Greetings Seibertronians!

Now you may have seen a new Starscream toy grace the shelves, and you may ask yourself, do I need this? Well, fellow Seibertron user, and toy reviewer, Chuckdawg1999 may have an answer for you! Or at least, give you a nudge towards a choice.

Coronation Starscream is a slight retool of 2020's Earthrise Voyager Class Starscream (which was redeco'ed and retooled to give us a host of other toys). The toy also includes a throne meant to represent Megatron’s chair from his ship, the Nemesis, as well as new accessories in the form of Cape and Crown.

Here's what Chuck had to say:

chuckdawg1999 wrote:Bow down to the, bow down to the King! Motorhead cue aside I think I'd be more into this version if there was more new to the set. The throne is really, really nice, but I think they could've done more to ensure that Starscream could fit properly in it. The big draw of the set is the cape, crown, and shoulder pads to make Starscream look his regal best. They attach well and I have to say, the special shorter Null Rays work better overall than the larger versions that came with the Earthrise version. If the set was $5 or $10 cheaper I'd feel better about recommending it. As it is, if you're not a die-hard fan of King Starscream this is an easy pass.

Here's the video review:

What do you think of the figure? Did you miss out on Earthrise Starscream? Are you trying to collect every toy of his?

I was happy to pre-order this set, knowing full well what it was. I am otherwise trapped between the desire to display the seekers all together in jet mode, and the desire to display Starscream in robot mode as a Decepticon leader.

I actually didn't have a Starscream toy in my collection (ahem, well, a Seeker mold as actual Starscream...and not counting my Shattered Glass Starscream from Combiner Wars...), so I am pretty content with having this preordered. I really enjoyed the Earthrise mold with the other redecos/retools (sans Ramjet and Dirge, ugh. I really hope those get reissued like Skywarp and Thundercracker did.), and I am looking forward to adding King Starscream to the ranks.
Kinda glad I didn't go for the Siege or stock Earthrise Screamer, shouldn't muddy my hands-on experience with this guy lol

I thought the cat's name must have been a reference to a Star Wars character, but I guess her name was already a pun.

While it might be neat to have the extra accessories with Coronation Starscream, I already have the ER version, and I don't see it being worth the money or hassle to get a carbon copy. Plus, I also have the OTHER seekers using this mold (including the conehead exclusives which were HARD to find). That's essentially six copies of the same figure already, I don't want a 7th. My shelves are getting cluttered already with the figures, never mind giving them little chairs to sit in.

Sure the throne is good - but it ain't THAT good. As Chuck said, easy pass. More for the rest of you!

And I'm on the other side of that. I never got ER Starscream, only have Skywarp, TC and G2 Ramjet now, so a fourth version of the mold with some changes like the articulated hands is welcome. Also the command chair will look great with Megs and the seekers around him me thinks.

I won't lose sleep over not having Dirge and OG Ramjet, but I am still trying to get Thrust for a decent price. He's going for around $80 plus shipping on eBay and he's definitely not worth that.

Chuck said that both Siege and ER megs have trouble with the throne, owing to their huge backpacks made out of tank treads. Let us know if it works! Alas, unless they re-issue Thrust, his price is probably NOT going to go down anytime soon....

No he didn't. He said he wouldn't even dig Megatron out to try it.

Now, that said, the backpack probably poses an issue, but I'll verify that for myself when I get mine. He didn't say that for certain, though.

Well I'm in the same jam as everyone else it seems. This set does look pretty neat, I DID see it at my local target just last week and only own one other Earthrise Seeker in the form of coney Sandstorm. So it comes down to how bad do I (or anyone) want a sick ass throne and a classic style Screamy Star :-?

Decisions, decisions

We've already seen pictures of Megatron sitting in the throne and it looks like it works fine:

He looks like he's actually sitting down unlike Starscream which is floating above the seat due to his wings, and giving us a Sharon Stone while doing so.

My question is how does the throne work with Emperor Megatron Super Megs

I will be getting this. Part of me hates to double dip on a Starscream that is mostly identical but Ohave never had any of the Coronation Screamers that have come out so this will be my first

Again - let us know how it ACTUALLY works. To my eye, that photo makes it look like Megatron is balancing on the very edge of that chair... I'd need a side view to actually tell how far back he can nestle into that thing.

