Fellow Seibertronian Professor Smooth got a hold of Takara's LG 42 Godbomber and was kind enough to give us a written review of his thoughts. This figure has certain flaws which are spelled out in the written review you will find below. It is followed by a snippet of the Alfes gallery for this new figure showing the different compatibility it offers, as well as shots of the base mode, and many other fun shots. Enjoy!

Professor Smooth wrote:Godbomber arrived today and WOW is it one heck of a mixed bag.

The trailer mode looks pretty great. But the baffling way that the cannon attaches means it's always loose. In fact, looseness is something a LOT of this guy suffers from. And that's a shame, because there are a LOT of moving parts to deal with. Parts split, have bits removed and swapped about, then reconnect. And it's hard to get any kind of "leverage" when every joint is about as stable as a strand from a Pull n Peel Twizzler.

The base mode is apparently obligatory, but does nothing of any worth.

The robot mode surprised me in how underwhelming it was. I mean, I get that this is a figure that has to do a LOT (unlike the original) but the Masterpiece-level engineering just serves to highlight some of the major shortcomings of the toy.

God Ginrai looks great, but is INCREDIBLY unbalanced. The combination of extra weight and unreliable joints do the combined mode no favors. A bit like Car Robots' God Fire Convoy in that regard. Only even less stable.

Also, I found out there was a minor manufacturing error with my Super Ginrai that made attaching one of the feet impossible. A bit of minor surgery fixed that issue. And speaking of the feet, this does make the awful feet from Super Ginrai look a bit more tolerable.

I *really* don't like how the wings look in the combined mode. They just sit too high for my taste.

Godbomber set me back about $48. And I definitely feel I got that money's worth. I had a lot of problems with it (more than any TF I can remember buying, in fact) but between this, Legends Fort Max, and MP Star Saber, I've got a pretty nice set of modern Takara Cybertron leaders. Here's hoping for DaiAtlas somewhere down the line.

So we've all seen Godbomber wearing CW/UW limbs - and that's friggin' awesome and amazing. But when are we gonna get those pics of a CW/UW torso wearing his legs?

Are there any ways of getting this for less than the $70 the major US online retailers are asking?

Fly to Tokyo and pick one up for about 50 USD? Even shipping SAL from Amiami cost me 65 USD so my guess is no if you want to shop US.

They promised two more giftsets added to Velocytron and Cybertron. As there's ginrai in one, there's necessary Godbomber in one of the two incoming.

Not necessarily, no. It's obvious, but there's a lot of obvious things Hasbro doesn't seem fit to do. Fact is we just don't know at this point. For all we know we could get a recoloured Sky Shadow as Dai Atlas instead.

Even that's unlikely. The thing sold out nearly everywhere. It was 7,000+ yen on Amazon Japan within a few weeks of pre-orders going up.

Cheers, I already watched that one. Wotafa was being cheeky and hasn't uploaded the combined mode video yet...

I just downloaded the Facebook one and will cast that later to my console.

My actual toy should be waiting for me when I get home in a few hours, after having Vietnamese food with my French friend and Japanese girlfriend in Japan and then a party full of other Japanese women.

Life is good.

It's a shame they never made Energon Optimus inspired Combiner Limbs for the Red Optimus - as then those would be a great complement to this guy.

I like some of the features ; such as the head, the triple cockpit, the Headmaster (in both modes) and the general look of the robot.

CW Nosecone and Alpha Bravo will get you half ;)

On the flipside, I don't really care for the helmet being a separate piece. And am I the only who keeps thinking "don't break it, don't break it" upon watching the transformation? Especially the wings freak me out

On the whole yes, there are a few who've gotten lucky but for the most part, it's a floppy mess. I think it has to do more with the overall design, if you want it I think the figure goes for fairly cheap.

Considering that mold had the Energon Optimus matrix style inner chest, I agree. They could have repainted a helicopter, spaceship (for the submarine) and drill tank and made easy money. A repaint of Galvatron as Energon Megatron would have been great, too.

A pity it seems you can't mount the wings to the upper arms with the Legends version.

I wonder if the final version of Targetmaster Roddy's True Firebolt will be different than the one in the pictures. I won't hold my breath but it'd be nice to see it come to pass even if I'm not personally out to buy him. Speaking of Roddy, still wondering if we've had any shots of the underside of his car mode.

Thanks- just what I wanted to see, although somehow this makes it harder to pull the trigger on buying this. God Ginrai is about the most solid brick ever. I think if I dropped him off the roof, the missile might launch but that's it. The legends version... not so much
I know there's some easy fixes for it, but I hate fiddly transformers. That, and the legends version is missing all of that delicious chrome....

I wasn't thinking about the height so much as the positioning. The original toy, and thus the show design, had them mounted to the shoulders. Sticking them in the back like this does can make them seem especially stubby from certain angles, kinda like cheap dinky costume wings.

Looks good all the same. Who wants to put money down on the time til Takara announces a Legends Fire Guts God Ginrai set?

They were on the backpack/Godbomber's torso, on the toy and the show design. The latter did have them move with the arms at times I believe. Plus, there's alternate configuration with fewer pieces that places the wings on the arms proper.

