He looks awesome.. only gripe is the chrome... always disliked it. Mp hot rod was losing some paint after two transformations.

Also.. where's his gun referenced from? Don recall the toy having one..or am I mistaken?

Sunstreaker holding his arm is specifically from Roll For It, but that one works, too.

Like Ironhide getting patched up, Sunstreaker complaining about his bruises is a common thing in the cartoon. :))

I gotta say, though: Sunstreaker never looked so good! Can't wait!

Quick question for everyone. I don't have any version of MP Sideswipe, and I'm considering the new anime acurate version or Sunstreaker. I only want to get one for cost reasons. If you had to choose just one, which would you and why?

Honestly, there's not that much difference. If you can get a good deal on either, go for it. It's a great mold. Just make sure you're not buying a KO.
Sorry, i just caught that I misunderstood the question. Sideswipe vs Sunstreaker? Sunstreaker looks to be a lot more articulate, but Sideswipe's head sculpt is better.

Sideswipe - at least for now - seems to be the much better option. As it's a very minor redeco it's basically a re-issue; and a re-issue of a figure that is known to be an excellent toy. Not only that but it costs a lot less than Sunstreaker but is the same size. I'd suggest waiting for sales on Sunstreaker.

Pre-orders are up for Sunstreaker (and Sideswipe). The MSRP is a ridiculous 12,000 JPY, that's the same as the much larger Optimus Primal and 2,000 JPY more than Ironhide and Ratchet! What on Earth could justify that price jump? Sure, he has a lot of accessories, but so do the vans and Primal.

Meanwhile MP-12+ is 8,500 JPY.

I thought Primal was the same size as the car bots; basically Voyager?

But yeah, the price jump is insane. We've been thinking it's due to parts count in order to make the transformation work.

I've never compared, but he's at least larger than Rhinox so I'm pretty sure he's taller than most average Voyagers. I had assumed Cheetor was the size of the cars and Primal was somewhere between the cars and the vans, but again, I've never compared. I'm redoing my shelves so everything is in boxes right now. :|

But yeah, the price jump is insane. We've been thinking it's due to parts count in order to make the transformation work.

He does appear to have a large parts count, but Primal's is deceptively large as well, plus he has size and the ever expensive electronics going for him. Still feels like Sunstreaker should have been closer to 10,000 JPY all things considered. Maybe they got screwed on the license renewal?

Then again, they did price MPM Bumblebee at 10,000 JPY and he comes with very few accessories so maybe Takara Tomy is raising the MP prices across the board?

I'm sure this has already come up, but we'll likely see a G1 toy-style MP with red shoulders in the future, right? I mean, we still don't have a dark purple Shockwave, but it seems likely.

We have the toy-accurate Primal coming out, so it's certainly possible Takara is starting to see an audience for that sort of thing and said toy-accurate Primal will set a precedence. Fingers crossed!

I mean, they're the same thing - and even then, MP-38 has the extra toy-accurate mutant head he didn't have in the movie. I'm gonna go with the idea it's toy-accurate.

I'm super excited for Sunstreaker but i just can't stand the toon style head. It's almost a deal breaker.
I can't understand why out of all the optional heads included how not one of them could have been a toy accurate head. Such a missed opportunity. Now i gotta pay even more for a 3rd party upgrade with a toy accurate style head.

So lame.

Mostly because Sunstreaker doesn't have optional heads - he has optional faces. The head stays on the toy, you simply switch out which expression he has.

I feel the same. This figure looks fantastic. The price hike is understandable when you consider the cost of licensing, the upped parts count for increased articulation, and all the transformation magic needed to display the vehicle as a legitimate Countach to keep Lamborghini happy or as his G1 toy/cartoon accurate self with the custom chrome spoiler and super charger engine to keep the fans happy. The head sculpt is the weakest part of the package, but not a deal breaker for me. It would be nice if an alternate toy-inspired head had been considered, even it all it did was add vent lines in the "ear" foils on the side.

