While the Platinum Dinobots set is still unavailable in the US, it has been available in other territories for a while, including Canada. It is even on sale at the time of writing this article at 100$ cdn (75$ US) at its exclusive retailer Toysrus. While it is unavailable online, there are still several boxes found in stores scanning the same discount (even if the price tag has not been changed).

Since I bought one set and had some problems with it, I wished to make a quick review on some points regarding this set going through each dinobot. Images of this Generations set, like the one below, can be found here.

Transformers News: Written Review of Generations Platinum Dinobots Set (classic heads): Deco and QC issues breakdow

The main difference is the inclusion of the new classic styled G1 heads and that all five Dinobots being there at once (Slog had to be ordered off Amazon to complete the SDCC set) but there are other deco differences. In general, this Platinum Generations Dinobot set has less colour than the SDCC set except for the first one I will mention.

Slog:

Platinum Slog's arms aren't chrome. Also, the neck on SDCC's is slightly painted, this version is all clear with a fully painted head. However, this figure, aside from the head, has the least visible differences from the other G1 deco overall.

Strafe:

No picture has done this new head justice. He actually has a very long crest along his moving well past his head on from the front to the back (with the back being much longer). As for deco, the only paint on his arms is the yellow that appeared on the SDCC version (no green) and the back of the wings have nothing on them aside from the layer of chrome. There are differences in where the paint is applied on the chest where the Generations Platinum version has four dark grey/black triangles painted. What I find funny about the cover art is how toy accurate it is, and even includes the tails curved the same direction (a flaw still not corrected in this release), while the back shows a version of the toy with the tails pointing the right way.

Grimlock:

This toy has some major quality issues. The robot forearms and shoulders split, where the molded halves connect, whenever they ate rotated. This can happen on either side or both (I returned a set for Grimlock and Slug and thus held two versions of each). One of the Grimlocks I had also had silver paint splotches on his red T-Rex heels and had a loose peg which made him unable to keep his robot feet connected to his forearms. As far as a difference with the SDCC version, this Grimlock lacks the red chrome and blue paint on his legs.

Snarl:

Snarl by far has the greatest difference with his SDCC self since all the gold chrome was replaced with standard silver chrome. There is no yellow found on this toy anywhere aside from he cover picture. Speaking of the box, the picture in the back depicts the translucent dino head having a silver streak across it but this is also absent from the final toy. The head is just clear plastic with red eyes.

Slug:

Slug also has no yellow or gold on him aside for his painted eyes. However, he does have the only tinted chrome on any of these dinobots, which is the blue on the dino's front legs, though the shade of blue will be different on any toy. I had one which had light blue on one leg and dark blue on the other. The tail joint is very tight and the plastic connecting the tail to the body is very weak. My first version crack while transforming and eventually fell off.

Transformers News: Written Review of Generations Platinum Dinobots Set (classic heads): Deco and QC issues breakdow

So in general, while the deco is not as good as the SDCC Dinos (aside from Slog) and the quality is questionable on two, the heads are great (especially on Strafe) and the deco is still very nice with all the clear plastic and chromey goodness. We all had a lovely day together and I am overall very happy with this set. However, I did only pay 75$ US for it (plus taxes) and was lucky enough to get a replacement set.

PS: This is who is advertised on the back of the box:

If only we could get real dinobot generations figures, without having to go 3rd party.

Saying that is like beating a dead horse at this point, because this is probably the best they can (and most likely will) give us.

I think they work quite well for Generations Dinos. With the exception to Swoop and Grimlock of course, but we already have a Generations G1 Grimlock, and the new TAV Swoop is a great G1 Swoop homage.

Amen brother. I shelled out the dough for Toyworld Grimshell and Muddy. Very pricey but it's what I'm looking for. Not this stuff.

I wasn't necessarily saying that I don't like them (I do, however, dislike the Grimlock mold. My FOC Grimlock will do). However, I would like to see something better.