The throne is accommodating the ER/Siege mold's giant backpack, his thighs aren't that long. Put simply, I can't imagine he's going to look that great in side view in any event. If you have high hopes, then I get wanting to wait for better in-hand details. For my purposes, it'll be a toy chair for a toy robot, it's clearly going to deliver on that.

Even if Megatron is completely seated as well as possible.
I (and anyone) can see he is most definitely at the very edge of the throne... Look at where his elbows are.
If that's all the further back he can sit, that's pretty poor form imo.

Assuming there's not some new Megatron mold coming out this year, that throne design should have been adjusted for the design of the figures intended to use it.

This is not about the throne design, it's about Transformers design. I don't know what you all are expecting, but there's only so much you can do with these figures.

I'm sure people will try to use them in all kinds of ways, but I expect this throne is going to be doing exactly what it's designed to do. There are already lots of unlicensed products out there for other figure types and use cases.

I generally only review figures that I plan on obtaining, and in this case I wasn't planning to get Coronation Starscream (for reasons previously cited). But that doesn't mean I'm not curious as to how well exactly Siege or ER Megatron would fit onto the throne. And who better to ask than one of the forum's denizens, who DOES plan to obtain it?

Maybe they'd fit into the ER Quintesson Judge's throne better ;)

Totally agree there's only so much you can do with the figures...
Which is why the throne design is about the throne design. Being a piece that is supposed to be "interactive" with figures, it should be made to work well with at least a couple... And if nothing else, if it is intended to be for Megatron, it should work well with Megatron.

*edit
"It's intended for SS which is why it came with SS"... I don't necessarily believe that.
It was a way to help bump him to leader class, and was probably a better idea than a small platform that would only be 1-2" tall (what would fit in a box). Starscream standing on a small plastic plate doesn't exactly yell "regal king".

And I get it, how much different could it be and still fit with everything else in the package?
Well, considering it's a new box, this was a chance to make it large enough to compensate, and if that's bigger than what's required for other leader class figures, well, this isn't the first or last time that's going to happen.
Imo, design the throne so that Starscream actually sits on it, rather than is crouching over it.
Hastak could've made that happen.

It's going to be interesting imo to see how this figure sells...
Seems while some are excited, just as many aren't.
And a $50 price tag is definitely enough to turn away the average parent and/or kid.
For what it's worth, my nearest Target had 2 roughly a week ago, and as of yesterday had 5.

It will work well with Megatron. His back--meaning his backpack--will sit flush with the back of the throne, but his butt is going to be on the edge of the seat, because that is literally the only way you can make a throne compatible with this figure. I literally don't know what you want instead.

So I finally got around to opening my Coronation Starscream. I'm kicking around the idea of doing a YouTube review of the figure myself, but there are sooo many reviewers already. For now, here's a pic of Earthrise Megatron on the throne (although technically it should be Siege - I just happened to have ER Megatron handy). I tried the throne with "ER" Soundwave and I didn't like the fit. Starscream and Megatron actually fit better. Although he sits on the edge, Megatron indeed has the most natural fit.

My point earlier is just that I would've expected better with the throne. It doesn't really matter to me as I'm not getting this figure, and I hope everyone who has it/gets it is happy.
It just seems like the design of the throne could've been done to compensate for the backpack area of Megatron, and the lower backpack section of Starscream. The throne by itself may have looked awkward... But I don't think there are that many out there who plan on making the throne a display piece in and of itself. If the throne needed to be adjusted to make it look better when either of those figures were in it, I would argue that would've been worth it.
Again, I just hope you all are happy with it.

Even that cartoon image that was shared; either Megatron's right hip is shifted back, or he's awkwardly leaning back-- his right hand and arm could've be where they are if he were up at the edge.

More importantly, are people happy with the look of Sludge??
From the screenshots of the figure literally in-hand (even if it that's just a colored prototype), that is incredibly good...
I'd say that his overall proportions are better than Slag's... His shoulders aren't overly wide.
His legs don't look too short.
I am curious to see how these 3 look standing together in bot mode.
But I'm going to call it now-- Sludge will be the figure of the year for me, even over Menasor.
Does this reveal mean he'll be released late spring/early summer??
Re: New Video Review of Studio Series 86 Coronation Starscream (2126937)
Posted by D-Maximal_Primal on February 4th, 2022 @ 1:08pm CST
Considering how Transformers are built, I literally do not think they could have done any better to accommodate figures using the throne.

