02: SS-06 Starscream (2007)
After painting the rest of the 2007 Decepticon cast, I wanted to update my paint work on Starscream! This turned into a total repaint where I focused on not only robot mode accuracy but also a real-world F-22 deco for alt mode!
- Robot Mode -
Starting with the same gray base coat as alt mode (more on that in a minute), I added gunmetal details throughout for the inner structure, and some gold and red based on movie screenshots as well as my prior work on ROTF Starscream. I found that not all the details were identical though, particularly with the placement of gold details. Similar to techniques I used on Brawl, I used the darker shades of gray from alt mode to highlight different portions of robot mode and add more detail. For the missile launcher, I repainted most of the structure with a new gunmetal base with gray and gold detailing, and silver for the blade portions (acrylic and not enamel this time, so the paint actually sticks!). The paint on the missiles held up nicely, so I decided to keep it.
- Alt Mode -
With the goal of an accurate F-22 mode, I tried to find the right base coat to use. The original isn't bad, but I wanted to replace the original camo pattern with the blue-gray fade. I realized that the dark aircraft gray I had been hanging onto for years for TIE Fighters was a nice match! With that in place, I repainted the lighter trim around the wings, intakes, and tail. I kept many of the details from my original iteration, but added more based on reference images! I also added my own asymmetrical camo pattern with a slightly darker gray to get more accurate to the actual fighter.
