The 2016 Tokyo Toy Show decided to go out with a bang with the reveal of the second Beast Wars Masterpiece Toy, MP Cheetor. The picture below, showing the prototype, comes from a tweet by Takara Tomy themselves. This toy, like Masterpiece Optimus Primal, is very faithful to the cartoon model. It will be coming with different faces for the robot and beast mode as well as the two weapons the original toy came with. Optimus Primal was revealed at this very show last year and now that we can see him at this same show finalized a year later, it is time for this process to start again with Cheetor.

That looks amazing. More ladder magic! Maybe it's an illusion with it being a gray prototype, but it looks like they pulled off the "flattened" Cheetah head on the chest in robot mode. I've been staring at the pic trying to see how they did it or trying to figure out what's creating the illusion, but I can't see it. It almost looks like the ears are further back on the cheetah chest but I doubt they'd cheat. Is anyone else seeing this or is it just me?

Looks great. Bring on the rest of the main cast!

I think I figured it out. It looks like the ears might rotate, which if they do, would provide him with some more facial expressions in beast mode, and accommodates the "flattened" look I'm seeing with the robot mode chest.

It'd be cool Shadow Panther used the Tigatron remold (who should have a bulkier body), but with an actual panther head.

He's not my favorite BW character, but this honestly looks way too good to pass up. I can only hope Megatron, Waspinator and Dinobot are coming soon (and Depth Charge, but from what people have said he seems far less likely). Whatever happens, I'm far more excited for more of these than the G1 characters! :MAXIMAL: :PREDACON:

There be some kibble indeed, but there's always 1 mode that suffers a bit. I don't really see how else they could have done it, with skinny cheeta legs turning into thick robot trunks.
The rest of him, and especially the bot mode, looks amazingly toon-accurate. The head crest seems a smidge large, but that's nitpicking.

No, I really don't. I was left disappointed with the Generations incarnations, which made me appreciate the originals even more. Considering I have a nearly complete BW, BWII and BW Neo collection, adding Masterpieces into the equation doesn't really achieve anything.

not 100% sold on mp primal - i got the generations figures and they were nice enough but if i have to prioritise my spending, it would definitely be a skip. However this guy does look pretty good and would very much be a buy if it weren't for the g1 related releases on the horizon

OMG.... I didn't think they'd actually pull Cheetor off... I'm amazed.

For those that weren't impressed with the Generations update (I sure wasn't, did he ever use shriukens?) I'm not sure why you'd hold that against the MP release. (Unless you're taking yourself out of another collection, which I can understand). But this cheetor feels like what the original always was in my head. While I'm not sure I can see an MP Rattrap trumping the Generations release... that "second" attempt at Cheetor was a hot mess.

Will be interesting to see colors, if they actually go with the intestings (gutbuster) cannon. I love the throw back to the tail-gun from the original toy. I don't think he ever used it in the animation.

I do hope Dinobot is next... though I'm still hoping for a faceplate version (since the original toy release had one, and that was always my favorite). Bonus points if they leave the rib/shins translucent.

I was on the fence with MP Primal, because TBH there wasn't anything wrong with the origianl release (if you can find one these days). However, the show accurate wrist-cannons are interesting. And to a degree I think the egineering magic in these beasties could be more interesting that some of the G1 MPs... we'll find out.

Fair enough. Sounds nutty to me, but I'm well aware of how nutty many others consider my own opinions.

Very little if my own BW collection has withstood the test of time, or even survived, so this stuff is the bees knees to me.

This looks really, really good.

Fun observations/speculation from making bad attempts at translating the machine translation of the Japanese twitter accounts posting about this from the show follow, none of this should be taken as factual:
  • Cheetor was shown in a presentation shortly before being unveiled on the show floor, but pictures weren't allowed because Takara wanted full control over how this was presented to the public. Apparently, this is because the reactions to the tiny bit of Beast Convoy shown a year ago were not what they expected, with fans jumping to conclusions based on the limited amount shown. I say "good on them", but this was apparently not a popular decision with those in attendance.
  • In same presentation, there were some hints about how good a dinosaur may look given this treatment? This was super hard to make anything of, but it seems that MP Beast Megatron might have sort of been hinted at, maybe as the next one of these happening if successful. Could also have easily been a joke, reference to Dinobot, or a poor reading of poorly translated tweets on my part. Still fun to dream!

Regarding Scott's post above, I think Optimus Primal was a poor choice to go with as the first reveal/release. His original toy is still pretty awesome, especially with the remolds it got 10 years ago which Takara themselves thought were good enough for a release in Transformers Legends at the tail end of 2014.

Rhinox, Rattrap and Waspinator all recently got decent (not perfect, but still really awesome) updates in the Generations/Legends lines so I'd stay away from them. However, Dinobot, Cheetor, Tigatron, Airazor, Terrorsaur, Blackarachnia, Tarantulas, Scorponok, and especially Megatron all really need some proper toys. I think the concept should have been proven with any of those first, and then worked back to Optimus Primal, Rattrap, Rhinox and Waspinator. The problem with my idea is that Hasbro and Takara love to lead out with an Optimus toy, but I feel like in this case, that was a poor decision.

Another issue is ... why is it taking almost 1.5 years from when they first showed Beast Convoy/Optimus Primal from when we are actually going to get him? Is it going to take 1.5 years until we get Cheetor?

Also, god help me if they do BIG or Lio Convoy.... Regarding Seib's post. I agree that Primal wasn't the best choice for the first go. Though... if it "has to be a Prime" Lio Convoy would have been interesting... though I suppose it wouldn't have made a lot a sense to US fans....

I disagree, I think it sets a nice standard for what they aim to achieve with this sub-line/theme. I am of the opinion that, unless the beast mode looked like the show, there is no 'great' Primal. The went out of their way to demonstrate that they are aiming for a show-accurate beast mode and bot mode, while also fitting in whatever gimmicks or features they can from the toy; that, and Primal offered a challenge, but was doable for being the first in the series due to his relative bulk, plus as others have said he is iconic enough that he would have pretty good sales either way, thus ensuring continued interest in the line.

On the timing, I really think that was a case of something getting shown when they had barely scratched the surface of actually making the thing. Not something done often, but if some rumors are to be believed about Masterpiece there are a lot of designs in the pipe already in progress and some that are even conceptually finished and just waiting for licensing deals to close. Revealing some of that stuff now, way early, would probably lead to wait for that product like the length of the wait for Primal.

I'd also personally rather them lead out the line of Beast MPs with someone like Megatron, but let's be honest here, Takara is going to lead with some version of Convoy every time whenever possible. He's the face of the franchise, and probably seen as a "safe" play that will help other oddball stuff like Inferno keep happening. I imagine this is why there was a run of characters like Bumblebee and Ultra Magnus just before something like Tracks that's an iconic character but not on that A-tier within the brand.

No one is raving, but it was the one common complaint so far.

I just really hope, if this line continues (I have full faith it will) that Tigatron is NOT a slight remold of this. [-(

I wonder how easy that is? Would they just increase the size of the 3d model (with changed parts) and just send that to the thingy that turns it into molds for the factory?

But until we see them side by side, we won't know if they're making them scale :-s
