i do love a black repaint. My bright purple slug just got thrown over my shoulder to land in the trash through a tiny, comedy basketball hoop to make space on the shelf for this bad boy.

I will probably regret that, when i find out the only way i can buy it is importing it at great personal cost, waiting months for it to arrive only for it to be seized by Royal Mail until i pay the import tax and £20 ransom fee.

I really can't tell if this is supposed to be Takara's answer to a movie-accurate redeco of this mold, or if they just wanted to do it in black for fun.

It's like Takara wanted some kind of exclusive deco, but couldn't find s decent toy to put it on. Welcome to the Age of Extinction toyline.

More like, "We already have an Optimus toy, what do we do with the Power Attacker to avoid duplicate characters outside of Grimlock?"

Wouldn't be a repaint to Japan, as they never got the Power Attacker Optimus in some form until now. They did get the One-Step as an exclusive.

My point is that it doesn't make much sense to take a toy designed for pre-schoolers and give it a paint job that appeals to collectors. The audience for one-step changers probably don't know who Nemesis Prime even is. It's a strange combination. Then again, Japan is a strange country. ;)

So wait, he has 4 arms? 2 of which just sort of sprout out of nowhere for the gimmick attack?

And yeah, it's weird making a collector-orientated version of a kiddie toy.

Or from any other general retail black repaint, like Armada Nemesis Prime (Scourge was exclusive however) and Arms Micron Nemesis Prime.

Except those were figures from the main toy line, aimed at all TF fans, as opposed to toys that were specifically designed for young children who probably have never even heard of "Nemesis Prime". How would pre-schoolers be familiar with Nemesis Prime? Was he a featured character in TF Animated or Rescue Bots?

This is the main line in Japan. Lost Age Series. The Movie Advanced Series is the secondary line to this one in Japan. And practically all of the Lost Age Series toys have premium collector-aimed decos with metallic paint and everything.

And how would preschoolers in Japan even know about Rescue Bots anyway? Or Animated, for that matter, since that one might have been before their time over there.

No, not solely Power Battlers, the entire Lost Age Series line contains molds from all of the simplistic toys: 1 Step Changers, Power Battlers, Flip & Change Grimlock, and the Takara-made Battle Command Optimus Prime.

Those toys are the ones being marketed under the name of the movie, while the Movie Advanced Series is the other line for the Japanese that contains the AOE Generations molds.

Then, the in-hand robot mode pictures showed up... #-o :-(

Check out below official images for LA-15 Grimlock (Power Battlers), LA-16 Slug (Power Battlers), LA-17 Snarl (Power Battlers), LA-18 Galvatron (Power Battlers), and LA-SP a multi-pack of One-Step figures including Silver Knight Optimus Prime, Galvatron, Slug, and helicopter Drift.

Apparently so. This is the main line for the movie in Japan, branded under the movie's name for its label, with the Movie Advanced Series being the secondary line.

Get a load of how Takara's marketing it:

I have slog and really like his mold. Just be careful with his dino-head when transforming into bot mode. The sliver paint on the nose got rubbed off a little bit on mine because I tried to press it too much into the back.

Other than that, I really enjoy this bruiser dinobot in both modes. Better than Grimlock IMO.

A flyer that was included with the newly released LA-13 Battle Attack Nemesis Prime includes our first color look at AD-31 Armor Knight Optimus Prime. The images are thanks to Autobase Aichi. This is a heavily retooled version of the Age of Extinction Leader Class Optimus Prime. The retool includes a new head, chest, arms, weapons as well as a premium paint job.
