Lugnuts...meh.
Dinobot & Smokescreen... must have. And I am not a fan of beast-bots, so for me to want one is really something.
Leo Prime... Not digging the colors. I would have prefered they take the color scheme from the legends figure. Bright red and blue just aren't good lion colors. I know they are traditional Prime colors, but It came off looking to much like Spiderman. The new head is a plus though.
Overload... Scattershot/Dropshot repaint. Don't have much to ay about him.

Waspinator looks gorgeous, Prowl looks freaking sick... Wreck-gar is very nice... Smokescreen is a surprise, and Dinobot looks better than it did back in TFC Magazine.

Indeed, Leo Prime actually looks quite good but the Lio Convoy mold outclasses it.

And the Lugnut redeco is very clever its so very different to the original, yet still looks good and menacing.
Posted by Skowl on October 20th, 2008 @ 4:58pm CDT
Weird-Al-former for the win!
Also, Dinobot doesn't look as bad as he did before, just wish they had got the colours more... y'know, accurate.

Dinobot looks a lot better than he did before; I see what they're doing there, with the legs. He's actually pretty impressive, when you get right down to it. However, I have to jump the Too Dark bandwagon.
And Wreck-Gar really makes me wish I had enough interest in TFA to shell out $30 for him. Hell, he's even a Weird Al character; I'm so very, very drawn. Again, I wish him all the best.

Atomic Lugnut is ugly, but he does look like a homage to Euro-G1 Predator Skyquake.
Dinobot is a sad-looking figure. I sure hope the Henkei one is much better looking.
Smokescreen is meh, because he was obvious.
Kudos to the new head on Leo Prime, but his color scheme makes him look like Primal Prime. That's a strange mix.
And I was so sure that Overload would be a redeco of his Armada toy. Oh well, I don't want him anyway.
Posted by Mechabreaker on October 20th, 2008 @ 6:13pm CDT
Leo Prime looks pretty cool, I'm not familiar with Beast Wars II or Beast Wars Neo, but I think he looks decent for a repaint.
Wreck-Gar is another must have for me, and if anyone tries to get in my way, well, to save time just refer back to what I said about Universe Smokescreen and Dinobot...
Atomic Lugnut is a big bucket of meh. I would have preferred a Leader class Lugnut over this mediocre repaint.
Will most likely pass on Overload, I already have Universe Dropshot and I really don't feel like adding another repaint of Cybertron/Galaxy Force Scattorshot to my collection.
Posted by Skowl on October 20th, 2008 @ 6:27pm CDT
That was fast.

really let down by "Overload"
Posted by UltraPrimal on October 20th, 2008 @ 6:47pm CDT
Atomic Lugnut: Looks exactly as I thought he would, and I don't like it.
Dinobot: Better. He's growing on me.
Smokescreen: Hey, it's Smokescreen. What do you expect?
Leo Prime: It's great they went to the trouble of remolding the head, but why the hell didn't they paint him like Lio Convoy?!
Overload: I don't like the yellow. Other than that, he looks pretty cool.

100% agree about the head sculpt. Ligerjack was a pretty great figure, but his head would be far from suitable for Lio Convoy.UltraPrimal wrote:Leo Prime: It's great they went to the trouble of remolding the head, but why the hell didn't they paint him like Lio Convoy?!
As far as colors go, I'm taking the "wait and see" approach. Need I remind everyone of the recent Cyclonus fiasco? Moral of the story: These early photos are not the best indicator of the final product's color scheme.
Does anyone actually own Lio Convoy? Sure... he looks great, but his transformation is all kinds of messed up. Specific example? Gravity is pretty much the only thing that keeps his shoulders resting on his toro!Original Sin wrote:Why cant they just release the Lio Convoy figure
Posted by Primacron's Little Helper on October 20th, 2008 @ 8:11pm CDT
Not sure about Leo Prime but it's at least a way of getting the mold for a sensible price.
As some others have said, Overload's a bit too similar to Dropshot but Smokescreen's a gotta have.
Posted by TM Waspinator on October 20th, 2008 @ 8:12pm CDT
I haven't picked up a single Animated figure yet, but Waspinator, Samurai Prowl, and Wreck-Gar all look awesome. I may have to pick them up too!
Posted by diosoth on October 20th, 2008 @ 8:16pm CDT
Dinobot... so, how'd a tan & brown character get a toy that's black & gold, anyway?

