Our very own jON3.0, whom you might recognise as the Epic Voice Guy and the voice of Honest Trailers, took some time to interview Chris White, the developer lead over at Space Ape Games, in preparation of the soon-to-arrive launch of the Transformers: Earth Wars mobile game. Check out the video embedded below, in which the two chat about the game, its conception, development, the fidelity to the toys in the character designs, and more!

They talk a lot about story and how big it supposedly is that they got Simon Furman involved but the campaign dialog is pretty minimal and doesn't involve any but the most superficial facets of each character's personality.
Similarly they hype up getting the original voice actors where possible, but the reality is the voice work here probably took less than an hour per actor, and that's at a generous estimate. I doubt Frank Welker was sitting in the studio for days on end trying to get the exact right read of "Decepticons, ATTACK!" I mean sure, it's nice to have Cullen and Welker but the interview makes it sound like they had more to do.
Now yes, it would have been a lot more boring to just say "Yeah we made Clash of Clans but with Transformers, and it's still a money trap like the DeNA games" but that's the reality of it. It's fun but it's very much a pick-up-and-play game which hooks you on a fun mechanic and directs you to an ever-moving goalpost, rather than an actual story (contrary to what Hasbro says in their slides).

Speaking of goalposts, I've noticed that the highest level bases in our league are 12. Is that the highest tier or is that just as far as Jon and whoever else have gotten?

That's the limit.

Not like you'll live long enough to be able to afford to level up past that anyway.

Level 12 is the current HQ cap that the latest beta build allows. I can see many updates that require higher HQ lvls though.

It's possible another beta update will raise that cap or we may have to wait for the final build.

Burn did hit the nail on the head though. I think it took me 3 days for the lvl 12 upgrade and my last research facility upgrade took 4 days.

As far as the campaign "story" goes; I'd say it's just the obligatory frame work that a lot of games have to give the player a reason to grind levels. The main game here is just level advancement with a little lite base building.

I've been playing this game for probably 3 months now and I have to say that I don't always get that much gameplay and enjoyment out of $60 "full release" console game. There's not too many games that aren't designed to get your money so I have no problems with the free to play model (someone has to pay the bills).

The game (as is currently) can be played to the fullest without ever spending a dime. I've had peaks and valleys in my enjoyment, but I haven't once felt like I had to dip into my wallet to enjoy the game more.

I've actually grown quite fond of the new structure. The fight time limits and lvl caps have inspired me to be more creative with the way I play the game. I've over leveled in quite a few RPGs before and then lose interest because I have nothing to strive for.

Right now, I'm merrily leveling up all my bots with a few base upgrades here and there. I am quickly approaching the zone 9 medal cap, but that will just give me motivation to prepare for zone 10.

If you're a Transformers fan or fan of the RTS and RPG genres; I'd give this game an easy and hardy recommendation. It's a fun little Transformers toy box that allows you and your friends to make bases and play with Transformers together. At the very worst the game will only cost you a little of your time.

Are you running multiple accounts? Your base that I can visit in-game is level 8.

Oh I know that, it's a way to introduce the mechanics of the game and some of the defenses, as well as get you a few good bots. I have no problem with that, I'm just commenting on how they talked about the story in Jon's interview like it was really involved, and how Hasbro cites SpaceApe, DeNA, and Activision as "Story Partners" when they do presentations at BotCon and SDCC and whatnot even though only Activision's games can be said to have any noteworthy story.

