We thanks fellow Seibertronian Sabrblade for letting us know of this neat tidit. Evan Brooks, the Hasbro designer who is handling the Omega Prime Haslab figure is responding to multiple fans on social media. The question of redecos came up and fans were wondering if this being a Haslab release meant there wouldn'd be a chance of that. Well the short answer is "no", as Evan says
"It's certainly possible, I think. I think this is new Territory for the Haslab teams as there hasn't been such an outcry for a future Redeco of a figure until now, haha"

He also confirmed that the ladder can extend. Below is a screenshot of said quotes.

Sabrblade wrote:Confirmation from Evan that the ladder can indeed extend, and that the success of this figure could lead to certain redeco possibilities:

Until now, the others TF Haslabs really didn't lend themselves to "practical" Redecos. But I thought part of what made a Haslab special was the idea that it would only be usedfor that purpose, and never again. I mean the molds for Unicron, VS, and DS still exist, they could put our feelers for another run, but of course, probably face backlash for it.

I think certainly there would be room for another run of Unicron. I would probably buy a second one myself. But repaint potential would be limited to what? 2 other color variations based off the Unicron Trilogy?
Victory Saber I think they could do some sort of shattered glass concept while understanding there would be a smaller run and smaller demand than even for VS. Deathsaurus would have a potential repaint as Red Geist which would be a fun way to bring some Brave Universe into the Legacy line. But again that market would likely be very small. like 1/3rd of the run of Deathsaurus

You could have the two UT repaints (Unicron of Light and Energon's Unicron) and a potential Prime color-scheme retool (with the rocky texture added)

Looks like there was a decent-sized bump in the backer count today. Ever since Day 2, the count has been climbing steadily day-by-day, averaging at about 200-300 new backers per day. This morning, it was at just over 6500 but has suddenly increased to over 7200 in only a few hours! That's more than twice the average backer additions per day we've had so far!

That must be the first bump from international orders (It is a Monday Afterall). Still the fact that it got 65% funded in just 6 days, before international orders started coming in is very encouraging. I'm sure it will make the tiers no problem. Man I just wish i had a place for this in my collection.... Its really cool, but I just cant justify it at the moment.

I will take absolutely any repaint they want to do of Omega Prime. I'd even take Titanium Defensor colors, maybe paired with a Magnus in the Diaclone colors of his namesake.

Takara Tomy no longer has the rights to Brave, it's why literally everyone in Japan is making Brave toys right now except for them (mostly Bandai who own the anime). And I'm pretty sure none of those have been based on figures based on Transformers.

Unicron and a bunch of other HasLab figures were supposed to be available for around a month on Pulse late last year. They sold out in less than an hour.

I felt like I was having a stroke trying to read that.

Not sure how making Optimus Prime yellow is woke, and genderbent characters aren't exactly anything new if you've been online in the past few decades. Its just a fun alternate take on the character.

I disagree with the sentiment, but kind of agree with the point. This is a figure with one HEFTY price tag. Is it a great idea to start making repaints? Is there gonna be a lot of demand for that? Won't it start watering down the exclusivity of a Haslab release if you make a bunch of (potentially more desirable) repaints?

Although that black one is really, REALLY, nice not gonna lie.

True. But it is strongly surmised (and I agree). These were holdovers for QC issue replacements, thus why there were so few. This was not an additional run of the toys. Still, people lost their S##t over it.

*I paid 3 times cost for THIS *, If I had known Hasbro was gonna make it available again...blah blah blah...."

Can you imagine what would happen if Hasbro decided to do another run on Unicron? First, it would probably BE closer to $700 in todays prices, but also, it would split the fandom. From those rejoicing at another shot, to those cursing Hasbro with spittle flecked rage.

I can understand the frustration for the same toy being available again, being available long-term, or being available at a cheaper price.

In regards to the potential repaints, I don't get why people would be upset about a redo/repaint having its own limited run for (presumably) the same price or higher. Yes, the mold may be slightly less exclusive, but it's a different variation having its own limited run.

I'm glad Unicron sold out quickly, when it was announced they were selling him again, my brain kicked in with some degree of skipping regret, but as soon as he was gone, the feeling vanished again thankfully

I have no regrets. I mean even if in some crazy universe I was given one for FREE, it would just be sitting in the box taking up space in my closet, or bedroom. I literally have no way to display it.

It's not "woke," it's just dumb.
Because who's supposed to know at first glance?

Regardless, HASLAB redecos and even reissues would defeat the "core premium principle" of HASLAB. Part of the HASLAB flavor is the limited and exclusive factor.

