Hasbro sent us the trailer for the upcoming Netflix Transformers War for Cybertron series.

You can see it below

Please let us know what you think of the voice work, the animation (brought to you by the same people who did RID 15 and Prime). Is this a step up from the Machinima web series? But most of all, what's up with Magnus wearing a cloak?!

Here is the accompanying information:

LOS ANGELES, CA – Feb. 22, 2020 – Netflix and Hasbro, Inc., in partnership with Rooster Teeth, today released the first teaser trailer for Chapter One of the highly anticipated TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON TRILOGY, premiering on Netflix. The Series raises the stakes of the Autobot and Decepticon war with Chapter One having six, twenty-two minute episodes, complete with a new animation look and style that presents the TRANSFORMERS bots like you’ve never seen them before. The TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON TRILOGY plunges us deep into events that live at the heart of this legendary franchise, with SIEGE shining a spotlight on a critical timeframe in TRANSFORMERS history on Cybertron.

TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON TRILOGY: SIEGE begins in the final hours of the devastating civil war between the Autobots and Decepticons. The war that has torn apart their home planet of Cybertron is at a tipping point. Two leaders, Optimus Prime and Megatron, both want to save their world and unify their people, but only on their own terms. In an attempt to end the conflict, Megatron is forced to consider using the Allspark, the source of all life and power on Cybertron, to “reformat” the Autobots, thus “unifying” Cybertron. Outnumbered, outgunned, and under SIEGE, the battle-weary Autobots orchestrate a desperate series of counterstrikes on a mission that, if everything somehow goes right, will end with an unthinkable choice: kill their planet in order to save it.

Rooster Teeth (RWBY, gen:LOCK) is producing the original series for Netflix, and Polygon Pictures (Godzilla, Knights of Sidonia) is serving as the animation studio. TRANSFORMERS veteran F.J. DeSanto (Transformers: Titans Return, Transformers: Power of the Primes) is serving as showrunner on the series with several contributing writers, including George Krstic (Megas XLR), Gavin Hignight (Transformers: Cyberverse), and Brandon Easton (Agent Carter, Transformers: Rescue Bots).

“We’re thrilled to be working with Rooster Teeth, Netflix and Hasbro to bring this fan-oriented MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE story to life,” said Shuzo John Shiota, Polygon Pictures Inc. (PPI) President and CEO. “The TRANSFORMERS universe has so many rich characters and engaging stories. Getting the opportunity to be part of the team bringing the robots in disguise to life in this new trilogy is unbelievable.”

“The TRANSFORMERS brand is a global phenomenon with toys, consumer products, films, television shows, and literature, resonating with millions of passionate fans around the world," said Tom Warner, Senior Vice President for the TRANSFORMERS franchise for Hasbro. “This brand new Netflix series will add to the incredible slate of TRANSFORMERS offerings with a truly unique story that will delight both existing fans and those being introduced to the wonder of robots in disguise.”

"TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON TRILOGY marks the inaugural production for our Rooster Teeth Studios division and we’re proud to be partnering with and entrusted by Hasbro and Netflix," said Matt Hullum, Rooster Teeth co-founder and Chief Content Officer. "As fans of these characters, it's been a joy bringing our storytelling and animation expertise to this project. This teaser trailer is just a taste of what’s to come in this series, and we can’t wait to see what the fans think, especially our Rooster Teeth community!"

The Series voice talent cast includes Jake Foushee (Optimus Prime), Jason Marnocha (Megatron), Linsay Rousseau (Elita-1), Joe Zieja (Bumblebee), Frank Todaro (Starscream), Rafael Goldstein (Ratchet), Keith Silverstein (Jetfire), Todd Haberkorn (Shockwave, Red Alert), Edward Bosco (Ultra Magnus, Soundwave), Bill Rogers (Wheeljack), Sophia Isabella (Arcee), Brook Chalmers (Impactor), Shawn Hawkins (Mirage), Kaiser Johnson (Ironhide), Miles Luna (Teletraan I, Cliffjumper) and Mark Whitten (Sideswipe, Skywarp).

More details regarding Chapter Two, TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON TRILOGY: EARTHRISE and Chapter Three coming soon.