As for Sludge, he does look really good, a lot better than Slug, and he has redeemed the SS86 dinobots in my eyes right now. Since he is wave 2, I would expect June/July release timeframe.

Sludge did make me realize though that we are now at officially 4 years since SS AOE Grimlock came out and there isn't even a rumor of another live action Dinobot, but we are now getting our 3rd G1 Dinobot. Kinda disappointing.

Junkyard also looked good, though ironically the stock images made him look not as good as the leaks. Spike was forgotten by the reveal team as he should be, let's just forget that thing happened and move onto another wave of cores.

I was just thinking that because of the size of Sludge he didn't come with a partner. Also I thought well who else is there? Wheelie and Daniel are already used, and Spike got a core class...

Then it hit me...

Even if Swoop turns out to be slightly small for a leader, they can add value by including Hot Rod's sparring drone with Swoop ;)

The partners always felt super arbitrary. These leader class toys are big and beefy and feel even more worthy of the class than any previous Generations Leader Class figure, going all the way back to the first one, Jetfire. So if they simply didn't add those extra inarticulated figures to Grimlock and Slug, I would still have felt I got my money's worth. So I don't feel I am getting ripped off in any way by not getting more than Sludge.

Instead of a minifig I'd have rather they added parts to Grimmy. Like the front teeth in dino mode or screw covers for his dino head. I get why they added the minifigs - they didn't know they'd have a core class - but they're just too crap to be worth it. Slag doesn't have the same issues, but I wish his gun weren't a part of his tail.

Hopefully Sludge won't have any problems that will compel me to buy an add-on kit. That they took whatever cost the minifig added and put that towards the figure itself.

So... I was able to see Coronation Starscream for the first time in store this past weekend. One Target I was visiting about 15 miles away from my home had 3 of them, and one Slag. It was interesting to see that the new Leader Class Box was slightly smaller than the WFC/ Previous SS were (the ones from 2019-2021), just as those were slightly smaller than the Prime Wars leader packaging that we got from 2014-2018.

Also the cardboard box was a lot flimsier than I expected. I mean from what could see, the toys were not compromised in any way, but it appears they were newly put out probably that morning. I'm sure they will sell relatively quickly, but it will be interesting to see the state of those boxes if they sit around for some time.

I was hoping that would fit better, but it doesn't look too bad

Hi All! Long time visitor to Seibertron.com, first time posting.

I'm sorry if this has been posted and I missed it but I've got a question:

Is there a date for orders to begin to purchases the 86 Studio Series for Sludge? I've looked and looked but I can't find a date.

Thank you in advance!

I agree with the concern around Windowless packaging. Not everyone who purchases these items are collectors. Many are unsuspecting parents buying for a family member or loved one. They are also clueless of whats inside and attempt to mitigate said ignorance via pics sent to someone who knows. This cant occur with the Mystery Box approach so their left to just hoping the weight and contents are accurate. Such a scenario played out with a family member of mine last week who went to purchase coronation starscream for me only to bring home a box with ER starscream sans any thrown or crown.
Buying a titan is different because you have a level of weight present to use as verification. Online ordering is different because the likelihood for such a swap out occurring with an online vendor is lower (not getting into any statistics on this)

Maybe strategic portholes vice larger plastic windows would be a balanced solution but the mystery box approach is just not good.

Picked up king Starscream last night! It's a really nice set, my only prior experience with this mold is Selects G2 Sandstorm which is still my fav, but this jet also looks really sharp. And the extra silver bits add with this version of the deco is nice. Only complaint is an odd bit of discoloration on one part which you can see above

The accessories are surprisingly nice too. The throne is very solid and his a nice bit of weight to it, looks good from all angles, the cape as well is much sturdy than I anticipated, nothing feels cheap and I like how it is cleverly hinged to fold or unfold based on poses. The crown, shoulder pads and extra Null Rays also fit on securely with not much trouble. Plus evebething can be stored under and behind the throne thanks to some pegs holes

It's like a law, you have to pose Starscream in its cape and crown in that pose.
