Every two weeks, Seibertron.com brings you a Top 5 list related to all things Transformers written by me, your fellow editor. These are my opinions (just like movie or game reviews hosted by sites are still just the opinion of one person) so what matters most is what you guys think of the topic or list, and I hope to see your own lists or comments on omissions and ranking. Let's have fun! All previous lists can be found here.

Top 5 Best Helicopter Transformers Toys

I am going by the best molds. Simple title, simple list, let's get to it.

5. Transformers G1 1985 Whirl

This was a tough call between Generations Springer (30th) and G1 Whirl but deep down, this is a helicopter list and Whirl has one of the best helicopters ever put out there. Probably second best to the number one on this list. He is a gorgeous and well thought out toy. You couldn't tell that he turns into a robot from looking at the helicopter since everything seems to serve only that mode. That turns out to mostly be true since aside from his head and claws, the entire robot is made from repurposed helicopter parts. That works so well for him though, since it gives him a very sleek form with minimal extraneous kibble. You get this tall mean lean killing machine of a robot which clashes so interestingly with the choice of having this toy repurposed as an Autobot rather than a Decepticon. Of course, him being from the 80s means that he is the toy with the least amount of articulation on this list but his perfect look in both modes gives him more than enough cred to stand alongside any of his brethren below.

4. Transformers Animated Megatron

What is amazing about this toy is also what is great about the animated line as a whole: they actually found a way to recreate the angular show designs into toys. Remember, the designs were made for the cartoon first and the toys second (that didn’t happen before) so it is a real feat for the designers to have reverse engineered those designs into toys that look like the show models. Megatron himself does this pretty brilliantly by also boasting a very simple transformation. It’s interesting how his legs and feet are there naked in vehicle mode but they blend in perfectly as part of the helicopter. The rotors become the swords and while the arm canon can be considered part forming, it is very effective at both concealing the robot parts in alt mode and conveying a G1 look in robot mode.

3. Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Blades/ Alpha Bravo/ Vortex

This mold surprised me. I was worried it would be too simple but it works pretty well. This is by far the most streamlined and sleek helicopter we have ever gotten. There is no undercarriage and it is very simple in design which is refreshing compared to all the attack helicopters we see. This is mainly because the arms are outside the helicopter body, not contributing to added bulk. While this could have been done terribly, the guns mask the arms perfectly to the point that they are fully disguised and don't look out of place (as arms, but the jury is still out on a rescue helicopter having guns). The robot mode is neat, and this mold also becomes an arm and a leg (and costs far from that). I like it better as a leg personally but what matters is that this sleek helicopter mold is the most versatile one around.

2. Transformers Cybertron Evac (Live Convoy)

Like all Cybertron toys, Evac is a nice solid and fun toy. His design is very unique due to his large feet made of the lower half of the rescue helicopter as well as his asymmetrical arms. His headsculpt is great with a central crest to go with the theme of him being a Convoy (a Prime) in the Japanese cartoon. The helicopter mode itself is lots of fun with several points of interactivity:
-His rotor blades spin when pushing a button, and they become a spinning-blade weapon mounted on his robot mode's left arm.
-He has an adjustable and retractable tow-hook on a string, which ends up mounted on his right arm.
-His engine exhausts become two missile launchers which spring forward when inserting the cyber key.
So yeah, lots of fun with this massive toy.

1. Transformers Dark of the Moon Skyhammer

This toy probably has the most unique way to deal with his rotors in robot mode. With his chest area being the central body of the helicopter, his chest is the top where the rotors are and they wrap around him in robot mode resulting in no extraneous kibble. This is by far the most complex helicopter transformer but every step makes sense and is a joy to watch unfold (especially the forearms). For a movie toy, Skyhammer has some gorgeous alt mode integration like his rotors wrapping around his chest, his legs being the tail and the cockpit splitting to form shoulder armour. While he has the more realistic look from the films, he does have some smooth surfaces and looks far more robotic than alien. He is number one because of all helicopter Transformers, he has the best helicopter mode (where you see none of the robot), the best robot mode (completely kibble free) and the best transformation while being a perfect marriage of the movie and classic Transformers aesthetic.

Honourable Mentions: There is actually a ton of good helicopter molds out there, I was tempted of turning it into a top 10 list. However, those five are really a cut above the rest, with the exception of Transformers Generations Springer. The best triple changer mold by far. However, it being a triple changer, a few sacrifices were made, stopping it from being the best helicopter mode in the business. The landing gears are a bit awkward around the back and it's really too bad they didn’t try to add some detailing to give the idea of some tail rotors in the back (the G1 toy did).

