I think, based on pictures we've seen before, that they collapse further into the shoulder pads to look less awkward.

Seems to be twofold:
The shoulders are pushed down to fit him in the box
AND
Hasbro stock photographers can't transform the toys well
EDIT: Okay I read his publicity blurb on BBTS and it's kind of funny
Courage is Stronger When Combined!
Who is he combining with, Minimus Ambus? I don't know if him sitting inside, having no visible impact on the outward appearance and function of the toy, qualifies as "combining."
The TRANSFORMERS Generations Leader class Ultra Magnus is rendered in incredible detail and with impressive conversions.
INCREDIBLE DETAIL!
IMPRESSIVE CONVERSIONS! (that are more or less the same as all Ultra Magnus toys of this style.)
This large, feature-packed LEADER scale action figure features a firing projectile, massive weaponry and working vehicle features.
Hype to English translation: "working vehicle features"=rolling wheels and a turning cab
Figure converts in 15 or more steps and includes a Collector Card.
15 or more? Why can't you just say how many steps it converts in?
I dunno, I just love marketing speak. Every little detail is the COOLEST EVER and you're a LOSER if you don't have this toy. It amuses me. I'm not saying he isn't an awesome toy, but the blurb kind of oversells him.

Purely design-wise, yes, it's accurate (more or less). But in the comics he has a blue waist and red thighs, rather than all that white.

They probably worded it this way because Hasbro wants people to think of Ultra Magnus and Minimus Ambus as two independent characters. They said one of the reasons why Ambus can't ride inside in truck mode is so it didn't look like Magnus was just a mech suit when in the comic that's exactly what he is.

He has a firing projectile? I thought all four were fake, which one fires?

I'm guessing it depends on if you include Ambus into the mix or not.

The last G1 Ultra Magnus toy that turned from car carrier into red, white, and blue robot (other than the Masterpiece) was the 6" Titanium figure from 2007. That figure was a floppy mess, and the Masterpiece is in a different league of price, intricacy, and aesthetics. There have been a few White Optimus Primes but this is the first time there has been a proper Classics-style Ultra Magnus.

I didn't say G1 Magnus... I said Magnus in general who is a G1 character. And exactly, there's the Masterpiece version, so I'm not sure why this was needed. Utter waste... that leader slot could have been given to somebody else who really could have used the update, like Fortress Maximus or something. Would have rather had that than another Magnus

Not do an entire line dedicated to combiners. Do a subline and keep Generations partially open to doing more updated classics figures. Also, Magnus never use to be a combiner, so they could do any character and turn it into a combiner. IDW is more than likely taking Hasbro's concepts and using them, not the other way around.
And my choice for combiners? Magnaboss, Tripredicus, Ruination, Landfill, Piranacon, and Predaking.

The fact that the Legends class and Leader class figures aren't all combiners (or at all, in the the case of the Leaders) means that they're already doing a line that isn't entirely dedicated to combiners and is partially open to doing more updated classics figures.MartianSpyGirl1996 wrote:Not do an entire line dedicated to combiners. Not in the case of Ultra Magnus and a few others. That design used for the Leader Ultra Magnus toy was created by Alex Milne for the comics back in 2012.MartianSpyGirl1996 wrote:IDW is more than likely taking Hasbro's concepts and using them, not the other way around.

Word up. I'm only reading the collections, so I wasn't sure if this Magnus was based on the 2012 Magnus or some new CW design. While true CW does offer some none-combiners, the bulk of it (deluxes and voyagers) are restricted to that particular gimmick.
The details are arbitrary, really... they're doing another Magnus, and it would be nice to get a figure more deserving of a new update. We've had Animated, Prime, and Masterpiece, and while there's no "worthy" classics version of Magnus (until now), there's been NO update of any kind of Beast Wars Scorponok for example since the McDonald's toy back in 1998... my point is I feel like this was unnecessary, and something else could have taken his spot. Scorponok would be a deluxe probably, and unless Hasbro makes him a combiner (which they could do as I referenced before), he's not getting made anytime soon. He's just an example, but those were all my points I was trying to get at before.

This is the first G1-style Ultra Magnus in a long time that hasn't been prohibitively expensive (Masterpiece) or total garbage (Titanium). There may have been other versions of this character, but none that really had the look of the original toy. Keep in mind that not all of us can justify $200 for a toy. Even the $40-50 for this Ultra Magnus is pretty steep.

UM is already been done. No way but to live with it and hopefully wait for one of those desired characters your desire to be re-invented. Maybe the reason this UM was released may also be due to all the buzz MP UM generated? Just a guess anyway. Bedsides, nearly all G1 inspired figs give Hasbros the glazed look of cash registers ringing.

Magnus still isn't a combiner. He's a little dude inside a suit of armor. Anyway, we've got Leaders and Legends classes for creative non-combiner characters right now, and Generations will go back to representing ALL Generations in 2017. Hopefully then we can get a few more updated Beast Wars guys.

If done extensive. Thinking a IDW MTMTE Roller Tarn toy could be made using the Ultra Magnus Leader class toy.
Like to see a Power Master Optimus toy. But I just don't think it can be done.
Would be disappointed if HasTak just did a Diaclone Powered Convoy repaint. With maybe a new face plate head.

Their emails were full of the usual stuff, 'we apologize for the inconvenience', 'we appreciate your business', 'we regret the delay' along with the 'if you have any questions contact us at _______' form signatures. And of course the obligatory 'we will inform you as soon as the figures ship'. Though they did not say when that might be.
So far, it looks like an indefinite delay, as they admitted that they 'have no idea' when the figures will actually arrive.
A sad day for those of us who expected news that our orders had shipped, and who were looking forward to being able to assemble Menasor at last....

Initially I placed the order for the first ship out 3/27 batch. Then a week later I cancelled it. In favor of getting the Second ship out 4/27 batch. Cancelled the first order because I forgot to enter the Family2015 20% off savings coded. Applied the code on the second order and got 20% off my order.
Another HTS story. Saw Generations Leader class Megatron on the HTS site. Put the item in my cart and entered the check out process. While I was in check out. The item sold out before I could hit the final place order button. Had the chance to get this toy for around $38 after taxes and with free shipping?

I believe he's referring to Dreamwave being the first continuity to show Ultra Magnus as a white Optimus Prime inside armor.
