Takara has fully revealed what they are calling their MP 48 + Dark Amber Lio Prime figure. It is Black Lio Convoy, and while it is based on a Toysrus Exclusive, this Masterpiece figure will not be exclusive. So you'll be able to order it from Amazon Japan or any collectible online vendor in the west. The SRP is 20000 Yen, so around 150 USD but there will be a further discount from Amazon Japan when it comes around.

As we can see in these new phots, it is a straight redeco. Even the lion mode retains it's more cartoony face.

Okay, I just woke up and saw this news. I am baffled, baffled, about the toy's new name and backstory that not only have nothing to do with Copy Convoy, but also invent a whole new series of events that we've never seen or heard of before that led to the birth of this "Dark Umber/Amber Leo Prime".

Studying this bonkers backstory, here's what I've come up with for how any of it makes sense:

1. First, it refers to Lio Convoy as "Leo Prime", a name the cartoon version of the guy took on after BW Neo during his appearances in Fun Pub's TransTech stories, the Japanese TF: Prime toy bios, and the Legends manga. So this new MP bio would most likely be set at some point after BW Neo.

2. The bio says that this guy was born from residual (as in, leftover or remaining) Angolmois Energy within the Earth (A.K.A. Gaia) converging together and fusing with the "sparkless body of the legendary Green Lion: Leo Prime". The only time Lio Convoy ever turned green was in his original BWII body. But by the time he starts going by "Leo Prime", he acquires several new and different bodies instead. This leads me to suspect that, somehow, he loses his original BWII body and it gets left behind on Gaia before he acquires the first of his new "Leo Prime" bodies.

3. According to this bio, apparently not all of the Angolmois Energy originally found on Gaia was completely sucked out of the planet by Nemesis, so there was some left behind and that is what merged together with Lio Convoy's old body.

In conclusion, the events of this bio are most likely set at some point after BW Neo, wherein Lio Convoy loses his old body on Gaia, upgrades to a new one and goes off to have his multiversal adventures as "Leo Prime". Then some leftover Angolmois Energy reveals itself on Gaia, merges with Lio Convoy's old body, and becomes this new "Dark Umber/Amber Leo Prime" guy.

I know very little about Beast Wars II and even less about Beast Wars Neo, but dammit this figure looks cool. I’ve always loved the design of Lio Convoy, and this deco looks slick.

Dark umber is probably correct, it's the actual name of the brownish color used on his mouth plate and waist among other spots.

Much like the default MP, the animated aesthetic really doesn't mesh well with a Beast Mode. Even if it is supposed to be "accurate".

It's funny, I saw this and only thought how a (somewhat extensive) retool of this mould might make a figure I would actually care about...

Even if he were a one-off, without the rest of Magnaboss. Then I remembered the Takara series did sort of do Magnaboss. So it might not be completely out of the question for the only other Lion Bot to see the light of day again.

So Dark Amber is not an evil clone after all. He's basically a fusion of the legit Lio Convoy and Unicron, reborn together in the former's body as a new merged being.

He has nothing to do at all with the original Copy Convoy from the cartoon.

Well I sure am glad I got him on Amazon Japan when I did. At the time the price didn't show a discount so I thought I'd check back and see if the price changed at all. It did. The wrong way.

And yes, both sold and shipped by Amazon Japan. Usually we see the prices discounted and then hover around that price up until it sells out, not fly back up to MSRP a few days after listing. Noticed the same thing with MPM Blackout, no discount.

At last, we have a full English translation of the Dark Amber Leo Prime comic, courtesy of TFWiki members Star Spangled Sam (who translated it) and MrRald (who lettered the comic translation).

It is the first chapter in a new series titled "The Transformers: End of G1 Universe", set at the very end of the Japanese Generation 1 cartoon timeline.

But first, a bit of backstory.