Along with him, here are the others that crossed my mind when thinking of this list:

Rescue bot Blades, probably the best toy of that line simply for the style and how it actually works as a simpler toy while trying to achieve the desired aesthetics.

Great things come in small packages sometimes. Legion Airachnid, Minicon Jolt and Legion Windshear deserve a mention for accomplishing great helicopters at such a small scale. Airachnid herself is amazing simply for being better than her deluxe class version and sporting some really nice paint apps for this class (in robot mode).

HFTD Tomahawk is another movie design done right. His legs are not the best but it's a solid deluxe class helicopter.

I love the list! Thanks WJ. Those are all great vehicles and figures. Good list.

Where did you rank 2007 Movie Blackout?

Blackout is one beautiful helicopter, realistic, burly, cool. The figure is also awesome and bad-ass.

My list would be:

1. Skyhammer
2. Blackout
3. Tomahawk
4. CW Alpha Bravo
5. Gen Whirl
6. Universe Blades
7. G1 Micromaster Blaze Master
8. Animated Megatron

There's a lot of great helicopters left off that list.

First and foremost, Energon Bulkhead. He is an awesome helicopter Transformer. And he was our Classics Springer before all the imitators, like BotCon Springer and Universe Springer and GDO Springer, until we eventually got Generations Springer.

Armada Cyclonus: Also, a good helicopter. Only bad part of him was that he was a product of his time, i.e., Armada, i.e., no articulation in order to be more GEEWUN.

Speaking of G1 and no articulation, Generations Whirl is obviously better than G1 Whirl because he's basically just the original, but with articulation.

I gotta agree and say Generations Springer and Generations Whirl should've been on that list, or at least this list expanded into a top ten.

Cybertron Jolt is one of my favorite minibot of all time.

As for Skyhammer, you forgot to mention how genius the rotor blades were integrated into the bot mode. NO helicopter Tfs ever do that.

As for Evac, I have the Botcon Shattered Glass Galvatron version of the mold and it's pretty amazing:

Finally, I would have replaced the CW copter by this amazing little guy: One step AOE Helicopter Drift:

Not only is he pretty fun, there is absolutely NO robo parts visible in copter mode, no matter the angle. Pretty awesome.

Will, how could you not put Alpha Bravo as number one? Isn't that a betrayal to the side you chose to be on? ;-)

In all seriousness, a mighty fine list, I still regret not getting skyhammer for cheap when I saw him but, c'est la vie.

Raises hand--- helicopter TF collector. Until I stopped, recently.

1. Movie voyager Blackout is a pretty sweet helicopter and was the coolest introduction to our first live transformer ever! Movie toys are not my favorite though. Bot modes...

2. Energon Bulkhead... Horrible old man, with the firing hip shake on he show, but an amazing toy! As was said, he was Springer in our classic collection forever. And his awesome accessory attachment...boss.

3. Energon Blackout is excellent too.

4. G1 Blue Bacchus/ is a beautiful brick of a helicopter. Transform Not great by any means, cause pretender.

Agree with cybertron evac, but the blades repaint is so-so good, as is the red repaint of bulkhead.

Skyhammer is good for many reasons, but I don't like what was done with the rotor blades, yes it's different, but I like me rotors to be useable in bot mode too. I know everyone wants to see new things done, but I like that part of copters a lot.

Worst:

Movie blaze master. Worst legs ever.

Great list, as always.

Blazemaster's robot mode certainly is lacking, but his alt mode is very streamlined, no kibble at all.

Evac is one of those figures I wanted but never got, now I want to start looking for him on ebay or something.

Nice list, Will!

I really like Thrilling 30 Whirl and Springer as helicopter transformers.

As for weapons on rescue helicopters like Combiner Wars Blades, that's not completely out of place. USCG helicopters are usually armed despite being used for rescue operations. How heavily armed probably depends on the mission. They usually carry machine guns in the doors, but considering how choppers like UH-60 Blackhawk can be equipped to carry missiles, the Coast Guard is probably able to add pylons to theirs to arm them with anti-ship missiles.

My personal list is g1 vortex, g1 sandstorm, generations whirl. Alpha bravo.

Of the choppers I never owned, think blackout was awesome.

Admittedly my favourite toy I ever had was not a transformer but a gobot called warpath. He was a very good Apache helicopter...

I'd love them to try more iconic designs like a chinook or a Russian hind,

But he is so much more conventional. And while G1 has its place, Energon Bulkhead is basically rotorstorm updated. The toy helicopter style with the leg placement is very similar.

While G1 Whirl also has his legs in a similar place, they never go under the figure becoming robot kibble. Instead, they are just the lower sides of the chopper and totally feel a part of the helicopter.