Hopefully there will be some levity in that to counterbalance all the turmoil of warfare.

I can't tell if this looks promising or not. On the one hand, there appears to be potential for some interesting plots (Magnus going under-cover, Jetfire starting with the Decepticons, Optimus having to choose survival over protecting freedom), and character dynamics (Optumus and Elita finally back together, Bee and Wheeljack teaming up) but the lines from the trailer are all pretty generic. This is either to understandably avoid spoiling anything, or indicative of a shallow storyline. I'm looking forward to it regardless, at the very least it will be a chance for some characters to get some spotlight who haven't in a while.

Except Cog! RIPP (Rest in Partsforming Pieces)

I should hope not. This is the War for Cybertron. The lame comic relief humour of certain TF series of old would be horribly out of place, tonally speaking. There shouldn't be any guffaws at this stage in their history.

I am very impressed (as mentioned in the Earthrise thread) that we finally have new voices for Megatron, Prime and Bumblebee. Finally beginning to cut the ties that bind the series in place.

I was really hoping for something new and different. Not just the same old Great War blah blah blah..... maybe something along the lines of MTMTE or even RiD2015.

I knew better, of course, but I was hoping all the same. Yes, this looks pretty decent, and I might even enjoy it, but it isn’t what I wanted.

Ah well, life goes on.

I was trying to be hopeful, but the trailer kinda let me down. I didn't really feel anything during it, it did nothing to make me excited.

Also, that Bee face is fugly, they copied that one comic artist for that look, don't do that! It's bad!

Well, it at least looks better than the Prime Wars trilogy. Who's the voice of Optimus here? It sounds off.

I agree. Great War, Prime going on about Freedom, gotta stop Megatron getting from the AllSpark.

Throw in a limited cast based on who got a figure release in Siege and it makes for a same old story designed to sell toys cartoon.

Yeah it's the guy who voices Prime on Cyberverse. He's ok, but definitely no Peter Cullen. The Animation is definitely better than Prime Wars, but the voice acting went down a couple pegs. Still cautiously optimistic. The story is definitely the right tone that I'd want to see, but still a lot can go wrong between now and June.

One odd thing I noticed though, like Combiner Wars, this show will hit several months after the toys would have been gone from shelves. I guess Hasbro did learn a lesson such that, THIS TIME they are going to just repaint several of the old Siege toys as Walmart Exclusives. Not sure about all of you, but my walmarts still have 35th anniversary figures hanging around, and this will be the 4th/5th use of the Siege Megatron mold...???

Yeah it's the guy who voices Prime on Cyberverse.
It is? Oh, nice. He's definitely gotten better in this season of Cyberverse, enabling Optimus to emote better and have a more diverse emotional range now that he's been put into more non-war situations.

He's not terrible...but I'd rather have Neil Kaplan or Jon Bailey again if we cant have the MAN (Cullen) himself. Also no slight against Gary Chalk, but to me he'll always be Primal rather than Prime,

Also pretty sure Megatorn is the same guy from Machinima's series, which is fine. I'd rather have him than Cyberverse who's odd accent keeps me from taking him seriously.

Cant recognize off the bat any other voices, but there wasn't much dialogue in that preview, which wasn't a bad thing.

The names in the cast I recognize are Jake Foushee (Optimus Prime), Jason Marnocha (Megatron), Frank Todaro (Starscream), Keith Silverstein (Jetfire), and Todd Haberkorn (Shockwave, Red Alert).

Six 22-minute episodes for Season 1 makes sense.

I get that and agree to some extent, but I have to admit, he definitely feels like Prime whenever I see this intro:

I like him as Prime, it's a decent take while being different from Cullen.

Historically, in Transformers in general we know it does. Typically every TF series is at it's best when it acknowledges that war isn't funny. The Movie being the first time G1 lived upto that idea. MTMTE/LL or the Japanaes dub of Beast Wars, being where the very idea was completely bastardised. The fact that this show is going to be on Netflix only lends credence to the idea this won't have to go down that road, just to please TV standards groups.