At the end of Beast Wars Second, the Predacon Emperor of Destruction Galvatron used his final weapon of mass destruction, the Artificial Planet Nemesis, to extract all of the Angolmois Energy (a wonderous energy capable of great power) from within the Planet Gaia (a post-apocalyptic version of Earth in the far future). However, the observation android Artemis (stationed within a base on the moon) used her own power to move the entire moon within Nemesis's way to disrupt the flow of Angolmois Energy enough to prevent the entirety of it from being fully removed from the planet 100%.

The amount of Angolmois Energy that Galvatron had extracted was then absorbed directly into himself, powering him up for a final confrontation with Maximal commander Lio Convoy, who had likewise powered up to a new form known as the "Legendary Green Lion" by combining the powers of his Energon Matrix with that of his son, Lio Junior, which merged the two into the green warrior in the process.

During this final battle, Lio Convoy used his Matrix to contain all of Galvatron's Angolmois Energy into capsules, which he then scattered across the universe. In the aftermath of Galvatron's destruction, Lio Convoy and his team of Maximals got trapped within a wormhole and went missing for a time. During the time, the wormhole ended up sending Lio Convoy all the way back in time to before the destruction of Unicron in 2005 (as seen in TFTM). According the online manga produced for the Japanese Generations Selects toyline, he apparently took the LONG way to get back home to his time in the future many millennia later.

During this long journey of his to get back home, he popped up on Earth in the year 2050 to help G1 Optimus Prime during the Autobots' and Decepticons' final battle on Earth, in which Lio Convoy channeled his green lion form again (this time without Lio Junior) to defeat an out-of-control Megatron Omega (G1 Megatron's most powerful form of all), whose power was running amok so badly that he could have destroyed the whole planet.

So many millennia later, Lio Convoy finally made it back to the future in Beast Wars Neo, resurfacing on the ancient Decepticon colony of Planet Dinosaur, which Unicron had taken a big bite out of back before his destruction in 2005. Lio Convoy met the Maximal crew of Big Convoy and informed them of Unicron's connection to Angolmois Energy, that it was actually his life energy (which the Generations Selects manga would further retcon to have been an evil, corrupted form of Primus's own energy, but I digress).

In the final episode of Beast Wars Neo, Lio Convoy made it back to Cybertron to help Big Convoy defeat the resurrected Unicron once and for all. While Lio Convoy battled Unicron (who had assumed the appearance of Galvatron) in his green form, Big Convoy destroyed the planet-eater for good with his Matrix Buster cannon. In the aftermath of the battle, both Lio Convoy and Big Convoy were offered to become Great Convoys (the leaders of Cybertronian goverment) by the God of Cybertron, Vector Sigma. While Big Convoy declined the offer, Lio Convoy accepted.

After this, Lio Convoy became an elder known as "Great Lio Convoy". He then continued to have adventures in other dimensions across the mutliverse, particularly in the TransTech world of Axiom Nexus (in stories written by Fun Pub for the Transformers Collectors Club), in the Japanese Transformers: Prime toy bios (in which he went by a new name: "Leo Prime"), and finally in the Legends World of the Transformers Legends manga (in which he continued to use his "Leo Prime" name). At the end of Legends, he departed the Legends World to parts unknown, which FINALLY brings us to this new comic.

So much time has passed since the events of Beast Wars Neo. By now, the universe is dying. After many body upgrades across his multiversal travels, Lio Convoy is now back in his original Beast Wars Second lion body, but is still known by his "Leo Prime" name and is thus referred to as such. In fact, it is so far into the future that he is now dead, his body a lifeless corpse, which brings us to where the comic begins:

The whole "Metamorph Code" thing is... interesting. See, where the Maximals and Predacons say "Maximize" and "Terrorize" in the English version of Beast Wars, they instead both say "Henshin" in the Japanese version, "Henshin" being a Japanese word for "Transformation". In this comic, both the English and Japanese transformation codes are used for the first time ever, giving us "Henshin Code: Maximize" and "Henshin Code: Terrorize". And since characters with vehicle modes still say "Transform!" in Japanese series like Beast Wars Second and Car Robots, and say it in contrast to those with beast modes saying "Henshin", "Metamorph" is used here as a translation of "Henshin".

