Yeah, I have a bias for combiners with a consistant and uniform color scheme. Like Victorion or Devastator.

I suppose the fiction will come from after the cartoon, he will be so badly damaged that his Kaiju Mode will have fused with the thunder arrow......thus he will have no robot mode....something like that...

Do you really need new fiction to sell you a toy of already existing characters?

When has that stopped the need to sell toys before

BUT I NEED MY STORIES TO BUY AND ENJOY THIS NEW INCARNATION OF ONSLAUGHT! WHY HE IS A SWAT TANK? WHY HE NO LONGER COMBINE?!
Seriously. If it's someone's thing to absolutely need fiction in order to buy anything, well, more power to them. Personally, I think of the toy FIRST and I never really cared about the fiction. This give me no limitations.
Still, I can't deny the power of fiction. Because at first I thought the Kaizoku Gokaiger megazord was a STUPID toy and I would have never bought it. Seriously, that combined robot is LITERALLY just a bunch of empty boxes strung together.
Then, I binge watched the entire series. Here's the consequence.

This Liokaiser having a Sky lynx repaint as Deathsaurus for it's torso rather than Leozack + Jallguar or at least just Leozack? ... not particularly awesome.

Still, you can't deny the creativity. Also, the goal of CW was to make base molds that could be repainted and remolded into multiple characters. So, just having CW Skylinx, a brand new mold that is mostly unremoldable, unrepaintable, was a little miracle. So, they were bound to repaint him at some point. Even though it does appear as a weird choice to the fans, Liokaiser is NOT a widly known character. Hell, even I didnt know who he was and where he came from. So having it as some exclusive repaint is in itself a great move. This will put this character on the map and with enough demand, maybe a proper update will come. In the meantime, consider it as an updated version of the character in a brand new universe.

It doesn't really feel creative. I get the same vibes from it as I do Hasbro's Computron having Superion's head and chest...

Time and budjet. A repaint is still just a repaint. At least consider yourself lucky that they did bother giving a new head to Liokaiser.

It's weird, though, they went out of their way to dedicate an entire mold to Sky Lynx instead of a generic space ship bot, and the limbs all get new heads, and these are all really obscure characters nobody expected to get any attention. Then they repaint Sky Lynx as a quadruple obscure character homage, partially just to get more use of said mold. It's simultaneously doing too much and doing not enough.
Kinda almost wish the set was instead that Giant Purple Griffin and some random Decepticons. Like Grand Galvatron level wackiness.

I unfortunately have the same dilemma here as I have with Scrapper.
One version is obviously better in every other way... except said version has a grey head, while the other version has a more silver head that looks a lot better and I want it on the better figure.

Hasbro Swindle is better, but Takara has the nicer, silver head.
Takara Scrapper is better, but Hasbro has the nicer, silver head.
Just my opinion ofc, though I don't think many would argue Hasbro Scrapper > Takara Scrapper. Dem elbows

I would need to find another Skylinx at 15$CAN, and I'd take out my TF Prime PR Darksteel from storage and I'd fuse them together. I'm pretty sure it would wield some interesting results. I bet I can even manage to give it a proper robot mode. No, really!

Killbison I've got two ideas for- either make him into an artillery tank and call him Earthshaker or give him a bit of a paint makeover (and some new turret bits) and make him into Demolisher.
Drillhorn will get a new head and be renamed Undermine. Pretty simple.
Hellbat may become Dirge with some extra jet bits. I plan to some day pick up Grand Galvatron (some day anyway) and have Thrust as, well, Thrust.
Guyhawk/Gaihawk (Seriously Hasbro. You do away with Hellbat and KILLBISON, but you leave Guyhawk with a name that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever?) is...very pink. That said I think he'd make a fine Rainmaker. Guyhawk mold, I dub thee Toxin Storm (which is considerably better than Gaviscon Storm, which is probably more fitting) and assign thee to the Rainmaker Battalion. Primus-speed, Toxin Storm!
As for Deathsaurus/Deszaras/Death Czarus/Deaths-R-Us...hmm. He ain't Deszaras for sure, but he is cool (I actually like him better than Sky Lynx). I like the idea of him as a kind of "warbeast"- fully sentient and capable of speech and all that, but definitely more beast than conventional Transformer. I shall call him...fluffy Ravenus, which I swear has been used before but sounds awesome and is fitting for a massive bird-dragon Decepticon.
As for the weapon mini-con...meh. Extra weapons are always fun.
So yeah. Assuming I can get the set for cheap I might buy it as a source of Decepticon troops. As Liokaiser though? Unless Takara does something of Ginrai proportions, if I feel the need for a Liokaiser I'm buying TFC's.

