Seibertron is live at the SDCC 2013 preview night, and we now have additional images of Transformers Generations Voyager Class Whirl and Deluxe Class Dreadwing! As previously stated in the first look story, Voyager Class Whirl was shown in prototype form at the Hasbro panel during last month's BotCon. As you can see the figure sports a very G1 appearance. We also have images of Dreadwing, a remold/redeco of the soon to be released Deluxe IDW styled Stealth Bomber Megatron. Other Generations figures on display include the following, which were previously on display at BotCon.

  • Voyager Doubledealer
  • Voyager Rhinox
  • Deluxe Goldfire
  • Deluxe Skids
  • Deluxe Thundercracker
  • Deluxe Waspinator
  • Deluxe Hoist

No offense meant to anyone who likes the figure, but every new Generations toy I see reaffirms my recent decision to stop collecting everything except Masterpiece, the quality just doesn't seem to be there anymore when comparing these figures to those that come from earlier in the "classics" lines :-(

'cept Metroplex of course ;)

I too was hoping for a MTMTE design.

Oh well. BRING ON THE BUILD-A-BOT RESULTS!

No offense taken, but I respectfully disagree. At least in the voyagers' case - Springer is nearly indisputably awesome, and I love Blitzwing all the same. Guess we'll have to wait for Whirl to release before we get a final verdict either way.

I love how people are making decisions about it's "quality" and "size" when we haven't had it in hand or even SEEN IT next to anything well enough to compare it's size to yet.

Well that is horrible. I thought these were suppose to be IDW style figures. Man and I was so excited for IDW Whirl.

Good lord, I really hope Whirl is mistransformed. Something about his head just doesn't look right, either.

And actually, Dreadwing was on display at BotCon. ;) On that note: good Lord, he's even more mistransformed than he was at BotCon! :BANG_HEAD:

I'm kinda liking that Whirl, even though I'd much prefer a MtMtE version. That back shot has me worried the whole main rotor section could fall out a lot, reminds me too much of that dreadful RotF Blazemaster mold.

Seeing that Dreadwing makes me wonder how properly transformed everyone else is...

This.

I mean, I could understand comments like "Hey, I think it looks good/bad because x, y, and z. And I like/dislike that it looks like IDW/G1 Whirl instead of ___ Whirl. Also I'm concerned about the weirdness with the shoulder struts, but I would assume that's some manner of mistransformation."

Comments like that? I totally get. But it's just silly to comment on the "quality" of a thing you know nothing about, unless you're from the future and have a production sample on hand.

The reason they couldn't do MTMTE Whirl is the fact that not only his skinny, curved legs would be hard to articulate, he'd be as top-heavy as Mega-class Cheetor, if not more-so. They could've done his pre-MTMTE design, though.

They could have easily put a new head and paint on the old generations springer and had MtMtE Whirl done really nice.

Chicken legs ala Movie Starscream? Interesting. Did he have his legs like that in any media? I haven't read any of the comics, sadly. :-(

So far, Whirl is a pass. I still like the Whirl repaint of Blackout with the custom Whirl head. What they really need to make is a decent Roadbuster for once. Like All Hail Megatron big.

I'm sure that, once transformed properly, that Whirl will be sweet. I'm liking most of what I see of it already. It triggers a G1 feeling, and I'm not sure why exactly, but it's the only one out of all the Generations unveils that I actually want to own. The rest are take it or leave it (reasons varying from crappy figure to already owning that mold/character) The Beast wars figures look the best so far, but I don't collect Transformers with organic beast modes.

Oh, and Trailbreak is awesome, so Hoist is as well.

I am no longer interested in Metroplex. Not until I can first own a Unicron that trumps it in size.

Well, I for one really like him, and his GI Apache (Cobra?... not the villans, the helicopter) alt mode, but the shoulders worry me, and there's absolutely no attempt to hide rbot parts here the engine pods, and would itg have killed someone to put some kind of folding cover over his upper thighs to hid his waist joint in helicopter mode? Energon Bulkhead did it... Even something like Animated Megatron's leg covers would've been a little more effective than him running around with his thighs showing. And I do hope there's a better placve to mount those guns.

