In all actuality for Americans, this is the same price as getting Takara's Grimlock and a Hasbro warrior Bee, so it is really a good price

Y'know what's odd about this set? It's been available for a couple months now at Wal-Mart.ca and I still have yet to see any in-hand pics. And I myself have been wanting to buy it but it keeps getting put on the back burner.

Why did Hasbro color gray all of the parts on Grimlock that should be black?

Thats different, that isnt the US local release of the figure, thats the asian release . Its the same toys and box of course, but its imported by BBTS from Hong Kong, hence why it costs 10$ more.
Exclusive just means that only one distributor is getting local stock directly. And thats what the case is here. Only EE is getting stuff directly from hasbro USA and thus doesnt have to import and pass the costs onto americans.

BBTS Is an importer, it will always have items that are "exclusive" but at an extra cost.

While that does make sense, the price alone doesn't explain it, given that BBTS upped the price on the May Mayhem exclusives from the MSRP of $17.

It explains it greatly. You should know by now that BBTS does not just price according to their cost but according to the demand as well. Onslought was over 30$. And they new Groove was hot and that they would be one of the only ways to get him for now, so they charged higher. But here, they knew you could get these elesewhere for less so they dont charge more than this price, which is trying to be as competitive as possible, while still being 10$ more. And we saw that before. The Hasbro MP 10 reissue was in competition with the Takara reissue so they priced it very fair even if it was a Hong Kong import.

The price in both examples is about demand. And the demand is far higher for groove than for another platinum set of toys that could have been bought individually and easily available eslewhere.

I feel they wanted to do something different and offer collectors another deco variation. These are apparently not planned by the Hasbro team we know (they are very distant from this line) so I figure its more from the Hasbro Asia side of things and since they are concsious of the collector mindset, they probably figured this would sell more than just rereleasing figures in decos people already have.

Site sponsor Robotkingdom has put a pre-order for a Hasbro Platinum Edition Unicron. The final design has not been revealed but it is expected to be similar to the 25th Anniversary Unicron which was an Amazon exclusive and featured a new head sculpt. It is set for a December 2016 release.

So, this'll make a total of four special commemorative uses (Universe 2008 Welcome to TF 2010, Amazon, and now Platinum Edition) of the Armada Unicron mold?

I just sold my 25th anniversary Amazon exclusive! No regrets, it was awesome but it did just stand on a display collecting dust. I think it was $75 back in 2011 I pray it's not $150 for the people who want this .

Give the crazy prices for even small Platinum Edition box sets and how they priced Trypticon I would be very surprised if they didn't put him at around US$200. Supreme Starscream was US$110 two years ago and he wasn't nearly as complex as Unicron. We'll see.

Edit: I suppose the US price probably wont stray too far from the Chinese release if Robotkingdom's price holds.

How close does Takara-Tomy's Transformers 2010 Anniversary edition of Unicron come in your estimation?

What didn't you like about the WtTF2010 version? Aside from the clear hand and some extra paint apps on the arms I thought he was pretty screen accurate. I preferred him far more than the dark and metallic Amazon version.

Given the release date Robotkingdom being the one to break the news I wonder if this will actually be a 2017 Year of the Rooster release? Can't imagine what colors they'd choose if that were the case.

I dont know guys, the prices on Robot kingdom are usually the lowest and far lower than what they go for at retail. Platinum Optimus Primal was 119$ for instance and was released in the US for 150. I am saying that the price at US retail will be minimum 150$ for this toy. And its no use buying from Robot Kingdom to save (if you are in the US) because the shipping will come out to over 150$ anyways.

Excellent point, and it'll go with the other movie related Platinum sets.

Well, I look forward to hunting for his minicon at least. Platinums seems to be ironically hit and miss in regard to their paintjobs. Springer looks to be the best version yet, but they don't know how to draw flames, so both Hot Rod and Rodimus look bad. I wonder how Unicron will look - great or terrible. Either way I'm not sure I want to replace my Amazon Unicron.

Hopefully the box art will look like the toy. It's a small pet peeve, but I dislike it when the art doesn't match the toy and we've gotten a lot of that lately.

What exactly are you looking for in a Unicron color scheme? I was putting together thoughts and pics and stumbled on a post from Megatronus with pretty much all my thoughts. Both the 2010 and Amazon Unicron's have their merits as he points out:

megatronus wrote:I own both, and each has their own allure. This site actually has great galleries comparing them. Here's a prime shot:

Image

The problem is that the movie uses a wide ranging palette of colors. I really think it's a matter of personal preference. Compare the above to each of these shots from the movie:

Image

Some shots have more grey, others more blue. Also, the oranges vary. The two versions tease those differences out into two equally serviceable versions.

Once I have the space to do so, I plan on displaying both. 2010 Unicron in planet-mode, since the black wash on the round planet cover-pieces really pop and highlights the mold's details. Amazon Unicron in robot-mode, since I think that version meshes a bit better with my Classics/Generations toys.

For me, I'll probably buy any Unicron they release. But what I'd specifically like to see from the Armada mold is that stupid clear hand replaced with solid colored plastic. That's annoyed me since day 1.

I'm interested to see how he'll differ from 2010 and Amazon though :-?

Inflation mixed with a collectors oriented market =\= price gouging.

Personally, it would have paid more if they released a more movie accurate version when they first released it. So yeah, I'll pay more now. Go ahead Hasbro. Charge what you need to do that you can keep making transformers I want to buy. Go ahead. I'm cool with it.

IDW has stated that they want to stay away from the "religious" stuff with Transformers, so Primus and Unicron haven't been a part of the modern stories they're telling. However, in so far as Unicron is (or used to be) a "multiversial singular entity," I believe the "Darkness" of the "Dead Universe" in the IDW comics is basically Unicron's manifestation in that corner of the multiverse.

I guess... I mean look at TF:TM. Unicron doesn't have to have anything to do with spirituality. Personally I never thought of Unicron or Primus as "gods", merely as beings of extreme power, in the case of Unicron, destruction.

But hey, I'm good with that either way, just seems like a missed opportunity.

It will be upwards of 150$ 100%. Robot kingdowm is always the cheapest price for these. Case in point: Bigbadtoystore has it up now for 170$.

BUT you can wait for a discount if you dont mind the chance of it selling out before a discount happens.

I hate to be this guy, but on Primus, you're just flat out incorrect on this:
Image

Image
That's not just a tag line for those covers, Primus has been brought up plenty since 2012.

Additionally, characters such as Drift, Star Saber, and even Skids have religious tendencies which have been explored.

As for Unicron, well, I'll wait for someone else to link to my now a bit out-of-date thread about that, but there are theories :-?

Also, I want the Mini-con in this upcoming Platinum release to be Bug General colors without flaky blue Bug General vac metal chrome. Let's do it. Let's dream the dream.
