Up first, we have an image of the sample packaging for the figure. The packaging is new and is not based on either his original toy packaging or prior Encore packaging. The packaging has an image of Big Convoy wielding his BFG in full wonderful new artwork glory.
And finally, in conjunction with the new packaging images, we have a new interview with the Takara Tomy design team behind the figure. The interview, in Japanese, can be found HERE, and we will highlight some of the main talking points below. Of note is the interview includes some images of the prototype and the collapsible Matrix.
Check it all out below, and let us know what you think in the comments section below!
-The Matrix Buster can work with any version of the Big Convoy mold
-The Matrix itself is newly molded to collapse and fit into the Buster, just like the cartoon
-Takara was trying to have this accessory package ready for the original Encore release, but they didn't make it in time
-Takara tried their hardest to align the toys molding with what was in the cartoon
-The Matrix Buster package wasn't given to the Anime release because it would have been possibly too costly to market, so the Anime colors were prioritized
-Big Blue Convoy was released to help offset the cost of updating the molding as well
-The popularity of Big Blue and Anime Convoy helped the team raise the funds to release this new Matrix Buster version
-The Matrix Buster was originally intended to be released in 1999 during the cartoon, during which Big Convoy would have had the Matrix Buster attached to his "prosthetic" left arm (in the cartoon). With the scrapping of the Unicron toy, the cartoon was altered and the Matrix Buster never made it out

Sabrblade wrote:It also says that the anime-colored Encore was released to align with the Beast Wars Masterpieces, which to me makes it sound like a substitute for an actual MP Big Convoy, as though it was released because of there being no plans for a MP Big Convoy.
That's a bummer, though if they had wanted to, they could have held off on the Anime one to coincide with the Lio Convoy

Having further asked about this elsewhere, it seems that they wanted to get the anime-colored one out this year in time for the Beast Wars Neo 20th anniversary, and that its release was done in lieu of an actual MP because A) any plans for an actual MP would have taken too long for it to see release in time for the anniversary year, and B) the original toy was basically already close enough to matching the animation model almost perfectly in sculpt and detail (it just needed the cartoon colors to be completely spot on).D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Sabrblade wrote:It also says that the anime-colored Encore was released to align with the Beast Wars Masterpieces, which to me makes it sound like a substitute for an actual MP Big Convoy, as though it was released because of there being no plans for a MP Big Convoy.

It's also fortunate that both the MP versions of Primal and Lio Convoy are scaled to be of equal height to the original Big Convoy mold in robot mode.

For the former, the Matrix Buster encloses his arm. For the latter, yes, the Big Cannon is still included separately (even if they were the same weapon in the show), since it forms vital parts of the beast mode.SpikeyTigertron wrote:Just occurred to me.... does his arm swap out for the cannon? Also; he presumably comes with his regular BFG?

Following the release of the anime colored Big Convoy last year, another Big Convoy was revealed, this time with brand new accessories. This Matrix Buster Big Convoy is colored like his original toy, but includes some new new tooling and accessories, primary among them his new giant Matrix Buster cannon. This cannon was used by Big Convoy in Beast Wars Neo to destroy Unicron (possessing Beast Wars II Galvatron's corpse), and was powered by his own Energon Matrix. To go with his new cannon, Big Convoy himself also features a new Matrix that can fold up and be inserted into the cannon, and he also includes some new pieces for his Mammoth feet as a show of his powered up cannon abilities. Finally, he includes a NAVI accessory.

It turns out that, when the Blentrons stole all of the Angolmois Energy that the Big Convoy Unit and Magmatron Unit has each collected, they put it all into some kind of pod that coalesced the energy together to revive Unicron in a new "energy body" that he chose to appear in the look of Galvatron to at first trick both teams into thinking that the Blentrons were working for and trying to resurrect Galvatron instead of him, before revealing his true identity to them moments later. He then simply chose to keep Galvatron's appearance as the default look of his energy body for the rest of the series.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Oh, that's a longstanding misconception that turned out to not be the case.D-Maximal_Primal wrote:Unicron (possessing Beast Wars II Galvatron's corpse)

Galvatron's corpse being involved was a fan belief born out of what things merely looked like onscreen without the additional context provided by the dialogue spoken by the characters, since Western fans had had no access to accurate translations of said dialogue for about two decades.
A similar case is the misconception that the Blentrons themselves were beings made out of Angolmois Energy, and that Unicron absorbed them to fully complete his resurrection. What was actually the case was that the Blentrons were never indicated to be made of Angolmois Energy or given any kind of origin at all in the cartoon, and that Unicron absorbed them simply to repower himself after he had been exhausted by a fight with the Big Convoy Unit. And the three were willing to be absorbed, even, content with their fate, knowing that their energy would heal their wounded master.

Well, wow, that's nuts. But thank you for clearing that up!
As for the toy, i am excited for him. I love the mold, and look forward to giving my Anime Big Convoy the cannon, and this guy will remain a regular Big Convoy.
