Sounds about right. I was just looking at my TRU receipt from last year. It was July 30th I found Fort Max at the nicer TRU about 15 miles away from my home (as opposed to the not-so--nice one I pass by all the time, but seems to be restocking CoV constantly...) Looks like this weekend might be a good reason to venture out there.

A buddy of mine works at our TRU. We don't get boxsets at ours, but we get Titans!

He messaged me right after stocking it. However, I had to work an outdoor concert all day yesterday. I had my wife get my credit card and go nab it.

I got it! It was the only one!!! :michaelbay:

Additionally: Has anyone found a "proper" way to use Trypticon's hips, or is "the fix" absolutely necessary?

I wouldn't hold your breath for such. SDCC is just a few days away, and we've heard NOTHING of the sort about a special edition of Trypticon for the show. In years past, we've head of the exclusive Titan Class figures weeks in advance.

yeah, it's strange, but also think about it.
What more can you possibly add to this figure (in terms of stickers or paintjob) more than the base version, other than a new fancy box?

Let's face it, Trypticon already has metallic paint, a lot of stickers, and is not missing some crucial accessory, like Fortress missed the sword.

With Metroplex the retail version was almost a big chunk of white plastic, and the SDCC added chrome paint.
Devastator got stickers, a different facesculpt and chromed paint.
Fortress got the sword, a different paintjob and stickers.

Sincerely, with Trypticon I can't see any possibility of paint upgrade (just maybe some chromed bit in the purple part of the shoulder cannons) and the only real "premium" thing they could do is pre-applied stickers.
I don't think they'll add the optional parts that would form the tank, since they didn't it with Metroplex nor Fortress.

Maybe I'm wrong, but so far while in the other titan class toys you could clearly see a range of updates for premium versions, I can't see those in Trypticon.

It's no big loss, but I think some people were hoping for Gigastorm-type release.

Nabbed one of these today at a ToysRus in Arizona. Already got him out and the hips aren't as bad as
Have been reported. Easy to pose, worst QC is the clear chest piece won't stay up, especially with Necro attached

Interesting to get a report of the hips not being as bad as reported. I wonder as this figure becomes more available if we'll get more folks not experiencing the hip issue.

Okay so I got Trypticon...

The hips - The springs were as long as they appeared in the photos of people who had an issue. I didn't bother to see if they caused problems and went to work modifying them right out of the box. Fixing them was easier than I had thought. I was able to take apart the hip, snip the spring, and reassemble it. I didn't have to shave the + piece inside the hip and didn't add cardboard, although I did tape off the ends of the snipped spring with electrical tape. The hips seem to work fine so far. They're slightly loose, but he stands fine.

The chest piece and the tail piece are fine on mine. Both have stayed clipped in place so far.

The stickers - Yikes! So most of his stickers are small fiddly things, so if you enjoy model building you may like this. I probably won't attach most of the stickers because I don't have a steady enough hand to keep them looking horrible and crooked. In my opinion, he really doesn't even need that many stickers anyway, particularly in dino mode. He's pretty colorful and has a detailed sculpt. You may want to attach a few in city mode to give him more flair.

Sadly, it's all not good news. There is a misassembly in one of the hips. The ratchet that allows the legs to point away slightly isn't lined up right so one leg can't sit flush against the body. It's mostly bothersome in ship mode because the whole side platform pops up slightly as a result. I can't even fix it because one of the screws in the piece is deeply recessed and stripped, so I can't take the piece apart. I'm trying to decide if I should go through the aggravation of getting a replacement leg or not.

Overall, if it wasn't for that last issue I'd be pretty happy with Trypty. I really wish Hasbro would stop using ratchet joints unless absolutely necessary, since they keep screwing them up.

Hasbro's Metroplex required an arm assembly...? Maybe Takara will do the same for Trypticon and have the legs ready to go in the box just as they did for Metroplex. :-? :VEHI:

The legs are apart from the figure in the Hasbro box. In fact, they attach to the figure on a sliding piece so you can slide them off and on easily.