I've been playing this game for probably 3 months now and I have to say that I don't always get that much gameplay and enjoyment out of $60 "full release" console game. I have no problem with free-to-play. It's great. What bothers me is pay-to-win. Although the game is fun, it's set up in such a way you are encouraged to pull out your wallet to advance. I understand that they have to make money, but I'm a believer in building a product that makes people want to pay money because it's good, rather than to thwart a timer. Team Fortress 2 went F2P a few years ago, and that's when I started playing it. It is my go-to model of how to make a F2P game that people want to pay for in a way that doesn't subvert the gameplay experience. You have the same access to everything that paid players have except for a smaller backpack in which to hold acquired items, so you have to discard or craft them sooner. All weapons operate on a balance system: if they are better in one area they'll be worse in another so the best weapon is the one that suits your needs and play style. You can unlock a few by achievements and the rest by random drops, even as a free user, or you can just buy them outright. Money is a substitute for time but not for skill the way it is in most P2W games. And there's also a ton of purely aesthetic accessories you can put on each character which also come via achievement, random drop, or payment. People are happy to pay for these silly things because the game is already fun.
I'm not saying Earth Wars isn't fun, it is or I wouldn't still be playing. But I can't help but to wish it was structured a bit differently.

Yup!

I wouldn't mind seeing the game structured a little different, but I don't think it's all that bad.

I think the only argument you could make that they are approaching the pay to win line is in the alliance match ups. Unlike the rival matches you can be un-fairly matched. As far as the rest of the game goes you can only buy time (if you could buy coins that is). It really doesn't matter how quickly you advance because you'll always be matched up against someone who fits in the current zone you capable of fighting in. Now I've advanced my scanner too quick and got my tail handed to me, but I knew I was risking a lose when I started in zone 9.

One of the things I'd like to see is the ability to have more control over getting new bots, but then I am asking to be able to purchase an advantage. I'm currently sitting at a 25 bot roster and that give me a solid 30 minutes of fighting in one sitting. I complained about the cooldowns at first, but now I need more fuel cells. Go figure...

The other would be having the ability to have more direct control over my attacking bots, but that'd give my enemies the same advantage. I'm enjoying experimenting with my base to abuse the AI.

I don't play very many dedicated mobile games, so this is a somewhat new experience for me. I never play online multiplayer games either; I'm looking at this from a very single player perspective. I like this asyncronous "online lite" game style. It's like playing chess via mail.

I disagree.

I don't know how the Alliance wars are on your beta, but on mine, it's very hard to compete if you're just relying on 1* and 2* bots. Even with a couple of 3*'s it's still tough going. And the only way to get 3* or 4* bots is to dump money, and even then it's more miss than hit.

Yeah, to the fullest may have been a little off. I do feel the alliance wars are a little un-balanced and really kinda dull and just another thing to achieve.

The way they work for us is you sign up for an alliance and you just seemed to get paired pretty randomly against another alliance in your league. There doesn't seems to be any sort of balancing either. Sometimes I can wipe the entire 5 fights in one sitting and sometimes in cannot even best the second flight.

It's a group total high score event. Pretty boring and there is very little reward other than bragging rights for winning a league; 300 sparks for winning the Junkion league.

We Bots have yet to win a league, but the Cons have cleared the Junkion league. Now we need more members to even complete in the next league.

Hopefully they have a ways to go before they finalize the alliance wars. As is I don't fight or sign up for them. I'd rather spend my cells in something more rewarding.

Player Profiles

We’re once again reaching out to our top Autobot and Decepticon players to find out more about their love for Transformers, player background and favourite attack strategies.

Image

In-game name: Kratos
Faction: Autobot
Headquarters Level: 12
Autobots unlocked: 23
Alliance name: TFGU Wreckers

Kratos is ranked at #9 in our top player rankings worldwide with 4,430 medals and is a Defender for one of the top Autobot Alliances "TFGU Wreckers". He has been a fan of the Transformers toys since childhood and despite siding with the Autobots, Barricade was his first Transformers toy and a character he’d love to see added to the game.

Kratos recommends keeping your Gunner behind your Warriors to protect them whilst they deal high damage from a distance. His typical attack strategy is to use his bots to target the most powerful defenses (Missile Launchers, Shock Towers and Beam lasers) so he can easily manoeuvre around the Decepticon base and destroy their Headquarters!

