I would guess there is a rubix cube inside his head but the details make it sound like his head itself is a slide puzzle.
I agree, it sounds like his head should be the puzzle but I don't see how it could possibly have as many variables as a normal Rubik's Cube, especially considering there don't appear to be enough seams/divisions. I get the feeling it's just an ordinary Rubik's Cube inside an Optimus-shaped head... A fancy "display stand" that justifies Hasbro charging more for it than an ordinary Rubik's Cube?

I don't think it's that because they say the puzzle is shaped like Optimus' head. Now that I think about it it would have to be because if the head was merely a container how would you show off that you solved the rubix? Then again it could be something to hide a rubix cube you can't solve inside to prevent frustration
I also thought about being like a 2x2 but it does not have enough seams from what I am able to see. Maybe his helmet line is hiding a seam?

What is that thing and how do I keep it away from myself? Aside from that nightmare enducing decapitated cranial crusher, <s>the Optimus cube is most likely concealing the seem with his mouthplate, possibly giving a genuine transformation element to him<s> he probably has helmet that makes it look somewhat ok.
Note to self, look at the image a few more time before making an assumption.

Those star wars puzzles are from an amazing time when little toys and surprises came in cereal boxes.
There was a whole set of them.
Anyways, the seams for the 4X4 puzzle are right down the middle and the seam between his face and his helmet, making it look natural. You can see that horizontal seam better by looking at the sides where his helmet is split.

Also, anybody else think Rubimus Prime has a bit of a Dilated pupil look to him? Like he just got slapped in the face with a board?

Unless you guys are masters at the 3X3 rubik's cube (the standard one), this one will still pose quite the challenge. Like the 3X3, a 2X2 rubik's cube needs an algorythm to be solved. You guys forget the three dimensional aspect of the 4 seperate pieces which means they can end up anywhere in different orientations, like these 2X2s below:
People selling em on e-bay have given up:

william-james88 wrote:Not speaking for those who can easily solve a 3X3 rubick's cube, but a 2X2 cube like this is not that easy. I have been struggling all week tryng to figure out my own 2X2 shaped as darth vader. While its essentially the same thing, the fact that this toy is sculpted as a face makes it even more challenging since the idea of a "side" is less easy to distinguish. And all rubick's tutorials are based on flat cube surfaces so youtube wont be much help. Maybe I just suck at this stuff, but I find puzles like this one super challenging and I do want to prepare those who have no experience and think that it looks simple. Its not.
I can't blame you man. I have had a 3x3 for a few years and I still have trouble with it at times. Some people are amazing at solving cubes but I have problems memorizing all the algorithms.
But at least the puzzle being shaped like Optimus' head will prevent anyone from throwing it in frustration.

It wont look like anything once people shuffle him and try to solve him. I am looking forward to what that looks like actually. All pics will be welcome

I am debating getting one. Knowing my aunt she might pick one up for my birthday this summer.
I'm hard to shop for and my family hardly ever buys me actual figures. "I don't know which one to buy you." "All the ones I see are Bumblebee, I can't find your ambulance guy."

Just posting in the sightings section would be enough, even if you cannot get a picture.