I got my Trypticon from the local Toys R Us yesterday (in Deptford, NJ for anyone in the area). I performed a functional test of the hip joints by rotating both of them in each direction several full cycles. I opened them up and found no sign of wear or warping on the plastic. I recommend holding the legs right at the top and applying slight counter torque when rotating them. If you feel a lot of resistance, back the leg against the previous tooth and give a quick flick of the wrist forward. It should clear the next tooth with little strain.

As for other issues, my copy does mildly suffer from previously mentioned problems. The left leg does indeed point outward a little instead of resting flush against the body. His clear chest panel also doesn't tend to stay flush. It doesn't pop open entirely, but the right edge of it sags a bit under the weight of Full-Tilt unless it's pressed in in a very precise manner.

Y'know, I keep forgetting to mention this! My copy has that too (definitely the second one at least; I'm pretty sure the first one did too, but I can't remember for certain). Guess it's just another hip-based ratchet issue to add to the list.

It's absolutely not too big of a deal - it's a very slight issue in spaceship mode, and I keep the dino's hips splayed outward anyway so I don't notice it at all there - but it does mean that one of the sides of his base-mode (the part composed of Tryp's opened-up leg) is getting tilted backward somewhat dramatically. I guess I might risk opening the mechanism and taking a look at some point (I'd theorize you're right, Riddler, that one of the gears is just misaligned during assembly or something), but to be honest I can't really be bothered, so if someone else wants to find out how to do it first, that'd be great!

I got to have a little play with this guy yesterday. And you know what? I was wrong. In hand, this guy is amazing. Insane level of sculpting. Full tilt is a fun little deluxe, although he does need something to break up the purple. Trypticon base mode is awesome, ship mode looks canny decent and can be picked up wthout flopping like Max and dino mode is just so lovable. Maybe in a few years when his price drops, i may pick him up.

Amidst all the negative news we were getting surrounding Titans Return and the Trypticon hip ratchet issue, I thought it would be time for some positive news.

Before release, the biggest complaint people had regarding Trypticon (aside from wanting a more IDW-esque or Aligned universe style) was his size. Only 18", he would be tiny compared to the behemoth that is Metroplex. Well, That 18" number is definitely with a wink and a nudge. I took some pictures for scale, and let me tell you, Trypticon is big. He is chunky, and can definitely throw his weight around against the other city-bot Titans. So without further interruption, take a look at this pics:

Image

Image

So here are the points I noticed:

1. With both bots standing fully straight, Metroplex and Trypticon are nearly eye-to-eye. Lots of people were worried they would not be compatible in terms of size, I can say this is not the case. Very much the same weight-class. What helps the "eye-to-eye" measurement for Trypticon is that his eyes are at the top of his head, while Metroplex's are at the midpoint of his head.

2. Let's talk girth, bulkiness, whatever you want to call it. It's really hard to quantify in pictures, but he looks big. Weight wise, he feels the same as Metroplex, without Full Tilt, take that how you will. But, Trypticon is all torso, which is a good thing for the type of bot he is.

3. Poor Devastator, just by the second picture alone you can tell he is sorely outclassed. In every metric (height, width, weight) he seems to be a distant 3rd. Trypticon is in a different league along with Metroplex and Fort Max.

4. Actual height measurements. As a Recap, we know that, when standing fully straight, Metroplex is 24" tall right? Well, no. 24" is to the top of the Shoulder Tower. He is 23" to the top of the Ear Pipe, and approximately 22" to the top of the helmet. And everyone's favorite Space T-Rex? 20.75" to the top of his head. 21.5" with the Horn-cannon out, and 23" to the top of his cannons. For those keeping track, he is also over 26" Tail to Nose (not including the extendable ramp).

5. So is Space T-Rex smaller than Metro/Max? Yes, but negligibly so. 1.25" separates him from Metroplex. Still well in scale with one another. And, if that's not good enough for some, all it would take is to beg a 3rd Party to make legs that are a little bit longer. It might make the figure cost double, but if that extra 1.25" is that important, he is still going to be the best Trypticon you will own.