Looks good all the same. Who wants to put money down on the time til Takara announces a Legends Fire Guts God Ginrai set?

I'd almost say that's a given, if TakaraTomy can justify a set with two Leader Class toys. Anybody remember what that RotF Optimus Prime & Jetfire set went for?

I believe it was 15,000 yen. It sold out almost immediately. I was on vacation when it was released and they were completely gone by the time I returned a week later.

TakaraTomy has had absolutely zero issues with releasing high-dollar figures over the past few years. A Fire Guts giftset wouldn't surprise me. But I still think we'll see an homage to the Masterforce giftset w/ chrome and a few other new paint apps in the near future. Maybe around Christmas.

By the by, I should mention that the side-by-side picture I posted has MF God Ginrai in an alternate transformation. The official one attaches the wings to the backpack and the fists an inch or so up the arms (making both VERY stubby).

Aside from certain misgivings about the toy's visual identity - the wing placement, Ginrai's feet which still look really awkward when combined, the tiny fists in combined mode - there's been quite a few reports about God Ginrai's stability, including this video. He does not look like an appealing toy to me... not to blaspheme, but I actually think I want PMOP more.

That does help a lot, can't believe that timing

Still, it's not just the wings - the whole thing just looks a bit off to me. Not the design itself - God Ginrai has always looked pretty damn awesome. But this toy just seems all over the place and not very aesthetically pleasing. Godbomber on his own seems a lot more fun.
Re: Written Review and More In Hand Images for Legends LG 42 Godbomber (1884948)

It's weird, because GG has the weird feet, stability issues and teeny tiny hands in combined mode, Meanwhile, PMOP is objectively worse in every regard with less articulation (no wrist swivels and no ankle rockers), horrible plastic colour choices and a lot of nasty hollow bits (those forearms...bleuch!). But just because Takara's is better doesn't mean it's good enough.

So as far as official CHUG scale Ginrais/PMOPs go, we're kinda out of luck. I know MakeToys is doing a PMOP/GG if you're OK with the increased price and it being a 3P figure (no need to worry about QC, as MakeToys knocks HasTak into a cocked hat).

Let's be cheeky and assume that any Nucleon Quest redeco will be based on the original TR Powermaster Optimus Prime, as that black redeco was for him, not Ginrai ;)

So I guess the comparisons to ROTF Optimus and Jetfire extend beyond just giftset price XD. There's also fiddliness in the combination.

I would say that the odds of a Nucleon Quest Super Convoy redeco getting labeled as such are actually fairly decent. Takara is still perfectly happy to present black recolors of Optimus Prime as Optimus and not an evil imitator.

Even with the issues I think it manages to look cool, so I'm hoping we get an Apex Bomber release here in the US. We're getting the Legends version of the TR PMOP tooling as "Magnus Prime" after all.

I don't think they'll do a Fire Guts version, didn't it take a loooong time to clear from shelves and online retailers? I never understood how Japan explained Nucleon Quest Optimus Prime since Optimus/Convoy was never a God Master.

Simple: they went with the US fiction as a starting point, and labeled the engine as our Hi-Q. They still named him "Super Convoy" however. As for it "not selling", its companion, the God Ginrai reissue, was ridiculously overproduced, so I'm assuming the Fire Guts one suffered the same fate to a lesser extent.

The Nucleon Quest toy's bio actually brings the US concept of a Powermaster into Japanese continuity as an explanation, saying that to find more energy with which to revitalize the resurrected Cybertron he merged with Hi-Q to become a Powermaster and ventured into a black hole (protected by a special armor coating, to explain his black deco) to get super-energy nucleon (obviously better than the regular old nucleon in the Marvel comics).

And sometimes it is that simple.

As perhaps some companion pieces to the recently revealed MP-39 Sunstreaker and Legends Triggerhappy, Takara seems to have some upcoming products - confirmed by a receipt from Toy Scope and brought to us courtesy of fellow Seibertronian Cyberpath! The Takara Legends line brings us confirmation of Misfire before his American counterpart even gets released; along with Sixshot, Broadside and Doublecross (otherwise known as Twinferno). Of course, we can expect all of these to be redecos and minor retools of the Hasbro products, with Misfire coming with a potentially-new-mold Targetmaster just like Triggerhappy, Kup and Hot Rod before him. And finally, we have MP-12+ Lambor (otherwise known as Sideswipe), giving confirmation that the Animation-Accurate MP+ line is indeed continuing after just Red Alert. Take a look at the receipt below and tell us what you think in the Takara Legends thread below! Or, if you're here for Sideswipe, feel free to peruse and join the MP+ thread instead!

Very important edit: Toy Scope's home page clarified that they made a mistake and that Misfire and Doublecross, surprisingly, share a designation. So below are the two corrections... one of which, once again, might surprise you.

LG51 Targetmaster Doublecross
LG52 Targetmaster Misfire

It also says Targetmaster Doublecross. It was another post on their page.

Good to know that Takara is going to do these. Hopefully, some pictures will come out soon to see if there is a major difference between these and their Hasbro counterparts to warrant the higher cost (especially in the case of Sixshot and Broadside).
