When we first showed the images for Takara's updated G1 Optimus Prime Transformers toys, fans said they would get them "no matter the cost". Now let's see if that's true, because we now know the prices and they are rather premium. This new toyline is called Missing Link, which has these toys serving as the missing link between the G1 toys of old and the modern toys of today (so G1 toys with more modern articulation) and below is the listing description for each:

Missing link C-01 Convoy (Toy version) – accessories include trailer, Roller, gun, battle axe and Matrix. 17380 Yen ($120 USD price point).

Missing link C-02 Convoy (Anime version) – accessories include gun, battle axe and Matrix (no trailer). 10780 Yen ($75 USD price point).

These are not said to be exclusive and thus may be available on Amazon Japan. While you will have to pay shipping on top of these prices, Amazon (along with other Japanese based retailers) often offer a discount on the MSRP.

These will be fully revealed next week. The new images including the price come from Game Fun House.

I'll still get that Optimus with trailer.

On the other hand, the combined price for both would still be way cheaper than trying to get a single vintage one complete off eBay, and having both together could allow one to be Cartoon Optimus and the other to be Marvel Optimus (I'd just share the trailer between the both of them).

I suspect the boxes will be basically the same as the vintage ones (or at least the toy color one will be), the contents seem to be identical to the vintage toy, even comes with the red decoder ("secret film") and a "leaflet" which is probably the catalog. Also since these are C-01 and C-02 instead of ML-01 or whatever I would guess there's also D-01 coming.

C-01 Contents:
1. Robot Body
2. Container
3. Energy Axe
4. Laser Rifle
5. Hose
6. Energy Replenishment Pump
7. Energy Supply Adaptor
8. Roller
9. Roller Tires (runner)
10. Missiles (runner)
11. Matrix
12. Stickers
13. Secret Film
14. Collection Card
15. Instruction Manual
16. Leaflet

C-02 contents:
01. Robot Body (Anime Edition)
02. Laser Rifle
03. Energy Axe
04. Matrix
05. Secret Film
06. Collection Card
07. Stickers
08. Instruction Manuel
09. Leaflet

Remember when people feared that CHUG was going to be G1 with knees before the WFC and Legacy lines did more detailed and media-accurate designs (depending on the deco or specific character)?

I might be over analyzing but does this imply future figures in this style? Like- Imagine a G1 Megs with this (in an alternate universe where we could get it in non neon colors), Starscream, the minibots. Need this happen

The initial images referred to this as a "series" which isn't how I would describe a pair.

I may be wrong but appart from dealing with the improved articulations, There may be some improved transformation sequences. From the small and blurry pictures, I can see that this Optimus may be having hands that transform from his forearms instead of just partsforming like the original did.
:-?

No, you're correct. The hands open and flip into the wrists (or fold sideways and tuck into his belly) to reveal the headlights rather than popped off.

I'm looking forward the clearer pictures and maybe the video review. This hands thing alone warrant a purchase.

This is amazing! If there’s the same amount of diecast on the figure as the G1 then this is a day one purchase for me! I just wish it had the painted metal plates on the sides of the trailer like the original G1 toy to use magnetic parts like the masterpiece as well but still looking great I’m excited to see more pictures!

Seems about the price I expected, just wondering what the scale would be (I didn't see anything of the sort unless I probably looked past it!) but I'm guessing he's supposed to be a larger lad with that price.

Nope.
It will be the exact same size and overall appearance as the original G1 Optimus Prime. No bigger, no smaller. Otherwise this release would have absolutely no point.

If you never had an original G1 Optimus before, the cab is as big as ER Optimus, the bot is around the same size as a big deluxe, and the trailer is double the size of the ER one.

The price is for the diecast, the engineering, the parts, and the fact that there will be less copies available than a regular release.

Ah, was just wondering if there was any official statement about the size. I personally wouldn't mind the OG toy size at all, but I wouldn't be surprised if they went larger. I do believe the higher price is definitely due to the accessory count + trailer, and the diecast contributes as well, just was wondering what the scope was!

