WARNING: What you're about to see may result in death by your heart exploding with joy.

Viz Media has attained the licence for all of the original Sailor Moon anime, AND for the new Sailor Moon Crystal anime. The old anime is getting resubtitled and fully redubbed in ENGLISH! For DVD, Blu-Ray, and Digital release!

Crystal will likewise get the same sub/dub treatment

No mommy-who-do-some-immoral-things way!

Does that mean we will have AAAAAALLLLLLL the Sailor Moon episodes AND movies, with at least as a good DVD quality? UNCENSORED AND UNCUT? With professional and decent voice acting?

It's been years and years since I never bought any anime with my own money. THIS time, I will. That poor quality fansub DVDs that I bought waaaaay back will FINALLY be replace by some officail product! I'm rerally, really looking forward to this release. Sure, this thread is pretty much a zombie with only 2 or 3 members lurking, but Sabrblade, I'm counting on you to keep me updated.

Thanks for all the info! :APPLAUSE:

I made a correction above. I had posted the wrong images for the comparison between the 2003 U.S. DVDs, the 2009 Japanese DVDs, and the upcoming Blu-Rays, showing only the 2003 U.S. DVD image for all three. They're fixed now.

In other news, Viz was asked on Twitter about what they'll do for Canada since Hulu is U.S.-only:
@VIZMedia Any news for Canadians? We can't use your streami g service and do not get Hulu. :-(

@OcassionalVlog we're actually hoping that our sempai @ytv might give us a call about broadcast

That ain't the extent of it - http://www.wewantserena.com/saying-no-to-the-other-name.html

The sad thing is that she isn't trolling. This is how she genuinely thinks about the Sailor Moon series.

Though, I wouldn't rope in too many of the old dub's fans in with her since she's really a one-of-a-kind. Having conversed with her online for a few years (as civilly as I could be) before she left the board I was on, it must be stated that there are really none others like her.

For the love of sanity, NO ONES CLICK THAT LINK. This would give way too much attention than she deserves. Beside, 5 posts on that matter is more than enough.

Let's ignore the nutjob and return to celebrating Viz and Sailor Moon, shall we?

You know, I will admit I have some fond memories of the dub of Classic and R. Yeah, I know how bad it is, but Sailor Moon was my gateway anime. So it's a good kind of bad. S and SuperS on the other hand...

VIZ MEDIA ACQUIRES NORTH AMERICAN RIGHTS FOR SAILOR MOON ANIME FRANCHISE

North America's Leading Anime Distributor Gains Digital, Streaming And Home Media Rights For Legendary Anime

Free Streaming Episodes Debut Today Exclusively On Neon Alley And Hulu!

San Francisco, CA, May 19, 2014 – Viz Media, LLC (Viz Media), the largest distributor and licensor of manga and anime in North America, is proud to announce the acquisition of the SAILOR MOON anime franchise. Viz Media's North American rights cover digital streaming, EST (Electronic Sell Through) and all home media products in the U.S. and Canada. Tokyo-based Toei Animation Co., Ltd. is the producer and global licensor for the SAILOR MOON anime property.

As part of the new agreement, Viz Media has licensed all 200 episodes of the original SAILOR MOON anime series (rated ‘TV-PG’), including the never before licensed for North America fifth and final climatic season, “Sailor Stars.” The three feature films and additional specials for the long-running show are also part of the acquisition. SAILOR MOON will be presented digitally for the first time, with subtitled EST sets available starting Summer 2014 and dubbed editions late 2014, and DVD and deluxe limited edition Blu-ray/DVD combo packs are planned for Fall 2014. The uncut and uncensored Viz Media release of SAILOR MOON, featuring its original uncropped 4:3 aspect ratio, will also feature all original Japanese names, story elements and relationships, as well as an all-new, uncut English dub with a new voice cast.

Viz Media will premiere SAILOR MOON Episodes 1-4 (subbed) today on its free NeonAlley.com anime streaming destination and also via the subscription-based Hulu Plus in High Definition. Two new SAILOR MOON episodes will premiere every Monday. Visit http://www.NeonAlley.com and Hulu.com/sailormoon for more information; the trailer may also be viewed at http://www.hulu.com/watch/635233 and http://youtu.be/RWPyM9afQ-w.