I know Decepticon Sunstorm, I didnt take it meaning anything else :) And I feel the same way. The idea here is not that these must be bought on site to finish a classic collection but rather for those who couldnt get the SDCC toys or didnt want to pay the high price tag (like myself).

So this set is two things to me:

1. A barely there placeholder for Classics Dinobots

2. An opportunity to get a whole set of the SDCC Dinos, including Slog, for cheaper and with exclusive heads.

And like I said, these toys might not be the dinos we want but hey are still beautiful looking toys.

Yeah, these Dinobots do look pretty good (except for the aforementioned Grimlock), though I do wish some G1-accurate Dinos were in my price range. And while I hope to pick these up at some point (provided I have extra money and no other things to get), I'm not going to deliberately search them out, as I do already have some Dinobots in my collection (the FOC Grimlock and the AOE Dinobots, minus Slog and Snarl).

To be fair, a truly accurate G1 dino would have a copyright of Hasbro/Takara on them, just like the G1 toys had ;)

It was a joke, Tonto. And I wanst referring to the G1 molds. I said that a Classics Dinobot toy that would truly a homage to G1 would also have that copyright (aka not be a third party).

All the chromed bits are hard plastic (triceratop head, pteranodon wings, stegarausur back). The soft plastic is only on the same few parts that had soft plastic in the original AOE molds, like Slug's horns.

You do know that you can make swoops tails straight with hot hot faucet water. Just hold em in the position you want them and let the hot water run on them for a few minutes.

Well, I suppose there is Masterpiece Grimlock (which I had forgotten last night), which I do plan to get to start a Masterpiece collection, but it wouldn't fit in with any other Dinobots.

I WISH these were just $100 in Canada. It was more like $200. Maybe my Toys R Us was just terrible with their prices.

Slog is only like the Amazon Slog in robot mode. Platinum Slog's arms aren't chrome. Also, the neck on SDCC's is slightly painted, this version is all clear with a fully painted head. There may be more, I don't have both in front of my right now. When you compare the two in-hand you can really tell the difference. I think your milage may vary with that large rubbery piece. My own was HEAVILY deformed because of the way it was jammed into the box. I've had it in Dino mode with a clear elastic around it to try and get it bent the right way for a while now and it's still not fully there. But it's close enough.

IMO, head aside, Swoop is better here than in the SDCC set. True he lacks some paint apps (including the back of the wings), but the red on this version really makes the shadows pop in comparison to SDCC's. Just add some Autobot stickers to complete the look and you're set.

I got mine. A little wear on the corners, but otherwise the outside box was in decent shape. It's not necessarily collector condition, but if I wanted a pristine outside box, I would have paid extra to get him from BBTS.

I've never owned Trypticon. I gotta say, for such a big guy with a simple transformation, he is a lot of fun to play with so far. I had him out last night with my son watching the football game. Good times!

Got my Blaster/Perceptor set in yesterday. Will's news post from November is a great reference, and I won't go into gory detail on what he already has in regards to "how is this set different from previous releases." That'll just be summarized. That said, I've got some info to share to expand on the previously shared information.

So for Blaster, we've got:
  • Same darker/brown/tannish color with a slight metal flake/sparkle to the legs as found on SDCC 2010 release. Vintage and Takara TF Collection reissue have a color closer to silver or gray.
  • New copyright tampos, molded stamping same as SDCC 2010 release.

For Perceptor:
  • Completely neutered missile firing mechanism.
  • New slide accessories.
  • Pre-applied stickers that are identical to TRU Commemorative release. These differ from vintage and TF Collection reissues in that the silver backing is highly reflective, as opposed to the more matte silver of the vintage stickers.

