Evening Seibertronians, tonight we have a pictorial review of Transformers Generations 2016 Platinum Edition: Armada of Cyclonus! This '86 Movie inspired 3-pack includes the Unicron spawned Cyclonus, Scourge, and Decepticon Sweep (sporting a brand new head!). They all hail from the Classics/Universe/Generations era, and have some new competition with Combiner Wars and Titans Return. Has the throne been usurped? Let's scroll and have a look.

Namesake of the set, Cyclonus. Great as always, this time around he is sporting two hands capable of holding weapons (as opposed to the molded close fisted previous versions) and has a gun stolen from Generations Kup. While he doesn't have quite as nice a jet silhouette as the CW Voyager, I still feel he has the better robot mode.

Sweep leader Scourge is the only one completely unchanged (mold wise) in this set. This grudge match is a toss up. On one hand I prefer the wings on this version, but love the classic space boat alt mode of the Titans release.

And finally, Decepticon Sweep. Take Scourge to the barber shop for a hot shave, and what do you get? This fella. This new head sculpt is fresh take on what the Sweep clone army should look like and is a great addition to anyone's Unicron crew.

So what do these figures mean for your collection? Is it out with the old and in with the new, or long live Classics? Or can you still not let go of G1 even (haha wink wink). Let us know, and stay tuned to Seibertron.com: home for the best Galleries and Conversation around!

Monkey Optimus Prime (another version of Beast Machines Primal Prime essentially) had the main problem nearly all those platinum sets have at release - being far to expensive. there is also the issue that you not always sure why some of them exist in the 1st place.

They were awful separately!
Worst versions of both.

If it weren't for the translucent plastics, this set would've been awesome.

Heck I may nab that Cyclonus if I ever see him separately.

I was actually surprised by how much I liked the set. It also looks good with the older eHobby set with the eHobby set in front and these guys in the back.

That's transparent plastic. Translucent would actually be an improvement here.

No. That is in fact translucent.

It's just that translucency can have gradations. Transparency is what happens when its 100% translucent.

A shame about all that clear plastic because the metallic paintjobs on those look gorgeous.

Out of interest, is that Cyclonus mold worth owning? He certainly looks the part but his lack of bicep swivels kinda kills it a little. I'm considering going for the UW Grand Galvatron set at some point and having the Cyclonus from that set.

As for Scourge...hmm. The old "stealth bomber" mold is cool, but in the event that Galvatron AND Cyclonus are Voyagers, Scourge needs not to be the odd one out. Same issue applies to TR Scourge (who IMO isn't that great looking to begin with). Ironically enough I'm actually tempted to throw G1 accuracy out the window and get Energon Dreadwing as my Scourge- he's got similar-ish colours, turns into a space boat and looks awesome.

Yes, Big Time. One of the best TF toys of all time to have an aerial cybertronian alt mode. And it gives you a nice kibble free robot that doesnt even look like he has an alt mode.

But he is not super fun to play with. Those boat shells come off (purposefully) and he is one of the fiddliest Transformers outside of MP 05. Looks great though, I am glad to own him. But I would want an army of him. I find the Generations Scourge to have a good balance of complexity and fun and the alt mode has less visible robot kibble:

Also the weapon storarge on gen Scourge is to die for.

Thanks for the recommendation. Having seen some pics of him looking super dynamic even without the bicep swivels I think I'm convinced. I may very well try and get him, once my living situation is sorted.

That's a shame about Energon Dreadwing. I may still pick him or his mold brother up if I find him for cheap, but I'll avoid paying top dollar (sterling?) for him now. As for Gen Scourge, if I DO get Universe Cyclonus I will almost certainly get him too (whilst TR Scourge is More G1 and has a great "soapdish" mode, his robot mode is kinda lacklustre, and his Hasbro paintjob is just appalling) unless I somehow find a better option, which is highly unlikely.

I do wish that HasTak had done a better job on Scourge though. I actually really like his design, especially the bat wings/cape and that gorgeous spaceship mode. Unfortunately the only toy I've ever seen capture that particular...something about him (specifically the silhouette he had with those magnificent wings) is X-Transbots' MP Scourge attempt, which unfortunately isn't a very good figure. None of the other figures quite get it right- the Titanium is oddly proportioned, the Gen figure is good but quite a radical redesign (though still probably my favourite thus far), the Wings of Honour figures were cool and all (especially for a convention exclusive) but are hard to find and are at the end of the day still just redecos of the (admittedly awesome) Cybertron Sideways figure, and the TR toy, even with the Takara paintjob, is kinda tubby, has the Headmaster gimmick and the wings are somewhat underwhelming. Scourge just seems to be hard to get right.

Yeah the best official Classics-ish Ironhide is probably the Arms Micron in my opinion. Didn't people used to say they should have retooled the Gen Orion Pax as Ironhide? That would have been cool. The club could have done that instead of two mostly white figures.

Yes that would have been cool. I never thought of it and though I dont like redecos too much, I would have been ok with that. It definitely looks like an ironhide body. I have the arms micron and its really not great. They mess up the movie homage by not giving him the Hasbro weapons and they give him a fake chest and a messed up back kibble piece which is really odd when the Cyberverse Ironhide had the same design but didnt have a fake chest. So is mine faulty? Because the original release would let you sink the head down to hide it more in alt mode and it would push down the landing gear so you could use it. But in this version, the landing gear at the back is already low and ready to be unfolded without you needing to push the head down. Does his head even push down?