We don't actually know what his name really is. "Untite" is currently just a guess. His name is spelled アンタイト ("Antaito"), but seeing as it's in Katakana rather than Hiragana, it's non-Japanese in origin, so your best guess is as good as any until Sakamoto comes right out and says what his name is supposed to be.

A second comic for Dark Amber Leo Prime, part of the "End of G1 Universe" series, has been posted to TakaraTomy's website. TFWiki member Star Spangled Sam has translated it into English, and MrRald has lettered the comic with Sam's translation.

The tone of part two is also a complete mess. I doubt the translation is to blame. More likely, ala the terrible Japanese Mainframe dub, this "humour" was the intent.

Also, Unicron The Life Giver? Possibly the lamest idea I've seen in Transformers to date.

He both is and isn't Unicron.

And it's rather consistent with what Unicron's power has been shown to be capable of. Back in Transformers: Energon, Alpha Quintesson managed to harness the power of Unicron from his dead body to recreate all of his planets that Unicron had devoured years and years ago. Why did the Japanese arm of HasTak make their version of Transformers lore so ..goofy? Only they could still unironically utilise Primacron...

Japanese continuity was built around the cartoons. To them, whatever the cartoons said was absolute truth. "Call of the Primitives" said Unicron was built by Primacron, so that was an indisputable fact for them. They never had any problem with it because they never had anything that said otherwise. The Marvel comics with their "evil god" backstory for Unicron never came to Japan officially until the 2010s. And Beast Wars Neo even made it a plot point that Japanese Unicron is specifically not a god, with his ultimate goal being that wants to become a god.

It's basically like how, in the UK, the Marvel comics were viewed as the definitive version of the Transformers in the 1980s, since the G1 cartoon was so scarcely broadcasted there.

And it's rather consistent with what Unicron's power has been shown to be capable of. Back in Transformers: Energon, Alpha Quintesson managed to harness the power of Unicron from his dead body to recreate all of his planets that Unicron had devoured years and years ago. Thanks to Seibertronian Sabrblade for alerting us to this second part of the manga for the upcoming Dark Amber Leo Prime figure, due for release in January of next year.

A second comic for Dark Amber Leo Prime, part of the "End of G1 Universe" series, has been posted to TakaraTomy's website. TFWiki member Star Spangled Sam has translated it into English, and MrRald has lettered the comic with Sam's translation.

It is the second part of a two-part story, so if you haven't seen the first comic yet, check it out here first.

Right, the way it was shown in part one, and to some degree here, is that lio convoys mind has some control over unicron's spark. Similar to how unicron controlled galvatron by causing him pain, only here they are in the same body. It is imho a novel take on the whole nemesis prime concept, let alone a neat idea for an anti-hero.

edit: also gotta say I love seeing one of the old beast wars micro playsets getting some love here. I still have that killer whale somewhere.

That was how it was in the Marvel comics. But Japan goes by the cartoon origin for Unicron, in that he was just a giant evil robot built by Primacron instead.

The "Primus vs. Unicron" backstory didn't come about in the comics until 1988, two years after the G1 cartoon's origin for Unicron in the 1986 episode "Call of the Primitives". Cartoon Unicron was never a god, while Comics Unicron was.

Man, I would kill for a Bluebolt figure. Those colors would look great on the actual figure, and that mold deserves a few more uses.

I know! This comic is supposed to sell a dark amber leo prime, but I want a Bluebolt instead! Such a kicking color scheme! I noticed in negative it's a phoenix, which is also a great color scheme for the Airazor mold

Yes! I’m glad I’m not the only one, and a Bluebolt would probably be more in my price range than Dark Leo. On the same note, I wouldn’t mind an Untite figure as well. The Transmetal II Megatron we have coming gives me some hope that we’ll maybe see some more Transmetal rep.