Face/head.....whatever. My point being it isn't a difficult feat of engineering to put a head on a ball joint and swap out the whole kit and caboodle for options other than swapping facial expressions. There are two distinct aesthetics for this character and both should have been represented in a premium collectors piece.

He looks absolutely gorgeous!! Quick question. I usually order from TF source but that 120 price is crazy. How is Hlj as I have never used them but the 90 preorder is better. What does shipping usually run?
Thanks

It will depend on yen to dollar conversion at the time. I usually pay about 10 to 12 bucks and get it in less than a week.

Check out anime-export. They're usually cheaper, but you have to pay for the item up front (and shipping later).

Sunstreaker's new images show off his accessories and some of his movies, and a rotating image is included that shows Sunstreaker from all angles in comparison to MP-12 Sideswipe. Hot dang he looks awesome. Backpack = win. I prefer it to Hot Rodimus' just because the intakes are forward from the back of the backpack compared to Hot Rodimus' wing being on the back of the backpack. If you get what I'm saying.

REGARDLESS! Bought. Glad I played the long game. Maybe that's what I'll do from now on.

Would someone please explain to me where the "I hate back packs" way of thinking originated. Is it derivative of the Bayverse? Or the G1 cartoon?
I just don't get it. 98.6% of every Transformers toy I have handled/owned over the last 32 years has a pack pack of some kind. To me it just comes with the territory. I mean I guess I could think of a few that are over the top or cumbersome, but what exactly do those who dislike back packs expect?

I'm not trying to be an asshat. It's a criticism that never crossed my mind until I entered the fandom and heard it from others.

Doesn't really answer my question Bee. So you dislike this back pack because it's too big?

Does the general disdain for back packs come from the idealistic pursuit of screen accuracy?

OK. Even Jazz and Sideswipe have their wind shilds on their pack in those drawings. which I consider to be a back pack.

And that reminds me Cyber P. Suntreaker's pack is really kind of one of those iconic details for the character. Like the Seekers shoulder vents, or the Datsons' door wings.

So then I ask again, where does the criticism of back packs come from? Just trying to wrap my mind around it.

And not to beat the poor dead horse, but by golly I love the over all silhouette of Sunstreaker, but the head just kills it for me. PLEASE Takara, do some Diaclone homage with a toy accurate head and will buy it with out hesitation.

It's like kibble (and arguably it IS kibble, but let's not split hairs for now). It's fine and arguably necessary in moderation, but it's when it goes into excess that it becomes a problem. Most of us like Prowl having door wings or Starscream proudly displaying his wings in Robot mode, right? Helps to make them good designs. But I doubt we'd like them that much if all the vehicle mode parts integrated into them were hanging off them; like how a lot of the lazier Beast Wars figures (especially in Neo) are just generic robots with animal parts hanging off them rather than actually using animal parts as part of their body.

Likewise, a backpack helps round out the body shape and can become a good part of a character's profile; but if it's very large and it stuffs so many vehicle parts in there rather than those vehicle parts being integrated into the body or otherwise contributing to the robot mode in a positive way... it becomes a negative. It's all about moderation ;)^
Re: Even more MP-39 Masterpiece Sunstreaker Images (1891584)
Posted by Cobotron on June 22nd, 2017 @ 2:58pm CDT
OK, good answer K. Thanks.
I guess for me packs have never been an issue. I just see them as something that makes the function of transforming possible for the toys. But things like back packs, butt flaps, and even kibble have never bothered me. (how dare you slander BW Neo! :-P )
But I agree on the moderation. there are plenty of packs that are excessive. Like a lot of movie toys that are trying to achieve screen accuracy, and just can't physically, in real time and space do so with out cheating.
The worst is when a back pack throws of a toys center of gravity and they can't even stand. Enter heel spurs!

I think for me, the hatred comes from these figures supposedly being Masterpiece figures. I understand that a backpack at times may be necessary, due to the engineering of the figure, but I don't think it should be there on a masterpiece level figure. They should have much cleaner backs, ideally. I usually get over it with time.
