't hyperbole. Stores like BBTS and TFSource based in the US are not first party dealers working directly with Takara Tomy or Hasbro Asia to get items, they work through middle men suppliers that buy items and ship them out in bulk at a higher price.

Primary exception is Robot Kingdom which is based in Hong Kong (I think, but China anyway) so they do sell the Asian releases directly and can sell lower because of this. I actually did acknowledge that there is a separate Asian release for these exclusives, you somehow glossed over that part, but they are definitely not for normal mass retail like the non-exclusives in Japan are. Everything I've read says these are only available at select stores.

Also I'm pretty sure Takara Tomy actually does handle exclusive items in Asia themselves, it's likely the loophole that lead to the creation of the coins in the first place. I think the only place Hasbro sells something with a Takara Tomy logo on it is in Australia.

I'll comment more when I find time.

Someone's salty today. ;)

Honestly I agree that Blast Off just being a repaint of Quickslinger was lazy as hell...but he should still be a jet. A space shuttle has no place on a military team. I'm buying the UW set anyway (eventually) but only because I want to keep my collection fairly diverse with as little mold-repetition as possible. And if a better new mold comes up somewhere else (say, a 3P CW compatible jet mold) I'll get that and sell off Takara Blast Off. Either that or get the Thrust that comes with Grand Galvatron and give him new, less Air Raid-ish wings (they pop off on mushroom pegs IIRC). Or, like I say, make a new character from a modified Brawl and have Shattered Glass Alpha Bravo Vortex as the only flying member.