Viz Media has also acquired the new SAILOR MOON CRYSTAL, and more details are forthcoming.

“We're pleased to partner with Viz Media to bring the beloved SAILOR MOON anime series back to North America,” says Masayuki Endo, General Manager, Toei Animation, Inc. “This fresh uncut and uncensored release of SAILOR MOON featuring the most accurate adaptation available will be just as creator Naoko Takeuchi intended. We look forward to fans current and new discovering and falling in love with this classic series all over again!”

SAILOR MOON is one of the extremely rare breed of anime series truly deserving of the title of ‘Legendary’,” says Charlene Ingram, Viz Media Senior Manager, Animation Marketing. “Since its initial debut in the mid-1990's, SAILOR MOON has been unavailable to English-speaking fans for nearly a decade. It has also never seen a complete and proper unedited release in North America...until now!”

SAILOR MOON was groundbreaking in the way its storyline and main characters resonated with both a male and female audience, and these aspects continue to attract a new generation of fans eager to see this iconic series,” says Brian Ige, Viz Media Vice President of Animation. “We're thrilled to be able to release this empowering action title uncut and in its entirety. We invite fans to catch the official premieres on Neon Alley and to enjoy the series on DVD and Blu-ray later this year!”

Viz Media will be celebrating SAILOR MOON at the 2014 Anime Expo, taking place July 3rd–6th at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, CA. Now celebrating its 23nd consecutive year, Anime Expo is sponsored by the SPJA and is the nation's largest anime convention. Viz Media will host a variety of special activities and panels throughout “Sailor Moon Day,” on Saturday July 5th. More details forthcoming.

The smash hit SAILOR MOON anime series is inspired by the bestselling manga (graphic novel) series created by Naoko Takeuchi (published in North America by Kodansha). In the series, Usagi Tsukino is a clumsy but kindhearted teenage girl who transforms into the powerful guardian of love and justice, Sailor Moon. Meeting allies along the way who share similar fates, Usagi and her team of planetary Sailor Guardians fight to protect the universe from forces of evil and total annihilation!

Naoko Takeuchi was born on March 14. She is a Pisces and A blood type. In 1986 Takeuchi made her debut with the manga LOVE CALL. Her hits include Sailor Moon, Codename: Sailor V, and The Cherry Project.

I have completed my notes for the Hulu stream Viz subtitles of all four episodes!

Before you read them, though, note that this is not, I repeat NOT a list of criticisms or complaints, but a list of neutral observations that merely caught my attention and made from an objective point of view. There are even some praises hidden within these notices.

Here the are:

Sailor Moon Hulu stream/Viz subtitle Observations – Oddities, Errors, and Other Notices

Episode 1

Hulu titles the episode “The Crybaby: Usagi's Beautiful Transformation”

The lyrics to “Moonlight Densetsu” are unsubbed.

Viz’s subs title the episode “The Crybaby Usagi’s Beautiful Transformation”

“Mama” is subbed as “Mom”.

The sign outside the school is subbed as “JUBAN PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL”.

“Tsukino-san” is subbed as just “Tsukino”.

“Maboroshi no Ginzuishou” is subbed as “Legendary Silver Crystal”.

“Shihaisha” is subbed as “great ruler”

“Youma” is subbed as “Monster”, with an uppercase M.

The sign for the Juban-chō Shopping District is subbed as “Juban District”.

“Lucky!” is subbed as “score!”

“Papa” is subbed as “Dad”.

“Odango atama” is subbed as “bun-head”.

The sign outside the Tsukino house that lists the names of all four of its residents is subbed instead as “TSUKINO RESIDENCE”.

“Present” is subbed as “gift”.

“Senshi” is subbed as “Guardian”.

When Morga is choking Naru, her use of “Mama” is instead subbed as “Mother”. After which it switches back to “Mom”.

“Ai to seigi no… sailor fuku bishoujo senshi… Sailor Moon!” is subbed as “I’m the pretty guardian… who fights for love and for justice… I am Sailor Moon!”

“Tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo!” is subbed as “In the name of the Moon, you will be punished!”

