I think they are pretty common. I've had several and I don't eat a whole lot of acidic foods, but I have nerve problems and sometimes bite my own cheeks and I also have a lot of stress. So perhaps I'm just prone to 'em. Now I have a friend that has had many, many cold sores and they are nothing like them. Cold sores are outside of your mouth (almost every time, I think) and they are more like a blister. At least you can't see a canker sore. You just get the wonderful experience of an ulcer on your sensitive gums, cheeks, or tongue.

You're...English?

Maybe it's my Dr. Pepper consumption. I have no idea what I did to deserve such hell! I'd rather have a needle put in my back again than endure a canker sore like I had a month or two ago. It was pure misery.

Put an aspirin directly on it and let it dissolve. It will taste nasty, but will work.

I'm telling you, Listerine works. It gets rid of the infection causing it. The pain is brief and not really that bad. It's a good kind of burn like lactic acid.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised.

It's probably something that comes from living in a largely manufactured world. Our immune systems don't know how to fight certain bacteria that is found in the mouth, and there it is.

It's kind of the theory that people who don't shower very often also don't get sick as often. Don't know how true it is, but the idea is that showering all the time deprives your body of the chance to develope certain immunities.

Another example would be anti-bacterial soap. Don't use it. It's actually bad for you because it kills everything on your hands, even helpful protozoans and other microscopic organisms that are beneficial to us. Use Ivory. It gets the dirt off, and the rest will follow.

A third example would be the theory that kids who grow up on farms are way less likely to develop allergies. Being exposed to lots of different animal species, and the various crazy bacteria that come with them, at a young age can give your body the training it needs to fight off stuff like pollen. Whereas us non-farm kids get allergies because we grew up in cleaner environments.

So to tie it all together, I wouldn't be surprised at all if canker sores are the result of some immune-dulling environment. Either from being too clean or too dirty in the wrong way, like pollution.

I think theres propally some truth to those theorys, not heard the antibacterial soap one before, but it does make sence.

All my mates are allergic to at least two or three foods to some degree, and loads are allergic to animals. I'm not allergic to anything, aside from allergy medicen *ironic no?* But I did grow up on a farm, so there you go.

People are being way to concerned about keeping thier homes clean and "germ free" now I think, they don't get it could actually be harmful in the long run to fill their homes with wacky pollen filters and the like. Isnt the number of kids with severe allergic reactions the highest it's ever been?

They say kids that ate their boogers have better immune systems as adults than those that didn't. Makes sense.

I'm not allergic to anything. I've only ever had a reaction to one medicine, and it wasn't like hives or anything. I also get sick once or twice a year, and one of those is usually in the summer. You decide if I was a boogie eater or not..

I used to get canker sores a lot when I had braces and for some time after. I know of 1 fool proof method of getting instant relief. What you need to get is a Styptic Pencil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Styptic

You generally use these to stop the bleeding when you cut yourself shaving. Just run it a little warm water over the tip and put it directly on the sore. It's going to taste really sour and I'm pretty sure you shouldn't swallow any of it but it will seal up the sore just as it would seal up a cut on your face. Sure it will sting a little but it's no where near as bad a listerine.

Anyway, I hope it's all healed by now. I've been there and i feel your pain. :D

I once caught a 21 year old man eating a booger. As I was coming into the room he was digging for gold. Upon inspection of his prize, he devoured it.

He should never get sick, ever.

Old people get to a point where they simply don't care anymore...or don't know.

If you think of all the disgusting things we ate as children it's really a miracle we didn't all die from some kind of nasty something. My child licks rocks and until recently, ate dirt. He's lucky if he doesn't get pinworms.

I have licked the odd rock at the beach *salty*
Never eaten dirt though...wouldnt think it tastes very nice. :?

I used to mess in ponds and lakes and all manner of nasty mudbanks as a kid, pretty much the most bacteria filled place ever I would think... loads of nasty stuff in water.

I used to crawl under my house and capture frogs. Sounds very sanitary! Once I went to the beach as a kid and swam in some kind of pond. As soon as I got out someone brought a sign out that said it had some kind of bacteria. At least I didn't get sick.

One thing I wonder: why do kids get chicken pox and are fine, but it's sometimes serious for adults?

I'll lick a cut, but I never could bring myself to eat a booger.

I thing it's cause I'm a fan of gore not grose.

Also, I've always had a thing for hygene(maybe mispelt).

However for a cold sore, Ambisole, and salt water will only make it worse!

Hell to much sodium can cause these.

Lysterine is a great disenfectant, and will help sanatize it and kill the infection quick.

However, back in my trucker days, one of my coworkers told me that poison ivy cream is a great cure.

He learned it from a a street walker, and I've seen him do it and it worked

I've also seen Lanicane used too.

Well, I hoped these fun facts learned from a friends seedy pas.... well, life in general, and helping my sister study during medical school have helped.

Either way, I'm glad I haven't gotten one of these in years!

You're immunities are differnt when your a kid, way more flexable.

Chiken Pox is a constantly mutating illness, but not a severe one, so a versatile immune system is more apt to compesate in dealing with it.

However once a body reaches maturity, the immune system is more set in it's ways, and less abile to adapt.

This is much like Babies being born with HIV having a (slim) chance of purging themselves of it while an adult has pretty much no chance at all.

Stem Cells need to be looked at, thankfuly they found a way to extract them via non fetal means so now we aren't offending republicans, christians, or other idiots, who clamor for holy wars and what not while us hethens are trying to fix what they're **** up.

Aye, my uncle has got shingles at the moment, quite badly, but he also had chicken pox twice as a kid, so maybe his immune system just couldnt figure it out.