Mine is at the post now and I can't wait to get off and pick him up this afternoon. The height nonsense to me is exactly that, nonsense. I don't mind him being a little shorter. He's a giant robot dinosaur! He's vicious! I'm not gonna go up to a tiger and say "I can fight that because I'm taller" no, it's got claws and teeth and crap.

Complaining isn't gonna make him grow 5-6 inches and yeah, their will be half a dozen add on kits that will make him look like he's wearing go-go boots and high heels for $40 but I'm good with how he is already.

Wanting Tryp to be taller than Metroplex isn't a deal breaker but it isn't "Nonsense" either.

Here's hoping that 3P will resolve the height and the hip issue at a reasonable price.

Nope. Doesn't count. It might work if Trypticon was a meerkat instead of a t-rex, but even then they don't fight standing upright.

I'm 6'2" no way would I mess with even a 5' T-Rex,

How did the g1 figs compare, incidentally? Metroplex was shockingly small for a cityformer back in the day. More in Ultra Magnus' range IIRC. But I never had Trypticon. And Devvy's always been presented as much bigger in fiction than the toy scale would have him. >:oP

That's fine, but what person fights standing straight up? That is a horribly unbalanced position for any biped for fighting.

Remember, Trypticon was also an homage to Godzilla as well, who DID stand straight up.

my only criticism is the stickers. my god im probably a third way through and have given up twice. theyre thin and foil stickers and they are awful to apply. the ones in the stomach im not even trying. i tried one and said "nah"

It took 40 minutes and oh man it gets longer and longer to make as more come out. It's every Titan master released from individual to leader and the velocitron set with a ginrai and god bomber(sixshot is off to the side). God knows i said I'll never do it again but with power of the Primes having relatively the same gimmick and scorponok coming it's gonna be a helluva city someday.

I was so close to picking up Trypticon tonight! I called my local TRU right after work and was delighted when I was told, "yeah, we have a couple of them here." I went right to TRU from work, checked both of the Transformers sections (there is a small "movie" section in the front that has some Generations stuff mixed in) and couldn't find Trypticon anywhere! I couldn't even find the price sticker for Trypticon on the shelves. A store manager came up to the customer service desk to help me. She checked and found that they were actually sold out. She maintained that she had seen them earlier in the day. Thankfully, she was nice enough to call up another store in the state with some stock, a process which took about a half hour, and got them to transfer one of their Trypticons to my local store! I should be able to pick it up by Thursday and get 10% off as well with my TRU credit card. I'm willing to wait a few more days for $15 off. :)

Actually I do XD.
The straight up pose is both a reference to classic Godzilla and older T-rex.
Since Trypticon has more a Kaiju mode than a T-rex mode, I prefer it standing like old, goofy Godzilla.
Yay!

Hah, I just noticed this on my Full-Tilt. Does anyone else have 2 right knee caps? I only figured it out now that my figure has this issue. Doesn't really affect anything but the vehicle mode (the left knee won't tab in place).

I needed a "mental day" yesterday (much better today if anyone gives a fuck) and I thought I'd use that time to break Trypticon out of his box (he's been in there for over a month since I got him) and apply the stickers.

Short version ... I felt I was going to need another "mental day". Over 150 fucking stickers. I'm about half way, and you know what? They don't make THAT much of a difference.

I've yet to fully assemble him as it's a LOT easier putting stickers on without his legs. That being said, he's still cumbersome.

Even though I haven't assembled him, my impression is ... meh. He's big, he's clunky. And the size actually may be an issue down the track. His tall AND long, which means for many, finding him space on a shelf is going to be difficult given how much volume he takes up.

For anyone who is one the fence about this guy, let me also put this to you.

What's better? A G1 Trypticon that takes up less space and has motorised walking, or a TR Trypticon that takes up a lot of space and has a little bit of extra articulation and eats Titan Masters?