Luna’s use of the word “Youma” is subbed as “monster” with a lowercase M.

“Kaibutsu” is also subbed as “monster”.

The lyrics to “Heart Moving” are unsubbed.

Not sub-related, but I just realized that I never noticed that there was a cityscape in the background of this end credits sequence this whole time.

In the next-episode preview, “Seigi no mikata” (meaning “ally of justice”) is subbed as “superhero”.

“Uranai House” (meaning “House of Fortune”, “Fortune House”, “Fortune-Telling House”, etc.) is subbed as “Fortune Teller”.

“Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon” is subbed as “Next time on Sailor Moon”.

The subs title the next episode “Punishment Awaits: The House of Fortune is The Monster Mansion”.

The closing tagline is subbed as “The moonlight is a messenger of love.”

Episode 2

Hulu titles the episode “Punishment Awaits: the House of Fortune Is the Monster Mansion”

The pre-episode segment is moved from before the theme song to after it, just like what was done for the ADV DVDs.

“Kono Sailor Moon ga tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo” is subbed as “I am Sailor Moon. In the name of the moon, you will be punished!”

Usagi’s pre-title card introductory segment is subbed “I’m Usagi Tsukino, and I’m a 14-year-old middle school student. I’m a Cancer with blood type O. My birth stone is a pearl, and… I’m a bit of a klutz. I also tend to cry a lot… One day, this strange black cat named Luna appeared… and turned me into a guardian in a sailor uniform… and told me I had to fight bad guys! Boy, does that ever makes me really nervous! But I’m sure it’ll all work out fine!” (yes, the "does that ever makes me really nervous" typo is there in the subs)

Viz’s subs title the episode “I Will Punish You! The House of Fortune is the Monster Mansion”.

The second name Haruna-sensei calls roll for is subbed as “Kenji Ohta” and the fourth one she calls is subbed as “Yuji Kimura” (ADV subbed them as “Kenji Oota” and “Yuuji Kimura”).

The diary in Umino’s fantasy about dating Usagi is subbed as “SECRET DIARY”, and the “Mama” and “Papa” on the backs of the silhouetted Ikuko and Kenji also seen in his fantasy are subbed as “MOTHER FATHER”.

“Uranai Game” is subbed as “fortune telling game”.

The heart logo on Umino’s game is subbed as “Happy Couple”

“Uranai House” is subbed as “House of Fortune”.

Naru’s use of “Jubangai” is subbed as “Juban District”.

The alley fortune teller’s use of “Jubangai” is subbed as “10th avenue”.

The logo on the Uranai House is subbed as “HOUSE OF FORTUNE”

“Motoki-oniisan” is subbed as just “Motoki”.

Usagi’s use of “Jubangai” is subbed as “Juban District” again.

After Mamoru leaves, Usagi’s use of “Mou” is subbed as “Cripes” instead of its usual “Jeez” translation.

Yuji’s use of “Sensei” is omitted from the subs of his line of dialogue.

“Sailor Moon henshin yo,” is subbed as “Time to transform into Sailor Moon.”

“Moon Prism Power, Make Up!” does not have a comma in the subs this time, whereas it did have one last episode.

Balm’s name is subbed as “Baum” (ADV subbed her name as “Bam”).

Umino’s use of “Haruna-sensei” is subbed as “Ms. Haruna”.

In the next-episode preview, the subs title the next episode “The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness, Protect the Girls in Love.”

Episode 3

Hulu titles the episode “The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness: Protect the Girls in Love”

In the pre-episode preview, what was subbed as an “Abominable snowman!” joke by ADV is subbed here as an “And this isn’t a crosswalk!” joke.

“Kono Sailor Moon ga tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo” is subbed as “I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the Moon, you will be punished!”

Usagi’s pre-title card introductory segment is subbed “I’m Usagi Tsukino, and I’m a 14-year-old middle school student. I’m a Cancer and a blood type of O. My birthstone is a pearl. And I’m a bit of a klutz. And some people might say I’m a little emotional. One day, this strange black cat named Luna appeared and turned me into a guardian in a sailor uniform and told me I had to fight bad guys! Boy, does that ever make me nervous! But I’m sure it’ll all work out fine!”

