The mold itself, yeah, but Takara's deco was more toy-accurate than not, whereas the Hasbro version of the Voyager (which is also missing from this comparison) was IDW-based in both mold and deco.Randomhero wrote:Doesn't matter if you like the comics are not. I feel like we saw that picture somewhere..AND maybe I should wait until the eventual TwinCast redeco for even MORE "Headmasters" accuracy!! I mean, yeah, Blaster WAS in there, but he was only there for a few episodesprimalxconvoy wrote:I wonder if he can bend his arm enough to perch Blaster on/over his shoulder like a true 80's hero on the street would?

These all come from a Japanese listing which shows that, surprisingly, this toy is not at a much higher price point than the other Legends Leader figures, even though it towers them and has more retooling. The MSRP is 8500 Yen ($84 USD), which is only 500 yen higher than other leader figures (about a $5 difference), and he will retail anywhere between $57 and his MSRP in Japan.

In any case that Optimus head looks really nice. It's a pretty cool extra.

The charts aren't designed the map out every source of inspiration behind the new figures. They are mostly a tool to help decide which version to get (Hasbro or Takara) based on which is closer to the cartoon (or toy) since this is what I'm interested in. If a character has a Masterpiece figure I might throw it in for fun, to see how its cartoon-accuracy compares with the new figure.Randomhero wrote:Doesn't matter if you like the comics are not. It's like posting a comparison of apples and oranges and saying "I know I should compare an orange with a clementine but I don't like clementines"
If someone wants to make ones with the IDW designs they are certainly welcome to.

And Cyberpath, here is that image in colour:
Thanks, Will! But yeah, that's the one that I found, too. Unfortunately it's from the Marvel Comics profile pages; they tend to be more crude and don't always match the actual animation cels...
I considered painting the lineart from The Ark, but it seems that particular one was traced (rather poorly) from the Marvel Comic profile, so didn't think it was worth the effort of laying down the flats.
Wish there were a book with all the colour models from the Sunbow show.

Even if it's a mold that based directly on a non-cartoon comic design more than anything? In the case of Voyager Brainstorm, it's based on Nick Roche's MTMTE design, with the Hasbro version reflecting that in its deco while Takara tried coloring it more like the 1987 toy's deco. In this example, it's a mold sculpted to resemble neither the original toy nor any of the cartoon models, and is colored by both companies in non-cartoon-based decos.Cyberpath wrote:The charts aren't designed the map out every source of inspiration behind the new figures. Frankly, the Voyager might as well have been left out from this comparison altogether since it's not based on what you're interested in.

I am such a sucker for value and getting more ang for your buck and man even if I dont like those feet, this toy has that. I always assumed he'd be at a higher price point since TFSource is charging 95$ for him. That turns out to be 10$ more than the MSRP and its a nonsense figure, especially when they charge 75$ for Blaster. Probably curreny caught up to them in between the months.
Anyways, I thought he was a higher price point. But he isnt, and yet they give you all that retooling and he is huge compared to the Hasbro leader. Thats good value and I might jump on him now.

I'm stuck in a similar dilemma. This is currently what I am struggling with: what if Takara releases Godbomber to go with their Ginrai? Hasbro might do it for theirs, but what if one looks much better? It keeps happening in the RID line where a cool product gets released only to be outdone by and even better one.
Man I just wished I saw what they were all planning before i made my purchase.

Nope. I ignore the japanese continuity. That there is my updated Hi-Q no matter what it says on the box!
This is first time I've actually been excited about a G1 Optimus Prime since the original Powermaster figure (the only one of my original collection I still own).
Just wondering if I will repaint Prime's eyes red or not. I do prefer the red.
(base mode still looks like garbage but I won't use that anyways, especially as the main reason I used it on the original figure was for when using the smaller Prime figure formed from the cab which this doesn't do)

No, just the fact it's called LG35 Ginrai kind of hints that that's what's gonna be printed on the box

That varies from place to place. His real name on the site with this listing was actually Super Jinrai with a J. So I dont know if that will be there too. The main reason I dontk now anymore is because a lot of Convoys have become Optimus in English on the Japanese boxes.

