So there is a game that I've wanted to play since I've heard about it. I'm kind of a cheap ass and most indie games either become one of the "free" PS+ games are get severe discounts. Guess what I got this month:

Image

Paint me excited!

If you don't know anything about this game, then stay that way, go find a copy for your gaming system of choice and play it. If you want to know more then I'll give you just a bit more. It's what the kids would "a walking simulator" (goddammit CoD :-x ). Think MYST if you're old enough. All I will tell you is that you explore a house and there is a mystery to be solved. I finished it about 5 hours (probably cause I like to take my time and enjoy a game). And if you want just more than my seal of approval, my wife applauded as the credits rolled :APPLAUSE: seriously ;)^

Click here to be taken to the game's website and find you a copy! DO IT! PLAY IT! Then come back and thank me later.

The problem is that there's nothing to the game outside of walking around and picking up stuff to get a tidbit of the story. And that the story itself isn't even that good, spoiler alert: The family went out and the little sister stole everything of value to elope with her girlfriend. Nothing you do matters. There is no mystery to solve, you don't impact the plot. It's worth nothing I utterly despise stories that can be solved by the protagonist not being present.

And the atmosphere is a lie! Unlike, say Amnesia, which also uses the fear that something might happen, until it eventually does and all subsequent feelings of paranoia are then justified, Gone Home doesn't have that. It pretends to be a horror game just for marketing, and then fails to deliver. It's like Five Nights at Freddy's but all the animatronics stay right where they are and all you do is find out what Phone Guy was doing.

But the worst thing, the absolutely worst thing is the people with dramatically low standards who praise this games because of this "Games as art" mentality, and think it's just the "CoD generation" bashing the game. It's like the biggest "**** you." Because apparently I have standards and I don't want to play a trash walking simulator because a bunch of reviewers were paid off to love it, apparently that must mean I have no standards at all.

It's not a good game. There is nothing anyone, anywhere, could possibly say to convince me otherwise. It's a half-assed piece of crap and they only got away with it by duping people into it by invoking "games as art."

You know what I finished the other night? Fallout 4: Far Harbor. The Island itself is legitimately creepy, covered in a rad-heavy fog and populated with angry abominations. (Not helped by the fact that I was in my 50s, so the game sent the really nasty stuff after me) You actions have proper impact and determine how the story plays out and concludes, and there's a serious ambiguity about everything. (Is Kasumi really a synth? Is the Sole Survivor really human? Is DiMA good or is he has bad as Tektus? Is Far Harbor itself worth saving or should you just burn it to the ground? That's up to you to decide) All this from a $25 DLC that took me a monumental 18 hours to complete. (Some full games don't last that long, no DLC is expected to last that long, but Bethesda delivers) You know, everything Gone Home wanted to be, but without lying or half-assing it, and for a mere $5 more.

I got Gone Home on the Xbox One and it's pretty boring IMHO.

I guess I would be let down after playing the vastly superior Life is Strange: Season 1 first. Which has a great story, characters, tons of different choices that can affect various outcomes, setting, and a heartbreaking ending that actually works.

Gone Home feels like it's trying to sell me the house that it takes place in and I don't feel invested or even care for the character. While I want to see what happens to not only the main characters in Life is Strange but all the supporting characters and the residents of the town of Arcadia Bay as well.

Fallout 4: Far Harbor is as Shadowman pointed out very creepy and morally grey and is really Bethesda's best story they ever done.

Gone Home is a curiosity that got a lot press because they wanted something different and because it dealt with some controversial subject matter in a way that if you didn't know the sister was a lesbian then you're the wrong person to play it. Life is Strange: Season 1 dealt with depression, suicide, harassment, bulling, drugs, and the morality of time travel in a frank and honest way.

Ha, I missed those links yesterday. Shame its only on 360 for that price. Definitely on the pick up cheap list. I played the demo and it was a cool departure from the main series. I'm. On a huge fan of Platinum games, but this on was fun and the over the top action matched the over the top MGS silly drama.

The weird thing is I searched and there are two 360 listings (as of yesterday). But that is the exception and not the rule. If you hold out and hunt you can score some good deals in games here and there. We have nothing on those sweet Canadian theft stores - jeez #-o

Ad-Block or GTFO. The site runs slower than **** without it. I wish mobile Chrome would get one. Kills me to surf on my phone.

I don't mind seeing the ADs, but use the ones that don't slow me down.

I wouldn't say it's a problem, just the nature of the beastie. I find all sites too slow without AD block. It could also be my slow ass computer.

I just read the staff email about the e bay links and I just thought of new game to play; type/edit post without the e bay links.

Woot, I'm on board too. I've been cuddling up with the 3DS and I'm ready for a bigger Nintendo commitment.

In the vien of this thread, I've been playing all the games, but that's an update for anothwr time.

Gonna talk about No Man's Sky, so let's keep it civil this time. Also OoT updates, Alien: Isolation and how I'm playing survival games wrong. And to wrap it up, just how much modern gaming is starting to annoy me and my summer romance with retro games.

Oh and I dipped my toe into an unfamiliar genre: MMO - FFXIV: overwhelmed!

I would like to hear your thoughts on No Man Sky, Carry, and I dont mind if things get ugly. I personally havent been feeling it with games aside from the DS, where I am still having a blast everyday.

The last time I was really into the newsest releases was at the tail end of the PS3, with Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us coming out back to back. Regardless of one's opinion on those games, that was a time to be alive, everyone was talking and both games wer nice and polished day one. And for some reason all that stopped after that. The new consoles brought about a ton of dissapointment where things felt more like proof of concept than an actual game. No Man Sky, Titafall, Evolve, The Crew, Knack, The Order, Quantum Break. None of these were satisfying, they were showing what was possible but none of it was too engaging. Products were no longer finished when released (Batman Arkham Knight was removed from Steam) and everything became online multiplayer with no solo player experience.

