Wonderfest gave us a look at the Bearbrick
Age of Extinction Optimus Prime redeco , in robot mode, and now
Japanese retailer CJ Mart bring us our first official images of the figure in both modes.
This toy from Takara Tomy and Medicom, uses the same mold as the
first Be@rbrick Optimus Prime, but in a deco reminiscent of the live action movies, in particular Age of Extinction. It will be released this month.

Why does this thing even exist ? Is this the result of when Japanese toy designers drink too much sake ?

Different market, different taste, if they can sell it then why not?

I will post this in other places too just so that people see it, but it turns out figures like these are super popular in Asia and Japan, as can be seen with them being among the top preorders on Japan exclusive sites:

That is the most stupid looking figure ever. Yeah I know, in Japan they like cute cuddly robots. But knowing that wont stop us from wondering why they like them...

These would be some much more enticing if they weren't absurdly expensive.

They could make little toilets that transform into prime, megs, bee, etc. and people will buy them.

These look really Mickey Mouse like. I'd hate to think what we'd be getting if Disney owned Transformers

It has been ages since we
last heard about Medicom's Bearbrick Transformers figures - licensed transforming figures that change from bears to our favourite Cybertronians - now, two years later, we have images,
pre-orders and estimated arrival dates (2nd quarter of 2017) for the three new characters: Age of Extinction (inorite) Optimus Prime, Nemesis Prime, and Starscream. Check them out below!

Wasn't Starscream already released? Or is the deco on this one different?

Yeah, I'm fairly certain it was.

Bumblebee, Optimus, Megatron & Starscream were released before.
I think the Movie deco Optimus and Nemesis Prime are new though.
(at least to me - unless they were an obscure exclusive)

All of them have been released before, but Nemesis Prime was a tad more limited, being exclusive to Lawson and its online subsidiary HMV.

These are pretty cool, but are they still prohibitively expensive for what they are (basically scout class figures)?

If you thought the Bearbrick Transformers were niche, wait till you get a load of this one. It is a redeco of Bearbrick Optimus Prime but in the BAPE camo look. We have seen this deco come up quite a bit in the past with Optimus Prime, like the MP release. For those unaware,
BAPE is a clothing store in Japan specializing in a more urban style and they collaborate with Takara Tomy quite often. This toy was released in August of this year and is only found in Japan in their stores as well as some online stores, as described in their blurb below:
From A BATHING APE®︎ comes a special 200% sized (approx. 145mm tall) Transformers figure, created in collaboration with MEDICOM TOY, Japan's world-renowned toy manufacturer, and Takara TOMY, a toy manufacturer with a huge following for its various contents!!
The A BATHING APE® x BE@RBRICK x TRANSFORMERS figure is equipped with a mechanism to transform into Optimus Prime, the commander-in-chief of the Autobots, and each of its joints has a wide range of motion, making it possible to smoothly transform from a conventional bear-shaped toy into the realistic Optimus Prime. The bright green color that adorns the entire figure is a reprint of the TRANSFORMERS MP CONVOY BAPE® VERSION that was released in the past. The arms feature BAPE®'s original camouflage, ABC CAMO, and the brand's iconic APE HEAD.
This is a special item that can be used not only as an interior decoration, but can also be held and played with, with the brand's attention to detail incorporated throughout.
This collection is sold exclusively at Japan A BATHING APE® authorized stores and web stores. It will also be available at all Medicom Toy stores and online stores.

For those unaware of the brand, the chap behind it, "Nigo", has collaborated with British, Japanese and American urban, hip-hop, big-beat, etc artists.
For example, this was from ones of his collaboration albums, and, just like the brand, and its logo, it features various sound and music samples from the original "Planet of the Apes", including "Ape Shall Not Kill Ape!" :
