I find these more worthless personally. At least with previous TM's I could ignore them cos they weren't based on characters I cared about but these? They is spitting on my Pretender dreams.
Personally, I'm VERY happy with these. The Pretenders themselves were pretty niche characters and the only updates we got so far are only transformable hommages. But the concept of the "decoy armor" is pretty neat and logical. Especially for biology based characters. Also, those little guys have the same shape as the original and their sizes make the perfect minions to go with my G1 Fortmax and Scorponok.
Maybe if the Prime Masters sell like hotcakes would maybe revive the pretenders properly. Maybe testing the waters with a MP Bludgeon?

And the excuse that their too obscure is bull considering the Pretenders themselves are obscure and so is many of the Generations characters.
(Like what kid has heard of Krok or Quake? Getaway or Shuffler?)
The Pretender figures themselves are nice though, having plenty of fun with them and I'm using their "engine" modes as a mind control head thing that takes over Transactors.
(This was the only way we were going to get Pretenders back that worked with the suit gimmick considering how disliked the old ones were.)

Kanra has some great pics with the two flavors mixed! I've had a lot of fun with the Skullgrins.
With the Petender-esque PotP Optimal comin', I'm a bit more tempted...perhaps MP-32 could stand-in until his evolution.

I dont mind and I will tell you why, he does still come with a gorilla alt mode. Its the alt mode of the bigger bot, sure, but at least I can still say I get a gorilla alt mode when purchasing the leader. 2 gorillas is better than one, of course, but we still get a solid 1

Thanks kanra and bod great pictures as always...and slightly jealous that you have the original pretenders. When I was young I had one of the ultra pretenders (the ones who hid inside a transformable shell that hid inside a shell of a vehicle which had a feature that interacted with the inside robot), can't remember his name but he had a green vehicle with a gun placement up top, and the inner robot looked a lot like a redco of landmine but had an awesome looking pretender shell that turned into a flying car...thing. I miss him, my parents sold him at a car boot sale without my knowledge.

Nice, Zerowolf! That sounds like one of my faves - Roadblock!
I only recently hunted these Pretenders down for my collection, and I never even knew he existed beforehand. I am hoping we see the Ultra Pretenders redone somehow....does PotP Optimal count?

As for optimal...I think he's a good take for a pretender of a sorts (inner robot hides in outer shell which can transform on its own and interact with the inner robot in alt mode...just no larger shell for the big monkey mode to hide in)
I think there is potential for a full look into the pretender gimmick, especially if it meant we got a proper monstructor out of it!

I'm definitely hoping for Monstructor! I'm certainly happy to get an update for Abominus, but I'd buy a boxset for Monstructor in a heartbeat.
I'm surprised they haven't announced more Prime Masters...you'd think Diver would be an easy choice for them. :/

I think he was referring to the war for cybertron line, but I agree with you that PotP has been rushed out of the door. The significance of this though is unknown (other than Hasbro wanting one line to last just twelve months)
Edit: I swear my spelling is getting worse these days

Especially since the decoy armour already exists as that was going to be the Base for grand's pretender shell for grand maximus's lg-ex release, so that means the mold is there for him...
Edit: not sure why the quotes messed up there, fixed for now.

To be fair I don't know what other gimmick they could have gone with after CW and TR, Targetmasters are not really that much of a gimmick with the base figure alone and with how Hasbro accessories usually are I don't think we would have gotten Targetmasters packed in with deluxe figures, Powermasters could have worked but their not that different from Headmasters and also same deal with them being accessories.
Pretenders as they are only particularity work on the small scale. (Not the characters but the gimmick)

A neat idea actually, reminds me of the TR customs I've seen that do use CW molds as a base.

I pray that's just because that's an expensive chain and supermarket ones like Walmart or Chedraui will have them for less, I can't keep up collecting with those prices.

