I think you're going about this the hardest way possible.

1. Create a database template
2. Let registered users populate it, upload pictures, report spam and errors, and get some volunteer moderators.
3. That's it, there is no 3.

This is how the big toy collector databases do it like MyFigureCollection.net (for Japanese toys) and Shmax.com (which already has a pretty complete Transformers database with over 17K entries).
