I believe it's entirely possible that designers like Evan may not even be exposed enough to the brand itself in their positions. They may be told "design this" and that's what they do - they design it. They probably get reference images from other media their designs are supposed to represent, but that doesn't necessarily mean they know the story behind the media or the characters they're working on. That job probably belongs to someone else on the team who specializes in that - you probably wouldn't want that guy actually designing Transformers figures like asking the designers and engineers to write stories
This comes from my experience as a professional number-cruncher and researcher who feeds the results of my work to other people who can use it better than I can for what the organization does.
I don't have any PR experience, and I don't mind that. That can be pretty scary, and there's also a department in my organization that specializes in that so that no one else has to.
This applies to every career, skill, and talent: If it were so easy,
everyone would be doing it!