The DVD subtitles for Victory that called him "Gaihawk" were based on the scripts of TV-Nihon's old fansubs from years ago, which used unofficial spellings for certain characters whose official name spellings weren't fully made clear at the time. "Gaihawk" was a longstanding fan spelling widely used before the official "Guyhawk" spelling came to finally be accepted as not erroneous. It comes from the original 1989 Japanese toy's packaging:Delta Magnus wrote:Guyhawk/Gaihawk (Seriously Hasbro. Oh yes, I'm aware that Guyhawk is the proper spelling (though I wonder if faulty romanization/engrish/Minelba Syndrome is in effect here). It still doesn't make any sense at all. Like, he might as well be called Dudebuzzard or Blokevulture. Gaihawk might at least be a quasi-Japanese name (is Gai a word?). Guyhawk though...am I missing some really obvious pun? It doesn't sound good in spite of being gibberish (like Leozack, Deszaras or Esmeral) and it isn't clumsy but sensible and awesome (like KILLBISON).
I dunno. Jallguar and Guyhawk are the errant "crap names" in the Breastforce. Leozack doesn't make a great deal of sense but sounds cool. Hellbat is a cool name (though hardly fitting given his character). Drillhorn is kinda generic, but it works. Deathcobra and Killbison are easily the coolest goddamn TF names ever (next to Sinnertwin, Slayride and RUINATION of course).
Jallguar is a moot point given he's off the team, but I think if Hasbro were willing to rename poor Hellbat and Killbison, they could at least have given Guyhawk a better name. Rayhawk? Laserhawk (for a cheeky music reference)? Dreadhawk?
Posted by Sabrblade on July 23rd, 2016 @ 7:03pm CDT
The only reason those two (and Deathsaurus) got renamed is because there was no way in Hellbat that they were gonna market children's toys with names that contained the words "Hell", "Kill" and "Death" in them.Delta Magnus wrote:but I think if Hasbro were willing to rename poor Hellbat and Killbison, they could at least have given Guyhawk a better name.
When's the last time we got a Hasbro retail TF toy whose name contained a blatant reference to death and/or murder? And I mean cold harsh references, not child-friendly replacement ones like "destroy", "blast", etc.

Skullsmasher? I mean sure it's a bit tamer than "Skullcruncher" but it's still implying the crumpling of craniums.
Also, they seem to be comfortable with releasing a toy named Liokaiser, which is potentially far more risky than releasing a toy with the word "hell" or "kill" in its name (yes I am aware that the rank of Kaiser was pretty much phased out long before the rise of national socialism in Germany, but it still carries connotations that a lot of people get really touchy about).
But anyway, this is somewhat distracting from my main point, which is that Guyhawk is a really weird and kinda crappy name.

By your own admission, that's a watered down less-harsh-sounding name. Had it stayed "Skullcruncher" you'd have had something there.Delta Magnus wrote:Sabrblade wrote:The only reason those two (and Deathsaurus) got renamed is because there was no way in Hellbat that they were gonna market children's toys with names that contained the words "Hell", "Kill" and "Death" in them.Delta Magnus wrote:but I think if Hasbro were willing to rename poor Hellbat and Killbison, they could at least have given Guyhawk a better name.

Bandai of America was releasing Digimon toys at mass retail with the word "Kaiser" in their names way back in 2004. Pretty sure the "'Kaiser" is a questionable term for the name of a children's toy in the U.S." ship has long since set sail by this point.Delta Magnus wrote:Also, they seem to be comfortable with releasing a toy named Liokaiser, which is potentially far more risky than releasing a toy with the word "hell" or "kill" in its name (yes I am aware that the rank of Kaiser was pretty much phased out long before the rise of national socialism in Germany, but it still carries connotations that a lot of people get really touchy about).
Frankly, if they had gone with "Gaihawk", then a ton of Japanese-ignorant English-speakers would likely be mispronouncing his name and snickering at him being called "Gayhawk". With the official spelling, there's at least no confusion or unintentional homosexual overtones.Delta Magnus wrote:But anyway, this is somewhat distracting from my main point, which is that Guyhawk is a really weird and kinda crappy name.

I just question why they went for a Sky Lynx retool period and not just make Silverbolt into Leozack. Beyond just shamelessly getting more uses out Sky Lynx there's absolutely no reason for it over ditching the most popular member of Liokaiser.
You answered your question: it is a shameless attempt....
However, I will be silent no longer, since Hasbro had chosen to show off this abomination at SDCC. I knew they were going with a Skylynx retool the moment the photo was shown on the Computron boxed set (and hoped they wouldn't) and my response to Hasbro is this: boycott.
I can only hope that TT sends Hasbro to 'school' again. Let's see a six-bot group, and, in separate packaging (no boxed sets). That way we can see a Deathcobra limb and other combiners like Landcross, Raiden, Sixtrain, (including the Dinobots and Dinoforce/Dinoking)...
If Hasbro wants to build a team of five, why not try Predacons/Predaking vs Anibots/Dragonbeast?

Arent you a bit overdramatic here? When it come to limited collectible repaints, they will NEVER make whole new molds just for that. At best, a new head. Years of Botcon and Collector Club should have teached you that.
That said, it's a shame that Predating, the Seacons, and other beast combiners were never done. Time and budjet I guess. Still, I have my hopes that one day, they'll bring back Combiner Wars and it will be the beasts's turn.

If Takara even touch liokaiser it will be a boxed set and they'd have a lot more work on their hands to design two deluxe that could combine to form a torso. It's not out of the realm of possibility but it is highly improbable

I know this is an older post, but wanted to comment.
I'd say the Takara Swindle's chest/torso does infact give a really nice impression of the front of a vehicle considering the mold and peg being there. Nothing I'd call "perfect", but that's really solid detail and paint apps.
You look at Hasbro's, and seeing the main tan-ish color on the inside surfaces next to the peg makes it look a little cheap. Or at least a bit unfinished.
But this is case where I wouldn't say Hasbro's looks bad.
In fact, I like all of Hasbro's Combaticons.
Seems like the majority of what I've read on here has Skylynx as an overall letdown. Which is too bad... I always hope that an updated version of a character who's long overdue for updating delivers and is something people are really happy with.

I don't know the business plans of a toyline... Meaning if/why/when stuff is on stand-by in-case it's so wildly popular that they can pull the trigger on those stand-by's and extend the life of the line...
But why wouldn't you plot it so that it's like a good song or movie where the start and finish are solid?
You know, the "leave them wanting more", not "leave them completely bored"...
I won't start my speculating, as I know some people here hate that...
But with MP Cheetor, my fingers are crossed we have some TF beasts in our future that freshen-up this whole scene of toys.
I personally wouldn't bet that the LK line will deliver that.