But Ginrai isn't a Convoy. Japan knows he's not the same character as Optimus like Convoy is. They're the ones who made the distinction in the first place.william-james88 wrote:Kurona wrote:No, just the fact it's called LG35 Ginrai kind of hints that that's what's gonna be printed on the box

And outside of special cases like Scorponok/MegaZarak and Fortress/Fortress Maximus, the little Headmasters don't get their own unique names in Japanese fiction, as they're the same identity as the larger bodies. The little Headmaster here is still Ginrai just as the Transtector body is Ginrai (though, in this case, this toy represents Ginrai's Double On mode Super Ginrai, as the normal Ginrai transtector cab is fully integrated with the trailer this time around).

I see. But in this case, Ginrai doesn't have an English name (outside of some DVD subtitles that just used the Japanese name).william-james88 wrote:I didn't mean that. Was just giving examples about English names on the box that weren't the Japanese names. Like when convoy is written as optimus. LG 02 is a good example.

This is an example of how going too G1 works against a figure. Just replace those weird "stilts" with the original Hasbro feet, and Ginrai would be absolutely perfect. Here's hoping there's a way to at least fiddle with those weird foot struts to make them angle out a bit more.

Japan etymology has Gin as silver. So Silver or something shiny. Rai is like thunder. So "silver thunder" or Shining Thunder? Kind of reminds me of one of Starscream's nick name "silver snake".

Japanese has only one character set (hira- + katakana) per sound, however English uses multiple, which is why proper translations are difficult at times (see "Gregevor" vs. "Greejeeber", same pronunciation). Standard transliterations use the "g" as the voiced "k" (like in "get"), but English uses it for the "j"-sound as well (like "gee").
The proper transliteration, and pronunciation, for his name is "Jinrai", but since the "g" can do double duty, TakaraTomy spells it as "Ginrai", just cause. "Gin" (with the soft "k") does indeed mean silver (in compounds), but that's not part of the meaning for "Jinrai/Ginrai"
Besides, names in katakana (most if not all Transformer names are in katakana) are hardly ever translated, since they're mostly proper nouns or loanwords.

It is a soft "G". The "Gin" in Ginrai is ジン, literally "Jin". It's not 銀 or ぎん "Gin", which would be the silver you're thinking of. Also, "gin" and "jin" phonetically can have several meanings, so without a kanji ascribed to them to give them meaning it's a nonsense name.
But going back to the point there's no reason to assume the headmaster will be referred to as Hi-Q or anything other than just Ginrai. The head IS Ginrai, the body is just a transtector (originally meant for Optimus Prime but that's another story). Referring to it as Hi-Q in news posts is incorrect until proven otherwise, and misleading. None of the other Legends headmasters have given their heads separate names on the packaging, I don't expect Super Ginrai to be an exception.

Also I agree the Takara colours are FAR superior to the Hasbro ones, it still might be worth buying both for the sake of the remoulded pieces though.
I do however still think the G1 toy is a better "toy" it does more and has more play features - the flat ramps also mean it play integrates with little cars much nicer too.
I'd like there to be a Grand Maximus repaint if only as I don't have him in any form at all that might fit in nice with some future potential repaints that might get made too.
------
It is a shame they no longer make Ultra scale as if they did that might be a nice size to use for the likes of : Ape Face, Snapdragon, Double Dealer and also Dreadwind & Darkwing. Though Double Dealer would make a great leader - especially if they put a lot of effort into a sexy bird mode and maybe relented and made actual "Powermasters" as well.

Actually, Ginrai's name was made up - in a way that, in Japanese, if you remove every second syllable it spells Godzilla.
As an aspiring writer this sort of shit is what inspires me. There's no real reason for it. It doesn't really link into the theming of Masterforce as far as I'm aware. They just did it because Godzilla.

I think Jinrai (or Ginrai) works just great as a Japanese boys name - I've long suspected that Anakin will be a regular boys name that people forget was made up for a Movie by the 22nd Century.
Leia is normalised already - though I'm not sure if that was a legit name or not anyway when I first heard it I always took it as a bastardised version of other names like Laia & Leia & Leaha but it is a legit name supposedly as Luke was.. Leia is actually Hebrew curiously.
But I don't think people automatically think Star Wars when they hear it. so I do wonder could someone "Get away" with Ginrai in Japan ?