But with Corporate "greed", never say never.

I agree that that would have explained their existence, but not why Hasbro thought they had enough stuff to last a month. Also these weren't sold "as is" which means they'd still have to reserve some figures in case of replacements or parts. And why just Unicron, wouldn't they have had some Star Sabers left, too? No, I think everything points to these being limited production runs since they were also being sold as part of their charity fundraiser.

Agreed. It's pretty uncommon for obscure repaints to be more popular the original figure (just ask the less than 2000 Legends Grand Maximus figures). A limited run of an already limited mold shouldn't be a big deal. And since the molds are already paid for the minimum order quantity to be made can be much smaller (again, Grand Maximus for reference).

May as well show what we could have as potential repaints:

Black Omega Prime

"Omega Shotimus Prime"? "God Splendid Convoy"?

Defensor

Midnight Defensor

I'd buy all of them, but I'd be least excited by Midnight Defensor.

That could work, and give that Midnight Defensor head color scheme to the combined mode, carry on the tradition of a silver Super head and a gold Omega head.

And I mentioned before but I also wouldn't mind seeing an Ultra Magnus done in Delta Magnus colors, I think the mold would look good in darker gray and swapping some of the blue for red.

I guess I'm in the minority because I never thought the yellow version of this guy looked all that good. In Omega mode she looks like a mishmash with Magnus not changed enough to make use of the yellow properly. In regular mode she just looks like a yellow RID Prime ... and they didn't even bother to swap out the red chrome bits for gold. Just so ... lazy. I get that it's powered by rarity and it's one of the only yellow Primes, and it was retconned into a female Prime, but all on its own I don't think it's special. And it coulda been. Yellow is a strong color and this is a strong design.

Defensor looks really great. The new heard helps a lot. But it's also something whos time has passed. It would have been great for the early Classics era, but as a Haslab? Just for the color scheme? This is really expensive and large and Defensor is the least great of the early era Combiners.

The black version, I think, is the best alternate color scheme. It's really hard to go wrong with black and gold. Or black and anything, if I'm being honest.

But maybe I'm just being really picky.

Likely because Hasbro didn't do niche homages like that back in the Unicron Trilogy years, Takara was simply done with using that mold, and it was too big and expensive for Fun Pub to use.

Hrmmm... I wonder if Hasbro has developed a new way to count international backers more efficiently? Past TF Haslabs had them about once per week. But there was already a spike on Monday. But just within the last hour or so there was another, taking this from around 7500, to past 8200!

Just something I've been thinking about. As you all know, I'm a big fan of combination, even if it gets silly or ridiculous sometimes ;) .

I mean in the past I was actually able to take Energon Optimus Prime and Omega Supreme (a standard Combination) and still be able to find places to plug in Wing Saber, and all of Primes 4 smaller vehicles into one BIG monstrosity  . More recently, and a little less abrasive, I was able to take the Gun Tower from Legacy Motormaster, and make it a jet pack/wings for Menasor. No pieces left out.

However for Omega Prime, a good portion of the below components are NOT part of the combined mode, and as I recall, there really was no practical way to do so with the original.
Image

I do like how they integrated Blue Bolts (aka Magnus' weapons) into the combined mode for this new Haslab version. I just wonder if there is some way to combine the rest? Even it it is just more of a backpack?

DS needed 17K to pass the 2nd tier, and it ultimately ended with over 27K (10K more than needed).

Omega Prime needs 16K to get the stands, 10K over that would be 26K. If it gets that many units funded (trying to temper my expectations here)... Do you think it would be out of the realm of possibility to include 3 (of the 6) spy changers at Gen Micromasters scale? I know it would be new tooling for 3 toys, (perhaps some existing Micromaster tooling could be used?) but they did 2 for DS which was less expensive. I mean I think its certainly more reasonable than a deluxe, voyager (or bigger) toy, even if form a pre-existing tool.

Just extrapolating into the future, if the Next Haslab was Devil Gigatron/Rid2001 Galvatron, then it could come with the other 3 spy changers to complete the set.

I sure hope not. The Spychangers were little in the cartoon but they weren't tiny. They were about only a head or so shorter than the Autobot Brothers. I wouldn't want to them to be any smaller than Core class at the tiniest. Ideally, if they could bring back the old Basic/Scout class or make them short Deluxes, that'd be perfect. The old G2 Go-Bot molds they were originally made from did no justice to their in-show size.

Same with how the members of Team Bullet Train were each only Voyager height in their toys but towered over everybody in the show.