I still really like my Optimal, but if I see the update in-stores, I will probably impulse buy.
Posted by King Kuuga on April 9th, 2018 @ 6:33am CDT
I popped my deluxe POTP cherry with Slug when Target had them for sale for $15. I had hoped to find the other figures I wanted at that price but it was not to be, so I gave in after confirming the sale was over and went hunting for the rest. I grabbed Grimlock, Swoop, Sludge, Snarl, Moonracer, and Rippersnapper at various points, as well as Battleslash and Roadtrap, AND the wave 2 Prime Masters on closeout at Kroger the day after Easter. They were $4.50 each, which while only 49 cents below MSRP, is $2.49 less than Kroger's initial price, and also probably the lowest PMs will be for a bit, barring anomalies like the apparent Walmart clearances on wave 1 PMs.
A note about hunting for these Prime Masters: they will be buried in the closeout/clearance section of the store. At mine, it's just two shelf lengths full of whatever crap is damaged, no longer carried, near the expiration, out of package, etc. It's not really organized, so you'll probably have to dig through piles of miscellany or the bins on the bottom shelf, and a week after Easter I can't guarantee somebody else won't have snapped them up by now, but nothing ventured and all. I work overnight and I was able to grab them when they had temporarily tossed all the unsold marked down Easter toys in a shopping cart. Unfair advantage maybe, but I wasn't about to miss this chance.
Anyway, if you're keeping count, I now have all the new wave 2 stuff except Blackwing (I may grab him and Dreadwind down the road as limbs for Elita), Tailgate (gonna pick up a T30 eventually) and the voyagers (still looking). And despite all odds, EVERY ONE OF MY DINOBOTS except Slash have the same Prime card. Here's some pics!
Seriously. Five Quintus Prime cards. You can't make this up.
Who knew the Dinobots were so passionate about seeding life?
Powered up! I don't really like the look of the Prime Armor for display purposes but it is silly fun to do this.
"Welcome.... to Dinobot Park!"
Volcanicus in the official configuration from the instructions. Slash is giving moral support.
My preferred configuration. and some Prime Master fun.
All my POTP stuff so far
I know i was super skeptical about Grimlock from the pictures, but having him in hand, his problems just don't seem to matter. His tail doesn't bother me all that much, his dino proportions aren't so bad, his torso mode is (mostly) good..... except for those legs. He tries to do a Motormaster split but doesn't have the locking tabs so there's not a certain position they fit just right at. Also similar to Motormaster, I think Grimlock's hip ratchets are not aligned to each other. I can't seem to get his legs to even out. Has anybody else experienced this? I'll probably keep them in Dinobot mode most of the time, but Volcanicus does look good.
Moonracer is pretty good as well. I love how she looks in robot mode, her backpack is a bit unwieldy but it's ligthweight and her feet are big so it's not that big a deal. I noticed that using her prime armor was starting to hip the paint on her chest, so I'm not doing that anymore. It ruins her figure anyway. I'll also never use her as a leg, as others have said. I don't trust that connection. And this got asked about 10 pages ago, never responded to. Does anybody know what those tabs on the underside of her alt mode are for? I can't find a purpose and they affect her ground clearance.
Lastly, I may be in a minority here, but I don't think Battletrap is all that. The helicopter landing gear/Batleslash's heel spurs mean he can't hold Prime Master weapons, the primary feature of the line. His combined leg articulation is hindered by Roadtrap's arms a bit. The helicoptor rotor just sitting on the back is a shame. Roadtrap definitely feels like the weaker of the two, his arms can't move as much as I'd like in robot mode, and his vehicle mode is the front half of a truck and the chest of a robot. Kinda laughable. Maybe I'm just not quite getting it because I have no nostalgic attachment to Battletrap, I dunno. They're nice but I feel like $20 was too much for two tiny dudes that essentially become a deluxe. Then again, I think $10 is too much for Legends in general. I'd be more amenable to $8, but what can you do.
So yeah. I bought one and then one thing led to another and now my POTP collection has rapidly expanded and I don't even mind that much. Bring on Elita and the rest of the terrorcons!