Lugnut? PASS, instead of a repaint Hasbro should give us a damn Leader Class version, i'd buy that in a heartbeat.

Would have been better to release Lio Convoy itself. Head remold of leobreaker; good. Traditional "Prime" deco; bleh, it should have been Lio Convoy deco. Best though would have been a legit release of the real Lio Convoy.

ANIMATED
Wreck-Gar~ Awesome, can't wait!
Atomic Lugnut~ Much cooler than expected, but still a voyager = pass
Waspinator~ Awesome! Nice design
Samurai Prowl~ Been waiting for this one!
UNIVERSE
Dinobot~ Beat wars = pass
Smokescreen~ Nice, will need reprolabels though
Leo Prime~ Meh. Maybe on sale. My cybertron prime needs another gauntlet thingy
Overload~ A clever bit of parts swapping with Dropshot should yield a nice Roadbuster.

Not sure I like the look of him as much as Silverstreak, but he's pretty sweet none-the-less.
That Wreckgar is impressive as well, so if I have any extra money when I see him... Most likely a buy.
The rest = pass.
Posted by Down_Shift on October 20th, 2008 @ 10:12pm CDT
I personally don't care for the figure. Prowl on the other hand looks to be bigger then Grimlock with all that armor on.
Posted by Bumblebeast on October 20th, 2008 @ 10:46pm CDT
Lugnut: Meh. I wish he was a voyager, bigger than Megatron. I like the origina purple and green, so this one is dissapointing.
Waspinator: Mine !
Samurai Prowl: Mine !
Dinobot: Awesome. I don't even know the character, but i'll get it anyways.
Leo Prime: Looks huge ! Must be mine.
Overload: Meh. Looks overloaded.
Posted by Dagon on October 20th, 2008 @ 11:00pm CDT
I like Wreckgar, Waspinator and the Lugnut repaint. The rest of these look like shit. That Scattershot is a great figure but that is a pretty ugly paintjob. Universe Prowl is a figure that I think is junk, so I'm not interested in other versions. Samuari Prowl and Leo Prime just don't matter to me.
Sorry team, just saying.

Wreck-Gar: Looks good, but the annoying silliness of the character overrides the decent toy and the awesomeness of Weird Al for me. I'll wait for a Universe motorcycle of him.
Waspinator: Finally an Animated character who doesn't look strange with a gigantic jaw. Decent, but pass.
Dinobot: Better than expected. Possible purchase; depending on the final product.
Overload: This will probably be the most shelf-warming of the Universe line. Pass.
Leo Prime: I was hoping for a new mold of Lio Convoy. I was expecting a Lio Convoy colored Leobreaker. Judging by this photo, we get neither. I have Nemesis Breaker, and was underwhelmed by this mold. PASS!
Smokescreen: Looks great! However, I was never that familiar
with Smokescreen, and I already have Prowl and just bought Bluestreak today. Semi-reluctant pass.
Posted by Bonger on October 21st, 2008 @ 3:49am CDT
Must.....not.....cave and break....the seal......
I know how it is, cave in and buyon, and the next thing I've got them all.
Damn, i think I might cae when I see this one on a shelf. IMO, best animated figure yet, on a conceptual level.
Posted by Nickolai on October 21st, 2008 @ 4:52am CDT
Overload - Jeez. Yuck. I love the mold but this is essentially the same color as Dropshot. Back to back whoring of the same mold? At least paint it red, fer crying out loud.
Smokescreen looks awesome. What mold is that? A brand new one? Or Prowl?
Posted by Wreckgar on October 21st, 2008 @ 5:00am CDT
Lugnut: Dont collect Animated or pointless 'same charatcer' recolours.
Waspinator: A little baffled... He's a car in the cartoon... I guess maybe he gets a wasp alt mode in season 3
Samurai Prowl: See Wreck Gar
Dinobot: Not a Beast Wars fan, so not interested.
Leo Prime: I'll wait for Razorclaw (now that there's a version of this mold with a semi-appropriate head, surely it HAS to happen).
Overload: Huh? I guess this must be a completely new character. G1 Overload was a blue lorry cab with car carrier trailer, Armada was a red armoured trailer thingy. I'm not aware of a green tank baring this name existing before. Will I get him? Well as G1 Universe is all I'm collecting at the moment, it's possible. Pretty low priority though.
Posted by Auto Bot on October 21st, 2008 @ 5:07am CDT
Smokescreen paintjob is nice. I hope the actual toy will be painted like this.
Smokescreen is repaint of Prowl.
Posted by dr_n00b on October 21st, 2008 @ 6:32am CDT
wreck-gar - despite waves of enthusiasm, the character on the show was pretty rediculous, shallow, and not interesting. the toy looks like a complete backformer, with the entire trash bin on his back - which might have been ok on the show, but on a toy it will most likely be out of proportions. honestly, just look at it - the only truck part on the front of the robot is the bumper.
waspinator is ok. not excited about him, but maybe if the character on the show turns out alright...
atomic lugnut - JAFR, prefer the original.
leo prime - head mould looks awesome, mould itself is pretty good. colors are a little off, to plain (only colors and very little paint apps), and the two colors selected are too neon according to the picture. pass for me.
dinobot - not into the beast era, sorry.
overload - JAFR, and a really bad one.
finally, the only one i could have been excited about - samurai prowl - which is just bloody awesome. gotta love armors - but ffs, why release an inferior figure, and then release this piece of awesome?! i'm so disapointed i got regular prowl now, with his stupid useless traffic light. since its the same bike, i'm not buying the same toy twice.
so it looks like i'll be waiting for movie 2.0 or maybe saving my cash for MP-08.

