Welcome to the latest episode of the Seibertron.com Twincast / Podcast! This episode harkens back to days long past as it features your host Counterpunch along with Razorclaw quadruple zeroes and Tiiigertraackk. Our trio discusses a few of the latest news topics, but then delves into some places and questions that will challenge current and long time fans to really establish their ground rules for some of the Transformers long taken for granted history, abilities, and more. Who's right? Who's not? Is everyone wrong and you're right? We welcome your respectful and disrespectful discourse afterward in the thread.

Episode #197 "Alpha Lyin' and Liege Factimo" is available directly and in our RSS Feed, and should appear on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher Radio within 24 to 48 hours of when you see this news post.

In the first 1/3 of the show the crew talks recent news. At first we rattle on about the recent in-hand images of the Transformers Movie Studio Series toys, that fans are finding them in stores.... and our current feelings for the line based on the new images ( nobody on the show had any experience of their own with them yet).

At that point we delve into the sad news for all toy collectors: all US Toys R' Us Stores are closing and the experiences that we've had with TRU recently, including during the liquidation sales starting. Will this change our buying habits? Are we broken up about it? Hmmm...

Image

The final news pieces we discuss was this planet-sized bomb shell dropped by IDW onto current TF comic fiction fans... and it's not just the fact that Alex Milne can draw a kick @$$ Unicron..

Image

And now to the really fun stuff....

Think about what you think the correct answer is to these questions...and then take us to task on our responses...

1.) Transformers have been at war for over 4 million years our time, according to records. Does that make them really bad at war, really good at war, or serving a larger purpose to the galaxy/universe as a whole?

2.) What should everyone consider to be canon? What do you consider to be canon? Can everyone have their own official canon? Or do you just pull an Ultra Magnus and, "...not deal with that now...?"

3.) Why don't more Transformers change alt-modes more often? Do they not have the ability? Does it take to much energy? Is it...TABOO!? ...wear out your t-cog? Let us know are you functionist in your thinking, or do you think everyone is alt mode exempt as long as it's not effecting someone else's happiness? Okay that really doesn't have to do with changing alt mode forms more often, generally...

Image

4.) What are the possibilities that a Transformer has with it's mechanical components (keep it clean)? When they create or grow weapons in themselves (like missiles, arm cannons) and then use them is this painful, and life-threatening due to shooting your own life at another Transformer (your energy) to possible make them lose more of theirs? And where do fire-breathing Transformers create the fire that they use at will? Especially when being on a planet with not much carbon-life. What's the limit on Brainstorm's and Ironfist's endless experiments with 'super weaponry'? Why aren't all the Decepticons dead from 'glass gas induced structural failure'?

Image

As you can imagine these questions led to some pretty fun conversations. Counterpunch put us through the ringer with this one, but what we'd really like to hear is what you think about these topics that maybe you never really took the time to think about before. Because maybe you didn't care...

...but we cared enough to try, and we think you should too! After you've listened to the episode, yes we throw in just a couple of bragging rights at the end, please tell us your ideas and feel free to tell us about what we managed to forget.

I had a great time on vacation! The tweet with tons of cussing because the end of DB Super was spoiled for me was the result of a lot of beer but wasn't really as angry as it reads.

Cybertron/Galaxy Force is its own thing while also being a sequel to Superlink/Energon. I'm literally ok with both and both can be canon.

In my head canon, any character from any universe can easily just be shoved right into it thanks to the colony planets.

All the Beast Hunters/etc comics work well with the Prime TV show, even going so far as to have Magnus leave leading into his TV appearance - possibly even as a nod to LSotW. For those comics, Counterpunch was right about them and Razorclaw and Tigertrack are wrong about them.

Slightly expanding on Prime, RiD is a true sequel set decades later (to me) and that Grimlock is just another robot named Grimlock.

I thought that I said that they were a Prime Beast Hunters tie-in, explaining what Shockwave was doing before becoming a part of the show. Oh well, right is right, and wrong is wrong.

People sick of Bay's stuff aren't "hater's", their taste in Transformers has just evolved since 10 years ago.

Besides Bay has clearly given TF fans and moviegoers the middle finger via his overall take of this franchise anyway.

*************************************************************************

With TRU my heart goes out to the thousands who will be losing their jobs...... BUT! As one of the Podcasters had mentioned I'd been skipping TRU when on the hunt for new figures because of the price gouging games they played with Generations figures that you might as well buy online sooner. TR prices last year weren't too bad. But the CW's and T30's were all grabbed elsewhere.

If I recall KB use to do the same thing with their prices which is why my heart never skipped a beat when they finally went belly up.

**************************************************************************

IDW and Unicron.....Well I'm only disappointed about LL concluding. I'm leery about Unicron because IDW sucks when it comes to Combiners and Titan's, so how will they handle and Transforming planet that eats other planets especially with that Hasbro-verse crossover crap that only compromised the enjoyment of Transformers in general.

I think Roberts purposely left a few arcs open so that they can be revisited and concluded years later the same way Simon Furman did with Marvel's Transformers.

