So it turns out that the big tease for Takara's next reveal, which showed Volcanicus' headsculpt turns out to be.... Volcanicus. Power of the Primes is when there stopped being a difference between the toys released by Hasbro and Takara, but now Takara is showing us their take on Volcanicus. It is very reminiscent of their Devastator over Hasbro's with more cartoon accurate colour schemes and more accessories. You can check out all the photos below. It will be released next year in February and will be just a bit over $200, which is double the price the Hasbro version cost when released at retail.

Here is more info from the Hobbymizer Facebook page.

Takara Tomy Generation Selects Dinobots Volcanicus
It will be made according to animated color, with a new design fist and sole, and two giant swords!
Price 22000 yen
Release date 2021 / late February
9/9 Official Web Appointment Begins!

Studio Series 86 should be doing a Leader Grimlock and Slag. I would be surprised if the others don't show up in the line

Studio Series meaning the movie versions?...if so that's another pass for me.
Easy pass for takara's version too. And that is a bummer. I was hoping for different molds. The combiner effects take away from what they could have made them look more like the dinobots IMO.......

If the rumors are true, then it's new G1 versions based on the 1986 movie. Grimlock comes with a miniature Wheelie, and Slag comes with a Daniel. Both have had listings from Wal-Mart leak

No, Studio Series 86 meaning the 1986 G1 movie versions. That's why Studio Series 86 listings have also included Kup, Blurr, Jazz, Hot Rod, and Gnaw, as well as others iirc.

Eh... go play with Energon or Universe Dinobots.

The only flaws I see with the Power of the Primes Dinobots are size, they would look better if they were voyagers. And Grimlock is a bit out of proportion but that's because he's the combiner core.

Please do tell me which Grimlock is miles better than this one. Classics? Fall of Cybertron who's made of butter package plastic? (I mean regular release)

Ontopic: They look better but I already have the team complete so pass for me.
Extra guns as far as I can see do look good.

I wonder if like some video game stores, TT would offer "credit" towards this purchase if I were willing to give back to them my PorP Dinobots, maybe get like 30% off or something. They could recycle all the plastic into new/ better toys ;)

I'm sure you could do better than $60 for all five Dinobots if you sold them on ebay. A lot better.

They could recycle all the plastic into new/ better toys ;)

I'm pretty sure they couldn't do that if they wanted to.

With the Studio Series 86 versions coming this set gets the yearly "most pointless release" award.

The POTP Dinobots aren't even that good (own Grimlock, Slash and Selects Swoop and have handled Slag and Snarl) since the Combiner gimmick really does them no favors, unironically Slash is the best for this reason.

Omega-Doom wrote:Please tell me my eyes deceive me, I really hope that isn't clear plastic I see on quite a few dinobots..

I think the original POTP versions had clear/translucent plastic as well so that's probably the case here.

Not sure how I feel. The colors are great, the added parts are nice, but I was hoping they would at least rework Grimlock's arms/dino legs to bring Volcanicus' arms closer to the body. I think the one thing that genuinely bothers me is that he only comes with two hands now. The second set of hands were supposed to either go on the back of the feet to add stability or plug them into his sides to fill out his torso and now you can't do either. Also preferred the spiked fists. That's a major oversight, they should have come up with some extra weapons to fill those role.

Still, kinda on the fence about guying these, leaning towards doing it.

MeGrimlockFan wrote:Wait weren't POTP dinobots already IN a G1 color scheme to begin with

Toy colors, aside from Swoop (until Hasbro Selects), these are in cartoon colors. Kinda wish they had painted over the clear parts instead of under on these figures)

Weird choice and not a needed one for me, very shiny but that's about it. Hopefully this is repainted old stock rather than going to the efforts and use of resources making the figures again.

That is never done. These are, for certain, a new production run. Repaints are not literally repainted.

Having already all my PotP Dinobots, I wish for this as well.
Guess some KO company will do the accessories sooner or later.

For those who completely missed out on the great PotP Dinobots, this set the perfect opportunity to get them in one go.