Down_Shift wrote:Am I the only one that wanted Waspinator to be his Cybertron hotrod mode instead of an actual wasp?
I personally don't care for the figure.
Are you the only one? Absolutely not. I thought Wasp's hotrod mode was badass!
I hate complaining about this stuff, I really do. I'm also tired of complaining about little things like repaints etc. It's just so frivolous.
But here it's like Derrick Wyatt handed them this perfect opportunity for a mold that could be easily retooled into Cybertronian Bumblebee and Cliffjumper - repaints that I would welcome with open arms(and open wallet), and they pass on it. Here was a giftwrapped opportunity, and they just toss it in the trash. - When you consider all the truly pointless and unwarranted repaints they foist on us, I find that maddening. Given how badly Black Arachnia shelfwarmed, I don't even know that it's good business sense to do another arthropod. Though granted, they do have plenty of cars.
As for the Waspinator toy itself, I think the alt mode is bad, and the transformation is dull. As a wasp, it's terrible. Looks as much like a grasshopper. I do like it in bot mode though, it's a pretty sharp character design. It's actually fairly good as things go, but I just feel like here's a figure I could live without, cheating me out of 3 figures I really did want.
On an optimistic note, I hope they will still consider doing a Cybertronian Bumblebee/Wasp/Cliffjumper.

And now?
Now they re-re-release a mold they had just re-released with a new paint job for the Universe line, damn near same colors even. Come on!
If Hasbro's got such a jones to get that mold out there, how about doing so with original name & colors from the Cybertron line (they're doing it with that Cyb Prime & whatever-else two-pack, right?) so folks out there who never managed to pick up Scattershot at retail and still want him (*ahem*) don't have to head to ebay or BBTS and pay the rediculous prices usually listed.

Covenant wrote:I call the Overload what it is; total bs. We keep getting excuses on why such'n'such tank character didn't get this figure or that size, the most recent being Galvatron who is admitted to have been designed for Voyager but down-sized to Deluxe. In that big Q & A that just came along not too long ago they say the reason for this was that the Universe line already has too many tank or tank-like Voyager/Ultras out there.
small distinction... I believe they said that while they would've liked to do a larger class Galvatron, once the figure was actually going through the design process it was never anything other than a deluxe.
I don't mind this Overload repaint, as long as I can ignore it. But it seems like bad timing with having just repainted the same mold. I don't want those things clogging shelves while I'm waiting for better stuff to show up.
Posted by GuyIncognito on October 21st, 2008 @ 8:35am CDT
Wreck-Gar = AWESOME mold, even though the truck is a bit too cute
Atomic Lugnut = LOVE IT, much cooler than the purple/teal color, which I'm glad I didn't buy now
Also...
Waspinator looks cool, and I love Samurai Prowl
UNIVERSE
Dinobot & Smokescreen = meh. Dinobot's OK; don't care for the Smokescreen/Prowl mold
Leo Prime = kind of cool, I don't know what to think of him
Overload = nice; I've been wanting this mold, but I'm glad I didn't buy the baby-poo-yellow version that's warming the shelves in the stores now; this repaint is much better