I feel the same way. I keep telling the brand team that I want Pretenders. They probably think I'm crazy. But I really want to see the Pretenders done with modern toy technology, whether it's the traditional concept for with a modern action figure type "shell" with inner robot, or with an "inner" robot that can transform into a vehicle AND becomes armor to upgrade the action figure "shell" character (in lieu of fitting in an actual shell). I really don't care about the robot actually being able to go inside a "shell" as long as the robot somehow can "hide" away by either integrating inside of the shell or by becoming an upgrade set for the "shell". I quoted the word "shell" because I'm referencing the humanoid shell character/figure versus the inner robot character/figure.
I think someone will come up with an exciting way to redo these characters at some point that will honor their heritage properly. The Pretenders really struck a chord with me on many levels from their introduction in the comics, to being the first mainline concept to be excluded from the Hasbro cartoons (excluding Mini-Spies and Decoys), to just really inspiring me as a kid. I loved playing with them and I loved having 2 toys in one. I even used to count them as 2 separate Transformers in my figure count when I was a kid. My mom wouldn't let me spend my Christmas and birthday money on Fortress Maximus, but she let me buy all 6 of the wave 1 Autobot and Decepticon Pretenders. While I was disappointed with not getting Fort Max, I loved playing with my Pretenders as a kid. Imagine my joy 7 years later in 1995 when I discovered Masterforce thanks to a bootleg VHS dealer at a comic convention!

Ya that could work really well. It could be done kind of like the R.I.D(2015) Battle Pack large figures, but with real armor this time not like the "armor" they came with.
And that is a very sad, but sweet story (wipes away tear from eye)

To be perfectly fair, matryushka doll-like figures like our Pretenders can be hard to deal with on a marketing level, as with everything said and done, you'd effectively be buying two figures for the price of one as you stated. However, Engineering is a different thing, and one that should not be taken lightly as depending on how the "storing" is done, the "Shell" can be either sturdy, or very fragile.
The G1 Pretenders had the inner robots fold up, and stored in a central cavity with arms. That can be extended to arms + legs with modern technology. That works beautifully with full joints from the get go.
Now, having the "shell" limbs integrated with the robot limbs, that's asking for trouble. Bandai's Gordian used that principle and as a result, in addition to using metallic blue plastic that suffers from "Popy Disease" (precursor to our GPS), is fragile, due in part to having hollow limbs with (thin) joints on the outside. I haven't heard of any problems with it's successor Soul of Chogokin GX-39 Baikanfu, with a similar system however, but that's a high end collectible with better materials.
In short, Pretenders can be redone, all it takes is something to make the idea appealing, and the right designs to make them last.

These come across as roughly human sized compared with the other robot figures, and have a lot of playability being targetmasters and 'matrices". Great to get some of the monster characters without them seeming awkward being giant humanoid shells. These just have a good feel at the small size.
But better than that, I think the play pattern could have more uses... that it could be implemented in future lineups as the monster shells for Dinoking and Monstructor small robots?? I'd buy some dinosaurs and monsters with tiny robots inside.
Here's hoping.
Posted by Evil Eye on April 11th, 2018 @ 12:15pm CDT
I can see three ways of doing them:
1: Modular, snap-on armour pieces as opposed to a full "shell", like Beast Hunters did with Shockwave and Smokescreen...except hopefully better.
2: Make them regular Transformers but with influences from the shells in both modes (see ROTF Bludgeon, 2010 Skullgrin etc).
3: As above but homage the gimmick by making them TR compatible. A tiny robot controlling a bigger, more powerful body makes sense after all. Alternatively, make them non-transforming action figures (like a Marvel Legend) that instead of a regular head has a TR-style headmaster, or alternatively a Titan/Prime Master style figure that sits in a little cockpit in the chest.

I would love to see the return of pretenders, especially now that we have better engineering at our disposal. That's why I love these prime masters (and hope we can complete the set of 12 since we all know they'll never make a prime master for the thirteenth, considering his identity; -)) They are just so fun to mess around with