What would you rather see more focus on? Five Faces of Darkness or B.O.T.? Code of Hero or The Low Road? Animated Season Three or Car Robots? Last Stand of The Wreckers or IDWverse 2.0?

In other words, you don't want this show have any positive emotions or uplifting bright spots at all. No optimism, no hope, no happiness, no charm, no likability, no reassurance, no inspiration, no friendliness, no nothing. Just nothing but misery, depression, anger, hatred, sullenness, sorrow, angst, vengeance, pain, suffering, mourning, death, distress, grief, agony, anxiety, tortture, psychosis, loathing, etc.

Hope you enjoy your sad, depressing show. I'd rather go watch Wonder Woman again, a movie that treats WWI with respect and also serves to inspire hope and the betterment of humanity.

Maturity and levity are not mutually exclusive themes. I must have missed that part in every single war story ever told.

Nor is friendship, optimism or likeability et al absent from a compelling War narrative. To humanise war through fiction, is to explore the good and the bad. Guffaws and fart jokes cheapen whatever merit the narrative might have in the telling of such stories. There to patronise an audience deemed ill-equipped to cope with a more adult narrative.

Yes. Because that is the level of humour series in the past have lowered to. As I said, traditionally TF series humour is aimed as low brow as possible.
Because executives think kids are "too stupid" or "delicate" to grasp the concept of actual conflict. In spite of the existence of such Kids series that represent the opposite of such mentality, from Bucky O' Hare to Roughnecks.

This show is going to be terrible, given the track record of Rooster Teeth and Netflix. There, I said it. It cannot and will not even come close to the heights of Animated and Prime purely because such height simply cannot be achieved again. Not right now. Call me negative but that's what I think. At the risk of sounding like I don't 'get' Transformers: yes its 'a toy show' but Animated and Prime had a massively ambitious creative team behind them which ensured that the show was the main appeal and the toyline a bonus.

This is what TF should strive for. However once again we see a crummy, short online-only production meant to advertise a toyline that's already finished. I can't be the only one having massive Machinima Combiner Wars flashback, right?

While I haven't quite gotten there yet, Season 2 was really good too, that show is doing good (plan to watch season 3 hopefully this week).

As for this, after the trailer did little for me, I am going to try to remain open to it being good. But I will still keep expectations heavily in check

I think a common theme to success here is the lack of Evergreen. I saw plenty of comments to this shows trailer stating variations on "I want the OG voices back" Which is the biggest problem to Transformers. This isn't the original show. Let it go. Everything from Beast Wars to Cyberverse, wherein do they hit their stride? When they leave the shackles of G1 behind. Such reverence to the original series, nearly 40 years on, is only toxic at this point.

The best Transformers shows of the past don't have to be lightning in a bottle. The Evergreen fetish makes them so.

How can there be another contemporary Transformers show with the outdated shadow of the 80's lurching ever present over it? Beast Wars to Unicron Trilogy to Prime. They all wore their era with pride. They pay lip service to what came before, but don't get bogged down in trying to replicate it.

Its the current trend of corporations and pop culture: stick to the brand's most iconic era and style because its safe and easily marketable to the very late boomers/early Gen X to Gen Y aka people who were around in the fanbase form the '80 to the '90. That and currently a very vocal portion of the fanbase are the people back from their G1 days and the newcomers from IDW. Which are all very focused on G1.

Don't get me wrong I'm the first to love Generations as a line but I'm starting to think it might not be the best material to base off a toyline-derived show, as it will always carry the shadow of GEEWUN.

Totally stoked about this. Now I have an excuse to add Netflix to my already-maximized entertainment budget.

I’m particularly excited about how grim-n-gritty it looks, both in animation style and potential plot (war and all). I loved Prime, but get those silly flesh-creatures out of the equation

Out of curiosity, what would you like to see more/less of in the franchise? I just want to know where you're coming from.

This looks great to me, but as a G1 guy, it seems tailor made for me. I wont complain. I'm loving the figures right now and fairly excited for the show. So its working here. Hopefully the show is good. I dont really see the compaints that its just a "toyline cartoon". Since the toyline will be gone by then, but of course they are re-releasing some of the Siege figures. Looks like more of a product of the show needing toys more than the toys needing a show. Of course they go hand in hand, but as long as its good, its all good.