The generations version of Whirl failed at that, and instead gives us this great big gap. Along with his awkward legs and insanely tight reverse knee joint, I really feel Hasbro and Takara could have upped their game. This short review explains it better.

And plus, this is about molds, Alpha Bravo is only one of the many great examples of that mold use.

That's why I am thankful to have such a great community to continue this discussion with. Please let me know your top 5 lists (some have and thats awesome!) like that future fans can find this thread and see for themselves what else is out there when it comes to Helicopter molds :)

Thanks for having my back, Ultra Primal and highlighting the omissions, though please see above for my stance on gen whirl, who I think has a terrible copter mold.

Thats cool. He'll be number 1 when his time comes (on another list I have cooked up).

TK415 wrote:I love the list! Thanks WJ. Those are all great vehicles and figures. Good list.

Super kind of you!

As for Blackout, I have trouble with him (I have Grindor btw). The helicopter mode is great, no doubt about it, but I just have a huge issue with how little the robot looks with all those copter bits surrounding it. It's like there is a helicopter and a robot but they dont share the same space. Plus, I think he is a big victim of the bay aesthetic, especially the face and legs. So while the mold is cool (like with that extra playability mode), he didnt quite make the cut for me compared to the others. If his bot mode was more imposing and if he had more vehicle integration, it would be different. Glad you like him though!

He certainly deserves a place before that turd Alpha Bravo. Even discounting my dislike of the little usurper, it's probably my least favorite of the CW limb molds, and just not a great helicopter, IMO.

Springer is pretty fantastic, and I don't think the helicopter mode suffers much, if at all, from triple changer syndrome. If it does, then you still have to similarly dock AB and co for their FOUR modes and compromises such as hey, why's this rescue copter got robot arms (with missiles) sitting on its sides.

Yeah he really did steal the place of that one generic jetguy that's hardly more important/defined then the other 3 limb guys in his team.

How dare they add an alternate member for diversity and cannot totally not switch places with Slingshot any time.

Joking aside even if you don't like Alpha Bravo what about Blades and Vortex and the Helicopter mode?
Re: Top 5 Best Helicopter Transformers Toys (1758963)
Posted by ZeroWolf on January 24th, 2016 @ 3:29am CST
My experience with the blackout mold is through the whirl redeco they put out, his helicopter alt mode us fantastic but I was hugely disappointed with robot mode, he ends up being squat because of that back piece which has the rotors attached.

As for the AB mold, I think the compromises are great for what is a limb on a combiner. I also like him as he's a new character (who in my head is a sniper...and also pretends to be blades and vortex)

His robot mode is fantastically playable and his transformation quick and problem free.

Besides this list is just what Will thinks, you may not agree but don't go out your way to criticise it, just make your own :-)

I like 30th Springer as far as stylised choppers go and 2007 Blackout for realistic.

I have a lil fondness for the original G1 Vortex toy cos I had it as a kid and got fond memories of 'flying' him about with one hand while the other hand flicks the rotor blades to spin.

Whirl is just ugly rectangular junk whether in the original G1 line or his Generations update.

I need to get me a Skyhammer or the chopper Drift retool.

While I did buy him after your recommendation, I do have some problems with him. Lets go over your previous statement:

-Kanrabat- wrote:

Well aside from his robot hips which are right there in a totally different colour, oh and the extremities of his mask right in the middle, as well as his chest which imitates the grill of a car right above the cockpit. He is neat though overall but the part that makes me dislike him greatly is how flat his face is. I can't get over that. It is cool and worth noting that this is the only original mold for Drift's helicopter mode. We make fun at hos cheap Hasbro is some times but in this case, they actually made a whole new mold that was never reused in any way.

Also

-Kanrabat- wrote:As for Skyhammer, you forgot to mention how genius the rotor blades were integrated into the bot mode. NO helicopter Tfs ever do that.

Also, pretty happy this list has brought all the Gen Whirl and Movie Blackout fans out, because I swear I had no clue these molds were liked this much.

Armada Cyclonus is a good figure, but Armada wasn't trying to be GEEWUN at all. If it was, Cyclonus wouldn't have been a helicopter.

As for G1/Generations Whirl, I'd say that the strength of the G1 alt mode, given the time it was produced, and the articulation of the Generations version could actually be a wash, in terms of which one was better. And, I think the list was determined based on alt mode first and foremost, so that might be why G1 made the list.
But that doesn't really explain the crummy CW helicopter then...

Agreed. The limited articulation, was more to do with the gimmicks, and general design aesthetic of the line, than ever trying to be G1 at all.