Scott's last 5 or 6 issues of TAOO were good but other than that I'm all for a reboot. Bring back the war between Bot's and Con's, keep things centered around Cybertron and show less humans!

Agree with you on the focus being Cybertron, bots vs. cons, and less humans. I know many enjoy the part humans play, but it's been overdone in the past to the point of asking where are the robots.

I'm sad that I feel like so much of what I enjoy about Transformers fiction is steeped in the IDW run. im leery about having to start again.

I am way behind in Podcasts, but I wanted ro get into the questions:

1) in the precursor Novel to the first Movie (Ghosts of Yesterday) there is a suggedtion planted that Star Trek esque Warp Speed, Star Wars Hyperdrives, or even the Space Bridges of the Unicron Trilogy aren't a thing, abd that the Bots and Cons are cross ing space in more or less conventional means. The fact that two Cybertronian ships get to cross paths at all in the Inky Black is probably cause for Celebration.

It also suggests that the Cybertronian War is more or less a "Cold War". And not a war of active dogfights and ship-to-ship. Both factions are largely nomadic, although I woukd suspect that certainly there are cases of Autobot teams tailing Decepticons who have done less than moral things.

To my mind, this creates a sumituation where fighting the War is less about the War, and more about "Well, this is just what we do when Autobots meet Decepticons." Its almost a culture to the Cybertronians. They fight beczuse thats what they do, because at this point the Bots hate the Cons, the Cons hate the Bots, and neither side is willing to leave the other in peace. They are a culture of conflict, and in that way the war becomes a self perpetuating thing. To be "Bad" at war implies an ineptitude and on a grand scale I dont think you can apply that to either faction, in any continuity. On the other hand, to be "Good" at war would suggest anbefficnecy in killing your foes or reaching a solution/treaty. And that by and large doesnt happen either.

My own personal storybook land, the first line is "The war is over, everyone lost." Even if the Autobots kill Megatron, there are enough Starscreams in the army who will take over their units, if not try to take over the whole Army. At best, a new head takes over the Cons. At worst, the Decepticon army disintegrates into embers on the wind, sometimes burning out, othertimes setti g off large blazes on whatever worlds they end up on, when not under the strict control of Megatron. Meanwhile, the Autobots have only a dead, broken Cybertron and a reputarion as being the other half of the fighting. Who won?

2) Canon is a tricky thing, at its most broad terms Canon is everything that has happened with the Intellectual Property Owner's blessing and control. (Hasbro). But it breaks down into tiers: you have your basic always true facts (Prime is leader of the Autobots, Megatron is Leader of the Decepticons, and even if you dont use them you acknowledge that it is their legacies) but then you get ibto the individual continuities and whats true for Beast Wars is not true for Animated, even thoughbthey draw from the same source material. However, within those Continuities, you have a rulebook that everything else thatvis informed by snd informs the other stories within. Thats Canon, but it stillbhas to have the IP Holder's rubber stamp, or its just a pretty story. Simon Furman could pen a comic story, but if Hasbro says "um, no we're not including that", its just a Transformers story.

As to whether or not everyone can have their own, it depends on context. If you sre taljing about the Hasbro stuff, no. "Canon" is the offical doings. The minute you start cherrypicking the things you do and do not want, you have created a new continuity. But there's nothing wrong with doing so, as long as you accept that its your interpretation and not the Hasbro approved story. But if ypu are like me, who is Fanficcing on their head or actually writing stories or making up reasons for cwrtain toys on certain shelves, then yes, ypu can make your own Canon for yourself to play in.

3.) Based on some stuff tossed out in the IDW stories, I would assume its a couple of diffwrent things. Trying to rebuikd a Cybertronian body is probably a physically taxing and energy consuming process, considering its likely nanobots analogous to our Antibodies trying to make the alterations. However, I believe personally, that Functionism was born from a simpler truth: you cant change what are. Someone who turns into a boat will always have to scan a boat. If you are forged as a vehicle with special hardware like aircraft turbines, your alt kode must utlize the capability. Otherwide you end upbwith a car with boat engines sticking out the back, or a plane with a big asd drill bit for the fuselage nose, or a Sports Car eith Tank Treads, etc. A quadripedal Beastformer will always be a quadripedal beast, big guys are big, small guys are small, etc. Anything else, and your body becomes unfamiliar, uncomfortable, a case of phantom limbs or growing pains, or you end upbwith unutilized vestigal parts in the alt mode that can make passibg for a vehicle hard or the vehicle itself undrivable (say a car with pontoons) coincidentally, multiformers have trouble with aquiring passable altmodes because one mode has to resolve a use for the parts of the other. Guys like Sixshot end up with underrealistic alt modes because of the excess Kibble, and when they do find something that works across all modes, scanning something new may end up undoing the harmony between designs.if that makes sense.

No fanrage, just some choice quotes from the session (which was super fun, great company on a long run this morning, and really bizarre to not have all the regular voices but all the pre-regular voices).