Wouldn't it be such a trollish move if it turned out that there was actually no diecast in this figure whatsoever, and it was all just plastic?

Personally I'd like to see this stay around the same size, in fact, it's my personal belief they've just taken the original mold and updated a couple of joints. As G1 figures go, Prime was actually reasonably articulated for the time.

Sabrblade wrote:Wouldn't it be such a trollish move if it turned out that there was actually no diecast in this figure whatsoever, and it was all just plastic?

People would complain, as they always do, still buy it, complain some more, a few weeks rolls by and the world hasn't ended. So trollish yes, but the same old pattern would continue.

I'm pretty sure the trailer is completely unchanged mold-wise from the original, so the new cab figure would have to retain the scale of the original figure in order to work with it.

Though, personally, I wish they'd remold the trailer connector to be a more secure peg like how most trailers have attached to most Optimus truck toys since Powermaster Optimus. I was never a fan of the fat rounded peg that the trailers of Optimus and Ultra Magnus attached to so loosely.

Personally I don't care for diecast but it would justify the price to have it here (and be more accurate to the source, of course.)

Based on the recent Walmart reissues in toon colors of G1 figures, it's impossible that this "Origins" G1 Optimus have no diecast.

I think they should follow what real trucks have and it's a 10-step process to connect the trailer and cab. Oh, and it's all tiny parts that have to move in sequence.

Not necessarily. It's entirely possible they've taken the CAD files of the original figure and updated the necessary joints, then created an all new mold which utilises nothing but plastic.

Possible ... though I would say unlikely. The parts that I believe would need to be replaced were plastic to begin with so they'll more than likely retain the die cast parts.

(Also dependant on the state of the molds too)

I think the only parts that were diecast that could be changed to plastics are those who may hinder the new engineering. Appart that, there would be no reasons to change them. Also, the only diecast part on Optimus is his chest cab cabin.

It may be a different story if they ever make the seekers. I really wonder how they'd pull it off on those with that MASSIVE diecast block that make up half of their body.

We now have listings and official images from Amazon Japan for both releases of the Missing Link series which features G1 Optimus Prime toy version with trailer and G1 Optimus Prime with cartoon deco and sculpt. Check out all the molded details that are replacing the stickers and the changes to articulation and transformation steps. Clicking the blue links brings you to the listings where people outside Japan can indeed order from Amazon Japan. Be aware of shipping and duty fees depending the your country of residence.

Transformers: Missing Link C-01 Convoy

Lost dreams are linked across time!
The "Missing Link" series of virtual reprints that may have existed in that era is launched to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the birth of Transformers!
What if the original Convoy was fully posable? The size, texture, and nostalgia of those days have been kept intact in a completely new design!
While the size, transformation pattern, and basic construction using some die-cast alloys follow the original Convoy toys, the ideal Commander Convoy toy is now available with updated articulation for posing and gimmicks depicted in the animation.
Even the packaging and accessories are a thorough homage to the style of the time, bringing back the excitement of opening Transformers products in the 80's, even more so than the reissued versions.
The replacement of the fists during the transformation, which was a regret in the product at that time, was reviewed, and complete transformation that stores them inside without removing them is possible. In addition, each joint, which was limited in posing at the time, has been changed to movable, allowing the figure to be freely posed.
The Matrix can be stored in the chest as a reproduction from the animation scenes. The newly designed fists have movable fingers so that the Matrix can be removed and held in the hands. The anti-aircraft gun in the container can be separated from the container and rolled and driven, just like in the animation. The reconnaissance buggy "Roller" can be inverted at the rear to reveal the warning light depicted in the cartoon.
The laser rifle has been modified to insert the original grip portion into the fist. The "Energy Axe," a weapon memorable in the opening sequence of the animation, is also included and can be attached to the fist.
Also included is a red transparent "secret film" that brings back the play of decoding by overlaying it on the spec chart printed on the back of the package.
The well-known "secret emblem" is also affixed to the robot's body, and when warmed with a finger, the corps mark appears.
The main body of the robot has sculpted versions of the mechanical parts that were originally represented by stickers on a flat surface.
An additional joint hole on the back of Convoy is for a stand (sold separately) that allows Convoy to be displayed in an action pose.
Two new license plate user stickers that can reproduce the Japanese and international box art of the time have also been added, and a newly designed collection card is also included.