Viz’s subs title the episode “The Mysterious Sleeping Sickness, Protect the Girls in Love”

Jadeite’s use of “Queen Beryl-sama” is omitted from the subs of his line of dialogue about everything going according to plan but needing more time to assure his success.

Flau’s name is subbed as “Furau” (ADV subbed her name as “Flowa”).

Haruna’s pen name is subbed as “Haruna the Dreamer”.

“Jubangai” is subbed as just “Juban”.

Jadeite’s radio alias is subbed as “J. Daito” (ADV subbed it as “J-Dite”).

FM No.10 is subbed as “FM Ten”.

Luna’s yelling “USAGI!” is subbed as “Usagi Tsukino!”

Kenji’s newspaper headings are not subbed.

Ikuko’s use of “Papa” towards Kenji is subbed as “dear”.

Usagi’s uses of both “Sensei” and “Haruna-sensei” are subbed as “Ms. Haruna”.

“Lucky!” is subbed as “Lucky for me!”

Umino’s use of “Haruna-sensei” is subbed as “Miss Haruna”.

A different use of “Lucky” got subbed as “lucked out”.

“Neko-chan” is subbed as “kitty”.

Naru’s and Umino’s simultaneous “Dōshite?!” (“Why?!”) is subbed as “What?! You’re jealous?!”

When Usagi is sent away from the radio station by the guard, FM No. 10 is first subbed as “FM Number Ten” and then again as “FM Ten” back in Usagi’s room.

The name of Haruna-sensei’s love letter that was read on the radio earlier is subbed as “Haruna in Love”.

Luna’s other yelling of “USAGI!” is again subbed as “Usagi Tsukino!”

The Hensō Pen is not named in the subs as its name won’t actually be spoken onscreen until episode 52.

Like last episode, “Moon Prism Power, Make Up!” is subbed without the comma it had in episode 1’s subs.

“Ai to seigi no sailor fuku bishoujo senshi … Sailor Moon!” is subbed as “The pretty guardian who fights for love and for justice… I am Sailor Moon!”

Like in the pre-episode segment, the ADV-subbed “abominable snowman” joke is subbed here as a “crosswalk” joke.

The Juban-chō Shopping District sign is not subbed.

Haruna-sensei’s use of “Tsukino-san!” at the end of the episode is subbed as “Usagi!” instead of just “Tsukino” like in episode 1.

In the next-episode preview, “nikuman” is subbed as “pork bun”.

The subs title the next episode “Learn How To Be Skinny From Usagi.”

Episode 4

Hulu titles this episode “Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi”

In the pre-episode preview, “Kono Sailor Moon ga tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo” is subbed as “I am Sailor Moon, and in the name of the Moon, you will be punished!” (same as last episode)

Usagi’s pre-title card introductory segment is subbed the same as it was last episode.

Viz’s subs title the episode “Learn How to be Skinny From Usagi”

Usagi’s scream is subbed as “What?”

“Haruna” is subbed as “Ms. Haruna”.

The gym’s name is subbed as “Shaperin” (ADV subbed it a “Shapely”).

The name of the actress in the promotional video for the gym is subbed as “Rie Goto” (ADV subbed her name as “Rie Gotou”).

“Shape Kōsen” is subbed as “Shape Ray”.

The sign above the door to the spa where Usagi is is subbed “SPA ROOM”

“Nikuman” is subbed as “pork bun” (ADV subbed it as “dumpling”).

“Onii-san” is subbed as just “Motoki”.

“Nice Catch” is subbed as “Good Catch”

“Ai to seigi no… sailor fuku bishoujo senshi… Sailor Moon… Tsuki ni kawatte oshiokiyo!” is subbed as “I am the pretty guardian… Who fights for love and for justice… I am Sailor Moon… and in the name of the Moon, you will be punished!”

The video for this Viz release has finally corrected the technical error that has existed in all previous versions (to my knowledge) of this episode! When Sailor Moon goes for the third enemy and dodges the weight he swings at her, the glitch that originally played a split-second of stock footage from Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence in the middle of this part for no good reason is cut out! However, the result of this is imperfect since it makes it look like the guy swinging the weight halts his motion mid-swing for that split-second before continuing the swing’s full range of motion after his quick pause. So it’s not exactly something that could be fixed with perfection.