Because those are the only differing factors.

I also prefer my Trypticon standing straight. It gives him a little more height (not like he needs it though, really) and it just looks more 'right' in my eyes. To each their own of course - if you want your giant-evil-robot-city-dinosaur to be scientifically accurate, go right ahead! :P

mordhelm wrote:Hah, I just noticed this on my Full-Tilt. Does anyone else have 2 right knee caps? I only figured it out now that my figure has this issue. Doesn't really affect anything but the vehicle mode (the left knee won't tab in place).
Both of mine had correct kneecaps, so I guess it's just an individual issue. That is an amusing enough problem to have though, and at least it doesn't affect anything too important. (I actually always forget about those pieces, until I try and transform Tilty into robot mode and wonder why the knees won't go, heheh.)

Burn wrote:For anyone who is one the fence about this guy, let me also put this to you.

This much is true, but it can also be phrased thusly:
"What's better? A G1 Trypticon that's smaller and whose primary draw is a battery-powered walking gimmick, or a TR Trypticon that's imposingly big, more poseable and has a non-intrusive and entertaining 'eating' play feature?"
Words can always be twisted ;)

I totally wouldn't recommend TR Trypticon to people who're trying to fit all their Transformers onto a shelf display(s), but I also wouldn't recommend collecting city-bots in general to those people. I can't really compare the two for certain since I've never experienced G1 Tryp, but I do think TR Trypticon is worth your time and money if you enjoy big lugs and don't absolutely have to fit him onto a shelf or into a tightly-packed display.

What's better? A G1 Trypticon that takes up less space and has motorised walking, or a TR Trypticon that takes up a lot of space and has a little bit of extra articulation and eats Titan Masters?

Because those are the only differing factors.

And even when you put it that way, I'm inclined to still go with G1. (Who I have anyway)

A corner. He sits in a bloody corner, on the floor in case he decides to go flying. I had enough trouble squeezing Metroplex onto the top of the display, I haven't even bothered trying to move Fort Max yet, and the shelves had to be adjusted to accommodate Devastator. These four alone take up a huge chunk of my little Transformers room. Throw in the original city bots, CW Combiners, Primus, Cybertron Supreme Class Starscream and a couple of Unicrons and there's suddenly not much room for anything else! :-P

Ah, but isn't that corner so much better now for the addition of Trypticon? :-P

Trypticon is definitely frustrating if you've got nowhere to put him, I'll give you that. I have my own "big 'bots" display on top of a cupboard, and despite its quite decent front-to-back depth I still dread the process of putting him up there eventually (poor Omega Prime and Landfill both took a fall when I tried to adjust Fort Max at the back of the shelf the other day). For the moment though, I adore him on the floor where he can be played with and posed, with plenty of room for him to do whatever he needs to without danger to himself or others.

Bottom line, if you want a Trypticon to display (especially if space - or structural integrity of the display surface - is any concern), Burn's right that G1 Trypticon is probably your better bet. On the other hand if you want someone to face off against your Gen Metroplex, or a big ol' base to play with, or you just plain want a huge robot dinosaur, TR will not disappoint. (Well, unless it self-destructs; that's always going to be disappointing.)

Have to find a corner for him, surprisingly, I have too many doors in my town house to the point corners are pretty sparse.

aaah that's sad!

Talking about the shelves.
I keep the main part of my collection in a regular shelf, that has enough room to bots big as CW combiner. For the bigger ones, I had to place them across the room in several places XD

For my display situation, my father works at a wooden furniture factory, so a few years back he brought home a bookcase with adjustable shelf floors. A have a random shelf, a Masterpiece shelf, a third-party shelf, and a TR shelf. The bottom shelves are for storage, and the top of the bookcase has my non-TF stuff. Fort Max and the Autobot Headmasters (and Rewind) are over on the computer desk because we had to get rid of our desktop. Probably gonna put Trypticon, the 'Con Headmasters, and the 'Con Targetmasters over there as well once the former shows up.