But then, I love that Whirl co,mes with FOUR different weapons.

Now, here's hoping for a Rotorstorm repaint!!

Bought...On...Sight!

I'm glad they went this direction with him. I was so horribly disappointed with the repaint treatment they gave the combiner Wreckers and honestly, attempting to make the toys in exactly the same style as their MTMTE and RID comic counterparts would frustrate the toy designers and be a discredit to the comic artists when the finished product rolled out. This, going back to the basics of G1 designs, is going to make a LOT of collectors very happy. This is what the Classics/Generations line is all about anyways. Paying tribute to the originals but with some update to the design/articulation and I think this works splendidly. Those of you bitching about his appearance obviously don't seem to care that the "Generations" label is boldly displayed at the top of the packaging. Go back to your Mega-Zords if you want something totally unrelated to the origins of this franchise.

Now bring on Road Buster and give us Twin Twist and Top Spin done RIGHT because the combiner versions of all those figures were just insulting.

This is certainly a surprise. I was totally expecting to see the designs from the MTMTE comics, just like Springer.

Despite the mistransformation, it looks like it could look pretty good. I just hope that shortened tail in alt mode is also a mistransformation.

Not a fan of the G1 colors, to be honest.

If I can get my hands on the more affordable Hasbro version, as opposed to the Takara versions my hobby store tends to bring in, this thing is getting repainted in olive drab for an original character custom.

I really like the look of Whirl. There is at least some minor mistransformation happening on the display but basically, it looks like it is very much hearkening back to the G1 toy design. I'm very curious about the transformation for the toy.

Well he does appear to possibly have trigger created propeller spinning in alt mode, that's important right? :P

I'll buy it and may end up liking it. The thing about a Rotorstorm reprint could be cool, but with the club doing MW Sandstorm using the DOTM Skyhammer mold, I'd rather see the club also tackle Rotorstorm and give him a new head. It would be a nice circular relationship similar to how the Rotorstorm mold was originally reprinted into MW Sandstorm.

Anyway, this makes all of my 3 rd party Whirl kits now useless.

For me, this is one of the most exciting reveals this year. G1 Whirl was one of my favorites, and one of the few larger figures to survive my childhood. I've been trying to buy the "Classic" version of every one of my remaining childhood TFs, and Whirl is one of the holes I have left to fill. (heh heh)

The fact that he resembles the original so much is just icing on the cake! I'm super excited for this figure.

This has just re-affirmed not getting FOC repaints. While there are things that could be better obviously, I feel this mold is as good as it's going to get for the forseable future. He can stand by Generations Springer, Universe Roadbuster, and Classics Ultra Magnus.

I'm all over this. After the Botcon news I figured he would be more MTMTE, but I'm actually happy he's not. The current comic design is a little too weird for me. I love the G1-inspired look. Reminds me of Energon Bulkhead, which is actually a good thing to me. I'm sure he's a bit mistransformed, but I definitely like what I see. :D

Now here's the thing, he looks so very much like the original toy which along with its design is still owned by Bandai.
So wouldn't this be pretty much the exact same thing as all the 3rd Party figures by FP, iGear, and co, which are apparently so very very evil?

I still don't understand why this is based on the original toy instead of the idw design like most of the other figures, I thought Generations current incarnation was supposed to be idw.

That said I still think he looks epic.

It's a mix of both the G1 design and the IDW design. The head and legs are IDW-based, while the rest of it is G1 Whirl.

The design of this figure and your argument completely deflates others' speculation that MP Soundwave could not be done because Takara/Hasbro do not own the rights to the original toy.

Last I checked Soundwave's original toy originated from Takara's Microchange toyline. If Takara didn't own the rights to that, we probably wouldn't have gotten an MP Megatron, or reissues of either of the originals for that matter.