Image

In-game name: MEGATRON
Faction: Decepticon
Headquarters Level: 12
Autobots unlocked: 16
Alliance name: DECEPTICONS

MEGATRON has been playing strategy mobile games for years. He started playing Transformers: Earth Wars shortly after the game was soft launched in Australia and New Zealand, where he saw the potential to build a strong Alliance and described the game as a "new and interesting dynamic to be involved in".

Currently ranked as our top Decepticon Alliance, "DECEPTICONS" have won over 50 Alliance Wars with their Commander MEGATRON. Despite achieving this, the most important aspect of the game to him is the players and his Alliance, where he enjoys working as a team in wars against the Autobots and helping new players.

In comparison to other games he has played, he found the battle system flowed well in Transformers: Earth Wars, such as the drop zone which affects the way you build and design your base and the emphasis that has been put on each bot.

I have five 3-star dudes currently... they've all more or less been random draws. Cary, that son of a glitch, has a 4-star Jazz.

It's true; I am and I do. Jazz is a bad mofo! I'm grinding him as hard as I can to get him to lvl 30 so he can join my A Team of devastation.

I'm also trying to find out when the update that will allow us to upgrade our HQ is going drop.

Right now I'm just bugging the heck out of the devs to get iOS crashing fixed, and to have my data properly synchronized. I have a bunch of 1-stars, a couple 2-stars, and my 3-star Bonecrusher all showing different levels in and out of battles due to the post-battle crashes. It means I won't be able to get Bonecrusher upgraded, because he only shows up as level 28 at the research facility. Yarg!

And we should be able to push past lvl 12 on our HQ in our current build according to SpaceApe. I cannot, so I may have a bug.

Honestly I think its a server side update that hasn't happened yet.

Do you have the option to upgrade to lvl 13?

The server side update pushed out to the Aus/NZ beta. Got our two free 1* bots and the new campaign which is a joke to win.

And Cary, fuck you and your Jazz. :-P Seriously, I had a guy attack me with him and that ability is ridiculously over-powered. I don't think there's even a Decepticon equivalent.

Yeah I wiped the new campaign last week in a single sitting with my new bot mix and match style. Won a dupe 2 star Bee for clearing it

Yeah, Jazz is super over-powered. Even my 2 star is a beast (you don't want to see how gnarly the 4 star one is). His normal attack is tossing grenades like Swindle and Sunstreaker. Jazz and SS are a good combo to wipe stuff out from afar. I'm sure once enough of you Con chumps complain they'll dial Jazzy Jeff down a notch or two.

I do like that Skrapnel/Ciffy are now gunners. They hit all over the place, but it's fun to spray and pray.

I hope they make Silverbolt/TCracker's and EMP bomb Slipstream's Fusion "bomb" a little more useful though. It takes way too much time and effort to get anything out of the fusion bomb.

I'm just happily grinding away and stock-piling resources while waiting for the HQ update to go live.

Are these soft updates or am I going to have to seek out the latest version of the APK? I looked earlier and the one available for download is the one I'm currently running.

Also, I've been wanting some base structure strategy tips. I get that you can't win all your battles on defense, but I figure there's got to be a better configuration than what i've got going on now.

Soft updates. I've got all the new stuff available to me but still running the 4/19 build.

There has been some talk about sharing strategies and I've got quite a few (as well as others). I wonder if that's best for a new thread? Well I'll just puke a few thoughts out here.

Well the way I look at my base is from the point of view of an attacker. So I try and see how I would attack my own base. That change of perspective can help a lot.

Obviously the HQ is the main objective with high damage weapons (beam laser, mortars, missles) being the first thing to take out.

I try and put my HQ as far away as possible with my high priority weapons far away but still useful. I cover those weapons with the laser turrets because they can hit the fliers that will be sent in to destroy the weapons. I'm also using other buildings as walls around my HQ. Just one more thing to slow down would be attackers.