This looks AWESOME!

Guys, the character models, the tone. Animations are decent. This looks very promising to me. I was so dissapointed by the Machinema series. The framerate was 3 frames per second, the animation models were almost 1 colored meshes. The animation was just silly rotating joints.
I didn't like the story and what happened, half an action scene and that was the entire episode.

Haven't truly seen Cyberverse, how can I, I live in freaking Holland. I think it's even region blocked online somehow, time for VPN and the high seas, searching for booty.

This looks awesome, I don't need a full package of drama, action, humor and 0 plotholes. Give me a more mature (12+ age) Transformers series with good visuals and okay to decent storylines and characters. Then I'm good.

I also love it that they are (almost) exactly like their toy variants. And Jetfire is a Decepticon guys! Also Fembots in the trailer!

When will this launch?

Summer most likely also don't expect Jetfire to stay a con... Plus now that I think of it in both the G1 and Movie verse he started as a con anyway...

Less reliance on the past. It has been nearly four decades and there have been massively successful series that prove rigid devotion to G1 isn't needed to sell Transformers. The franchise sells itself if the writing, marketing and design are upto the challenge. Less Ratchet, Ironhide, Bumblebee etc More Bulkhead, Hot Shot, Rattrap and all the other New characters that have been successfully launched in the past few decades.

It is funny, to look at the Takara Series, they did just that back in the late 80's. Culled all the old faces away. As I've said before it is really odd that in a franchise that is 36 years old, some people are far too fixated on the first three years. Does James Bond stick to revamping the Sean Connery era? Does Doctor Who fixate on the First Doctor? Does the Gundam franchise stick to Mobile Suit Gundam? The X-Men on the Original Five? No is the answer to all those things and these series have been around a lot longer than Transformers.

TL:DR Respect the past, but don't slavishly try to emulate it forever.

Yeah it's the guy who voices Prime on Cyberverse.
It is? Oh, nice. He's definitely gotten better in this season of Cyberverse, enabling Optimus to emote better and have a more diverse emotional range now that he's been put into more non-war situations.
I don't mind him in Cyberverse but something sounds off about it here, to me. It's probably the setting.

There's a segment of the fandom that won't accept substitutes for Cullen and Welker. While I don't personally have that opinion, with the amount of potential eyeballs on this series I think it's a misstep to not cast them. Also see: they spent all their money on the animation.

Funny to think that Hot Shot is just a renamed Bumblebee  if it weren't for the fact that Hasbro lost the trademark.

Also gundam is a tricky example to use as it may not focus on the original series it does heavily rely on the original universe, the UC timeline. The last few animated works have been focused on it (Gundam The Origin, Thunderbolt Gundam, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam Hathaway Flash... I think I may be forgetting one). Now the Transformers comparison would be if Hasbro was still doing toylines or productions set in the Original Generation 1 universe. Heck if they really wanted to, Hasbro could do a Turn A Bang and insist that every alternate timeline of Transformers fiction took place in the same, massive, continuity.

Technically all the other examples I gave use the same timeline they had from the outset. The obvious distinction being James Bond, wherein the Daniel Craig era was a reboot of the series. Yet from Dr. No to Die Another Day was all, nebulously, the same character's journey.

The G1 toys are still using the aesthetic of the original series though. Designs for planes, cars, trucks and audio equipment that is laughably outdated. Even the concept designs of the post-Movie characters are concepts from three and a half decades ago. Nothing about them is new anymore.

Maybe the transformers will scan their alt modes from old earth TV and when they get finally get to earth everything is new (that still won't explain their siege earth modes :>).
If the Autobot and Decepticons have to call their HQs and its the same person running it, I'll slow clap. Genlock was okay/enjoyable (boring main mech designs to begin with) so I'm doubting this will go wrong. They can turn red vs blue from comedy to uber dark and real on a dime so it might have a beast wars feel.

Keep in mind that it's also a different animation studio. Whereas Machinima used the (legendary) Tatsunoko Production to (poorly) animate the Prime Wars Trilogy, Rooster Teeth are using Polygon Pictures to animate this trilogy.