Image

Then again, almost every original toy in the Car Robots line was out of scale with their onscreen depictions. The only ones who seemed to fit with their show sizes were all five Predacons, the Autobot Brothers, Skid-Z, and Tow-Line. Everyone else's sizes were out of whack between the toys and the show:
  • Optimus was too tall, which made Ultra Magnus even more too tall. But to be fair, Optimus's basic robot mode was made to scale to the height of the original G1 Laser OP mold that was used to make Scourge, but he too was smaller in the show.
  • All five Decepticon Commandos were much taller in the show than their G1 Combaticon mold toys were. Mega-Octane alone was much taller than both Scourge and Optimus's basic robot mode.
  • The Build Team members were each pretty big dudes, though Wedge wasn't too far from the heights of the Autobot Brothers, but he was smaller than the other three.
  • And Fort Max's Cerebros component was the same height as the Autobot Brothers, meaning the toy of Fort Max himself needed to be at least four times bigger. :P

Hopefully we doe get a secret third tier like Deathsaurus got. Maybe repaint Mirage into Skid-Z? They've used that mold so many time surely it would be cost effective by now. Still feels unlikely though so maybe some mini figures of T-AI and Koji?

I wish we could say that "10,000 in 10 days" means there was an average of 1,000 per day, but it was more like 200-300 per day after the first reached about 4,800, plus a couple of significant bumps on Monday and Wednesday boosting it up. So we'll see if the first tier can be reached three days from now or not.

I really hope this shows Hasbro just how much the fandom loves RiD/CR and we'll start seeing more representation in the main retail lines as well.

I highly doubt Spychangers will be included, they would have been announced as a tier if they were. But doesn't mean they can't be in Legacy United or whatever line comes after.

As for the next HasLab, I really hope Hasbro stays in the same vein and we get the bullet trains. Or if they don't want to, just put them as either the next Titan or sell them separately as leaders or commanders.

I really wonder why they thought that? Even the Takara reissue that was sold for around DOUBLE the original retail price sold like hot cakes. Plus it's a motherfokking Optimus.

The day a Transformers HASLAB fail will be the day :HASBRO: push something no one care about like the Reva Lightsaber. What would be the TF equivalent? ROTF Skids and Mudflap's blaster?

They were just bitter it wasn't Primus. I guarantee Primus wouldn't have sold this well this quickly.

HasLab Unicron failed. The original backer window didn't get it funded. It required an unprecedented extension to get it made, because Hasbro couldn't afford to let Unicron fail. It was a gamble they lost, so they changed the rules to make it win.

Hasbro.has the advantage of owning GIJoe & having a competent partner in TT with Transformers. Since Marvel and Star Wars are Disney licenses, there obviously was some influence there on the last 2 failed Haslabs. Hasbro I think had to push back and finally make them understand it's classic stuff that sells , not modern, this the return to form and the successful results.

Any Haslab,if poorly chosen could fail. Even Transformers. Adventure play accessories would probably be a hard sell. Costumes etc. as long as they keep making actual Transformers that are complimentary to the main line, and aren't too expensive, it should work.

Unicron was unique in that it was only the 2nd Haslab ever, so they were still trying to figure things out. The black series Rancor is still puzzling. It came so close at the very end, even a 1 day extension would have allowed it to fund. It was almost like someone wanted it to fall. The others I get because the backers needed wasn't even close, but that Rancor was just an odd situation all around.

As of this typing, the count is just 11 backers away from 11,000, in less than a day after being funded.

Ah yeah. That did count. But unlike The Rancor, maybe the initial investment was too much.

Given Unicron's history, I really doubt that a 600$ Primus would be funded.

Unicron at least had the advantage to have appeared in the 1986 Movie and Armada (Prime counts a bit too.) Primus is only a Cybertron one-shot. So if the "popular" Unicron had to be cheated into being funded, the less popular Primus could be a sureshot failure that couldn't be cheated.

To be a little fair to Primus, he appeared in robot mode in the Cybertron cartoon for 10 episodes, whereas Unicron only appeared in robot mode in Armada for just 4 episodes. Same with his head only appearing in 4 episodes of the G1 cartoon, but that was only his head and not his full robot body. In Energon, he was in planet mode for most of that series, but his robot mode appearances kinda blurred together since, by that point, the show became so unmemorable. And Prime never depicted him with a full planetary robot mode, just avatars made of dirt and rock.

Counting the few minutes Unicron's robot mode appeared in TFTM, Primus has had more cartoon screentime in his planetary robot mode than Unicron had in both TFTM and Armada combined.