Next I try and put my other weapons close to the front to slowdown the walkers and to hit the fliers when they come back to land. Hopefully the turrets softened them up enough so they drop before getting to take off again.

As far as walls go I was using a honeycomb setup to varying degrees of success, but now I'm using them to direct traffic and funnel the attackers towards the center so all my weapons can fire on them at once. Think tower defense games but now you have to bait the baddies to go where you want them.

I've also found that it is better to put your outposts farther back to delay when your bots pop out. If they jump out too soon they will just get destroyed. I put them in the middle so they start attacking after the baddies have been softened up a bit. They also become the attackers primary target and prevents then from destroying weapons. Use a deployer for defense if you have one. The cassette bots confuse the hell out of the AI.

I've also started using my resource storage as bait as well. They have high HP and don't grant more than one ability point of destroyed. I'd rather the attackers wasting time hitting a storage unit and not my weapons that are currently shooting them in the face. Try not to group weapons too close. Some abilities can target multiple weapons (ask Burn).

Ability points won is another thing to take into account. Almost everything destroyed grants ability points. Form what I can tell this is the value of buildings in ability points:

Builder bots and walls = 0
All weapons = 1
Scanner, harvestor, storage = 1
Space bridge and research facility = 2

I could be off on those totals because it's hard to keep track of while trying to not lose an attack.

Watch defense replays and see what worked and what didn't.

So to recap:

Hide/protect high priority targets

Don't let your enemy farm for ability points

Don't group weapons too close

Use walls for more than just defense

Control traffic, lead the attackers or distract them

Save your defenders for after the enemy has been weakened

Watch replays and learn

Hope that helps ;)^

Thanks for the tips! I don't have any deployers yet, but I have a good smattering of 1 and 2-star bots, 19 total with some duplicates (Bludgeon, Thundercracker, Scavenger). I've got Megatron and Breakdown on defense, currently. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind when I get a chance to overhaul.

Also, I had a question about ability upgrades. Is there an upper limit? Much like level upgrades, they get exponentially more expensive each time, and I'm not sure if level 4 is worth it unless it's the last level.
Speaking of abilities, I've come to dislike the ones that impact your current area. The characters with those abilities trend weaker, and they're usually not in a position where the ability to attack their immediate area is very useful.

That Bot wrote:Thanks for the tips!

NP.

No clue if abilities have a cap. Probably or they are linked to your lvl. I haven't gone past lvl 4 yet because of resource requirements.

If you like the bot and their ability then lvl 4 is totally worth it. Every little bit of firepower helps. The bots like Bee and which ever constructicon where their ability happens at their current location kinda sucks. I find Bee's a little more useful only because he tends to get in the think of things and stunning enemies and running away helps the other bots rake them out.

Fliers are priceless (except the ones with the EMP or fusion bomb). Gunners like Prowl are handy as well. Prowl has high damage but low HP.

There can be strategy in how you deploy your squad as well. I send the tanks like OP and Ironhide out first followers by the fliers then followed by weaker bots like Prowl or Bee. Prowl has the benefit of long range attacks.

I currently have enough bots to make 3 teams. They are all mostly the same with a few minor differnces, but each has a backbone of fliers. I target the high priority weapons then I single one weapon at a time. I try and not let the team get too separated but the AI is horrible. Infuse the leaders ability to regroup my team fairly often. Learn from the folly of your bots and apply that knowledge to your base strategy.

Every once in a while I try a flanking pincher attack by deploying bots on either side, but normally I just evaluate the base and pick the weakest side and dump the entire team in the order listed above.

If you haven't noticed the power lvl of your currently selected team changes color to give you an idea of how likely of their survival. It goes from red (going lose) to yellow (maybe win if your careful) to green (pretty likely to win) to grey (over-powered and will likely sweep it). I want to say there is more than one shade of yellow but I may be off.

Also keep in mind those bots with abilities that can affect multiple targets at once. That's why I love Breakdown & Swindle so much; the long range gunners tend to be versatile.

