here's what the front cover art of the booklet looks like. This is the original Japanese version, not the adapted version. The main difference with the adapted one is that "Cybertron Commander Starsaber" is replaced with "Autobot Enforcer Star Sabre." And naturally the Japanese text down the bottom is translated to English.

Dont know if you read above, but the translation is handled by Hasbro.

Well, maybe wrong target, but I agree 100% with the sentiment

Though it is the logical, perhaps inevitable counterpart to downgrading great Decepticon Leaders to mad scientists. Preventing unstoppably-badass-leader-oversaturation is the minor downside to IDW G1 being awesome enough to include so very much and last so very long.Desslok2201 wrote:william-james88 wrote:Super Megatron wrote:"Autobot Enforcer"!?!?

If that's how you see it, great. I see it as a gross misuse of established and storied characters, stripping them down to something which is at best a parody of itself and at worst the removal of all interesting characteristics. Instead of destroying characters, how about making new ones? Expand the brand instead of destroying it's history. Furman made Xaaron, IDW made Rung, it can be done. Any character could have been created to become the 3rd rate religious zealot that Star Saber was turned into. The greatest swordsman in the universe with an adopted human child was not an Optimus Prime 'clone' as it was put, he was a real character, and a very interesting one. But I guess cannibalism is 'awesome'

Woah woah, what does Optimus have to do with Lone Wolf and Cub?

Sorry, I totally forgot about Lone Wolf and Cub. Dammit.

Now, I'm not saying "go with the IDW version", but to say there's some great characterization for G1 Star Saber would require me to be fluent in Japanese...which I am not. He was just "leader guy with a sword" to me.
This is partly why I'm not getting him. If I were to pick this one up, it would be strictly in appreciation for the engineering that went into the toy...there is virtually no character for me to be "in touch with". At least with IDW's version, there is a character, even if I don't like the character. It's not enough for me to plunk down damn near 200 for him in any event.
On the other hand, if they made Masterpiece Overlord, I'd get him because of the IDW interpretation.

He's just a head taller than Ultra Magnus, so about the size of MP-1/MP-2/MP-4, Combiner Wars Superion, Armada Tidal Wave, etc.SkyWarpt wrote:Okay, I'm sold. I know how old they are, I linked to the article myself. Despite popular belief, I do possess basic reading skills.
This is really not news, just reiteration to fuel (justified) hype for the figure.

Star Saber is not on my list, but damn if it isn't a spectacular toy! I've considered buying it a few times, but I have to stay true to collecting (and wallet) objectives. If not for that, this would be a buy just 'cause. I have no problem believing Takara will do well with it.

I kinda wants the boxart to be the photo of the MP figure emulating the G1 boxart pose and have Saber, the V-Star, Yuuki no Brain and the SaberBlade laid out exactly like the original G1 package, in polystyrene, but that's me asking too much

Estimated arrival dates are "March 2015". That's like, next week. Seems like the other masterpieces have all come out on the same parts of the month, so do we have a guesstimate on when SS should be hitting so I can make sure the $$$'s in the right place?

HLJ says on or about 3/15 but I remember something about it being pushed back a week until 3/22. So probably sometime in the second half of March would be my guess*.
*Totally not responsible if it comes out in the first half of March

Okay. I was afraid it'd be like March 7th, right on top of bills or something. *Whew.* And really, with the disaster that is the Western Seaports right now, a delay would be unwelcome but not unsurprising

Super Sentai, the source material for Power Rangers, goes all the way back to 1975, or rather 1979 when the mechs were introduced.

i dunno, star saber has a large physical sword like most super sentai mecha, but his looks feel more like one of the transforming gundams, with the mouthplate, antenna and the bell-bottom legs. no to mention the use of red, blue and white with yellow accents.

I don't really see either right off, He's too clunky for what I think of as being a Gundam, there have been plenty of blocky Gundam mechs, but the quintessential Gundum robots to me are far more humanoid in appearence, lithe in the limbs, and armor fairly obviously being added onto a frame. I can sorta see hints and elements in the combined form's mask or Saber's wing shield, though. and when I think Megazord, I think something more along the lines of the Gestalts but again, blockier and more solid vehicle kibble. Bt then, my only experience with Megazords have been the train from the 90s (That I actually never owned myself) and the Solar Zord (?) train a decade later which as compartments in its arms and legs that are conviently minicon sized.

Engineering-wise, I'm impressed by how they managed to make the head turn with the Brainmaster feature AND a large head put over the small head while the large head is on an articulated arm.

How's about we try this kind of comparison? Star Saber's design is to Gundam what Gridman's design was to Ultraman.Flashwave wrote:wilcosu35 wrote:JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:SkyWarpt wrote:JelZe GoldRabbit wrote:Ironhidensh wrote:Kinda feels more like a power ranger megazord than a transformer to me.

Take away the attatchment to character (because I'm in no way attached to Star Saber) this may be the coolest MP in the line.

I am a completist, and I have all of the Takara MP's, including funky GOLD megatron, but I am not familiar with Star Saber, I dont have that special bond with it that comes directly from the cartoon and my childhood. Nevertheless, Its coming to be part of my collection, and I am sure it will be very special, but somehow, it just does not feel like an MP figure. It doesnt look like the transformation is very complex, it does not so much transform then just come together with other pieces to make a bigger robot to make a bigger robot. Maybe thats what feels weird to me... I am sure the feel and quality of it, as well as its cartoon and character accuracy makes it and qualifies it as an MP and so it is.
I kinda felt the same when the diecast content of the figures went out the window, prior to MP 10, I felt that a master piece figure ought to have a ton of diecast and weigh, well, a ton. But I got used to the change, and can see why that was necessary as well as having a good size scale, etc. Lets hope that this figure marks another great evolution for the masterpiece series.