Also, here are some more pics, including some with light piping!

I was just talking about looks since I don't own either version of the mold. Sounds like most of your gripes involve actually having the figure in hand.

Anyway back to Platinum. I noticed in the toy haul thread you got the Cyclonus Armada set on sale. I hope it goes that low in the states at some point. Those decos do look great.

I wonder why Hasbro didn't consider how much Beast Hunters Wheeljack resembles IDW Rodimus and use that for some sort of gift set as Rodimus - they still have not repainted that version of that mould yet either (Takara version aside).

Seems like an easy thing to do - simply give it a new head and repaint it the proper colour.

Freshly listed this morning, Wal-Mart.ca has listed the Transformers Generations Platinum Edition Autobot Heroes Set at $219.92 CAD (approximately $170 USD). This 1986 Movie inspired set includes beautiful redeco's of Ultra Magnus (CW Leader), Arcee (Generations Deluxe), Springer (Generations Voyager), Kup (Generations Deluxe), and Blurr (Generations Deluxe). History shows us that that a Platinum set being listed at Wal-Mart.ca usually means it will be exclusive there, whereas in the States it is likely to appear in a number of different stores. Also keep in mind this set is in "low stock" but it is known to fluctuate in and out of stock. What do you think of this set, it's deco's, and inherent cost? Well since these are based on the movie which came out before Nightstick I think they just wanted to keep in continuity. That doesn't answer why Minimus is there but does provide a possible reason forr Nightstick's absence.

Because Nightstick is not integral to Cyclonus, he's just an accessory. You wouldnt know you were missing out unless you had him. Minimus is another matter since there is an actual control panel and chair inside Ultra Magnus' chest. Plus, Magnus' head doesnt connect to the bottom, minimus serves as the neck between the Magnus helmet and the chest in terms of the anatomy of the toy's robot mode.

All I really want is that Arcee. And maybe Springer and Ultra Magnus, maybe. I've already got Prime Kup (who's good enough for my purposes) and I don't like that mold as Blurr. Hopefully someone will sell Arcee separately for a sensible price.

This set looks really great. I will most likely be picking this up. That being said I do have a few nitpicks with it. Since they included Minimus Ambus why not repaint him as Daniel in his Exo-suit?

I'm not a huge fan of the Drift mold repainted into Blurr. The new Titans Return Blurr painted like Takara's would have been perfect.

Lastly Arcee didn't get her hand blaster which was in the movie, yet they gave her the IDW swords instead? Also Hasbro seems to have this weird hang up with painting her "bikini bottom" all pink, instead only painting the top half and leaving the bottom white which makes it look more like a belt. This is probably a stock image as I saw Arcee out of package on display at Botcon this year painted as she looks in the movie but the in package figure was presented like she is here. :HEADHURTS:

Two thoughts, both on the same general idea.

1) We've had quite a few Kups by now, why are none of them in animation a curate gray colors?

2) I absolutely hate that Blurr head and have since it was first introduced. Since you're going for a movie accurate Blurr and you're limited to repaints, I would have personally used Cybertron Blurr as the head is dead one. Sure, the vehicle mode is pretty different from movie Blurr but no worse than Generations Blurr is.

When was he ever gray in the movie? He's always been a very pale green. This figure is one of the better representations.

That figure isn't very good though. It's very short, has no leg articulation, and how would you explain away his Cyber Planet key and flight mode? All for what, a better head? Of all the Blurr figures they've made that one is the worst representation.

I like it too, but I dont like it on that Drift body. The body is made to resemble the bulky attire of a samurai which, while Blurr should be sleeker and way less bulky. Plus that body is designed to make use of the doors folded as scabards but him coming with guns makes no use of this cool design.

As for Cybertron Blurr, thats just a retool of Armada Blurr, one of the worst toys I ever held from one of the worst toylines. I rarely sell my toys since I got into collecting but I made an exception with that one. I didnt want that figure in my house.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong; I totally agree - I don't think it fits Blurr at all and I'm almost convinced they made the retool Blurr just because they realised "oh shit we don't have a Blurr toy yet let's use this". I was just saying it about the head design in general rather than on this extremely unfitting body.

I like Ryan's fan transformation for that Blurr that made it look taller and slightly sleeker:

I like the IDW head, but the TR Blurr nailed it, no question. I love that toy. and who knows, by the end of TR we can have a good Blurr, Hot Rod, and maybe Kup and Perceptor to go with Magnus, Springer and Arcee to make a beautiful set

Emerje, I think you need to rewatch. Google it and you'll see what I mean. There is a little inconsistency with colors here and there but he is mainly gray all throughout G1 animation-wise.

Just did, and it's still a shade of teal, it could be confused for gray depending on the lighting/shading, but it's definitely teal.

Yeah, outside of some instances of bad lighting or unremastered/badly-remastered video, Kup has definitely always been a very dull shade of teal green in the cartoon.

Even Takara with their unhealthy obsession with show-accuracy has colored every Kup toy in some kind of green shade.

Some parts are lighter than others but generally there is obvious gray on his head and several other spots.

A tertiary color does not make it his primary color (that'd be the same as saying that since he has orange on him, that he should instead be colored orange), the rest of him is clearly teal-green, and a darker shade of teal-green >:oP
