My thoughts exactly. I really want a US Thundercracker since the Takara version had some issues.
As for Grimlock, I'm pleased for the people who held off for one reason or another. He's a cool figure and may just pick up a US version so I'll have one to diplay in each mode.
Going forward, I question whether I'll jump at future Takara releases. In nearly all cases, both versions are available at the same time-the online retailers still have the Takara versions available at the time of the US release. I'll probably hold off and then compare the differences before choosing which way to go.

I want the mold, but just wouldn't bit the bullet and order it with hopes of a stateside release.
Now I just have to find the damn thing! Same with Skywarp. I never managed to find Starscream, but I will get Warp.

I'm sorry, but stuff like this really bothers me. These toys are made in the SAME factories, by the same people. Just because TakaraTomy is footing the bill, instead of Hasbro, does not mysteriously increase the quality or reduce errors. TakaraTomy is not some magical entity that creates perfect toys.

I don't want to pick on this, but it's a bigoted misconception with a holier-than-thou attitude that I'm just tired of.

woah man! bigoted?
far from it! im basing my statement on facts. i own the orignal MP skywarp AND the walmart starscream. now, screamer is of good quality the skywarp is superior. plastic durability, paint aps, the non dumbed down sharp points. they all are better. i have also heard the same about the new MP walmart skywarp.
i also own several henkei versions of classics figs that share these same positives.
now hopefully i will be wrong about Grimlock but i had to throw out MY opinion based on MY experiences.
i in no way tried to convey a "holier than tho attitude"

I do believe a perfectly valid question is this: "Will the Hasbro release have all the details of the Takara version?" Will it have chrome teeth or painted? Metal or plastic toes? Will the claws on the T-rex arms be as pointy. There's nothing wrong with asking that question. Given past history, it's possible that some of these things won't be the same.
and one note on quality.. I don't think that anyone can argue that Takara/Tomy's Encore G1 Prime isn't vastly superior to the G1 Prime Hasbro released last year...

I own essentially every Classics & Henkei figure.
While Henkei figures often have superior paint application or color choice, the materials they use to produce the toys is exactly the same.
There are no quality differences.
I also own every Masterpiece figure and their US counterparts.
There are NO quality differences between comparible figures. The US Starscream and Japanese Starscream are made from the same materials with the same production quality. (The safety differences about sharp points put aside as those don't have anything to do with quality)
There is a difference between ANY version of Starscream and Skywarp. All versions of Starscream, US and Japanese, appear to use a less dense plastic when compared to Skywarp.
Build/Construction/Plastic quality is always the same, the toys are made in the same places with the same molds.
Paint apps and color choices are always suspect and the superior version often depends on the eye of the beholder.

my experiences may differ from others and may also include my own personal opinion.
i try to keep my posts unbiased and honest based on facts as well as sharing my own experiences. and i do so by respecting others opinions and w/o attacking anyone else and hurling insulting labels.
i can only say i hope such a wonderful mold isnt done any injustice w/ inferior quality control, plastic, or paint apps. hes an amazing figure and i would hate to see that happen.

Hopefully it looks just as good as the Takara version. I'm really hoping for a Target exclusive, as they are easier to find than Walmart exclusives for me. We'll see. My guess is it'll be Walmart since both Starscream and Skywarp have been.
Damn you Rc13...now I have to buy both ...I was kicking myself for JUST ordering the takara, for 3x the price(??)

I think it's safe to say the dino-claws will differ at the very least...I can't see them being that sharp from Hasbro. But I agree, whatever the minor differences, I can't imagine they'll be worth $100 difference. It's good that people will be able to get him at a reasonable price now, but I don't feel too good about having paid $160 after shipping. I too will probably just wait the next time around...especially if the price-point is going to be $150 for the Takara release. Grimlock just wasn't worth that.
Wonder if Black Convoy will get a US release? My luck they'd change the insignia and make it Nemesis Prime so I'd have to buy it again...

Don't give them ideas!
Personally I was suprised we didn't see MP-Megas painted purple and his name changed to something starting with "G", he is (so far) the only MP toy not to have been re-painted...
Posted by Autobot032 on October 22nd, 2009 @ 11:18am CDT
$60.00 for Grimmy? Not a bad price. I can deal with that. Clearly worth that.
Just not double that...and then some.

Optimal_Z wrote:SWEET!!!!! Hopefully it's a Walmart exclusive, so it keeps the price tag of $49.99.
I seriously doubt MP Grimlock will be that cheap (not that $50 is cheap for a ultra-class toy as OP SS was). Since I bet Hasbro knows it'll make a killing on MP Grimlock, I'm sure he'll cost the same or nearly the same as MP OP.

^^ This.
Anyone thinking this will be $50 is dreaming. $69 at a minimum. I'd hope they'd do what they did with 20th OP and have it at all chains and not an exclusive of any sort. But if any, I'd vote for Target. =)
Posted by Autobot032 on October 22nd, 2009 @ 11:39am CDT
I sincerely doubt he'll be $70.00
I think we'll see him for about $60.00
Oh, and he's predominately plastic, I think only a few pieces are made die cast (thankfully), which will keep the costs down as well.
Posted by Counterpunch on October 22nd, 2009 @ 11:56am CDT
If you think they're afriad to hit that price point, please reference RotF Devastator.

Ha! Not that the scalpers won't be all over both this and US MP Skywarp.
Posted by kirbenvost on October 22nd, 2009 @ 12:33pm CDT
As long as the scalpers don't get them all, like they did with MP Skywarp... showed up in several Walmarts in the area, down to half stock by the end of the first day, and sold out halfway through the second. Jerks buying 3 or 4 at a time, to sell on eBay.
On the price point: MP Skywarp was just at Canadian Walmarts for $59.92, which puts the US price tag at $49. I'd say there's a good chance they'd do the same for Grimlock, but they might charge a little more due to inflation or slightly bigger size or whatnot. Considering the seekers use at least as much plastic for the stand and such, I can't see why they would need to charge significantly more.

Okay, and, this may seem stupid, but the US Masterpieces have retained all the Die-Cast pieces of the Takara versions, and all the gimmicks right? They just dont have as many paint apps?

Starscream/Skywarp had completely different paint apps, and no sticker sheet, as they didn't need them.
Quality and feature-wise, they've been exactly the same, and aside from DVD Prime the paint apps have been just as good, only different. However, the Hasbro ones have also been modified for safety reasons. Short smokestacks on Prime, and less pointed parts on the Seekers.

I really doubt it. Wal-Marts seem to get the Masterpiece figures, so I really doubt that's going to change as it has worked well for all parties involved(they usually sell out in a day).
I think it would have been surprising if Grimlock wasn't released in the States...this is a guranteed retail hit for Hasbro.
Odd how MP SS retailed for $50 (the correct price for that figure, IMO), Warpie will be about $60, from what I understand? And here, we are predicting Grimlock will be at least $60, probably $70, and $80 isn't out of the question.
And this is in a span of a couple years with an economy that became progressively worse as these figures became more expensive.
There's some sort of social commentary that probably can be wrung out of that, but what is is, the hell I know. I'm just still smarting over paying another $30 for a Powerglide who should have been red the whole time.
If I would have known I would become such a slave to TFs, I would have stuck to my M.A.S.K. action figures back in '84(by the way, funny parody of the latter on Robot Chicken, if you've never seen).
Anywho, I'm predicting about $69.99 for Grimlock.
