Yes and no. I liked the individual robots more than I thought I would and the odd upper leg/lower torso areas didn't bother me quite as much once I had them in hand. Prior to owning them, I thought the pay off with these would be the combined modes which I found to be very disappointing. They stay together fairly well, but the limited poseability and frustrating combined mode transformations with Japanese instructions made the combined modes not enjoyable to me. The inability to turn the heads of the combined mode also was a big disappointment (though I knew this going in).
While I didn't put batteries in my figures, I was very impressed by the electronics of these guys from the YouTube videos that I watched. Very elaborate. Almost too much so for what these figures were.
They're some of my least favorite figures from the Transformers line. I would love to know more about the origins of these toys. As we've discussed on the Seibertron.com podcast, it seems like these figures were intended for another transforming toy line such as Brave. It is very obvious that a designer spent a crazy amount of time working on these but unfortunately they just didn't turn out that great in the end.
Ultimately, I'm just bummed that this is the best that they can come up with for Combiners. I don't understand why Combiners are such a difficult concept for Hasbro and Takara these days. Pretty much everything 1992 and on has been a disappointment for combiners.

I feel it should be pointed out that that's not what the instructions show. They show all 3 using the combined weapon. I added Kenzan's swords to the combined weapon just because I thought it looked cool.

Interesting. Guess the show makers decided to do their own thing.Seibertron wrote:Sabrblade wrote:I feel it should be pointed out that, in the show at least, the combined weapon made by Kenzan's swords, Jinbu's longsword, and Ganoh's spear is only used by GoGanoh. Now I wonder why they chose GoGanoh to be the lucky one of the three who got the special weapon.

Maybe because Ganoh and GoGanoh are, in my opinion, the best of all of these figures.
Ganoh has the most traditional looking robot mode with the upper legs, kind of reminds me of a Bulkhead type figure. GoGanoh is also probably one of the best of the combiners as well.

Go Ganouh is the best of the 3 for look, except the spindly legs. For a really awesome combiner you need Ganoh as the top and the legs
How was GoGanoh for posing leg wise? The articulation is there, but I can't get him to stand at all...the joints in Jinbu are just so loose on mine he falls over due to the legs just turning and sprawling all over the place Also, non of my combined modes can hold the weight of the shield because the arm joints are loose.
Also, the instructions show kenzan's weapons as part of the combined weapon. Although it feels quite clumsy. Honestly I wish Kenzan's swords were a lot bigger, too.

The galleries seem to do them more justice than every other time I've seen them. Their combined modes still look disproportional.
Posted by Emerje on March 5th, 2014 @ 11:14pm CST
If I were to rank them It's probably be:
1) Ganoh
2) Optimus Exprime
3) Hishoumaru
4) Gekisoumaru
5) Kenzan
6) Jinbu
7) Sensuimaru
All of the Predacons are awesome, though.

If you think that's bad, you should see our staff emails. The puns are endless. For example, when we were doing our Toy Fair coverage... "Toy Far CoverAge (of Extinction)".

But I'm going to start dragon this thread back on track, though, no more derailings.

OK OK, seriously though this set looks garbagio. You can't just slap an Optimus head on any robot body and call it OP... or can you? They should retool this and make it a Power Ranger set. The colors and combine form look all matches PR criterion already.
Posted by Sabrblade on March 16th, 2014 @ 4:19pm CDT
Except for the legal issues that would prevent that from happening. Namely that this is a TakaraTomy creation and Power Rangers is owned by Bandai, a completely diffferent and rival company. Someone would likely sue the other if they tried to do that.Siger wrote:Va'al wrote:Mindmaster wrote:Siger wrote:Manterax Prime wrote:Any more puns and you can consider yourself Sharkticon food.

I just wanted to say that. Not throwing shade on this set, I want to like it but I just don't at this time. Nice concept though.

That doesn't surprise me as I really like that mold for Optimus as well.
The Bludgeon would be OK if they had done a remold of the gun as well.
With that big arm, the mold still screams "Shockwave" to me. A more traditional arm with a fold away barrel would have been better IMO.
The Megatron is a weak mold, at least for alt mode, and those dorky colors don't help. Not a fan.
Posted by T-Macksimus on March 18th, 2014 @ 7:45pm CDT
As for Megatron... well, you can take one look at that color and conclude for yourself just what I think THAT version resembles.
Two out of three. Not too bad Hasbro. In fact, pretty darn good considering how much I generally dislike the Prime BH line.

It's not the first time this mold has been reused, either. The first time was another Takara Tomy exclusive, Leo Prime, from the Arms Micron line. (Takara Tomy's main line for Prime, featuring slight remolds based on PRID.)
His Micron partner is a reuse, too. Micron Go is a shark based Micron which originally debuted with Arms Micron Dreadwing. A Micron by the name of Jigu. (You can see both galleries for Dreadwing and Jigu here and here.)

Speaking of which, first up is Huffer. He's based on the Beast Hunters Cyberverse Commander Class figure of Trailcutter, and both redecoed remolds feature a new head, remolded shoulders (to include cannons), plus various blades on their bodies to differentiate from the original mold, PRID Commander Class Ironhide. Decoed up in G1 Huffer orange and blue, he's an homage to the original figure but has become quite the battle ready tough guy, which is where he differs from the G1 original, greatly.
And last, but not least, we end this spotlight on our galleries with Beast Blade Optimus Prime. This figure is a redeco of the original Beast Hunters Commander Class Optimus Prime who is also the basis for the newly released Voyager Class "simplified" Optimus. (Which we reported on here, and have a gallery of, here.)
This Optimus is redecoed in the same color scheme as the Weaponizers repaint Beast Tracker Optimus (which can be seen here.) and comes with the battlewing shield.

They look too similar to the originals then, so they may actually be worse off with less knowledgeable customers.
And I'm slowly falling in love with the Beast retoolings, thanks to Go! Ratchet (redubbed Flatline) and BH Dreadwing. I'm looking at Arcee and Starscream now...

I was going to say Soundwave looks good now that he doesn't look like a macaw, but now I'm disappointed they didn't go full Cobra Commander on him. The screenface would make a perfect metal faceplate.
