See a brief summary of this new comic series, as well as two covers (one paying homage to the classic Marvel Transformers #5), on the IDW Solicitations page by clicking here.
The official continuation of the blockbuster TRANSFORMERS movie begins here! When MEGATRON falls in battle, STARSCREAM assumes the role of DECEPTICON leader on Earth. Mustering his surviving allies, he sets out to put his own plan in motion. But before he can do that, he’ll need to retrieve a fallen comrade, carry out a plan of revenge, and leave the Earth to meet up with a major player in the DECEPTICON army. Picking up where the film ended, “The Reign of Starscream” also reveals the fates of other surviving film characters, as co-writers Chris Ryall (Transformers Movie Prequel) and Chris Mowry present a tale of intrigue, betrayal, and dark ambition featuring both old and all-new TRANSFORMERS characters. Featuring art from fan-favorite illustrator Alex Milne (Transformers Movie Adaptation) and covers by Milne and Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key). Ask your retailer how to get a variant cover by James Raiz, too!
Also available in April 2008 are
Best of the UK: Dinobots issue #6
Best of the UK: Space Pirates issue #2

So it sounds like basically any story as to how they all got back together (including Barricade being found etc) is gonna be skipped over in the movie who will go right back into Screamer arriving with his new Army.
At least its kinda giving some idea of how the movie will run. If Screamer is in charge then that pretty much ends any speculation about an immediate Megs return (unless he only reigns in the comic) however it does lead to a nice 'Rise of Galvatron' moment and perhaps an homage to the original movie as screamer gets vapourised.
Of course this then will spiral out of control and people will start beleiving Unicron will show up, otherwise how would Megs be reborn etc....
...ok rant over.

It's an official continuation, which means the designs they use would probably reflect the real thing, and any new characters unveiled may very well be characters we could see in the sequel! So...
and leave the Earth to meet up with a major player in the DECEPTICON army
Our first look at Shockwave? Soundwave?
featuring both old and all-new TRANSFORMERS characters
Could this actually be our first look at new characters who may actually show up in the sequel?

Thing is, though, is will TF2 wipe this story out?

I wouldn't get too excited about that possibility. Generally the studios don't pay that much attention to how comic book or cartoon people adapt their films or TV series; like Lucasfilm, they have people delegated to do that, because George Lucas is highly unlikely to sit down and read EVERY SINGLE SW comic or novel himself to give it his stamp of approval. Same for Star Trek - I don't think J.J. Abrams went back through every classic-era Trek story that's ever been published himself, and I'm not so sure he would have sat through the old Filmation cartoon. It'd be nice if a TF that appears in this comic DOES show up in the sequel, but I have a funny feeling most of the "New" characters in THIS follow-up to the movie will be ones Hasbro squeezed into either the game or the toy line, and any really new characters I wouldn't feel safe gambling on them actually showing up in TF2.

I haven't played the game, but it's my understanding that Shockwave's in it, so that's a possibility I can see.

More than likely the second movie will greatly contradict anything that happens in this (or any other ) movie related comic. If I hear good things about I'll get the trade.

True, but you're assuming the "comic book" people are the ones who are actually responsable for the character designs. Think back to last year, the first time we saw Movie Jazz's bot mode was from a sketch by Don Figueroa - destined for movie comic books. Which means that the artists were given a look at the designs before we were, and based their comics on those. The prequel comics came out in, what, March/April of 07, before the film was even out. Which would have meant that they would have been working on them the months before, which means they would have been given the designs even before that.
We already know Bay and the team have finalised the movie designs for the bots in the sequel. Nothing is stopping the artists from at least hinting at a few characters by means of the comics - remember, if it hadn't have been for the leaks the first time around, the IDW prequel series would have been our first real look at the movie TFs.

Pyrostrata wrote:Oh gods no! Let's not bring in Unicron or Galvatron! That would ruin everything! Unicron is a dead horse beaten into oblivion.......and Galvatron....yuck!
Have you seen IDW's take on Galvatron yet? Not that i want a galvatron type thing in the movies, but IDW could make it work. In fact the quality of IDW's prequal really made me dissapointed with the movie. But let's not even have any such nonsense as Unicron. The idiots in hollywood might overhear us and come up with a few 'good' ideas...

Sorry about that, but because of the new forum setup, we still can't post news stories from existing threads. Every new story needs a new thread. It's inconvenient, I know, but it's being worked on. I still credit you as a source though.