Not gonna lie, I actually like them. Things like Slag having silver on his frill really make them look so much better. And with the addition of better hands and feet, it means I could theoretically get this and the PerfectEffect torso kit and have a really nice Volcanicus, thus avoiding having to track down the now quite rare and expensive TDW kit.

First Takara disappointment, I guess. The colors do look better, but with the Studio Dinos coming out this seems like a poor investment. I wonder what the thinking behind this was. Did Japan just not get the Dinos?

The Primes figures really aren't that great either. They're just the only choice for a set of G1-syle Dinos people can buy right now.

I hope Takara Tomy reconsiders throwing in some fillers for the sides of Volcanicus' torso in combined mode for the final product. Those were practically a necessity for the PotP release to make the gestalt form look "right" and not like a spindly, twiggy mess. They could probably engineer something better than a pair of spare hands this time, making a new pair of accessories and shaping a more aesthetically pleasing torso.

After both this announcement, and all the dislike I'm seeing online I'm not so sure. Seems like everyone is either satisfied with what they already have, or waiting for SS86 Dinos. I know I see lots of auctions asking for 100+ for a loose/complete Volcanicus, but I'm going to wait until the inevitable pre-order goes up on pulse, then see what someone is willing to actually pay for PotP Dinos. My guess is that they instantly just went way down in value for a variety of reasons

Ehhhhhh...... had this come out alongside the original versions a few years ago I’d’ve been sold. But given the knowledge we’ll be getting bigger Dinobots in the Studio Series line, this doesn’t really do it for me. Like the big honkin’ “F U” murder swords are totally awesome, but for me that’s about all this has going for this set and if I want to give my one swords I can probably get a decent sized one online someplace. Cool for those who want this, but for me I consider this $200 saved.

Originally Grimlock didn’t come with a weapon. Now they’re overcompensating and giving him more guns than he has hands, lol. This is kinda a letdown, cuz I never completed my Volcanicus (curse my local target), so his legs are just Jazz and Groove.

I agree with you. I just want 5 decent sized Dinobots that are bigger than Earthrise Prime scale wise like in the cartoon

I'm thinking about it. There are pros and cons.

Pros -

A whole set of Dinobots in one go.
Studio series may not give you an entire set - Snarl was only in the movie by animation error. Or be in 'scale.'

Cons -

Studio Series will likely be more accurate (hopefully in size as well).
I don't need them to combine.
200 bucks is a bit steep given I won't combine them therefore not using the swords and stuff.

So much dislike for the set, and I don't blame them. I wonder what was going through TakaraTomy's mind... Unless this is a gauge for future releases. Some PotP combiners are still "incomplete" like the Starscream and Inferno one, then there's Orthia who's incomplete in Japan because Greenlight and Lancer never had a proper release there.

Grimlock might not sell for very much, but CW/PotP deluxes all seem to run higher than original retail. $60 would only be $12 a figure. I'd expect at least $20 for each limb, without accessories.

That's why my plan to army build CW Blastoff is on pause.

I gotta be honest, I don't understand why people seem to hate this so much. It's not going to stop the non-combining SS Dinobots from coming out, it's an improvement on the original release, and plenty of people have wanted a Dinobot combiner for decades. Why is having options a bad thing?

I think people are mainly disappointed because they were expecting/hoping Takara would do something unique along the lines of Megatronia/Grand Galvatron, especially since the dinobots were already released by Takara under PotP.

Personally, my disappointment was towards it just being a better version of something I already have, and not better enough to want to buy it. So that disappointment lasted about 2 minutes, and now I am pleased at being able to skip this version.

It's funny...as nice as these look, since they are a combiner, I still prefer the original releases. With Selects Swoop, you get a uniform combiner team, which I think works much better.

But give me those swords!

Also, I don't remember the original looking so...odd in combined mode...

I think these look really good. I have the original Grimlock and Slag and then a Masterpiece Grimlock, but I never got the previous Volcanicus bots. This seems like a good chance for me to finally get a full set of good looking dinobots.