And wbile I love Cyclonus to bits. Even have the KB Exclusive Urban Camo version, he's not that great of a helicopter.

Energon Bulkhead / Superlink Sprung , is much better. Also have him. His drone is neither here nor there, but his Helicopter mold is really well done.

The Energon combiner limb (Blackout, Vortex), also has a fantastic Helicopter Mode.

At that price, if you don't already have the mold, you should get 2. One to customise, and one to display. BTW, the toys are brand new but don't come in their original packagings. Maybe because they are factory overproduction that get clearanced.

Fun list Will! Great discusion fueler, as this a neat little niche topic that everyone can get involved in.

So I'll be a guy who is glad Blackout didn't make the cut. I have the Whirl repaint. Maybe it's repaint/reproduction/exclusive syndrome (I think he was a TRU exclusive, right?). They might as well made that toy out of paper. I have transformed that toy probably 3 times, and he is laden with stress marks and near broken. Quality aside, I think his robot mode is atrocious. He is just a giant pile of kibble. His kibble has kibble. I can barely discern a humanoid form from that mass of heli-parts.
Now maybe my memory is a little sketchy, as he has been packed up for about 6 or 7 years, but I also seem to remember being appalled by the interference of his articulation by all that junk hanging off him.
I will say the helicopter mode IS clean and kib free, which may be his only saving grace. I do also remember liking his head sculpt (Whirl's that is) for a movie toy. The only thing worse was the Cyberverse Commander version. #-o

Now, I really need to try out Skyhammer. He does that nice thing of skirting the line of non-movie character making a good toy. And so many folks give him high praise, one of these days I'll have to check him out. Just not all that interested in the Drift release. Although he uses a nice color pallet.

Really glad Cybertron Evac made the list. He's probably my favorite Heli-Dude of all. Nice clean rescue chopper alt mode. Awesome sculpted detail in bot. Interesting asymmetrical transformation. I have the Springer repaint from the Target two-pack, and he filled in the ranks with the movie crew on my Classics shelf for years, until you-know-who came along. The weapon gimmicks integrate into robot mode nicely and don't interfere to badly with articulation . I think the grappling hook makes for a neat weapon, and I always love the chopper blade-as-weapon idea.
What I love most about his robot mode, and I won't go into too much detail as not to bore anyone, but who ever designed his robot mode most certainly had some old Microman figures on their desk. The head sculpt and the tail fin/rotor wings are neat little design nods to some specific Microman esthetics. Which Takara designers are known to do. They love tradition!

My list:
5. G1 blades
4. G1 Vortex
3. CW Alpha Bravo (in Vortex colors)
2. Energon combiner limb copter (pick any name and color)
1. Cybertron Evac (as Springer)

Good talk! :D

Reading through all the Blackout appreciation, I can't but speak against it. Never really a fan at all.

Now, if we were talking about this other version of that character...

Only Animated would take a bulky Bayformer and make a toy out of it that never saw US release. :-P

It's a very expensive thing indeed, and would probably benefit from a Leader scale - but just.. look at it.

Eh. The head/chest ruins it for me.

I wouldn't have such disdain for him if SOMEONE (who I won't name but his name starts with V, ends in L and has a'a in the middle) made him out to be something relevant!

Ew, just no. No no no.
(me definitely not a fan of Animated's simplistic cartoony style)

You could always get the AoE voyager Drift version.

Also, "high cost"? What high cost? Unless you want it for free, this listing is pretty dirt cheap, even with the shipping:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?siteid=0&pub=5574891718&campid=5336631220&customid=&toolid=10001&mkevt=1&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.ca%2Fitm%2FNEW-ACTION-Movie%20...%20SwwbdWGSs2%3C%2Fa%3E%3F

Woah, that is cheap. Probably a funnily named knock off like the DotM Ironhide figure I bought for a similar price a while back but that was great quality (and even included his Leader class knife scaled down to Voyager) Works out at just over a £10 including shipping for a quality Voyager class figure when far inferior and smaller CW Legends figures cost £9.99 in stores here. I'd prefer the Drift version (as I passed on his Deluxe car form for being too small even for a Deluxe and want him in my TF Autobot team) but I might get this one too! Thanks for the heads up! :D

Always seems like TFs sacrifice the bots for the helicopter modes. All the copters I have are kinda subpar. Even the highly regarded Skyhammer, the knees just kill it for me.

*sigh* Still hoping Hasbro will find a way to use this mold.

If they can make a G2 Menasor, surely they can figure out Animated Blackout. Maybe some kind of crazy 10-year-Aniversary crossover online-exclusive thing, with green Ratchets and tattooed Starscreams?