[Set contents] Robot body (1), container (1), energy axe (1), laser rifle (1), hose (1), energy supply pump (1), energy supply adapter (1), roller (1), roller tire (runner) (1), missile (runner) (1), matrix (1), seal (1), secret film (1), collection card (1), instruction manual (1), leaflet (1),

I just remembered the biggest thing I hated about the original Optimus mold from the last time I held one in hand years ago: The giant gaping hole in the middle of his back (or rather, the figure's lack of a proper back at all). Looking at these pics and seeing that it also still has those ugly static flap sticking out from the back of the upper arms tells me that this figure still has the same big gaping hole behind it.

They could have further retooled the arms and the backside to both remove those unsightly arm flaps and create a proper back piece that could open and close to allow the head to still flip out from its original storage area inside the torso (think like the panel on the back of G1 Thunderclash or Machine Wars Optimus that does exactly that) while the arms would sit flush against it in truck mode.

The "Toy" version with trailer is the one to get. Because at least for me, getting the other one serves no purpose. The only thing that bug me a bit is that Roller is not blue like the Hasbro version I'm used to. But appart that, EVERYTHING about that "G1 With Knees" Optimus blow me away. He even have an abs-crunch!

So, despite the thing costing a bit over 200$CAN counting shipping and taxes, I preordered it instantly.

The hole is there because itt needs the space for the head to fold in. They could have probably added a couple of doors there though.

I have pre-ordered the trailer less version though. At 65 bucks it's not terrible.

However, if they did that, this Optimus would no longer have the TRUE G1 look.

I'm actually glad that remained.

At least he has the Matrix chamber now so you can't see directly through him. It's an improvement no matter how you look at it.

Waiting to see what Hasbro's price ends up being, I'm sure it'll be on Pulse.

That's assuming the Matrix chamber has a new wall behind it instead of being left hollow (which we can't tell either way from these pics).

Wow wow wow! I’m so excited I’ve always wanted a line like this! I want every character from the first wave of figures to be updated like this! It’s been a dream of mine since I can remember I’m so happy!

Definitely not a second wall behind the chamber, the empty gap under his head confirms it.

That image also shows that he has a second shoulder joint in his upper arm, not just he one in his chest. giving him double shoulder joints and an ab crunch make his lack of a neck joint (just a swivel) very strange.

Still no word on if these have diecast or not. The descriptions don't mention it so probably not, but usually Japanese companies give material lists that would confirm it.

While the size, transformation pattern, and basic construction using some die-cast alloys follow the original Convoy toys, the ideal Commander Convoy toy is now available with updated articulation for posing and gimmicks depicted in the animation.

Diecast confirmed!

I'm even more glad to have ordered the full set.

Also, I expect the trailer to have no stickers either and be full of molded and painted details. Thus, the price is very justified.

Is Amazon JP still the best cheapest option for importing to US?

The only difference between the 2 is the trailer and chest color?

I think a lot of collectors would be satisfied with G1 remakes that simply had separated legs and feet, never mind any extra articulation. But seeing a G1 Optimus that has full articulation, well that's noteworthy. It proves they COULD do it. I think I'll wait for the inevitable USA release, rather than paying through the nose for this one.

I think the recent G1 Optimus reissue retailed $50. I don't think a US issue will be cheaper, unless it goes on sale.

I'll add that the only thing cheaper would only be the shipping.

I'm not taking any chances and I'm pre-ordering at .jp.
