This follows the teasing of the Terrorcons in the latest chapter of the Selects Manga that accompanies the line and is uploaded to the Takara Tomy Mall site.
It is expected that Abominus will be an animation accurate version of the Power of the Primes Terrorcon molds but Takara could still pull a few surprises at this stage if they wished. Given the time between Volcanicus's tease and reveal, we will be seeing more of this combiner soon.
What do you think of this? Will you be trading in your PotP Abominus? Or is the cash going to be spent elsewhere? Let us know in the Energon Pub and stay tuned to Seibertron for all the latest news and reviews!

So much for brands unification, eh?

aronjlove wrote:So if this is Unite Warriors for the PotP line, is there a chance of them doing Orthia, or is she not well known enough overseas? I'd definitely double-dip on her so I could have the individuals and the combiner.
I would argue that Orthia isn't well known anywhere.
This definitely seems to be cartoon colors judging from the red visor. I'm more than happy to double dip since the colors should look more different between the two than the two Volcanicus (which I begrudgingly pre-ordered from Pulse).

Maybe we'll get a few figures of overlooked characters from Combiner Wars/Unite Warriors like Sideswipe or Hoist? Or, even better, how about a proper "Megascream" with Thundercracker, Skywarp, and recolors of Dreadwind and Darkwing as Buster and Hydra? There are some intriguing possibilities.
I would be ok with any of those, just not sure how a straight up Abominus repaint gets us there.
It's no guarantee, but things are trending in the right direction. We started with just Volcanicus, which could have been a fluke. Now we're getting Abominus too, right on the heels of the sudden Volcanicus announcement. It feels like a Unite Warriors "redo" of Power of the Primes is happening with Takara Tomy. Those were the only two complete teams released in PotP, besides Titan Class Predaking. Takara might make actual teams for the remaining "torsos" without dedicated "limbs," like Elita-1, Starscream, and Inferno. Takara Tomy has done such before, transforming the one-off combiner torso Cyclonus in Combiner Wars into his own dedicated team in Unite Warriors as Grand Galvatron.

Though, one could also argue that, despite Takara keeping Cyclonus as Cyclonus, they colored the torso mode uniquely enough to make Grand Galvatron his own distinct combiner from Galvatronus, justifying the double dip on the Hasbro and Takara versions of Cyclonus.Wolfman Jake wrote:Takara might make actual teams for the remaining "torsos" without dedicated "limbs," like Elita-1, Starscream, and Inferno. It's odd, and a bit contradictory on my part I'll admit, but most of the time, I take straight up repaints to be the "same" character. Thus why I only bought Grand Galvatron (and not CW Cyclonus). However... I did make 2 different combiners from UW Optimus and CW Battle Core Optimus. I also somehow justified 3 different Scattershots in the same Universe (Single CW release as Modulus, CW Box Set as "Betatron", and UW as Computron proper)
I guess it's all mental. If I were into seekers instead of Combiners, I would blow a gasket at 10 different colored Starscreams, but take 10 of the same seeker mold and name them different characters, and I'm good.

Well they were going for the 2 different decos of Galvatron, right? I mean, I don't recall Cyclonus being silver and blue anywhere. But he may have been...?Sabrblade wrote:Though, one could also argue that, despite Takara keeping Cyclonus as Cyclonus, they colored the torso mode uniquely enough to make Grand Galvatron his own distinct combiner from Galvatronus, justifying the double dip on the Hasbro and Takara versions of Cyclonus.Wolfman Jake wrote:Takara might make actual teams for the remaining "torsos" without dedicated "limbs," like Elita-1, Starscream, and Inferno. UW Cyclonus in his robot and vehicle modes is in cartoon colors. CW Cyclonus is in his toy colors.Rodimus Prime wrote:Well they were going for the 2 different decos of Galvatron, right? The figure is a redeco of the Deluxe Class Micromaster Base Air Wave from Transformers: Earthrise, and brings us up to two Micromaster bases on both Autobot and Decepticon sides. Unlike Selects Greasepit from Earthrise Ironworks (who received a small bit of retooling), Hot House is a straight up redeco of Air Wave.

