I bet if they repaint that grimlock as G1 will sell more and faster... G1 is still all they have.

G1 isn't the only thing that got fans on this site and there are heaps of people who don't like it at all. But it's just that all these 1- 2- 3 step magic toys aren't exactly thrilling stuff. Sure we had simple toys back when, but at least those where new characters. These days there must not only be an Optimus for each line, but also for each gimmick. It just dulls everything down to a game of Optimus, Bumblebee and a handfull of characters who happen to be the main cast. It's hard to see myself getting nostalgic over the 2015 RID lineup in 10 years.

for me, it's not about them being G1 characters or not. it's that they're just not very good toys.. they're unfathomably cheap, they're too simple.. and not only that, but their simplicity isn't even fluid, it's annoying.
G1 toys felt like they had some gravitas. they just seemed special when i was a kid. they had metal, they looked like real cars, they were fairly well detailed, and they were fun. these don't strike me as any of that.
these one step changers for instance just seem like a toy that i would've enjoyed for a day or two changing it back and forth, then i probably would've lost it or moved on to the next toy.
as a kid i LOVED puzzles and i LOVED transformers because they were 3D puzzles.. each one was a different character that i could watch on tv. these new figures aren't puzzles, they'v been dumbed down to the point that it loses that special thing that made them so interesting to me.
lastly, on an unrelated note.. my favorite more recent cartoon was most definitely the star wars clone wars series.. i loved that show and i loved the toys as well. some of them were missing some joints, but a lot of them had decent articulation, accessories, and gorgeous sculpts. and hell, the show lasted for 5 seasons, 6 if you could the season on DVD. i wish transformers had something like that. it was both a little serious and a little kid friendly. there were tons of characters which lead to a ton of really cool toys. they didn't just focus on one group of good guys throughout the entire series. they made the universe feel large, and you got to know every character that they focused on a little better. it was really great. the stories were cool, it looked wonderful, and it lasted longer than any transformers show that i can recall from recent memory so it had to do something right.
anyways... i just wish these toys were more special.

The front grill looks like a stylized Mustang- is it just me?

Well, not to pay any licensing, hasbro usually combines cues from a few cars together to simultaneously make it look familiar while copying an exact make. One of my favourite examples was Prime Cliffjumper who was like a combination of the Plymouth Barracuda and a 1970's Dodge Challenger.

Drift takes after his appearance in last year's blockbuster Age of Extinction, taking on the form of an orange futuristic sports car that converts into the most honorable of robo-samurais, giving Bludgeon a run for his money! Of note, the Drift featured in these galleries has a small touch-up on his face, his whiskers being Sharpie'd black for a more accurate look.
Optimus Prime transforms not only into a truck (as always), but pulls a Motormaster and transforms into the truck and trailer! His weapon of choice in his robot mode is his mighty axe which seems to be an homage to his War for Cybertron incarnation.

Yah, I don't think that's fair since ankle tilts are a relatively newer feature to mainline Transformers toys. It's also a feature that I don't think makes or breaks a toy. It is a nice feature, sure, but hardly necessary on a regular retail figure.
Drift is a great figure. He shares some similar transformations with Bumblebee.
Optimus looks good but there's something off with his arms. They're a little too short and the lack of a shoulder ball joint or something to give it proper rotation kind of is a bother. It could also use some paint apps. Maybe a little yellow for detailing on the legs? The overall sculpt is great though.
I look forward to a Voyager Class version of Optimus Prime. Hopefully we get one of him and Grimlock, though I'm a little concerned that we aren't getting Voyagers in this line ... but hopefully that will be resolved in 5 days at Toy Fair.

BTW could you, or somebody else, post a comparison of RID15 Prime with Generations Arcee? I just want a height check before I buy the guy.

He does have a dog snout in the artwork. It's just that that particular angle of the artwork gives a bad impression of his snout. Compare to other shots of him from the show:Rated X wrote:I still dont get why Steeljaw has a regular jaw in the artwork but all the toys have a dog snout ?
It also doesn't help that all of Steeljaw's toys are lacking in paint apps on his face. Compare the face of the official Hasbro deco (left) to the face of this fan custom (right):

As for Fixit, I may just buy him. He's the only character I like after seeing the first 3 eps the weekend, and he works as a 1 step. He reminds me of the human friendly sidekick robots from 80's shows Like Goshogun or that little egg like dude from M.A.S.K (forget his name) I'm not saying characters like that are necessary but he is a little nostalgic. He may look good with the Masterpiece human figures. Or maybe Human alliance figures are a better size.

I'm agreeing with you on this. The first time I saw Steeljaw in the cartoon, the wolf-motif to me felt more like Native American wolf-skin helmet. At worst, the Wolf-snout on him is more a nose guard; the face itself is relatively flat and the wolf's "snout" is nose, not actual mouth. where as the the toy has the wolf snout pointed out and part of the robot mode mouth more pronoucedly than does the cartoon.

Well, it officially aired on CN over here this weekend, so to support that I'm going to watch it on TV rather than online. This weekend will be eps 4 and 5. Hopefully it won't do what Prime did and take too long to continue future seasons. I watched half of season 1 of Prime on CN, but got tired of waiting for the second half whilst the entire internet spoiled Unicron...so I watched the rest first online.
Not sure if I can really take to this show or the toys. I keep looking at Warrior Strongarm...but that price when I know CW is on the shelf isn't appealing. I'm considering warrior Prime, since I like collecting leaders at deluxe size, but again price versus product doesn't seem to balance with this RID stuff. £16.99 for that Prime doesn't feel anywhere near worth it. If they were £9.99 then maybe. But when the legion is £7 I think they've lost me on this one.
Without wanting to start a negatively toned debate, I don't feel they are working to their cause with Strongarm's character. They are pushing for positive Female types in Transformers, but I'm still seeing the tired archetypes; Prime Arcee had to prove she was as good as the males by being tough as nails and hardcore, and now Strongarm is the slightly dizzy over eager fan girl for the famous Bumblebee. Her design is good, very good. Her toy is probably my favourite of the line and the only warrior I'm serious about considering but...meh, I dunno. She isn't what I was hoping for character wise I guess. She could've been interesting, something different, y'know?

All I will say about Strongarm without spoiling later episodes is that we see more sides of Strongarm in episodes after the third one.hinomars19 wrote:Sabrblade wrote:Keep going. And another thing I don't get? I actually prefer Hasbro's plain decos, the painted details and "lights" kinda drive me batty, tbh.

There's such a thing as being "over" detailed. That may be what's getting you. And to your first question, I would bet that the guy designing the figure doesn't know what the Paint department is gonna do, so he gives them everything and hopes for the best. Or, he just likes his job.

The first new addition is Three-Step Changer - or Hyperchange Hero - Steeljaw, self-appointed leader of the Decepticon pack of fugitives, and the latest iteration of the character across different classes. You can find the Warrior class gallery here, the One-Step changer here, Legion class over here and the Tiny Titan here. Click on any image below to view the full gallery, as usual!