Targeting the big weapons - like lasers and mortars - with flyers is really key for this game, but more often than not my gunners are the ones who finish the job.

Howdy ladies and gents. The fine folks over at Transformers: Earth Wars just sent me a Grimlock character walk-though with their lead designer.

Grimlock is the leader of the Dinobots, but how will his power and strength perform in battle?

Watch as our Lead Game Designer shares tips and tricks on one of his favorite Transformers characters - a fire breathing, head butting, sword smashing Autobot!

To keep the excitement going the Transformers: Earth Wars YouTube Channel has released another character spotlight video. This time it's the Decepticon bruiser, Brawl. The video highlights the in-game 3D model, transformation and Brawl doing what he does best - cracking the heads of Autobots using a combination of melee attacks, grenades and his special ability.

I have been playing the game for a couple of weeks now in The Netherlands. It's quite good. Just wish there would be more missions.

Everyone who's gonna play the game and will be looking for an alliance: Primus Knights are looking for members.

I installed the new version. Interestingly, both of my Scavengers (I had a 1 and a 2 star) got bumped up a level, so now I have a 2 and a 3 star Scavenger. They tweaked the ship, and the recharge times. Overhauled the strike level of bases, which I like. If my supposedly 1600 power team could take a base that recommended 2400 power, something was up. Not sure yet what all else has changed. Hopefully I can get some of those new bots.

Oh, with the addition of Tantrum, Headstrong, Rampage, and Divebomb, they now have all 5 Predacons in the game. Wonder if we'll see the option to combine into Predaking, and other combiners, soon.

EDIT: Managed to pull Tantrum from the space bridge...... don't tell Hasbro but I'm pretty sure they modeled him after MMC's Bovis.

I compared it to his toy and various fictional depictions and it doesn't resemble them nearly as much as Bovis. SpaceApe, I see what you're playing at.

Howdy fellow Seibertronians, we have some exclusive character art created for Seibertron.com by the Transformers: Earth Wars art team to share with you. They've included a character bio along with the artwork. The inaugural character is none other than everyone's favorite news admin's spirit animal, Alpha Bravo!

Image

Alpha Bravo

Forget speed - that's for others. Alpha Bravo is all about precision and manoeuvrability - his helicopter alt. mode tailor made for getting into tight spots no other flyer can reach.Nevertheless, Alpha Bravo has the tiniest bit of an inferiority complex when in the company of his fellow Aerialbots, and sometimes takes unnecessary risks to prove he's every bit as good as them.

Alpha Bravo is all about precision and manoeuvrability - tailor made for getting into tight spots.

I was lucky enough to recruit Alpha Bravo to my team and snapped a pic of his in-game profile page. He shares the same ability as the other gunners but stands unique as a flier.

So nobody's going to talk about how Tantrum is clearly MMC's Fortis? Okay then.

I also recruited Rampage, who seems to follow the Grimlock model of his alt mode being his default. Interesting.

Good to see AB getting representation, wonder if he has a 'con counterpart. Offroad, are you on the horizon?

It seems alt mode is the default for all the beastformers.

Keep an eye out, you may see some more new bots here or there.

I've now recruited three of the five Predacons (Headstrong is my third) and only Rampage defaults to beast mode, so I'm going to call that a "no".

Looking at all the available bots now, there are 27 Decepticons to choose from: Megatron, Bludgeon, Soundwave, Skrapnel, Kickback, (where is Bombshell?) Soundwave, Shockwave, the Seeker quartet (counting Slipstream), Breakdown, and all the Constructicons, Predacons, and Combaticons. i hope these complete combiner teams mean combiners are in the next update, or at least we get some impetus to use team members together.

I'm hoping for combiners as well. Completing the latest campaign suggested just that when the Enigma of Combination was found.

*rampant speculation warning*

Here's what I would like to see happen with combiners. If you deploy an entire team, you can spend all your ability to combine but you loose control of the combiner until the battle is over.
