We have seen him with a closed chest:
Here he is with Rodimus in his chest and his specific combiner team:
But what about "open chest"? Well here it is with an all white limb theme (the hands and feet are not the ones which comes with the figure though):
This photo came from Transformers Colombia's facebook page and features Optimus Maximus with Air Raid, Quickslinger, Rook, and Alpha Bravo. As you can see, the chest is the very same chest (plastic color and all) found for Ultra Prime:

Yup:
Although I do feel that the dull grey works for the design in Menasor's open chest (dont know if yo consider him the same Optimus mold).

I hope the actual in hand combiner with the correct limbs will look better. Ugh.

Plus, if trying to copy comic Optimus Maximus, you can always just paint the regular's head white. More or less the same if not better effect.

They are indeed and they're fantastic. Well worth the $33.00. (You can get them cheaper at Scramblecore, though.) Absolutely worth the purchase. So much so, I ended up buying a color set that matches all three combiners so far.
Black for Defensor, Purple for Menasor and white for Superion as it should be. Although my Superion set had a very strong odor when they came out of the box. It was from the paint and it's dissipated, but it was there at first.

That's good to know. I planned on doing the same. Except I'm getting 2 black sets, because I think the black looks better on Superion. Strangely, I like that all-white Op Max. We can expect Bruticus to get a gray/silver set, correct?Autobot032 wrote:Rodimus Prime wrote:So where do those feet and hands come from? They look so much better. Oh, I'd imagine. By the time PE's done, that mold should have a rainbow of colors and be falling apart. By the time we get to Computron (c'mon, you know Takara's going to make one), they should be held together by chewing gum wads and wishes. lol
Although...I must say, the Superion set is the third use of the mold and it's actually a bit tighter and stronger than the first two uses of it. So, I may be wrong on the mold degradation front.

What makes sense to me is Blast Off being an attack vehicle like his teammates, rather than a craft which primarily operates in orbit. If Takara makes a space shuttle Blast Off, I'll try to get it. If they don't, I won't shed any tears for what could have been. Ditto for Hasbro's offering getting a new head. I speculated on that because the only pictures of him we have are a computer render and a literal repainted Quickslinger. I'm not getting my hopes up, but I'm not ruling it out as a possibility either. I still think legends Groove makes sense, but deluxe Groove looks like a good toy as well.
Now yes, "sense" and "transformers" have historically not been synonymous, and they still aren't, but you seem to be painting me as someone who harbors false hopes, which I am not. I'm easy to please. Combiner Wars has pleased me, more or less. I don't claim complete immunity to mold reuse, because yes, even I'm annoyed at the extent of it, but I'm also satisfied by the combiners we've got. Maybe I don't feel it as much because my only combiner right now is a Superion with Dragstrip filling in for Fireflight. Point is, unlike Ultra Magnus, I can deal with it. Except for "Betatron". That can go burn.

Oh and considering that Groove is white I'd be interested to see if you can jam groove in to White Optimus' chest cavity or not as that might look better than Rodimus does perhaps.
-----
As to the under-decorated chest - I'm reminded of how the Energon Optimus has unpainted chest interior and the Superlink one has those parts painted. perhaps when some sort of Optimus set comes out in Japan what ever version they do will have similar paint inside the chest to Grand Scourge.

Groove can 'hang on' to the Optimus mold's nipple pegs with his hand holes. Configuring how he looks in that space is down preferential asthetic.

Mostly toys that have more iconic deluxes, but built around a solid design and allows you to field at least one more combiner.

I actually think its fun and fills a certain need. The combiner wars line has done quite well in stores for something not associated to a film or a show. It’s actually pretty cool and a huge step forward, since the draw to the line and the marketing is all based on the Transformers Brand itself and its history. I don’t think we make a big enough deal that this means the brand has reached a point where the Transformers brand alone is the selling point. That’s Marvel level recognition right there and while they had 50-70 years to have brought this awareness, Transformers is accomplishing this in 30 (I can say way more about this transition but it’s not related to combiner wars).
Anyways... with the brand showing this level of awareness, I think it only makes sense that Hasbro would release classic characters to go along with their other offerings. They have clearly shown that while G1 is an inspiration, this line is about building from that and making something for old and new audiences. So why not release classic characters in a new way. They didn’t combine in G1, but since the combining gimmick is now introduced to new fans, why not give them more options and more characters? Like that they can familiarize themselves with classic characters with the new Transformers play style they are experiencing. It also helps fill some holes in classic collections for characters people don’t have yet or have become too expensive to get. And at the same time, them being combiners doesn’t take away the existence of the classics molds either so both can coexist without the feeling that one is better than the other. And lastly, it helps kids and parents finish their own Frankenstein combiner in case they are missing limbs (like a grandparent bough 2 Generations figures for their grandkid’s birthday not knowing they combined and then the kid sees it by being fascinated and curious about the pictures in the back and talking to this friends, and then needs to finish a combiner).
That is what I think of the line as a fan of the brand. Now for my personal collection, it doesn’t interest me in the least since I already have these characters and those molds (or they are not in the style I want). Instead of paying for this line, I find my money better spent on paying the assumed big shipping charge for Takara’s Devastator. But while this 4th wave doesn’t interest me, I can totally see the merit in its existence as I pointed above.

The Masquerade team does not interest me personally, as the cartoon has no bearing on my head cannon/imaginary world of TFs.

Agreed. There are a lot of IDW characters that could be great repaints of these toys, Scourge would be one that'd be great (not for a replacement for his awesome Generations toy, but for Galvatronus to have a limb team)

Yeah, they were already found in stores in both Canada and US. However, unlike Wave 1 and 2, I havent seen them replenish this wave as much. Dont know why. And Optimus Maximus and the autobots are wave 4. Combaticons are Wave 1 2016.

Well, they are making the combaticons. And while I could argue that combining is both an Autobot and Decepticon thing, I do see where you are coming from with the Decepticons having the most prominant combiners (Devastator and Predaking). As far as scramble city goes for decepticons that appeared on the show, the only decepticon combiner missing would be abominus right? And Hasbro said they are only making vehicle alt mode combiners (more redeco and retool opportunities, they didnt say that last part though). So Aside from Abominus, which decepticon is missing that was on the show and used the scramble city style of combining?
So in the end it's fair. We have Superion and Defensor and their 2 decepticon rivals. Plus Devastator. So there are all the Decepticons we need, no? I guess the only thing that wouldnt be fair is how the autobots now have Betatron, but I dont feel thats anything the decepticons should be jealous about I know you guys can count the 2 extra autobot combiners but since they are new for this line, I dont really count them. Or you can see it as the autobots needing to combine to defeat Devastator especially since there are no decent Generations Dinobots to lend them a hand

Classics Deluxes Bumblebee and Cliffjumper. A portion of their plastic allotment was given to their trailers for the express purpose of making the bots smaller, and it's a really great mold even after 9 years. Still pretty cheap, too.

If you're not stingy about alt modes or size, Generations CJ (the First Edition Prime mold with a classics head) is a pretty good fill in/update.