Cassettes get weird, like cassettes do. The variations range from super minor (Ramhorn) to nonsense level ridiculous (Eject). How about a chart for these three, yes?
Image

Yes, that bottom-right-most cell is correct. This Platinum Edition Eject has a tampo, and you've seen it before, but never on Eject. It's Ratbat's. Platinum Eject:
Image

And here's SDCC 2009 Ratbat from the site galleries (though this is a sticker, you'll get the point):
Image
Transformers Universe - Classics 2.0 Ratbat (Reissue) Gallery

Lastly, a note on Platinum Steeljaw's weapons. They actually have the chrome stop to allow for a nice, smooth connection to the body of the tape. This is awesome! Here's one pictured next to a Platinum Ramhorn weapon:
Image
Which as you can see, this same feature disappointingly doesn't carry over to Ramhorn's weapons. I can't find myself lamenting Eject's guns being all chrome, since like most versions of the mold they don't stay in all that well anyhow.

So hope that helps any cassette collectors still on the fence with this one. There is one real, actual variant in here in Eject. Can't believe it took it being "in hand" for me to catch that!

Thanks a bunch Scotty, both for the compliment and the extra info. I don't own Ratbat so I didnt know, what a totally odd but awesome variant here! What I find odd is how this blaster reissue is so close to the SDCC 2010 one. It really seems to have been the basis for this reissue and yet, they throw in Ratbat's detail as tampos?!

One thing I wanted to point out while I am in this thread (I had already told Scotty but I dont think I mentioned it here), it seems like thes platinums have the trend of keeping the old school embossed copyright marks, like writing Takara 1986 or such, and writing the updated copyright information (i.e. TOMY (since TOMY owns Takara)) as a stamp.

BUT the platinum coneheads no longer have their old embossed copyrights. Instead, while they still have a stamp, they have NEW indents where their old embossed copyrights used to be which writes TOMY instead of Takara (the accompnying japanese characters are also gone). So, and scotty please correct me if I am wrong, this would indicate that a lot more clean up was done on this mold giving Hasbro/TOMY an opportunity to even change the embossed copyright markings.

Sorry for the necropost, but it is partially relevant.

OK...so the K-Mart near my home is closing. I don't know when, or how, but they have in stock at least 10 of the Insecticon Platinum sets. Starting at $79.99 (I saw the original postings, and how pretty much everyone rejected this set based on price point, understandably so). But now at 30% off because of the store closing, they are down to $56. Still pricey as many refer back to the set released at TRU that sold for @ $35. But the odd thing is...I look on eBay, and it seems these are selling for anywhere from $25-40. So...who in their right mind would even pay $56 for these? --Because the store is so close to my home (within walking distance) I'm going to check periodically. I would have liked to snatch them up to resell on eBay, but it looks like there is no shortage of them on the secondary market. They would literally have to get to 80% off (selling for $16.00) to be profitable. But I don't see that happening. If they ultimately don't sell by the time the store closes, they will probably get shipped to the only other store in my area, which is a good 20+ miles away.

People who want the exclusive official energon cubes they come with.

o.supreme - I bet the closer you get to their close date, the harder that price will drop. A lot of times they'd rather liquidate than pay the cost of transferring merch. Next time you're there, ask a manager or employee what there final close date is.

Supposedly the final close date is sometime in May. Though the store is currently already about 20% empty. From what I've seen at other K-Marts that close, its usually not that long, but yeah, I'll be watching those Platinum Insecticon sets closely.

Fun fact- I actually worked at this store while going to college in the mid-90's (cant believe it was 20 years ago now!). -The store Manager at the time has since retired, and died like 6 months later 9tragically he was not that old). --Oddly enough I know the current store manager through a completely separate source. But that person is not someone I am close enough to, to get any favors

Word of advise. Just buy for yourself, not to resell. First, the world is overflodded with these and second, will making around 10$ of profit really worth all the trouble? I'd recommend buying two. One to open and play, the other to keep sealed for prosperity. The spare could be used for a trade, a gift, or just to keep as is in your collection.

I agree, the secondary market is already flooded with them. But honestly, of all the G1 toys, I never really liked the Insecticons. If it was the Seekers, or Dinobots, or Autobot cars, or basically ANY G1 besides the Insecticons, I'd get one for myself. But I'll just keep watching