“Chance!” is subbed as “Now!”

“Thank you!” is subbed as “Thanks, mom!”

In the next-episode preview, the subs title the next episode “Scent Of A Monster: Chanella Will Steal Your Love.” Even though this very same preview subs the pets’ name as “Chanela” (one L) in the parts before the title is spoken.

For those curious on the availability of the old DiC dub, beyond the simple " It's just not available," given here, this is from the latest Answerman Q&A with Justin Sevakis - http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2014-05-23/.74748

John asks:

With both NISA re-releasing Card Captor Sakura, and Viz re-releasing Sailor Moon, we're getting a bunch of classic magical girl shows on Blu-ray! But neither company managed to get the old dubs that aired on American television, which a lot of people remember fondly. Will we ever see these old dubs again, or are they just lost forever?

I don't know that they're lost forever, but they're certainly not going to resurface anytime soon.

A little background... It's hard to imagine today, but back in the 90s communication with Japan was anything but easy or cheap. Email wasn't common until the VERY late 90s (especially in Japanese companies), and forget about sending audio and video online. The only way to communicate was to call, send faxes (at very high international phone rates) or send something by international post. So, in the anime business, once a show got licensed to an American company, the Japanese licensor really couldn't do much to supervise the adaptation process.

Today, of course, is a much different story. Producers expect (and receive) a huge amount of control over the US packaging, dub scripts, casting, and everything else. But back in the 90s, the companies got away with just about anything. Usually things went fine, and sometimes permission was asked before anything too crazy was attempted. But quite often, the American company just went ahead and did things, and the producers of the show wouldn't find out about it until it was too late. A lot of shows were altered quite a bit during this period -- Sailor Moon and Card Captor Sakura among them -- but we can only guess as to what was authorized and what wasn't.

Another problem is that while Japanese copyright law and the entertainment system over there is supposed to let the original creators of a show sign off on creative decisions and otherwise maintain control over their creations, that often didn't happen back in the 90s. The publisher of the original work, acting as their agent, would just take care of things, and the creator wouldn't even be consulted. This was especially an issue with shoujo manga and female manga artists. Flash forward to today, and if those artists are now powerful and successful, then you can bet they're going to be a lot more controlling of their work... and probably are not willing to keep approving the existence of versions they never liked.

When a show gets licensed rescued, the licensor often doesn't even have the rights to the adapted version (especially if the company doing the adaptation before was a big company like DIC or Nelvana). A new company rescuing a show like that would have to track down the rights to the adapted show separately. But even if they did, the licensor would have to OK its use. If the licensor is embarrassed over what happened before, or the creator was frustrated that their show got heavily adapted, there is no way they'd OK a re-release of it.

Frankly, the only reason we're getting so many re-releases of 90s dubs is because a show is so old that often nobody in Japan cares anymore.

The science behind the old dubs is really interesting. BTW, just to own a piece of History, I bought a random VHS of the old DIC dub years ago. I never played it, but if I have the desire to cringe real hard, I have it... err... forgot I don't own a VCR anymore. I'd have to track one down.

We now have an official alternative to watching Sailor Moon Crystal on just Nico Nico Douga:

https://twitter.com/debaoki/status/470335584775319552
News! @Crunchyroll will be airing sailor Moon crystal on July 4 at 3:00 am PDT, new episodes on Fri. #fanime pic.twitter.com/4lsaQJoiwH

.@fredjfrancis just so there's no confusion, Sailor Moon Crystal will *also* be simulcast on Hulu, @neonalley & @VIZMedia anime

Though, do note that the airdate in that image is actually a typo, as Crunchyroll will be airing the episode on July 5 at 6am EST (as will Hulu, apparently) - https://twitter.com/lugiamania/status/470341676784173057
CORRECTION: Sailor Moon Crystal airs July 5 at 3am PDT on @Crunchyroll ! I goofed and said July 4 in the Fanime panel.

Shida Naotoshi is working on Sailor Moon Crystal layouts. If ever there was a reason to watch this series, it's this one.

Naotoshi Shida is the guy responsible for animating the fight scenes all featured in this compilation:
