Operation: Kei Zama to attend TFNation 2017

With IDW’s universe of Transformers comics going from strength to strength, the depth of talent involved in creating them grows ever greater and now we at TFNation are pleased to bring more of that greatness to you, in the form of Kei Zama, returning for our second year.

Starting with her series of covers for IDW’s Transformer line in September 2015, Kei-sensei has rapidly gained a large fan following, due to her mean and gritty artistic style, as well as her stunning commission work. Following on from her cover work, she is now bringing the continuing adventures of Optimus Prime to life (along with writer John Barber and colourist Josh Burcham) in his current titular series.

Outside of Transformers, Kei-sensei made her Marvel comics art debut with last year’s Scarlet Witch #10, has provided art for Sparklight comics, as well as covers for IDW’s Atomic Robo, and recently achieved a personal dream in working on an ABC Warriors-related piece for Fleetway/2000ad. Her Blackblood-themed story (written by the mighty Patt Mills) is set to show off her undeniable talent for monochrome imagery and prove a perfect fit for the tone of this title.

We advise all our attendees to keep an eye on Kei-sensei’s blog http://steelandstarlight.com/ for details of her commission list, as the event draws closer.

Kei Zama will be signing autographs, discussing classic British rock bands and selling artwork (including her highly-prized sketchbooks) at TFNation 2017 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel. We look forward to seeing you there!

Further transmissions to follow.

Something different, and not entirely Transformers related, but rather an homage to an earlier era of the Transformers comics to start the week. Cartoonist R. Sikoryak has been working for a long while on a webcomic illustrating the Apple iTunes Terms and Conditions, a project that will now be released in colour by Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly.

Where's the relevance, you might ask? One of the pages, the one about Third Party Materials and Objectionable Materials, is made to resemble the work on the Marvel Transformers comics by none other than Simon Furman and Andrew Wildman! You can check out more info on the book, and the page in question, below.

Master satirist tackles the contract everyone agrees to but no one reads

For his newest project, R. Sikoryak tackles the monstrously and infamously dense legal document, iTunes Terms and Conditions, the contract everyone agrees to but no one reads. In a word for word 94-page adaptation, Sikoryak hilariously turns the agreement on its head – each page features an avatar of Apple cofounder and legendary visionary Steve Jobs juxtaposed with a different classic strip such as Mort Walker’s Beatle Bailey, or a contemporary graphic novel such as Craig Thompson’s Blankets or Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis.

Adapting the legalese of the iTunes Terms and Conditions into another medium seems like an unfathomable undertaking, yet Sikoryak creates a surprisingly readable document, far different from its original, purely textual incarnation and thus proving the accessibility and flexibility of comics. When Sikoryak parodies Kate Beaton’s Hark A Vagrant peasant comics with Steve Jobs discussing objectionable material or Homer Simpson as Steve Jobs warning of the penalties of copyright infringement, Terms and Conditions serves as a surreal record of our modern digital age where technology competes with enduringly ironclad mediums.

Via a number of notifications from fellow Seibetronians, we have two new pieces of news rolled in one regarding Michael Bay and his latest project with Paramount - Transformers: The Last Knight. According to the director himself, the new trailer, the one that will air during the Super Bowl, will make its appearance at 6 am (speculating Central Time, but we may not be correct on that), and then again after it airs at the event, with an extended chunk of material.

Thanks to John Barber and Alex Milne himself, we have news that Milne will be filling in for Kei Zama for art duties for Optimus Prime #4, due out next month! Milne has been absent art duties recently as Jack Lawrence has been drawing the first story arc of Lost Light, so the fill in is a nice return for Milne prior to his art duties for a Lost Light arc. You can read the pair of tweets below, and let us know what you think in the comments section below!

Alex Milne wrote:So I guess I can mention I filled in for interiors for Optimus Prime issue 4. Super fun to work on. I hope you will like it :)

John Barber wrote:Optimus #4 is the first time @markerguru and I worked together as artist/writer since we did 3 Dark of the Moon in-pack comics in 2011.

Operation: Bob Budiansky to attend TFNation 2017

We are honoured to announce that Bob Budiansky, the man who started the Transformer mythos and gave us so many of the iconic characters we enjoy today, will be joining us for his first UK Transformer event, at TFNation 2017.

Bob’s history goes back to the early 1970’s after his reintroduction to the world of comic books. A passion he would late turn into a lifelong career.

As an editor, illustrator, and writer, mostly for Marvel, Bob witnessed, first hand, some of the most defining years in the industry. He edited titles like Spider-Man, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four and contributed many covers to other titles across the Marvel universe. His involvement on Ghost Rider (with Dave Simons and Roger Stern) spans a period many fans considered as a defining era in the character's history and he created and wrote his own series, Sleepwalker.

And then, there are the Transformers…

Approached by Hasbro in 1983 to create a story line around a series of transforming toy robots, Marvel’s initial material was rejected before Bob stepped in, renaming most of the characters and revising personalities for the likes of Megatron, the Dinobots, Wheeljack, and countless others. He edited the very first Transformers mini-series in 1984 and scripted most of the next 50-plus issues of the US run. He also named and created the character profiles for over 250 of the Transformer toys (yes, the original tech specs) during the first six years of the brand’s existence, developing new story treatments as Hasbro introduced new lines of Transformers. On top of all this, he occasionally even pencilled a Transformers comic book cover or two. Bob’s work on Transformers doesn’t just end there though as he returned to the franchise to write IDW’s Transformers The Movie 20th Anniversary miniseries.
Bob Budiansky will be meeting fans, signing autographs and taking part in panels during our convention, which will run from Friday 11th and Sunday 13th August 2017.

Further transmissions to follow, including an update on 28/01 on the latest ticket and hotel details.

A new interview has been sent to us via Seibertronian Stuartmaximus where Santiago Cabrera talks about his role in the upcoming Transformers: The Last Knight movie. The interview was done in Spanish, so some translation is necessary if you don't speak the language. In the interview, Cabrera talks about how he was looking at movie roles, and joined up with Transformers when the casting director for another movie he was interested in pointed him in that direction.

While he did not know really anything about Transformers, he decided to give it a try. He would then attend an interview with Micheal Bay, who hired him on for the movie. Cabrera would talk about in the interview how this movie was a big opportunity for him, seeing as how it will be his first blockbuster and it is a largely successful movie series.

Cabrera would also go on to talk a little bit about his character in the movie.

Spoiler Alert Below!

In the movie, Cabrera's character is a retired military man who is now head of an organization called TRF that hunts down Earth-based Transformers, sort of like a successor to Cemetery Wind. It can be guessed that this organization is also home to former Major Lennox, who is returning in the movie and has been seen filming with Cabrera. Cabrera also let slip he would be down for returning in Transformers 6, suggesting his character would survive the film.

End Spoilers

You can find the whole interview by clicking the link above, and tell us what you think of this latest interview related to The Last Knight below!