'Deconstructicons, merge into FANBOYNERDRAGE.' -- Counterpunch

'The rest of the galaxy is just like, "Look at that barbarism over here". Not John Barber of course.' -- Razorclaw0000

'Changing your alt-mode is like changing your username on Twitter. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, and when you do everybody stops recognising who you are.' -- Razorclaw0000

'If you can be Starscream, you should be Armada Starscream' -- Counterpunch

---

Shared universe, at this stage, is pretty much a given that will close down (as it already is doing, only one open is the Visionaries mini, ending next month). Joe took MASK with it. Rom and Micronauts will reach issue 5 as a mini. GI Joe RAH will probably continue doing its own thing, even just out of spite.

In fact, I'd confidently wager that the IDW Hasbroverse in its current form (marketing, sales, execution, narrative, etc) is one of the factors for the end of the IDW Hasbroverse.

A reboot, however, might achieve what they wanted to do, starting with all the properties already coexisting organically.

---

For canon, I'll repeat what I said to Scotty and Counterpunch on Twitter once: the notion of canon is a phallogocentric framework of archiving and curating knowledge from an elitist perspective.

I'm essentially saying I agree with Tigertrack, but wanted to expectorate in a pretentious manner. :-P

Responding to Razorclaw's point about 'what about the loose ends?' - that's what fanfiction (/art) is for! And I cannot agree on authorial intent trumping all. Especially if the intent is one that can change in time (see Furman on gender in IDW, for example), or one that creators will cling to for no real reason other than sell their product elsewhere (totally not looking at Super Fun Robot Con and their BotCon That Never Was 'news').

---

Last note: Beast Hunters comic was definitely a TF Prime tie-in: look at the title of the comic itself.

I approve of every response in this thread... most especially those that agree with me, which are few, I know.

Flashwave - your responses are most welcome. I love how you really interact with the podcasters via the threads. You always give me a lot to think about after the fact, and I rarely have found the time to properly respond to your thoughts.

Va'al - there you go again using words that I don't know, and will need to look up. I used to feel well-educated.

I really enjoyed this episode!

War - it's not really about being good/bad at war, it's about being overly symmetric at war. Think WWI - if everyone is playing the trench game, no one is winning. It takes H.G. Wells foresight to think up a tank-like contraption to break the stalemate. Most of what happens in this war - from the cartoons to the comics - is about moving the ball forward in a symmetric way, or creating a war-ending asymmetry. Without a Brainstorm's brief case + time travel type scenario, it's hard to get to the end.

Reboot - I really don't mind the reboot. The problem I've had with Roberts is not that he's written himself into a corner, but that he's said what he's had to say. In other words, there isn't anything new happening; the first season was ground breaking for being so novel, but LL seems like pure retread, at least from the perspective of his character work.

While it's true we haven't had an expansive character moment (Nautica comes close and Getaway's devolvement into a monster is one of a kind I suppose), the story IS slowly threading things together that need closure.

LL is not groundbreaking when compared to the whole of MtMtE, but it's seemingly better in retrospect as you have the opportunity to read the stories in series rather than by issue.

We will have to have a real discussion of it in whole upon conclusion.

This was a very good episode. I had lots of responses when I listened, but now I can't remember.

The alt-mode debate is very interesting. I pretty much agree with Flashwave. I think, in the 2007 movie at least, Bumblebee was easily able to change alt modes from the 70's Camaro to the new Camaro because they were relatively the same thing. I think if they transform into a car of a particular size, they can really only have forms that are about the same size. Bumblebee couldn't turn into a giant motorhome, even though that is still a wheeled vehicle. It's just too big of a form for him.

As for what is Canon and what isn't.. There's so many different iterations of Transformers and each iteration has it's unique things. IE Matrix of Leadership vs Creation Matrix, etc. I'm really one to pick and choose and pretty much make up my own canon. As long as the series I'm watching maintains continuity with itself, I'm ok with it.

I have a question for the podcast-crew. It’s about the comics and since Scotty wasn’t there to share his opinion on the ‘idw-hard reboot’ last time, I would like to make a suggestion on last episodes ‘how much have we seen of the millions of years of war’ discussion. Maybe it’s the next decade of comics since Hasbro announced the new ‘war for Cybertron’ take on things? I love MTMTE /Lost Light, but I never got into the flow of RID/Optimus except for the flashbacks (Marcelo Matere). My question is; what if those flashbacks were a “protoform” for the new run? After all the characters and gimmicks us Geewunners wanted a new version of and the movie-verse out of the way, maybe it’s time for another era of undefined cybertronian vehicle alt-modes and just cool looking robots. (And please no more humans because they f*ck-up every good and bad Transformers story!)

This is something I wish that I had thought of this. Very interesting idea. I'm not sure I agree that they were intentionally using that as a test, they've had pre-war Cybertron stuff long before, that was popular, although the toys were much maligned where there were some (those related to the games). I do think that people were very fond of long agos DW War Within stuff, which lacked toys minus the die cast simplified toys - which weren't received well, but we're all that we had-.

I don't have anything to add to the conversation aside from saying I just listened to it and the last thing I expected was a figma Luka tuna reference.