So far I have not encountered any game that made me want to buy a new console, there has been no "this is it" game. The only ones I wold like to play would probably be the latest Tomb Raider and Witcher game. Though Dishonoured is one of my all time favourite games so the sequel itnerests me greatly.

I have been personally playing A Linke Between Worlds, Majora's Mask and Mario&Luigi Partners in Time, which are all excellent.

No Man's Sky: the Hype, the Reality, the Disappointment

PostPosted: Thu Oct 20, 2016 1:10 pm
by no-one
Will, I pretty much agree with everything you said about modern gaming. I haven't really been hyped for a game in a long time, still not. No Man's Sky was probably one of if not the first "current gen" I bought for the PS4.

I wouldn't ever say I had early tickets to the hype train departing for No Man's Sky, but I was interested from the moment I saw it. I've learned a long time ago to not get too excited or set my expectation too high. I also like to go into games with as little info as possible. I normally only buy games after they are discounted some time after launch and I may skim a review or two or just check the aggregate scores just to make sure it isn't broken. NMS was a game I wanted to play while others were playing, before every secret was out there to be seen. Well now it doesn't really seem to matter how long I would have waited to pick it up. I may have waited if it wasn't for the Amazon prime discount on new pre orders.

So I went into NMS pretty blind other than I knew the general premise: explore, gather resources, build stuff, go to the center. I was aware of the launch week negative press but I was enjoying the game for what it was and not for what it wasn't. My expectations were low and actually met.

A guy I worked with let the internet ruin the game for him, I let the game slowly chip away at me and ruin it for itself. Yes, the game is overall a disappointment.

So the initial positives. One of the first things that struck me were just how hands off the game was. There is a tutorial but it's well played and doesn't beat you over the head. In fact the game is fine with just leaving you alone forever. There are subtle reminders to get you going, but there was never a huge arrow telling me exactly where to go and exactly what to do like most games. I find most games will not let you veer off the tutorial path at all, so in that regards; mad props NMS.

Really NMS is a game of firsts. The first time you do everything you feel great. The game starts off at a crawl with you ship busses but ramps up very quickly. The scope and size of the game is mind numbing at first. You stumble around your first area trying to get a handle on things and understand all the info that is never explained. The planet seems so big,you feel like you wonder for miles, that is until you fix your ship and you can see just how little area you've actually covered. I went into space as soon as I could and I was blow away by the size of the planets and the real time it would take me to get to the very near by space station. Hours of real time. I still needed to repair my pulse drive and hyper drive, so back to the surface I went. Hours turn to seconds and then you open the galactic map. There are an unlimited amount of bright dots, each with a solar system at least as big as you are. I just sat there in awe as I tried to scoop my brain back into my skull.

Awe unfortunately and quickly turns into repetition. With what seems like an infinite universe its amazing how little there is to actually do. Let's not even talk about how slow and annoying the journey to the center is. I'm still 160k light years away. In the meantime what is there to do in NMS. We'll other than the two quests the game gives you, it's all up to you. All or none of it can be done. Learn alien languages and lore; upgrade your ship, exosuit or multitool. I got a good enough ship and tool and maxed my suit and felt that was good enough. I finished the atlas quest and got a post-it note explanation of weeks of work. And that's one of my biggest complaints. The most interesting things happening are only ever explained via text. All this mysterious and wonder sci-fi things are happening to you or maybe only ever in your mind, but you get to see none of it. Hell I created star and was only told it happened then booted aimlessly back into space.

So what was once praised is now chastised. When I realized I was just going to keep seeing the same things and there was no benefit to upgrades or learning languages I wanted something else to do. I enjoy a good grind but damn getting to the center takes too long. At this point I'm just a fuel harvestor. I warp as far as I can, make more fuel, rinse and repeat. That got boring even with using worm holes (which randomly break very expensive upgrades).

I took a few weeks off from NMS and I got back in last weekend. Surely at the center is just a little text blurb and nothing else, but I do enjoy the game play. So I ended up where I began. I started anew and set my own destination. Now I'm Space Man Spiff, trading my way to a fully upgraded ship. When I'm done with that, I'll work on my multitool. The most important thing is that I'm enjoying the game again, I have purpose. I'm remembering to stop, enjoy the view and smell the space flowers ;)^

Is No Man's Sky a great game or a terrible game? A little bit of both and somewhere in between. There are some truly memorable moments to be had but most will walk away wanting more.

@ Will and @ Cary

Try Bloodbourne and Doom - Doom is legitimate, pure adrenaline fueled fun, having played the first 2-3 levels, I'd buy a ps4 to play it, and I don't often buy games (the last one being Dynasty Warriors 8 XL and Pokemon Sapphire 2 years ago) Definitely recommend both or just Doom ;)^

Hellsef, is that the new doom or the '93 version? The OG is pretty fun and I kicked 3 around a bit. I'm not much of a FPS guy.

I've been eye balling Bloodbourne but I got burned out on the Souls series. You're the salesman now, sell it to me [-(

Meh, I didn't enjoy bloodbourne, if you're burned out on that play-style, you won't enjoy bloodbourne - despite it being a quality game.

Doom is the newest version, and is such a fun and well made game, I didn't want to stop playing and I'm not much of an fps gamer either. I legitimately enjoyed the challenge it presented me and even includes easter egg things from the first Doom game (like locations and stuff) the maps are huge, and the game play is fair yet challenging - buy it ;)^