Even if I did get the other UW sets I'm just not going to get this one. Not only do I already have the Hasbro version, but there's just too much I want in Earthrise and Kingdom. There's just no room for all these extras.
I do wonder if they'll do Orthia. The characters are obscure, but maybe that's part of the appeal. It is for me.

The one good thing is this comes out so soon after Volcanicus, not 6 months apart like most Combiners. Hopefully this will leave time for a new Selects release still to come later in 2021.

The rest were decal changes (Terrorcons), but for Hun-Gurr? its different.

Now if only they redesigned Motormaster and rereleased the Stunticons...

Apparently a Call of the Primitives head would just be too awesome to ever happen in toy form.
Volcanicus-Reduxus is a hard pass for me, but this set being announced so soon after is getting me more excited for the possibility of Selects Monster Pretenders and Dinoforce in the near future.

Wait.
There's that shield chest plate and a kinda big gun. Nice, but not 300$ nice.

I really like the new chestplate ("shield"), but the hands and feet are both mehhh imo, especially compared to the add-on kit I have.
This is seriously $300?? If so, pshhhhhhhh.
I feel kinda bad for people who missed the POTP version...
He's probably my favorite combiner out of all of them, but I thought it was a lot to pay $90+ to get them. Anything over $120-ish, is a pretty big ouch.

I really like the color of the combined head and the new chest, they look really nice.
Like Volcanicus with the swords, I am satisfied with what I have but would like to cherry pick a couple of parts.
Sowndwave76 wrote:This is seriously $300?? If so, pshhhhhhhh.
Canadian dollars maybe. USD it'll probably be the same price as God Neptune and Volcanicus on Pulse, around $185

Based on Volcanicus at Age 3 and Up, it's 300$CAN. So I expect this Abominus to be the same price as Volcanicus on Pulse.

I really liked the POTP Terrorcons (I was VERY happy they weren't left out of the main line of "combiners") but there was still room for improvement. It's too bad Takara didn't opt for any alterations on the actual figures.
I always thought POTP Rippersnapper's "wolverine" claws were a bit cheap - why not give him something more in line with what Blot has, and make the claws the same colour as the rest of his arms, instead of that awful neon blue? That would be more cartoon accurate, too.
Also, I wish they had fixed Hun-Grr's front legs... As they are, they're just so... dinky...

So am I. I think Hasbro did an amazing job with the set initially in terms of deco. There are things I think are off but they are not related to the deco or the feet.

Barricade though... I’m sold.

Is the Takara release objectively better? Yes.
Is it worth paying slightly more? Yes.
If this had been announced around the same time as the original Hasbro figures, would I have bought this instead? Probably.
Am I going to buy it and try to sell my existing figures? No, not worth the effort or the return on that effort.

In addition to the ones seen on TakaraTomy Mall, we get some individual shots of the monster modes and more posed pics of the robot modes and combined mode.
Posted by bodrock on October 7th, 2020 @ 11:45am CDT
Mainly because I would have preferred they do that in the first place.
If anything, make it Shattered Glass or a Black version, and I'd understand.
Posted by Lexomatic on October 7th, 2020 @ 12:40pm CDT
"Fuse their weapons" is the logical extension of the "fuse robots into a bigger robot" gimmick, but I've never seen a good execution outside Victorion's sword (2016), and that only worked because the sword came first and then fragmented into components that were Bionicle-style fantasy edged weapons. But with the Terrorcons, there's no unity, in color or shape ... I might be convinced if the guns were all black with a character-oriented trim color (nothing a little paint can't fix) and the barrels were compacted into a single gatling-style cluster.

Yeah, sorry, that was based on a post I saw...
After seeing those comparison shots, especially Hun-gurr, it is more tempting...
As someone else said, if they were sold separately, I'd be 100% in for him.

So like Volcanicus, redeco with new-ish accessories. This I'm definitely passing on, I just want that big gun.
