Michael Bay has updated his blog with more info regarding this fall's release of the Transformers Movie
in IMAX theatres. The IMAX version will feature at least 2 minutes of new footage (there are conflicting reports about how much new footage will actually be seen), but Bay has now let us know that this bonus footage will ONLY appear on the IMAX print, and will not be on the DVD, to be released on October 16, and that no extended-edition is planned.

See his full post over at his blog by clicking here.

Michael Bay :
IMAX and the DVD

I saw the IMAX print and it is awesome! It is the future of cinema to see movies in this format. I'm going to see Tranformers one last time and get ready to gear up for Transformers 2. I added two minutes of stuff for IMAX that will never make into any DVD's. There will never be an extended edition.

About the DVD. I like the two disc set. I has all the extras that the others don't have. It is the definitive edition of Transformers. It really breaks down how we made the movie.

Anyway hope you like the IMAX print!

I think "about to be released" is a little generous. We'll be lucky to see the movie before 2010.

How do I know they'll change their minds right after we've all bought the regular DVD?

that's funny i seem to recall george lucas saying the same thing about the origanal dvd releases of the star wars trilogy and he released it, i wouldn't be suprised if he releases the extended edition, maybe when tf2 get ready to come out if a few years but i wouldn't give up just yet. this is just my opinion and i don't know if it will actually happen so don't put all your stoke if my words.

2 thoughts:

1) Do we have concrete info on what these extra scenes will include? If they don't add anything to the movie, I'm not really interested anyway.

2) I don't believe for a second that we won't get these extras on the DVD. Unless of course we need to take him more literally, i.e., they will only show up on the Blu-ray version, not the DVD version

Yeah, I'm sure the extra two minutes will just be 10 extra seconds of 12 scenes with the humans.

Keep your expectations low people...

oh and xxaMaxx, I love your Robot Heroes customs!

Prime Evil wrote:"He" as in M.B. is just a director. Sometimes they have no say in what/how DVD's get released. That's all up to the studio execs and higher ups. C'mon, he wanted this movie to be released in all formats and that didn't happen.

Let's cut him some slack already.

I agree, Bay isn't at fault for eveything.

As far as no IMAX footage on the dvd, oh well. I set out to buy the 2disc set in mind anyway, and that'll be good enough for me.

Yay! Newsified again!

All I'm asking for the sequel is a little more TLC in the process of making it. Don't rush, don't push, just let the ink flow on the paper, and put it on film to the best of your abilities.

Argh...

NOOOOh well. I'm sure that somewhere down the line, we'll get an extended edition, even if the scenes aren't included in the actual movie, which is how I prefer them. I'd really just like to see more Robo-fighting/character developing. Always makes for a good time.

Y'know, people often mention that the script was rushed. It seems to me like they were working on it for quite some time. My guess would be that the writers aren't to blame for any of the movie's shortcomings. By the way, I love the movie despite its shortcomings.

And thanks for checking our the Robot Heroes, Skowl. Glad you like 'em.

A version of the extra 2 minutes will come out sometime (they always do). Just not right now.

Anyway, I don't see how 2 extra minutes is such a big deal anyway. I mean, it's not like a new battle scene got added or anything. The draw of the IMAX version is, well, IMAX!

I'm happy we're getting the movie so early when you concider everything that opened before it (ie Pirates 3) is coming out in time for Xmas.

Still shame though but I'd wonder that if we don't see TF2 by 2009, then maybe they'll give us an extended cut considering they'll have more render time. 48 hours per frame still boggles the senses when thats one frame out of 30 fps to 60 fps to make one second of film. that it'd take up to another year for more of the bots in the film.
lets wait and see what the future holds!

Well, we'll see the footage on youtube anyway, in about 4 days time. I can't travel to the nearest IMAX this weekend, but despite the Halifax IMAX not being listed as showing this movie, I checked it out at Empire Theatres website: Transformers is "Coming Soon to Empire IMAX Theatre, Bayers Lake on September 21st."

Who ever decided this can kiss my ass. They are gonna do the same thin Lucas did with Star Wars. Make 5 versions of each film. Each version will have 1 new scene or extra in it. So is there still gonna be Deleted scenes in the DVD?

This is exactly why pirates have every right to copy movies. The public gets screwed all the time with 2 or 3 editions of the same damned movie.

The footage being IMAX exclusive gives me an idea of what it'll be of.

Sam and the others will use the awesome picture quality and atmosphere that only an IMAX theater can provide in order to thwart Sector Seven and the Decepticons once again.

I give it a 2 weeks before this is repealed.

The score, him on TF2, 2 mins of IMAX footage upped to 5...

Everything said about this movie has been repealed, so why not this too?

Lucas bankrolled his films, all but SW. But I believe he owns the rights to that too. Bottom line, 20th Century distributes, Lucas owns and calls the shots. Bay's just the director and has no say, Hasbro and Paramount do. However, I just don't see the last market for multiple releases of Transformers so if they're going to release this material, it better be sooner than later.

I'm not going to worry about this too much until I know what exaclty this 2 or 5 minutes of footage is. Maybe they found 5 minutes of footage where they didn't shake the camera like crazy.

Truth be told, this is not Bay's decision, nor would he have any say in the matter.

Dreamworks are doing the right thing to make more $$$, release the "Special Edition" version alongside the plain-old version now, let everyone snap it up for Christmas.

Then release an upgraded edition in the next few years, sometime near the release of TF2. Transformers 1.5 or something.

Right....Then he'll be glad tell us that there'll be a 10-minute extended footage when the 2-disc collector's extended blu-ray version comes 2 years after we'd all bought the Oct-16 version and a few trips to IMAX.

This is about as craptastic as the botcon seekers release. Sure it's a great incintive for people that are fortunate enough to have an IMAX nearby or have the capabilities to go to one, but sucks for everybody that just buys their TF movie at the local store.

If there are going to be deleted scenes on the DVD, they might be the same as the bonus IMAX footage.

Though I really do want to see the IMAX version just for the ginormous screen.

Him referring to the DVD as the definitive copy of Transformers after having just said the IMAX scenes won't be included in it is hardly about to dissuade people from that belief. Talk about a complete contradiction.

I like his movies generally, but what with his recent bluray/hddvd comments, maybe he should just quit with updating his website and just direct.

Stop putting your foot in it Mike, and just stick with what you're good at.

The DVD may very well be the "definitive" copy because it was the general release version. Most extended versions dont get better with the new scenes in place.

Also Bay may not be the final say on the DVD but he may be passing on info straight from Dreamworks/ Paramount.

I have a hard time trusting Michale Bay's decisions, especially when it comes to marketting. His blatant product placement and the nonsense about blu-ray v. HD has seriously tainted my already bleak image of him. I'd say that MY definitive version of the movie would have a feature that would stop the camera from shaking. Another cool feature would be having Frank Welker dubbed over Hugo Weaving and Cullen over Ironhide. While we're at it I think it would be cool to completely redub the 'bots and 'cons and even add dialogue into some of the fight scenes. There are plenty of oppurtunities considering you can't see what's going on anyways so you wouldn't notice a character's 'mouth' not moving. I'm going to completely ignore Bay's nonsense about there never being any extended version. It's just a ploy to sell as many copies of each version as possible. It's not his fault, unfortunately. That's just the type of society we live in. The fact that people will buy into it is what feeds the monster.
